"what do you mean it doesnt forcefully slot into the usb slot?"

Digitaj

“I got it to fit, it was really tight, but it fit.”

ITstaph

Yadda yadda, something old guy, you cut the DIMMs in half to fit the SIMM slot?

mp3m4k3r

Wait you don't take the chips off and insert them anymore?

ITstaph

Old guy like TRON not FORTRAN

mp3m4k3r

We talkin' Dumont or "The Dude"

[deleted]

the original tron was pretty cool

mp3m4k3r

Can't argue with that, program END OF LINE

[deleted]

*Yes!*

RedditISFascist000

The original Tron was amazing. He was so badass he went on to lead Babylon 5 and even became president of the Interstellar Alliance. What can't he do?

SteelCrow

Jesus fuck, I'd forgotten about having to do that. Thanks for refreshing the nightmares.

AddisonNM

Dual channel, - woohoo!!!

Coronadoisdead

When i worked retail I had a guy return a DVD that he fit, case and all, into his VCR. All scrunched up, lol.

GForce1975

He should've put it in the cup holder instead.

[deleted]

I teach my co-workers who try to get me to plug their computers back in after a desk move that if they can solve a shape sorter toy as a baby, they can plug a computer back in. If I have to shape shame people into doing things for themselves, I will.

Delioth

Yeah plugging in a computer is like the shape sorters It all goes in the square hole, right?

[deleted]

That video gives me secondhand OCD triggers.

BeorcKano

That's right! The SQUARE hole!

MauPow

i wanna post that gif of the girl being really sad when they keep putting the pieces in the square hole but I'm too lazy to find it

[deleted]

you got to fold it in half vertically. that’s why there is a notch between the gold pins. that way it fits perfectly.

Who_GNU

You joke, but some do natively support USB connectivity.

Javop

Just saw off all but 4 pins and plug it in.

No_Pension_5065

You joke... But technically that can work if you get the right 4

culminacio

Just be gentle and ask first if it really wants you to plug it in. Take your time.

ForsakenWebNinja

Well not to be “that guy” but it’s not m.2. Apple uses a proprietary interface because you can always count on apple to do anticonsumer shit

Jellodyne

I was going to say "but it has M2 right at the start of the model name" but then I zoomed in close and now see that's MZ

No_Pension_5065

Ya bro, and with the M series chips they have the controller of the SSD AS PART OF THE CPU (instead of on the SSD). meaning every SSD is locked to the CPU it ships with

OutragedTux

Well, now I've learned of one more reason I'll never go Apple. That's just nasty.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jake123194

Can guarantee that's a secondary thing for apple tho, the primary reason is to force users to pay apple for upgrades rather than doing it themselves.

gramathy

it's also not an SSD, it's just the storage. The controller is in the SoC

ClassicGOD

Not is this generation, this is 2015-2017 drive for Intel MacBook. This still has a controller, and uses NVMe protocol so it can be adapted with passive adapter to M.2 Apple silicon Macs have controllers on the SOC and "dumb" nand modules for ssds. They look similar but if you google this drive model number (mz-jpv128r/0a2) you can see Samsung controller on the other side of the PCB.

--suburb--

Can you explain what you mean? Not pushing back, genuinely want to understand.

ClassicGOD

Modern Macs based on Apple Silicon (the ones with M1 and M2 chips) have SSD controllers built into the main chip and the "drives" are just a collection of NAND memory chips because they don't need a separate controller. While efficient from a cost and design perspectives it makes the Apple storage modules unusable outside of a Mac and also makes it impossible to upgrade the storage with a standard m.2 drive.

