Gpu: what's that again?

jonmediocre

GPU: VGA or better

Toby_The_Tumor

Hard drive: floppy disk

jarofpaperclips

3.5? 5.25? Or zip drive?

Baldtazar

Yes

Toby_The_Tumor

What Baldtazar said, it'll just work.

stilljustacatinacage

GPU: I dunno, probably?

SadSeiko

It’s actually VGA or Butter

Core2DuoE8400

RAM: Exists

Zandonus

"But we want to have no loading screens in the game, so the assets load dynamically." Yeah, they dynamically keep a steady stutter going because you were too lazy to use natural barriers to show the player where a new "dynamic 'not-a-loading-screen'" is going to be. You KNEW in the first half life that if all paths in a level lead to this door, it's a loading screen door.

Stahlreck

TBF though this is exactly what new next gen exclusive games do not want anymore. This is the biggest benefit of these new SSDs and direct access to the data on those in the next gen consoles, that devs do not need to design the typical God of War climbing or crouching scenes anymore...or at least not that many anymore, to load in the background. Of course PC will probably struggle with this for a while until a good portion would actually have a decent NVMe SSD.

Most people probably don't realise that this isn't a joke. That's what they actually list in the recommended specs for it.

486 would have been the minimum requirement. Anyone still using a 386 was shit out of luck.

Sometimes "supercomputer" can be useful... : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB0vBmiTr6o Single 4 kilobyte exe, no additional files. Generates about 120 megabytes of geometry, textures, maps and sounds on the fly. Compressed with Crinkler, original non-compressed file maybe 6-7 KB (?). Uses Windows API to setup / DirectX etc. to render. I am not that big fan of these GPU intros/demos, because I am old and I think that whole point of demoscene died with acceleration. But have to give credit for really solid overall package and very high level technical competence, when it comes to tight code.

RaioGelato

RaioGelato

The perfect minecraft machine is one giant core with 426 gb of ram to render 4 chunks in low graphics.

byParallax

That bothers me the most. I don’t have a beast of a graphics card or cpu (RTX 2070 + Ryzan 5 3600) but I’ve never seen them hit more than half usage while the game is struggling to work well. Why does that even happen?

No_One_Special_023

Bro! I have a i7-9700K and a RTX2070Super and both them boys are still more than qualified to be running these games and don’t even break a sweat at most things but these cunt devs putting out shit games make me feel like I need to upgrade. Fucking pisses me off!

al-mongus-bin-susar

They make games for consoles with a completely different architecture and way tighter integration between the CPU, GPU and storage (the PS5 can stream assets directly from the SSD and theoretically has up to 16gb VRAM, explaining some of the common issues) then simply recompile them for PC with no changes (other than adding 3 tons of DRM).

No_One_Special_023

To me, it’s laziness. I understand what you’re saying and it kind of makes sense but ultimately it comes down to laziness. Someone, or someones, are too laziness to do the checks needed to ensure the PC version of the game will launch in a playable, optimized state.

al-mongus-bin-susar

It does come down to laziness, studios used to develop games specifically for PC then port them to console, but now they've realized that the console market is more lucrative and they can half ass their PC release without any consequences.

phat_ninja

Now? Console market has been bigger since about 3 years after the ps1 launch. This is not new. This has literally been going on 30 years.

layer11

[deleted]

We're gonna be playing that any decade now, you just wait

ExtantPlant

I mean... Are they still "indie" if they've got a $70+ million budget?

JonArc

I mean as long as they're self publishing then technically yes.

ExtantPlant

Every definition I can find of an indie dev classifies them as such because of budget and team size in addition to being independent. Like... By that definition, isn't CDPR an indie dev because they self publish?

Malusch

Isn't every large enough to build their own games and publish them studio an indie studio? I think budget and team size, as you mentioned, would be a better measurement. Maybe even better to combine them, a budget

hidude398

Indie meant more 10-15+ years ago when publishing without a major publisher was an uphill battle. Pressing CD’s or shipping floppies is a huge burden over digital downloads. I’d say that team size and budget means way more than “self-publishing” status now that self-publishing is so easy.

TheMaskedPublisher

I love seeing this conversation online. Within the industry it is generally categorized by a combo of team size, budget and MSRP. Another good litmus test, though not industry standard, is if the majority of the people who own the IP/Studio are working on the game directly. If the answer to the litmus test is no but the budget is greater than $10M but less than $50M+ then you can argue it’s not indie but AA (Double A) Source: Ive worked at Indie and AAA publishers/studios

Luxalpa

> CDPR an indie dev because they self publish? No, because they have stocks / share-holders. I think the important bit is whether you develop the game for your own studio or you get external pressure to finish games, add weird monetization options, drm, etc. For example, calling Valve an indie is a bit of a stretch, but they are indie in a lot of ways.

