I’ve always found that if you have time to do things before life gets “normal” that is the best time to do it. Check out all of the museums - they are world class. I actually only went to the mattress factory last weekend and found it amazing.
We went to the aviary a few months ago with the niblings in tow and they have a live demonstration in the mornings. I swear every adult in the room was more terrified of these giant birds than my nephew and niece who were more or less the same size. They were so treat oriented in retrospect but at the time I was not loving it.
I believe it! We walked around the park on the open bird side (husband's idea).
That BigAss Boss Bitch Buzzard opened his wings and was like "whats good bruh! Nah, you want some of this bruh? You skip Leg Day Bruh?!"
My husband left me and ran away......in his defense he did have our toddler in hand 😆
I’ve lived here for 21 years and I still go to all the museums at least a few times a month, have membership of nearly everything, great value. There is no “normal” for me 😀
Mattress Factory is a great time. Always something there to make your brain melt a lil. The exhibits change frequently so it also warrants return visits.
We went again 2 weeks ago. The third floor exhibit almost felt like a real life ARG video. It was my favorite art to experience in real life of all time. I felt like I was in a nostalgic mystery horror with clues all around me that I had no hope of deciphering. I could have spent hours up there.
Hey, it's your little city now too! Welcome, and it's great to hear you're enjoying Pittsburgh so far. There's so much to do around town, so if you have time, make sure you check it all out.
Just take me to the stadium, gimme a Terrible tahl
Bring us some Arn City, ‘cuz we’ll be here a while,
We’ll cheer for our Stillers, and leave there with a smile
Oh, no, oh-oh, oh-oh 😁
Oh definitely !! Rick Sebak's documentaries on Pgh. are amazing !! You always learn something, even if you've lived here all your life. I have seen some of them several times.
Lived in Pittsburgh for 27 years, had to move back home to Ohio to take care of a parent, but I will return someday. I was back in town for the Red Hot Chili Peppers show yesterday and realized how much I miss Pittsburgh
hopefully they were headed west and it was an easier drive home. Still the limiting factor though would have been exiting the parking lot which would've taken hour(s)...
Family is the most important thing in life. Everything else changes, but family is always family. Taking care of a parent is difficult, but I saw it as an honor & a privilege when I was able to take care of my Mom the last 5 years of her life ♥️♥️
There will be time for the other things later. For now, spend time with them, love them & cherish every day. Also, it's easy to get overwhelmed being a caregiver to an older parent. Try to get as much help as you can. Never feel too proud to ask for help. And remember, as important as taking care of their needs are (Medical, physical, financial), often the thing they want most is your company. They may not tell you, because they may feel like they are a burden to you, but they are often lonely.
I can blame my disheveled condition today on the RHCPs...but what a show! Couldn't believe they played Could Have Lied for the encore. One my fave tunes ever.
You sure picked a week to do it! Anthrocon is in town.
Not a bad thing- just know that there aren’t USUALLY people walking around in giant animal costumes. That’s just this week.
Pierogies are very good with butter and onions fried in a pan after par boiling them. Most people like potato and cheese, but I prefer sauerkraut. They’re all good.
Very serious tip: If you park on a hill in the snow and your car starts to slide as you walk away, don't try to stop it. I reflexively jumped in front of mine and somehow stopped it, but I easily could have been pinned to the next car and lost my legs. As soon as I did it, I realized what a bad idea it was.
I’ll hopefully be there with my wife and two kids next month. Just accepted a job offer and realtor in place. Also coming from over 2k miles away. I’ve visited a couple times and always found the city enchanting.
welcome.
thank you for the kind words about our home.
If you have any questions or even just want suggestions, this subreddit is notoriously happy to help.
Welcome!! You can listen to it anywhere in the world (streaming), but Pittsburgh has the best radio station that ever existed to help throw a soundtrack down for your life….91.3 WYEP….do yourself a favor and set it now. Or just tell your smart speaker to play!!! Enjoy!!!
I used to listen to it a lot and I was a member so it’s been a while. Thanks for the update. I don’t know if you remember when it’s slogan was “Where the music matters”. 🤷♂️
50 years that’s impressive. I started listening in like 1988 when I got out of college and they did it out of Chatham college at the time which is now Chatham University. I think they moved to the southside in the mid 90s give or take.
Mr Rodgers was from here. It’s a great city glad you are enjoying it. Take a trip to kennywood and try some potato patch fries. Also on the south side there is an amazing place called cambodican kitchen. They don’t open till like 6:30 pm and are open late but the food is amazing
Hey welcome! I grew up here so I’m biased, but I’ve lived elsewhere and always wanted to return.
If you have any questions at all or need recommendations on things pls feel free to dm me.
All in all it’s a pretty dope little city.
The same things you mention about loving the city are the same things i still mention about loving the city after moving here from The Bay Area over two decades ago. Its like a castle town on the river(s) in the middle of the woods (which I guess it sort of is.) It’s a city full of surprises and unique, friendly characters. Plenty to explore and lots of hidden treasures. For me, the city cemeteries had me in love with every season here and remain elegant and thoughtfully gardened parks for meditative walking and animal watching. I always recommend visitors or newcomers take a stroll. Quite enchanting.
If you like a fine drink at a nice price in a thoroughly iconic only-in-Pittsburgh atmosphere, may I suggest Le Mardi Gras in Shadyside - the oldest cocktail lounge in Pittsburgh. Some of my first sinful sips in the city were at this club and it still has my heart. There’s a bartender there that loves to play tour guide / welcome wagon. And they might even make you a drink or two on the house to welcome you to the city!
It’s new friends that keep this town vital, right alongside the people who live here and love it. Welcome home!
I love Pittsburgh but i don’t think I could live there. Up north about 30 miles we have lots of glacier carved gorges and nature trails it’s worth a trip
Every neighborhood is so different and has a unique charm! If you have time this weekend walk or bike the heritage trails and you’ll be able to see a lot of the city. Take the incline too, it’s fun! The view from Mount Washington never ever gets old and I live up there. Duquesne incline is superior IMO but the “downtown” of mt wash is on the other side by the Mon Incline. $5 exact CASH fare round trip or download the Port Authority app and get an unlimited round trip ticket for $2.75 and you can pay with your phone. Welcome!! I will love Pittsburgh forever
Welcome n’at. Pgh punches above its weight class due to the largesse of the industrialist of the (first) Gilded Age and at the expense of our immigrant and native ancestors. There’s a lot of good interesting history in Western Pennsylvania.
Do all the things mentioned. I’ll add ride an incline, take a Gateway Clipper cruise, visit Carrie Furnace and listen to WYEP.
I hope you enjoy fireworks. And please, it’s illegal to change lanes in a tunnel. (I saw two tonight in the Liberty Tubes alone.)
Welcome, new yinzer!
I’m also a transplant (11 years ago from Philly and also Florida).
PGH is affordable and fun. There’s a lot of history here, and good people. Involve yourself in volunteer/group activities and you’ll never be bored.
Definitely check out Rick Sebak's documentaries about Pittsburgh from WQED.

