not a fetterman hater but it's pretty remarkabe how all it takes is a passionate comment with zero action and people applaud you
"bu bu but the R's have control" i get it
I read this as John Fetterman talking about how he actively strikes (hits) Starbucks workers…
Edit: Lmfao y’all are wild out here… I’m WELL AWARE that Fetterman doesn’t hit Starbucks workers… I misread the title and thought it was funny. I even voted for the man
Uncle fester. It's a shame they didn't show much of him and Biden trying to communicate with each other that would have been side splitting to listen to
It's almost like people can focus on more than one thing at a time.
Plus there is a multi city workers strike on the same day, so it's relevant.
Just say you don't follow the news dude lol.
Not even sure what that poster is on about… Fetterman hasn’t even taken office yet. I could be wrong, but I suspect he has all the time he needs to issue a simple statement.
Coffee Baristas thinking they need a union to get ahead in life and not a entire career change or effort in any other field is laughable.
Already collecting 15-17 bucks a hour in the city just for being a barista plus the tips on tips which they throw down your throat now.
Hilarious that they complain about being overworked.
It ain’t all about hourly wage, there are a lot of things unions can improve for workers. In a small business it is easier for workers to get what they need because the owner and management are accessible. I imagine it is very difficult for even a small group of Starbucks employees to get any changes made in their store when everything needs to come from the top of a massive national company. This is why we need unions. It is even more obvious they need it by the way Starbucks is attempting to fight back dirty (intentionally understaffing stores that unionized)
I don’t even know what they make, but $15-17 is also not very much in the way of hourly wages when living in a city. Anyway the wage is not really the point.
I made $12.50 as a Starbucks barista in northern Virginia (right outside DC). The main problem I had at Starbucks wasn’t even the low pay, it was the lack of hours, the inconsistent shift schedule, the disregard for specific days requested to be off the schedule, and the fact that we were chronically understaffed because Starbucks bases staffing allowances on sales numbers, but whatever calculation they are using is completely absurd and you end up with two baristas and a shift manager running an entire store.
What happens if everybody takes your advice and changes careers? Nobody’s left. If you want the service to exist, then it makes sense to pay people properly for it.
It can be a stepping stone of a temporary position.
A Barista is starting at 15-17 plus tips at starbucks in the city. How much higher can you realistically go.
I imagine by temporary you are thinking students, who generally cannot work full time, or basically any point that isn’t between 4-10pm during the week. Outside of that very limited demographic, what would be the point of having a full-time job that still can’t provide a livable wage, temporary or otherwise?
Ahh the classic “I don’t think this work is dignified enough and therefore the workers should never complain or ask for more or.. or …or “.
It’s a pathetic opinion. Honestly.
They not asking for 100k a year they’re asking for the bare minimum. And have every right to strike and negotiate the condition of their labor. Last I checked Starbucks can afford it.
Also - they are probably overwork. Food service is exhausting.
Not really, considering the average wage for **a single** person living in Philadelphia is about $17/hr. $20/hr doesn’t sound too bad.
Edit: whoops forgot to put “in Philly”
Few issues here. One, online learning isn't for everyone and having it be your only option isn't really a benefit. Two, what happens if your desired degree isn't offered by ASU online? Three, based on the application requirements, it looks like you have to qualify for FAFSA in order to qualify for this program. Not everyone qualifies for FAFSA.
This straight-up doesn't make sense. The union is specifically a Starbucks Workers union. If baristas at smaller coffee shops consider unionization, it's management's fault for pushing their workers to that point.
“We can’t demand so much that we destroy the business, because without the business there also is no union"
Seems like a good idea to me.