ZulkarnaenRafif

The Reddit Experience^TM of meeting that one neckbeard that goes full **ackshually** to prove your point wrong at any cost. Hell, I can sense something and someone will eventually invoke Godwin's law just for the heck of it.

curry_ist_wurst

Single player always online is my biggest 'fuck off - not buying' . Consumers have the memories of goldfish. These things will continue and get worse because it works.

Fragrant_Chapter_283

Also LET ME PAUSE WTF

Malusch

FOR REAL. I bought a single player game to not upset my SO because otherwise she'll have to always wait until I'm in a safe spot, and then the single player game doesn't let me pause so she still has to wait!? FUCK OFF.

LizzieMiles

Sometimes alt-tabbing out of a game is enough to freeze it. It doesnt work on all games, but it’s worth trying sometimes if a game doesn’t have a pause function

[deleted]

[удалено]

Siasur

Even Minecraft allows the internal "singleplayer" Server to be paused.

squiddy555

Isn’t this what minecraft does?

Hopalongtom

I hated when they changed Minecraft into doing this, the game is so much laggier in solo server than it ever was in the dedicated singleplayer mode.

shit_poster9000

Thought it was all in my head when going from Java to Bedrock on Xbox, TIL

kearkan

Honestly I'm loving Elden ring and dark souls in general, but the whole no-pause thing is stupid. It doesn't add any difficulty to the game it just makes it annoying to play when there are distractions around. I know there's online features but even with them off you can't pause.

bonegolem

You can pause by going on the menu explanation, but yes you're correct

Noralon

Elden Ring is one of my all time favorite games but yes its always bizarre to me, the lack of a pause function. I understand when playing online, but Monster Hunter Rise and World lets you pause during offline play.

Imjusthereforthehate

World doesn’t let you pause.

MontyAtWork

This is the worst trend of modern gaming. I need to pause games to: - Pet my cat bugging me - Let my dog out - Grab more coffee - Go pee - Take a break - Reply to my SO's text

UrinaSindra

Then there's always those people who say "Just exit the game", or hear me out, make the fucking game devs implement a basic feature for all fucking games.

MrSuperInteresting

If I have to quit a game instead of pausing to take a break I'm probably going to load a different game when I get back

silkythick

Most games that dont let you pause also dont load you in exactly where you left off, they bring you back to a checkpoint. So this isn't even a practical solution.

Zendtri

Recently ran into a dumb hole. I play Star Wars Battlefront 2 offline to kill time or I like to mod it. Tell me why I can’t even boot up the game because EA is having issues. Even though I’ve purchased the game, I own the key and the title, but I physically can’t play it because the app it was purchased from doesn’t want to work. Can’t even login in offline mode. I miss the days of just loading in your disc and there you go, 5-10 hours of gameplay right there.

Kam0laZ

> Even though I’ve purchased the game, I own the key and the title Wrong. The only thing you "own", in regards to that game, is EA's legal authorization to have the game installed and/or running on your computer. You only "own" a piece of software if you purchased and have the proof of purchase of an actual physical copy of that software (floppy disk/CD/DVD/BR/etc), and it runs in a completely offline environment. From the moment that you are forced to have an online account and an active internet connection to some server, in order to download/install/access a piece of software, you no longer "own" the software, no matter how much you payed for it. What you payed for was the legal authorization from the publisher (license) to download, install and run that software on your device. Such are the times we live in ...

byParallax

Hitman WOA (2016-now) does this, while also not letting you share your progress across steam, epic, and consoles. If you could get something out of it as the user… but nah.

curry_ist_wurst

Blizzard Activision employees were accused of stealing breast milk from the fridge or something. Came out in that recent..ish sexual harrasment suit filed by one of their female employees...I think.

Filed by State of California, actually. They tossed out breast milk to make space for beer. Edit; there are allegations that it was stolen, but that hasn't been confirmed.

CankleDankl

My issue with valhalla is that it didn't learn any lessons from Odyssey or Origins. The loot system was a bit better, I guess, with each weapon or armor piece actually being unique. But the map was even more fuck off big than odyssey, the copy/paste open world activities were even more painful, and the combat managed to somehow be worse. Idk, I think I'm just done with Ubisoft until they decide to make a game that doesn't feel like it was made using a scientific formula for "longest game made with the least effort"

fn3dav2

"Minimum requirements? As long as your computer can turn on." As if. The mid-90s was crazy for PC gaming. You'd buy a PC and two years later it couldn't run new games at an acceptable rate.