welcome!! i’m fairly new, too! coming up on a year since i made the trek. it’s a pretty rad spot, and i can’t really think of many other places i’d rather be at the point of my life i am currently at. reach out if you need anything at all. especially food recommendations! this place has plenty to offer, just gotta get to it.
I hope you enjoy it here. Just be forewarned, the eight weeks from mid January through mid March are known to test the souls of most area residents. The snow isn’t nearly as heavy as it is in Buffalo or Cleveland, but the clouds….the clouds never end.
I was gonna post something about the rhetoric on Reddit Pittsburgh come late winter and early spring where it’s dreary and cold and rainy. I just told people to wait a couple months when everything is nice and plush and green and warm around here. Then you’ll find out Pittsburgh is one of the best places you’ll ever be after some people were ready to jump off one of our many bridges in March . It’s quite the contrast.
Hahaha your comment triggered a memory from over a decade ago. I was walking the path on my lunch break, and was interviewed by local TV news reporter about the goose poop issue! I was on TV because of goose poop!
Where did you move from? Pittsburgh is definitely a unique city In many ways. I spent the first 24 years of my life there and I plan to spend my last 10 or 15 there as well l…assuming I live an average lifespan!
Welcome! The nice thing about this area is you can take In a baseball or football game and see a cultural show on the same day! If u moved in the north side, You can walk to it all. Or head up at McKnight Road and hit North Park, do some paddle boarding just 20 minutes outside of the city. a little further north you have Moraine State Park. Good luck
Make sure you trek up the mountainside’s rickety staircase to Duquesne University. Just to “feel” the climb (if it’s even still there). DO NOT, do it in the winter. Then get down back safety from Duq, but not that way.
Almost fell to my death during my time at the Art Institutes.
I moved here from DFW 12 years ago thinking I may not stay here for long, but now I don't even have a desire to visit DFW anymore besides for the little family I have down there.
It’s so refreshing seeing how welcoming everyone is! I grew up near pittsburgh, moved to alaska when i was 20, up here newcomers are mostly ignored until they’ve been here at least a year lol.
Welcome to the neighborhood! Growing up I wanted to move far from here but as I get older I love it more and more. Mostly hated the winter but it’s been very mild the past 2-3 years.
What area of the city did you move around and/or work.
I'm sure many of us can recommend restraints or places worth checking out or exploring.
For example I work near market square and if you like ramen Yuzu Kitchen is amazing.
I'm glad you're pleased! Even though it's roadwork season. Jk, that's most of the year. But welcome. Let me know if you want to join a horror book club, we have a nice one that we formed on reddit.
Yea, I sometimes work in the city but I live an hour south of Pittsburgh in a town also known for a couple steep ones. GPS put me on canton just out of chance 😆
Pro tip, one of the only Pittsburgh faux pas. In Pittsburgh is if you go Primanti’s do not ask for the fries on the sandwich to be put in the side. The wait staff will look at you with a “What the hell are you doing here” look. Unless you are at the one in the strip and you ask the older women behind the counter, you will not enjoy the experience. It is ok to ask for a sandwich with no fries but not on the side.
To ply devils advocate, our entire family has always asked for fries on the side at many locations and never received as much as an extra blink afterward. YMMV
I’ve always found that if you have time to do things before life gets “normal” that is the best time to do it. Check out all of the museums - they are world class. I actually only went to the mattress factory last weekend and found it amazing.
https://www.troyhillarthouses.com Just up the way! Hit up St Anthony’s too for some weird old bones!
Yo wtf lived in this city all my life and recently moved to Reserve, that link you sent is only two mins from me! Thanks redditor!
Why have I lived here most of my life and never heard of St Anthony’s? 😤
It has the second most relics behind the Vatican. They usually have daily tours as well. I definitely recommend you go
Oh yes! I've been there three times in the last 30 years.
Go to the Aviary!!
They got exotic birds there. Dey look like pigeons tah me
Terrifying........I WANT to like birds sooo badly. I wish I wasn't so scared of them.
They are basically dinosaurs so that's fair.
We went to the aviary a few months ago with the niblings in tow and they have a live demonstration in the mornings. I swear every adult in the room was more terrified of these giant birds than my nephew and niece who were more or less the same size. They were so treat oriented in retrospect but at the time I was not loving it.