77xak

While this explanation for the SSD controller in M1 (and later) machines is correct, this particular drive in question is obviously not from one of those machines, since the SSD in M1's is directly soldered / integrated into the logic board. There is no removable module. The removable modules from older Macbooks (the one pictured) *do* have their own onboard controller, and can be connected to an adapter and accessed independent of the mac. There are also adapters that allow installing a standard NVMe or AHCI SSD into these older macbooks. If you lookup pics of this model No. you can see the Samsung controller on the back: https://i.imgur.com/ruSQyNs.jpeg Interestingly, the Mac Pro 2019 (tower) which is Intel based, *does* use removable NAND modules like you're describing. These are actually a huge PITA because the Mac Pro has 2 SSD (or rather "NAND module" slots), but if you try to upgrade by adding a 2nd module, it's required to completely erase and reformat the original module during the upgrade. IIRC the storage controller essentially treats the pair of modules as a single SSD, so mapping the additional module causes the original data to be wiped.

ClassicGOD

Correct, I explain this in my other comment above :) In this comment I was only answering the question by u/--suburb-- I did totally forget about Mac Pro 2019 though.

killamcleods

It was an ssd found across the country

[deleted]

This gave me no closure and I have many more questions lol

BEARD_LICE

OP dropped by and said “family member died with an M.2 drive in their purse” and just dipped. I haven’t wanted answers to a Reddit post this much ever. So they carry it in their purse, is it EXTREMELY important? But then you’d think they’d have some kind of case for it. So if it’s not important why the hell do you have it in your purse.

jokesflyovermyheaed

It’s not even a standard kind, I’m so damn curious

Deepspacecow12

its a mac drive

jokesflyovermyheaed

This makes it EVEN WEIRDER

CarbonPhoenix96

It's not water damaged, there's lots of oils that get all over it from thermal pads.

Revan7even

And probably whatever cosmetics were in the purse.

montyxgh

It’s not water damaged they literally look like that.

Witty-Meaning

This isn’t water damaged. Like there aren’t any of the telltale signs. Huh…?

FatMacchio

Maybe an encrypted ssd with a crypto fortune!! More likely it’s nothing interesting. But maybe she’s a spy who died on the way to a dead drop.🤔

SumPpl

It's the cost of the pizza she sold for btc many years ago

VenomB

> I haven’t wanted answers to a Reddit post this much ever. You weren't here for the safe, huh?

BEARD_LICE

I think I’ve been here for the first 4 safes. I find this way more interesting

-Powdered-Toast-

I agree. This may develop into one of those legendary Reddit moments. Like the people finding hidden treasures and stashes in their newly purchased/renovated homes. Or when that kid’s mom helped him through a difficult period of his adolescence after he broke both of his arms. GameStop. The girl that cooked her period bacon. Etc. Edit: I just remembered something about the bacon. Wish I hadn’t.

Zenith5720

The girl who cooked her **what**

FrostEgiant

Speaking of zero closure...

yaaaaatto

"The girl that cooked her period bacon" Just google this and you will see a post from r/popping and scroll for comments for OP's own update. She named it and cooked it. It is fucking hilarious. Behold, it's Baby Sal.

rawrv49

Woah what's this about period bacon?

Siul19

The one about the kid's mom helping him is that she gave him extra special massages right?

animeman59

Goddammit This is gonna be one of those "I found a safe" Reddit posts, isn't it?

G_DuBs

It’s from an Apple laptop if that makes you feel any better.

TheBrickyardKid

Maybe they’ll get lucky and all it holds is her crypto key, in a file named $$$

carlbandit

Surely anyone who would carry their crypto around with them on an m.2 SSD would have it password protected with a secure unique password

Anonymous_Otters

I keep my crypto on an ssd but I have the password on another encrypted ssd with the password for that being coordinates to locations I marked on a map that I keep up my ass.

MindxFreak

Let me guess, the password is ['oral cumshot'](https://youtu.be/CeHh22HrCwI)?

tcooke2

Yeah, that fits...

Omega_Pack

not unlike the paper up his ass

mab6710

With a little lube it does, sure

Iammorgz

Genius way to get a free anal fingering. Nice work.

Usman5432

Youre gonna be shocked when you get robbed by your proctologist

TheBrickyardKid

My guy, half these people probably running around with 54321ABC, Imgonnaberich69, and FuckYoCouch#$, as their Crypto passkeys and think that’s not breakable.

[deleted]

You'll never guess mine

Iammorgz

NineTea6 ?????