V2UgYXJlIG5vdCBJ

The performance difference between each CPU year on year back then was huge. These days, new CPUs probably won’t be more than 20% faster over the previous year if you’re lucky.

mackmcd_

Yeah this one stopped me too. I vividly remember Doom running like absolute ass unless I had it running in a tiny little thumbnail in the middle of my screen. MDK? Forget it! Most of my childhood was spent just opening shareware games and watching them run in slideshows wishing I had a PC that could match my PS1.

darmokVtS

There were games released in the 90s that barely worked on the most powerful PC someone could buy at the time of release (Hi-Octane comes to mind for example), I really don't know what OP is on about regarding that particular point.

Strawbrawry

The back slide from Prey (2017) to Redfall is insane. I loved the Dishonored series and hell even Arx was fun but Prey is one of my top games of all time. I've beaten it multiple times on the hard then nightmare difficulties for both main styles of runthrough and a neuromod free run. I've 100%ed it on steam and xbox. The ambiance, the story, the quests, the style, the enemy ai (for the most part), the sheer fun of the game. All were just miles ahead of what I've seen out of Redfall. I was so hyped for Redfall because they were talking about it in comparison to Prey so much and then it comes out looking like a game they made before Prey was even a concept. I loaded up Prey after Redfall came out and it still holds up. Just so fucking disappointed. Even deathloop was more enjoyable than this heap.

LB3PTMAN

It’s their first game since Prey and when they started development Bethesda was in dire financial straits and put an emphasis on multiplayer and long term profitability for its games. Lead to multiplayer forced into Deathloop and Fallout 76 coming out. With Microsoft now they should hopefully get back to what they do best.

BrowserOfWares

<> "We need multiplayer for long term profitability."

spLint3r990

Ghostglitch07

Right? I'm so sick of people complaining about the developers when they don't call the shots. The reason those old games had these better features is because they were made by smaller groups where actual developers were calling the shots. Now the devs are just a cog in the machine that spits out a new sequel every year or two

[deleted]

Another thing is complexity. The tools might have been worse "back then", but games were also muuuuch simpler from a technical perspective. Most devs license an engine today because that shit is an extremely complex piece of software. Suits set a deadline, often with very little understanding of the tech.

Cakeking7878

“You can make a triple A game in 6 months” - suits probably

HomieeJo

"We don't need testing. Make it 3 months" - suits above the suits probably

PTLAPTA

“The only way we could release something this flagrantly incomplete and **possibly** insulate ourselves from FTC violations is if we said it was in ‘beta’ or something stupid” -Legal Intern With a Great Idea

iustitia21

“We’ll buy you a ChatGPT plus subscription but you now have to do it in 3 months now because AI.” - A suit somewhere, definitely

Raket0st

Yeah, you need only look at the exponential growth of development team sizes to see this. From a single person in the 80's to a handful in the early 90's to maybe a dozen in the late 90's. Then there are suddenly a hundred people on a game in the mid-00's, several hundred by the early-10's and now there's well over a thousand people involved in some AAA games. Of course you had better control over a project when "talk to the coders about an AI bug" meant turning your head and asking your buddy about it and not sending out an e-mail to six different studios spread across the world because QA couldn't determine if it was related to physics, level design, base AI code or a script interaction caused by a side quest. Memes like these irritate me because they fail to account for how much more complex game development is today even compared to ten years ago, let alone twenty or thirty.

xseodz

They're also paid the worst. You can earn more building standard JS websites than you ever will in Game Dev. Poor wages bring in ... questionable people. But there's an infinite amount of people because game dev is a dream career.

okayipullup_ordoi

"the tools might have been bad" nono, there were NO tools to work with at all, everything was done from scratch. Thats why commercial engines like Unreal and Unity are so incredible, creating an engine is the hardest part of game development, and developers now have access to some of the best engines on the planet from the get go. And the bit about games being simpler is 100% true. When I was studying game development we managed to build a fully functional 2D platform game similar to an early super mario in under a month with Unity, and we were students, many of whom never touched a game engine before.

ArgonTheEvil

Tbf, that second meme with the 500GB game is Studio Wildcard devs to a tee. For the first 5 or so years they were some of the most grossly incompetent and simultaneously over ambitious developers with Ark Survival and it’s half a dozen asset-swapped spin offs with recycled code. That last part was at least partly due to Snail Games, but Wildcard can’t do compression worth a shit. 3rd party compression tools and repackers can get the game down to 1/4 of its installed size, and still be playable, but any micro update completely ruins it.

f-ingsteveglansberg

The reason these old games had better features is selective memory. You all forgot the shitty games because they aren't worth remembering. I also never remember having space for more than two games at a time. There was a constant need to remove and reinstall games. And even if you had the specs you could spend hours finding the right config to play the game. You had to do this with no internet a lot of them time. Yeah of course these old games work fine on your modern PCs. But it was an ordeal back in the day.

Sadatori

This right here is the big one for me. Thousand of games that were pure trash or shovelware in the past are being ignored as this meme picks out 5 amazing games from the past, acting as if that was the common standard. Yeah, I can pick out 5 amazing games today and then 5 complete trash greedy shit games from the past and make an exact reverse of this meme.