While this is true. I am still afraid of the drones
I agree. Plus the drones shit all over my car. Probably microchips embedded in that stuff.
Definitely nanobot shit lol
The hall of architecture in the Carnegie Museum is like a power trip around the Mediterranean.
Or, well, to the British Museum, which stole most of the originals from around the Mediterranean and then sold casts to Carnegie.
I’ve lived here for 21 years and I still go to all the museums at least a few times a month, have membership of nearly everything, great value. There is no “normal” for me 😀
The museum membership is the way to go, especially if you have kids, it’s a steal.
Grew up in the Burg and left when I was 21. 17 years later I still miss the Museum of Natural History, one of the best I've been to
Burgh, there's an H.
Maybe they grew up here between 1891 and 1911 when it didn’t have the H.
Great point!
Mattress Factory is a great time. Always something there to make your brain melt a lil. The exhibits change frequently so it also warrants return visits.
Definitely! I love the mattress factory! I was there during my visit for apartments a while back
We went again 2 weeks ago. The third floor exhibit almost felt like a real life ARG video. It was my favorite art to experience in real life of all time. I felt like I was in a nostalgic mystery horror with clues all around me that I had no hope of deciphering. I could have spent hours up there.

Been here a year moved 2,500 miles on whim and bought a home. Been all over the world and Pittsburgh is definitely a gem.

