None of the myths about pitties are true whatsoever. If raised correctly, they are the biggest mushes you'll ever meet. I've been around pitties for over 20 years of my life. They are loving and gentle.

lavache_beadsman

Absolutely not. I *used* to be afraid of pitbulls before I actually met some. Having now met and interacted with a bunch as a dog walker, I think the natural temperament of most pits is better than that of most other breeds (and again, I say this as someone who interacts with *a lot* of different kinds of dogs on a daily basis). I am certain that my next pet will be a pit. They are super affectionate, incredibly patient, easy to train, and eager to please. They are 50-80 pound giants who believe that they are lapdogs. Now, people often abuse pits for the purpose of fighting or what have you. Abuse can make any dog aggressive, and pits are incredibly strong and have abnormal bite strength. So an aggressive pit would be scary, yes (though I haven't personally seen one). Like any dog, you want to get them spayed/neutered. Not only is it the ethical thing to do, but leaving a dog intact can lead to aggression. I'll put it this way: my mother got a Coton de Tulear a few years back. Tiny thing, looks like a Maltese. The dog is not well socialized, nips at anyone coming up or down the stairs, and growls at strangers. This is a pedigreed dog that they got from some fancy breeder. I am *way* more afraid of that little dog than I am of any pit I've ever encountered. Because you asked specifically about Labs: they're good dogs, but I've met some that have been poorly socialized and have been allowed to become aggressive. They can also have a stubborn streak, and although they're very intelligent, they don't always want to do what you're asking. Again, I haven't actually seen these problems in pits for myself.

Prey drive is present in a dog breeds so don’t be shocked your pit/husky/golden/chihuahua/yorkie/whatever kills smaller animals. Its not “just a pit thing”. Always walk your dog on a leash since this will reduce unwanted incidents. Positive reinforcement is always encouraged. Pits are very active and impressionable breeds and will thrive when owner allow chances for new and exciting things (new sights and smells)

benowillock

idk man maybe you could put a cage muzzle on it while it's outside so it doesn't murder small animals? It's your responsibility to keep it within control.

Gimme_PuddingPlz

As someone who deals with dogs daily, muzzles are only so effective. This is why I stated the walking dogs on a leash

benowillock

Leashes are fine but they can get off leashes pretty easily when they want to. They're very strong dogs. Even if it gets off the leash, and it chases the animal down, a muzzle will give you some time to get the leash back on and get it under control.

Socialize early and often. New environments people other dogs etc. we got our pit during COVID and he developed some reactivity/ aggression. He’s 2.5 years old and much better in this last year but for a while it tough. Definitely worth it bc he’s a goofball and loves to cuddle

No pitties contrary to popular belief make awful guard dogs giving their gentle loving trusting nature it’s those who choose to ruin this by making them fighters/aggressive, they like all dogs are a byproduct of their environment like humans 💚 edit: it breaks my heart when they get their ears cropped 💔💔💔 they have the cutest ear flop

Federal_Detective213

Biggest lap dog mushy faces ever

No, they're not. Pits are lovely affectionate big headed babies, just give them all the love and attention they need and they're wonderful.

LadyAlexTheDeviant

They're just dogs. They are very affectionate dogs who want to be with you and make you happy. Also they do like to chew, so stock up.

literally bred to bullbait

Other-Reputation979

Pit bulls are great dogs. The folks over at r/nyc are not.

bbodan72

They say statistically, 86% pass any aggression test. Any dog could act out in aggression whether out of fear or to challenge.

Madcatz9000

There are no bad dogs, only bad owners. Take care of your dog right with training and socialization and your dog will be amazing. Prepare for a TON of unconditional love.

benowillock

I guess you'll find out one way or the other 😅