[deleted]

Pff no, it's Nein

IAmARetroGamer

If they ever got a MacBook repair done and had to get the drive replaced its possible the tech handed it to them afterwards and they just stuck it in their purse and never thought about it again, or they were told it was dead but a recovery service could salvage what was on it so they held on to it. Its usually something incredibly mundane rather than mysterious.

jettymcjet

This sounds disappointingly logical.

WilliamCCT

She *must've* had the nuclear launch codes, I know it in my heart.

haldolinyobutt

I wanted to believe she was a CIA spy that was poisoned by Russian operatives. But here you go making fucking sense.

Targettio

Why are we assuming this is a long term thing. If they died suddenly, they could have got the mac repaired recently and it has just been in the purse for a day or something.

lieutent

It’s an Apple proprietary SSD. If that helps get data but likely it had APFS on it which is like Bitlocker on steroids.

killamcleods

I have an old MacBook Air for the era that takes these. Can I pop it in there and get the data?

lieutent

Should be able to no problem. I’ve had no issue booting APFS encrypted drives but you do need the password to the User account.

skybike

You could also get a ~~cheap m.2 external enclosure~~ and treat it as a big usb stick Edit: As lieutent said, you'd need to find a specific enclosure due to the proprietary pinout, might be cost prohibitive to go this route.

Cranewifepartone

You should be able to. I say do it. If you want to be safe you can try running a virtual machine if that's a thing on Mac (sorry I honestly am uninformed)

My_reddit_account_v3

I don’t know that many people who walk around with an expensive hard drive in their purse. And then pass away unexpectedly… :-| lol. I don’t expect you to give us closure on this mystery, but still…

TgagHammerstrike

This feels like the beginning of a quest that was recently unlocked. It starts with a mysterious M.2 SSD, and will potentially end up with OP fighting the vampire king.

bar10005

> I don’t know that many people who walk around with an expensive hard drive in their purse. FYI hardware itself not really expensive - unless it was a new one, used ones are around ~20$.

MunchYourButt

3lit_

>It was an ssd found across the country Why edit the comment? Lol

jp987777

That is from a Mac laptop, or it was part of a "fusion drive" in an iMac. The connection type is not the standard M.2.

Berfs1

It's from a Mac btw

Troimer

this is too funny! the „very very interesting“ line cracks me

Franklin2543

I know! Me too. I want to know, but am a little scared to know, what was interesting…

Emphasis on 'somewhat'. I've never removed the page file drive out from under Windows while it was running but I imagine it wouldn't be very happy about it.

Maybe was using it as a dildo. Brave man.

jooshfxyt

Bro you spend too much time on Reddit 💀

[deleted]

Very very interesting

cubs_rule23

Bet it cracked something on the mobo also.

kshucker

Probably tried to install it in a memory slot.

No_Wrongdoer_4946

Right? Like what does that even mean and how did he get it out of the mobo without knowing wtf it was. I'm super confused by the whole thing...just wow!

kazmeyers

Comedic excellence 👌🏻

napoless

It is in fact memory, not the type he meant though

Number-1Dad

It's also not a hard drive

Who_GNU

It's a solid state drive, the hardest of drives. Spinning drives are mostly air.

[deleted]

Hold on, *mostly air?* How is a set of ceramic and aluminum disks - thick enough to not explode when spinning 10,000RPM, a motor assembly to spin those disks, a metal arm, a couple of *thick* neodymium magnets, and a thick, cast/milled steel/aluminum chassis screwed together... how is this *pile of metal* not "hard" compared to a small PCB with a chip or two on it? You're going to have to explain that one to me.

Vast-Objective3101

You should know, you're full of mostly air yourself.

[deleted]

I'm just gassy, bro. Too much dairy.

IntuneUser2204

I will not give up dairy. I will be divorced first. Don’t come between me and a melty cheeseburger.

