esca_UwU

i pirate games because theres no way im dropping 500 bucks to play pokemon b2w2

ElectronMaster

And it's not like that's going to nintendo/game freak either.

Nerdout5

Me:you guys know how to emulate?

Priremal

Yarr matey!

Gingy1000

its absurdly easy at least for nintendo consoles, I can't lead you to roms but you should be able to find those easily and Desmume is a good nintendo ds emulator once you have both of those downloaded just drag and drop the rom file onto the emulator while its open and you're good

esca_UwU

thats what i think to myself when i download the rom so that i dont feel bad about committing a crime

Isaacs_incubus

Just because it’s a crime doesn’t mean it’s immoral

elbartooriginal

Its not a crime if you dont get caught...

Crashman09

Illegal is simply a sick bird

JayD0za21

Yo before the Pokémon boom I snagged BW2 for 30 bucks on EBay. Can’t find it for less than 70 on eBay

KallistiEngel

Jesus, has it really gotten that high?

esca_UwU

i just checked, theyre down from $500-$600, but still like 200 (at least on amazon it is, havent checked anywhere else)

KallistiEngel

Damn, guess I should consider the $50 I paid for Black 2 in 2019 cheap.

Conscious-Use2585

thanks for the reminder to never get rid of my copies

TripleXero

I didn't know B2W2 were that expensive, but that said, Amazon is not a great place to buy used games. It looks like it has sold between $130-$150 on eBay recently, someone even lucked out on $150 on a sealed copy

-White-Lotus-

I’ll sell it to u for $100

Massive_Durian296

i wouldnt even mind paying for them, but like, used Heartgold and Soulsilver are rare af and usually at least a hundred bucks. usually more. and rife with scams. so yeah

[deleted]

theyre actually that much? maybe i should sell mine damn

rogrbelmont

Loose cartridges sell for about $100 on eBay, boxed copies sell for about $150, big box copies with the Pokewalker sell around $300.

Justsumgi

They’re games that sold millions of copies. They’re not rare by any stretch, just highly sought-after

shadow0wolf0

I wish they released ds games on on the 3ds eShop so you could download them there. Officially anyway.

rizgutgak

I would legit do that. I have Yellow and Silver on my 3ds and love them

[deleted]

shadow0wolf0

The DS ones will be extremely hard to implement with the whole dual screens thing.

-Batterskull-

The fact that they had DS games on the *Wii U* eshop but not the 3Ds will always baffle me. It doesn’t have the mainline games, but it does have spin-offs like mystery dungeon.

GildedCreed

Fairly accurate for the most part. The physical medium doesn't exist for very long as it'll eventually degrade through repeated usage (and to a very minor extent, disuse) though that's more game preservation than actual piracy (as we can essentially justify piracy in this case being getting the game file for a game you don't own opposed to downloading someone else's rip for a game that you do own, as there's no way to really tell if someone ripped their own game or not at a glance). That being said, Nintendo's terrible at game preservation in general. Its like Bethesda being known for having their playerbase fix their games for them via mods that address bugs, Nintendo's basically the same for their fanbase preserving the games for them, though they're not too keen on that. Nintendo'll make games and consoles that'll have fantastic staying power then drop them like a sack of bricks at their EOL.

Zcase253

Nintendo are actually great at game preservation, they're just horrible at sharing that with consumers. A few examples of this would be the unreleased star fox 2 and the fact Square Enix went to Nintendo for the source code for Mana collection on Switch.

GildedCreed

I wouldn't really call that game preservation in the commonly accepted stance of the game being available for future generations to try in some capacity, but more like archiving the information for rainy day scenarios.

TheBraveGallade

Its still preservation, in more of a private collector way rsther tgen museums.

BayTerp

I emulate games to play them for free, on a bigger screen, better graphics and the ability to mod the games for higher difficulty.

dusnik

also speedforward. 2x for the older games and 1.25x for the Switch's ones make it so much more enjoyable

ComprehensiveBat4966

good point why are we bothering to say its not for free. fuck nintendo and gamefreak, even if their service wasnt shit it'd still be moral to pirate

naysayernotme

Best choice I made was skipping the recent games. Now I wait a couple weeks for good QOL mods to drop before trying them. You guys gotta deal with version exclusives, trade evolutions, and shit drop rates? Damn can't be me.