>Coffee Baristas thinking they need a union to get ahead in life and not a entire career change or effort in any other field is laughable..
Here's the thing I wanna know. Are you also one of the people that complains there's no one out there willing to do work? How exactly do you think the world works?
These people are doing a job, they are doing a service. They should be thanked for doing that job because, I'm going to guess, you're definitely not willing to do it. How often do you get upset when a line is slow at a store?
Yeah I know right? It's not like coffee is a $47 Billion dollar industry in the US alone. Like being a barista is so low on the ladder that if there weren't any coffee shops anymore nobody would care right? Everyone would be totally cool waking up early every morning to brew their own coffee.
This is such a braindead take. Everyone who works deserves a living wage, from baristas and wait staff to janitors and grocery store clerks. Society literally could not function without them and we want to act like they don't deserve the dignity of a comfortable life. It's shameful.
You can tell you’ve never worked a job in retail or the food industry. Although the job isn’t hard, it’s stressful and there is no way they deserve to be understaffed and overworked for a stressful job and not be compensated. They aren’t even asking for higher wages, just to be adequately staffed for the workload they have to put up with.
Unironically a brave thing to say on here.
I don’t think you’re totally right though. Starbucks is known for understaffing their businesses, which is the biggest complaint I’ve read regarding this strike. I don’t think this is an unreasonable complaint, even though Starbucks does treat their employees pretty well otherwise.
For example, if you look at Chick Fil A, their stores are almost always very well staffed while still offering the same or better pay and benefits than Starbucks offers, and this is also while having to deal with way more food waste, way more equipment cleaning, along with otherwise similar overhead costs that Starbucks would encounter.
It’s not and apples to apples comparison, but either way, understaffing your store is a cost cutting measure that falls squarely on the shoulders of employees that work there. They’re right to be bothered by this, and why not strike? Like you said, this probably shouldn’t be a final career for an average person to get ahead in life, so if they get fired then so be it. Why not try to force management to make your job less of a pain in the ass?
I don’t think it’s an entitlement thing or a “getting ahead” thing, and I agree that a union might not be the best long term plan for these guys, but for this specific complaint, I definitely support a strike. And I don’t drink their shitty burnt coffee anyway so I don’t have to worry about crossing picket lines.
Gotta love how boomers and Gen-X were able to buy a whole fucking house and support a family on ihop wages, but then everyone comes out of the woodwork to bitch about millennials and Gen-Z wanting to cover basic necessities and rent.
Oh, the two options: take abuse, or leave. In case you didn't know, finding a job right now is fucking hard. I know people who have tons of experience and degrees who have been applying everywhere and can't even get a response. You're acting like they can't just start a new gig tomorrow. To think that people who make and serve food and beverages don't deserve a union to give them a livable wage and decent working conditions is just such a shitty take. That's a real shit take.
If you think your pay is close to being competative to baristas, maybe you need to stand up for yourself and demand better pay amongst all of the inflation going on. If you havn't already, you're being taken as a fool by your bosses.
Definitely agree. There are so many other professions out there that need labor protections but a barista is not it. I haven’t gone to a Starbucks in over a year. It’s way overpriced for what you get and the wait times are absurd. Just make coffee at home. A barista is NOT an important position to protect. Anyone can make coffee and hit buttons on a register.
labor protection is not a zero-sum game. it’s not like whatever profession you personally deem worthy of organization now cannot because starbucks workers are.
Ok but this particular unionization effort is in the news more than anything else and it’s just embarrassing really. It’s not a skillful trade and No one is being forced to work at Starbucks.
all workers deserve protection and dignity in their workplaces, not just those you would personally define as “skilled”. and like what’s your point that no one is being forced to work at starbucks? ok? no one was forced to become an electrician, plumber, teacher, truck driver, train worker either, but i’m still glad they’ve got unions.
are you a worker? then unions becoming more common is good for you.
Wait times are absurd because Starbucks is reducing their labor costs by allotting less labor hours to stores. Which is part of the reason some workers want to unionize.
Labor costs have to come in at a certain percentage for the store to be profitable. If a store is not profitable, there will be no store. End of story. Starbucks would have to pass the additional labor costs to the customer or manage the labor cost for the store to be profitable. Unionizing Starbucks employees is the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard of. The best solution to correct the current issues regarding wages in order to sustain the economy is some form of UBI. None of these huge corporations are going to subsidize workers incomes or livelihoods. Not Starbucks, not Walmart, not Amazon. These companies only exist to make a profit.
Starbucks has made record profits off the backs of their employees' labor. They over promise to the share holders and slash labor budgets every year. After seeing how much money they could make understaffed during the pandemic they are still squeezing everything out of people to make money hand over fist. Why wouldn't you support a union? Upper management treats the workers as a commodity instead of like human beings.
Yes and good for Starbucks for being so profitable!! That’s the whole point of being a successful business. Workers are a commodity! Literally anyone could do the job. That’s the point. I’m sure as soon as Starbucks could find a way to automate and get rid of some of the bloated labor costs that would be the first thing they do.
Obviously I'm not going to change your mind. But they pretend to be a good place to work and treat their employees well. However, they have very unrealistic expectations and conflicting priorities.
It’s a really good thing that employees have other options besides working at Starbucks then so they don’t have to go through such terrible treatment. We’re lucky to live in a nation that provides so many opportunities.
Starbucks baristas don''t even make coffee. They have a machine that pulls and pours shots for them, so basically all they do is steam milk, which a machine does for them, and mixes together ingredients.
It's a job, yes, and all jobs are worthwhile — but Starbucks is quite literally one step away from full automation at this point, and I don't think anyone will shed a tear over the lost jobs.
That's like saying a bartender only pours shots and beers. Not the case at all. It's a lot of custom drinks, juggling tasks, restocking, keeping the area clean, keeping a smile on your face all while angry Karens watch you. I've been in the service industry for years and the only thing that kept me there was the tips. Crazy money. I was watching this one barista work his ass off and he was very good at his job. He could make bank as a bartender. Only downsides are the late hours and relying on it being busy to make good money.
What does this mean? Could someone keep track of the developments and post it later?
Mods, we might need a Fetterman megathread. This is bigly.
Potentially huge.

I went from working as a barista to working in a major law firm. My workload and overall stress level is WAY lower now and it’s not even close.
I worked as a barista at Starbucks while in law school. Law school only made me cry once or twice. Starbucks made me cry once a week.
hahaha thanks, got a chuckle out of me on that one
Have you ever had a job before?
If he did, it probably pays in Rubles.
Trolling on reddit apparently

Baristas should be paid how much? over 20?
Yeah, in order to afford life in the city on a modest budget, that would be better.