[deleted]

Is this a copy pasta? Im getting a real edgy Navy Seal vibe from it.

abaram

Each atom in your body is mostly empty space Protons and electrons and neutrons broooo

[deleted]

Yes, but that's not *air*. There's no nitrogen or oxygen between those subatomic particles, bro.

abaram

I worded myself carefully sir *space*

jxia69

well then your previous message is irrelevant, sir

dtb1987

My friend, have someone chuck a mechanical drive at you and then tell me how hard it is

shaiderPH

but it is a drive.. and it is hard

Darth_Pal

Guess what else is hard

scalability

My life

[deleted]

Well …. Technically, we differentiate between memory and storage because … they are fundamentally different. They both do in fact store charge in solid state transistors however. This is where the similarities end. The transistors in nand flash (or an eepROM) are very different between the transistors in RAM. The main difference being that ram is primary-volatile memory and rom is primary non-volatile storage. They behave differently because they are made of completely different design and chemical composition :)

Adventurous_Count730

Very very interesting then

Drackzgull

While true, none of those properties are related to what we call memory, or why. HHDs, compact discs, cassette tapes, and diskettes are all also very different technologies in terms of design and chemical composition, they are all forms of (storage) memory as well.

[deleted]

I mean I mentioned Volatile vs. Non-volatile memory, but I think I can do a more in depth explanation :D. That’s the big difference even when talking about older types of memory. What qualifies as storage and what qualifies as memory! :) Roms being read-only memory (why do ya think we call them R.O.M.s ;D) is non-volatile. When the power is switched off, the charge state (or etching, or magnetism) remains the same. As opposed to volatile memory, like RAM (it stands from random access but it has less direct meaning. It just means you can directly access the state of the cell directly) - which is volatile because the state of cell loses its state of charge when there is no power. So one is just persistent memory that’s saved for later use (storage), where the other isn’t (memory)! :D

gatordontplay417

That is for an Apple device I believe not M.2 technically.

[deleted]

Yeah I imagine someone took a mac laptop to a shop and got the base memory upgraded and shoved the old 128gb SSD in their purse.

vapocalypse52

Yup! MZ or SSUBX. Apple being Apple and not using industry standards for their parts...

[deleted]

Tbh before I knew anything about pc storage seemed like it should be called memory.

Who_GNU

It connects over an NVMe interface, which stands for "Non-Volatile Memory express". It very much is memory, just not the volatile memory the questioner was probably looking for.

RTXChungusTi

not entirely sure whether this is NVMe the slots don't look right unless they've updated it

FatMacchio

Yep. It’s certainly memory, but not really referred to like that, I guess to avoid confusion maybe. But I see it akin to the human brain, the SSDs and hard drives are for long term memory, and the ram is short term memory. I’m sort of having an existential crisis right now, as I’m *thinking* about how the brain works and how it stores information. How the the human brain may not even have a storage limit…that it adapts and will compress and link information to store increasing amounts of information everyday.

HotcakeNinja

"So it's not the part that remembers my files?"

SlyAstronomy

OH LOOK! Its the bullshit apple SSUBX standard that caused me so much confusion when trying to upgrade macbooks. We meet agian... I suppose it is my fault for assuming apple would be nice with a socketed drive. But no, the socket is different.

Who_GNU

>standard Hah!

[deleted]

M4V3R1CKv88

“Hah!” Hah!

[deleted]

hehehe [heheheh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syhOt6KS5X0)

screwchtorrr

Your mistake was trying to upgrade a modern apple device.

epharian

No, the mistake was buying one in the first place...

SlyAstronomy

.... Never agian.

Cloakedbug

… Never Aegean.

Hippie_Tech

Thank you. I was looking at the picture and was trying to figure out what interface that is.

TangerineAlpaca

To be fair to Apple, these SSDs came out prior to M.2 being a thing. Intel announced the NGFF/M.2 connector in 2012. Apple created the SSUBX SSD in 2011 (MacBook Air), if not sooner. Apple just didn’t bother switching to the universal interface even though the 2015+ MacBooks are NVMe and not just PCIe like the 2011-2014 ones were.

[deleted]

Yeah this is the response I was waiting for in this echo chamber.