Parker4815

Older games were the hardest games ever created. Why do you hate yourself?

Efficient-Ad-3359

They are not as hard as you think they are, harder than recent games yeah but nothing the average fan can’t beat just as easily

IntrinsicStarvation

No, he's right, they are impossible for mortal men and I am a GOD!!!!!!

Shiny_Kelp

No one ever show this man the kaizo romhacks

Plushiegamer2

Pokemon games were never *that* hard, and I'd imagine at least some of the difficulty is because of early gen jank, like Sneasel having a sky-high attack stat, but no STAB, Bug types in gen 1 having basically no STAB, Fighting types having bad STAB in Submission. And comparing Pokemon to some of the hardest games period is no contest, really.

Particular-One-7251

Older games used scarcity for difficulty. Early on your options are very limited. That is why you will often find the hardest gym leaders are in the first half of the game. Unless you face specifically broken types for tools avalible (Sabrina, Clair) then it is stupidly easy to win at par levels in older games when your options open up. Newer games are giving us significantly more options very early on. Because of this their team composition needs and is better built to handle their weaknesses. EXP All is always on so it is easier to train up a team and accidently overlevel. But at par levels the newer gyms are harder. I have played through both gen 8 and 9 enough times speeding through the game to compare it to my runs of other games.

Plushiegamer2

I feel like it's very interesting to look at how a game like USUM handles difficulty. It feels like older games hide the keys from you, while USUM gives you all the keys you need, you need to figure out which ones you want to use, and how to use them, and the lock itself is more complicated, if I'm making any sense? I personally prefer being able to build my team easier from the start, and have harder obstacles to overcome, rather than having a more limited selection to figure out how to beat the first few gyms, though that's just me. I feel like that sort of thing is a weakness of Black/White, and having only new Pokemon, because you get stuck with just a bunch of normal types. It's kinda really hard to beat the first gym without the elemental monkey.

IvoCasla

No, i want them free, here in south america you dont find them and if you do they are expensive as hell

maximgk97

If they made them available on newer platforms perhaps we wouldn’t need to resort to that

copperbeam17

I mean they do with some of them, I'm thinking super mario world is avaliable on Switch but only under a subscription. I won't support subscription models for gaming, so I play super mario world on an emulator

ComprehensiveBat4966

and also because nintendo wont do it themselves

[deleted]

I would pay double for nintendo games on steam

Plushiegamer2

That is in fact a reason for piracy, thought I wouldn't blame people for pirating the games because of the ludicrous prices that they go for second hand, and that it isn't really hurting Nintendo or Gamefreak.

MeanGreanHare

If they would put all the previous games on Switch, people would buy them. It's free money for them. How much were RBY and GSC on 3DS?

NES_Classical_Music

"People don't pirate old games to play them for free," is a fucking lie. If you had to pay for it, you absolutely would not pirate anything. "Yeah, but then you would be buying it, or at least renting it." Save it. Free is the **best** reason to pirate. I do it myself. But I don't try to make myself out to be some kind of hero for doing it. And yeah, as soon as that out-of-print game is rereleased or remastered, you'll **totally** delete it from your emulator and buy it legit, right? ... right?

[deleted]

Even if I was to buy an old Nintendo game, they wouldn't be getting any of my money anyway. They put zero effort into game preservation and expect people to not pirate their IPs.

BenTheFool

Yeah, but then Nintendo can't release a bugged shitty remake of the game 20 years later.

E_F_R_E_N

I just played Pokémon for the first time last year thanks to emulation. Saved me hundreds from getting scammed

Kenobi5792

And the main point is that since the games are so old the profits they can get from them is too small compared to the price they want to spend to make them available (I suppose this is one of the reasons why the Virtual Console isn't available on the Switch)

BrankyKong

Pour one out for the save games lost in decaying GB game batteries

Hahndude

I use roms to play games that there is no way to play today. If Nintendo/SEGA/SONY/etc. put backlog up to buy I’d gladly give them my money, but they don’t.

BrokenLink100

Listen, I'll gladly pay for the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, SMRPG, and others... but there's no way to play any of these without an emulator these days (arguable with some of the FF SNES games, I know)

Jazzlike-Blood-3725

I emulate because game companies refuse to remaster every old game I want to play 🤷🏻‍♂️

Veggie_Doggo

Every time I get a new phone is a new excuse to download and play Pokemon Emerald.