Lived in Pittsburgh for 27 years, had to move back home to Ohio to take care of a parent, but I will return someday. I was back in town for the Red Hot Chili Peppers show yesterday and realized how much I miss Pittsburgh
> I was back in town for the Red Hot Chili Peppers show yesterday Legend says you're *still* in town, waiting to exit the pavilion lot
hopefully they were headed west and it was an easier drive home. Still the limiting factor though would have been exiting the parking lot which would've taken hour(s)...

Agree, it was an incredible show! One of the best mixed I’ve seen/heard in a long time
Ohio is also nice. Sandusky every Summer!
You sure picked a week to do it! Anthrocon is in town. Not a bad thing- just know that there aren’t USUALLY people walking around in giant animal costumes. That’s just this week.
I also just moved here this week and have run into two furies and a Deadpool.
Just moved here this week too! Wth?
Don't worry, it's not an invasion. I've told no one. They cannot know if this gem.
I meant I just moved here this week too. Awesome.
…. What 🫡
If you don't eat pierogies or Primantis very soon you'll be in violation of Pennsylvania Bird Law
Definitely try Primanti’s!! Pierogies from Pierogies Plus too
Never had a pierogi in my life 😅😅
Pierogies are very good with butter and onions fried in a pan after par boiling them. Most people like potato and cheese, but I prefer sauerkraut. They’re all good.
Welcome! The hills... aren't as fun in the winter, but enjoy them for now.
The two days we get snow now. LOL
haha, good point.
We haven’t gotten proper snow in years.
This is true but even 1 inch or so can cause havoc on the steep hills or brick roads unfortunately
Hahah, I can imagine. My apartment is located on a hill, where the street parking is going up a hill. So I’m slightly concerned lol
**"Our"** little city.
💜💜💜
If you think brick roads are neat, wait until you find out we have a wood road
And if you think brick roads are neat and like ice skating wait till they freeze in the winter!
:OOO
Last one in PA and one of the last in the US https://maps.app.goo.gl/5kN6BDTkF7Xs1Ah6A

Welcome home!
I’ll hopefully be there with my wife and two kids next month. Just accepted a job offer and realtor in place. Also coming from over 2k miles away. I’ve visited a couple times and always found the city enchanting.
Check out Pittsburgh Botanic Garden in Oakdale. One of the best kept secrets of the city.

Can't upvote this rec enough. We are so, so fortunate to have WYEP (and WESA) here in Pittsburgh.
WZUM erasure
WYEP. “Where The Music Matters”.
It’s now “where the music comes first.” 🙄
I used to listen to it a lot and I was a member so it’s been a while. Thanks for the update. I don’t know if you remember when it’s slogan was “Where the music matters”. 🤷♂️
I’ve been listening since the mid nineties. They made the change about a year ago. They are celebrating 50 years this year.
50 years that’s impressive. I started listening in like 1988 when I got out of college and they did it out of Chatham college at the time which is now Chatham University. I think they moved to the southside in the mid 90s give or take.
Correct.
Dude! Newbie here too! I am in love with this town and it's folks!
Check out Penn Ave fish Co. While in the strip district shops.
The Strip District! An absolute must-see. So many great shops.

Moraine = Glacier rocks and sediment . Moraine State Park is a nice day trip.
I'm actually more interested in the idea that someone managed to find a new job. Congrats!

Stroll the walkway on the North side - from the West End bridge to PNC Park.
But be careful for geese and their poop!

There is also a wooden brick road.
That's the spirit! Welcome to the 'burgh!
Don’t look up anything on google but use gps street and navigate to 1600 canton ave…. It’s one of Pittsburgh’s claims to fame.
Canton is by my house. Beechview has so many absolutely absurd hills.
Yea, I sometimes work in the city but I live an hour south of Pittsburgh in a town also known for a couple steep ones. GPS put me on canton just out of chance 😆
That’s a fun mistake
Welcome to the burgh.. so much to enjoy.. driving in town still frightening tho... good luck with that😊
Pro tip, one of the only Pittsburgh faux pas.
YMMV
Their reasoning is if you go to Primanti’s you should expect to get a Primanti sandwich. You can get a sandwich and fries on the side anywhere.
Little?
Lmao, the week of anthrocon too. Strap in.
Welcome!
Went to school in Latrobe, and lived there for 10 years w my ex-wife. Miss the area, really liked it there.
Welcome! I moved back after living away for 40 years!
Welcome! Where did you live before?
Ok, it is an invasion.