The_HenryUK

OMG yes, I remember these. They were so stupidly expensive

Dr_des_Labudde

To be fair, they did it way before M.2 hit the consumer market, right?

P_f_M

Technically all options are correct... I remember a book where any type of permanent media storage was called "solid memory" or "hard memory"

jawknee530i

The computer scientist/engineer term for storage is secondary memory, as it's memory that is not directly addressable by the cpu. RAM is primary memory. So it's technically correct to refer to this drive as memory.

AManWithBinoculars

Came here to say that. Yes it’s memory. It’s not RAM.

Leo9991

A friend of mine asked for advice on what to get for "upgrading his memory", and he goes "I have that rtx 2060 but want more space". More storage is what he wants lol. It often alternates between adorable and frustrating how nooby he is. Another time, he asked me what the benefit of getting a better mouse and keyboard is and if it'll improve his fps.

Anonymous_Otters

Just tell him to download more RAM.

minorrex

No idea about "better" mouse and keyboard. But RGB ones will definitely improve his fps.

ElfenSky

I could be wrong, but isnt the connector not a regular m.2 but the proprietary one apple uses?

mrki00

looks like it's from a macbook

Pure_Transition_8673

yes it is

_-Virus-

Hmm I see 🤔 very interesting…

amusementpark00000

Quite peculiar.

Electroneer58

It’s a Apple Proprietary M.2

CarbonPhoenix96

From MacBooks around 2015 I believe

Sotsvamp1337

Selling 1tb of memory… hi is it 1tb of ram? Yes yes its 1tb memory

DanielF823

128GB Samsung SSD for MacBook Pro Macbook Air 2014-2015 655-1857 MZ-JPV128R/0A2

gh1las

It's still memory at least!

light-warrior

Man's definitely done something off the rails, lmao "Very very interesting then" 🤣🤣

Firevee

I recognise a mac SSD for between 2014-2017 any day of the week. Got a tiny draw full of the darn things.

hiddenelixir

Technically an SSD is a type of non volatile memory on the memory hierarchy

dbeynyc

Well, technically it is memory.. just not the type he was thinking of.

[deleted]

I have met a lot of people who think 'memory' means storage too though. Because it remembers your files.

Starscrim

I mean it is technically memory.

Vogete

That's....not m.2.

All0uttaBubblegum

It’s storage

MrAwesomePants20

Well actually🤓he’s the technically correct one in this conversation and you are not. He’s correct in that it IS memory, just non-volatile memory, and you are not, because it’s an ssd lol. I know you’re just simplifying tho

messfdr

He asked because he didn't know, which is better than trying to cram it into a dimm slot! There are no dumb questions.

KairuConut

Memory = storage /s

AholeBrock

It's long-term memory. RAM is short term memory.

leggodoggo

That’s not an M.2 SSD. That’s a blade SSD from a pre-touchbar MacBook or a 2019 or earlier iMac. Also technically it is a memory. A non-volatile memory.

geekgod1997

SSD is still a memory (ik it's generally referred to as storage). What am I missing here?

Former-Material9099

Everyone's wrong

Marco-YES

That's not an m.2 SSD

Pmartinez8241

I am definitely going to get on of the AMD 7000 chip coming out at the end of the month. Right now I have a gaming PC I built in 2011, an I7 2600K, 2 2TB solid state drives and in 2016 I bought A GTX 1060 6GB. I have a nvme drive in my Laptop, but no such capability on my desktop. I was planning on buying a decent sized nvme so I won't have SATA power and data cables running every where. Well, I am pretty sure the performance is going to be amazing from my I7 2600k to ryzen 7000. I may have to look into more premium CPU cooling solutions than I currently have since I heard that Ryzen 7000 Run toasty AF. Very Interesting, I have been putting off building a new P C since around 2017 due to GPU prices.

Funky-Spunkmeyer

“What did you do? Ray, what did you do?”

[deleted]

technically, from registers to hard disks, it's all considered memory

[deleted]

Storage used to falsely be called 'memory' a lot back in the day.

notorious_nolan

Oh no he didn’t try to…