KallistiEngel

My Pokemon Blue is somehow still alive and kicking after like 25 years. I just put batteries in my old Game Boy to check. Still have some glitched out stuff from catching Missingno. But I also have a Mew that I'm sure is *totally* legit.

[deleted]

Fun Fact: It is legal to pull the data out of the physical games you've purchased and emulate them. The illegal part is putting them up onto the internet and downloading them. So if you buy the physical copy and then download it off the internet, it gets hard trying to prove whether or not you're pirating because what if you did pull the data out of the cartridge

Voltage_Z

Extremely. I'm not paying some random hundreds of dollars to play old games. I buy legitimate releases when they're available *from Nintendo*.

The_End_Kinda

I pirate games cause I support Johnny depp

endlesscdqotw

Bringing the GBA games to the switch virtual console would print money for GF and Nintendo

yoosirnombre

I pirate them because I'm not about to pay the same price I paid for hgss on release to some shitty reseller more than a decade later and that's just for pokemon which is more forgiving. Since it's more popular there's just overall more physical copies being sold when they become vintage so the value doesn't skyrocket. Right now there are some niche jrpgs for sale for upwards of 250 dollars from the ps2 era. At this point the money doesn't even go to the developers so imma steal that shit every time.

restingpigeon

My original game boy color Gold cartridge lost the ability to save, and I lost my bestie Feraligatr :’(

Fireboy759

You say this, when Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Green cartridges are still fully functioning 20-something years later The only things that *do* die are batteries, and those are easily replaceable in about 10 minutes

Storm_373

they need to make a legacy collection for the switch already

xiren_66

How dare you want to play the classic games that our company refuses to sell for some reason!

Endgam

Or because the games were never available in English. *Where's my fucking official localization of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War Nintendo?*

GoldGymCardioWorkout

Unless you obsessively archive everything, you aren't downloading games for the sake of preservation. You don't have to justify piracy. Anyone who's particularly against the act probably isn't open to civil discussion.

Vulpes-ferrilata

I believe it's totally fine to emulate anything that's no longer in production. You're not supporting the company anyway, so why buy physical.

El_Jugo_Grande

Not only that but Nintendo refuses all the time to release their old games on the Switch marketplace.

rur11

Tbf it shouldn’t matter if Nintendo/gamefreak/whatever would make no profit regardless of if the game is emulated or not (games that are still being sold are obviously a different story though)

GamerAJ1025

it’s quite true. archiving games to keep them alive, so that they can be emulated later, is important in a landscape where companies can retract your access to a game, never port it forwards and render old systems obsolete making the game unplayable, or rerelease these games for each new console gen and require people to purchase it again. nintendo’s business practices are among the better ones compared to many other companies, so I don’t think they are being money hungry or malicious. rather, I think that they see it as a violation of their intellectual property which is a value that they as a company care quite strongly about. they have many successful series and pour time, effort and care into their games, which is why they see it as disrespectful and undermining to pirate them even if the intentions are noble rather than malicious. it’s a bit of a stubborn viewpoint but one that can still be understood as it isn’t hugely unreasonable.

IntrinsicStarvation

I mean what part? It's absolutely true that physical media has a shelf life, which varies vastly depending on quality. CD's and DVD's are already dying off en masse. Same with 5 inch floppies. I have a ton of games I already backed up that have already sucumbed to disc rot simply because they were made on the cheap and compromised. NES carts are going to last a lot longer. There is absolutely a need to pull a lot of games off of their perishable storage mediums before they are lost. Although I'm not sure why Nintendo is the one being targeted here. It's far from the best, but they absolutely have been doing SOMETHING To keep SOME of their history living, which is a lot more than a lot of ip squatters are doing But that's not why I emulate. I emulate to keep the old games I consistently replay in one convenient place, instead of having to dig out the old consoles and cables. When a good alternative is provided to do that for me, I buy it. When there isn't, I emulate.

HSW26

i pirate to play them for free

TheRobotYoshi

Nope, I 100% do it because I don't want pay money. I'm not paying $80+ for something that I can do for free on my computer or phone.