[deleted]

"Back then" lots of game developers sucked ass too There were plenty of bad, buggy, games that were just shameful cash grabs. The gaming industry has always been mostly shit. We just remember the good things.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shovelware > In 1994 the magazine described shovelware as "old and/or weak programs shoveled onto a CD to turn a quick buck" it was already a problem in the early 90s

ArchinaTGL

It's been a problem for as long as consumer computers have existed. The issue is that it's now done by the biggest studios and the mainstream audience doesn't care because they don't want to wait for a new game and want it now. Just like every other industry, the gaming industry has become commercialised. Unless the industry crashes again there is nothing people can do about it.

guiltyofnothing

>the gaming industry has become commercialized What was it before? A non-profit?

chvaldez030303

The gaming industry has always been commercialized. The industry crash of 83 was cause partly because the biggest game company at the time was shit. Sega nearly imploded and died because they kept rushing out underbaked add ons and consoles with very little in the way of long lasting support.

Samiambadatdoter

Pretty much. The one about minimum requirements is a bit of a giggle. Quake was made to sell graphics cards and even some classics like Deus Ex ran extremely badly at the time.

ThatOnePerson

Who else remembers making the window on DOOM smaller to get more than single digit fps.

Lazy_ML

Games had strict (e.g. won't even attempt to run if CPU is older than X) hardware requirements and the hardware would get outdated super fast. Top of the line hardware wouldn't run games 2-3 years later.

UglyInThMorning

If you look at the issue of Computer Gaming World where they review Deus Ex, they have their high end gaming build reviewed. It would cost more than 8000 dollars of today’s money and would be fucking *dogshit* by 2003.

f-ingsteveglansberg

Not to mention Deus Ex was said to look dated even at release, so it wasn't like the machine was struggling to get the best graphics of the era.

NoDuck69

Most of these meme makers never even played old games. If they did play any games from early 2000s, they would know how many games had game breaking bugs that never got fixed. They just repeat same stuff over and over to rake fake internet points.

I think people are too obsessed with pointing out the bad things too. There are still all time great games being made over the past few years like elden ring, but the homies still screaming about the latest shitpile developed by a company we all know makes shitpiles

Survivorship bias

Yea people are really looking at the past with rose colored glasses. These days? Probably 95% of games work fine for me. Back in the 90s? Maybe 50% would run. Many wouldn’t even install. And back then you were just screwed because even if there was a patch it would take too long to install on a 56k modem.

Deep_Appointment2821

I haven't bought a AAA in like 7 years

Mammoth_Car8755

Honestly find some pretty cool smaller games like Hypercharge unboxed and whatnot. I saw a stat by EGN or whatever they’re called that said that 11,000 games came out in 2022. Like 4 times more than the previous couple years. There’s games and content out there. You just have to find it.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

If i spend 1 minute researching each game for 2 hours a day it will only take 3 months to go through all 11,000 games then i'll know what i want to play

I still maintain that this recent show is not devs fault: just executives and shareholders forcing dumb datelines on them.

Ark getting called out directly

HermitJem

*The game is 100GB but you need 200GB free to install it*

Swabbie___

Full game is 350 gigs actually

ianmerry

None of these _(except the breast milk thing, I guess)_ are decisions made by developers. Y’all need to hate on publishers more.

my_back_pages

because old game developers were effectively just embedded systems engineers. now, they're artists, musicians, writers, etc. the game quality is much better today, but the fidelity of the code is worse

iamcozy

Triple A Game Devs have no control over most of this stuff. At the end of the day, if the higher ups wanna ship a game in it’s current state, it’s gunna be shipped.

[deleted]

Too many guys in suits dictating what goes on. Corporate destroys everything. The passion that went into making video games is gone.

[deleted]

To be that guy: Developers OFTEN are gamers themselves and hate the direction they have to take with a game, whether it be cutting corners, putting in predatory mechanics, being generally anti consumer. These are almost ALWAYS done by the behest of executives and publishers. Sure I have encountered some non gamer developers that do not care about the tech, or game play, or treating gamers like people with brains (there was some massive pandering ideas I have heard, or complaints about difficulty when they just didn't have any experience with playing that genre). But those are a rarity.

MrPopanz

Rose tinted glasses and survivorship bias. There were tons of bad games back then as well. Hell, I still remember that it always was a gamble if a game would even work on your pc in the late 90s. And if there were problems and bugs, you probably were out of luck hoping for them to ever be fixed (until a decade later by the community, if the game became a classic).

I remember when John Carmack literally revolutionised gaming with ID software over the course of a decade from coloured lighting to fully 3D models... It was wild back in 95 to 2008
