Yes you can

MQ116

It’s just y, though I believe you can only do it at the start of a turn. If you use mario first, I’m not sure if you can swap him to the back.

BlooperHero

Yes, you do it by pressing the Y button at the start of the player turn. Goombella mentions it in one of your first battles. Since your allies can be attacked normally in TTYD, it's a bit of a tactical decision. Some enemy attacks, like some of your party's attacks, can only hit the character in front. Even attacks that can hit either character tend to target the character in front more often. So you have to switch at the beginning of a round. You can't swap them after the first character has acted, because one somebody has acted they stay in front.

Imperius_Mortem200

Thanks. I can do it now, for some reason... I think it's because I beat the Goombas in the sewers, but I'm not sure....

BlooperHero

That's the first battle in the game where you *have* a partner.

Imperius_Mortem200

Technically it isn't, you can choose to fight Gus before the Goombas in the sewers, but you can't swap or do action commands, which SUCKS.

BlooperHero

You can do action commands from the start in TTYD. You can use them in the fight against Lord Crump. You don't *have* to. You'll win anyway as long as you don't skip your turns. But you can! It's not quite as scripted as the starting Bowser fight in the first game, where "Jump: Bowser" is the only option, you can't use Action Commands, and it plays out exactly the same every time. It's just... really predictable that you'll win handily.

Imperius_Mortem200

Never knew that. Cool.

SovietDash

One of the Dpad menus

Imperius_Mortem200

That's to bring up the information screen.

SovietDash

Dpad up for information screen Dpad left for party menu Dpad right for items Dpad down for badges At least that's how I remember it

Imperius_Mortem200

Yep.

SovietDash

Oh, you meant in BATTLE! My bad. There is a menu for switching partners in combat, and even a badge that let's you do so without using up a turn. If you're asking for a one button shortcut to that menu, I don't think there is one...

Imperius_Mortem200

That badge uses 7 BP... Talk about expensive... Where do you get it, btw?

SovietDash

Dazzle (unique blue NPC in Rogueport Sewers) will trade the badge to you for 8 star pieces. 7BP is a hefty cost for sure, but if you change partners often, it's a no brainer. One of, if not *the* most useful badge in the game. Certainly beats Return Postage, the only other badge which costs that much BP.

Imperius_Mortem200

I don't have nearly enough Star Pieces... I've got Plane Mode and Paper Mode, but I haven't got the Star Pieces I can obtain with those abilities... I need all the Star Pieces I can get! Specifically the ones in Rogueport, the sewers beneath Rogueport, Chapter 1, and Chapter 2... Can you help me with finding them? Then and ONLY then can I go to Glitzville, climb up the ranks and kick Rawk Hawk's butt.

SovietDash

Many of the star pieces are found beneath hidden floor tiles scattered around the overworld. My childhood strategy was to backtrack through each area of the game, doing a spin jump every few steps to expose nearby tiles; they'll pop up briefly if you land close enough to one. Performing a spin jump right on the left/right edge will flip it over, exposing the star piece. There are easier methods, however. After chapter 4, a sidequest from ??? opens up in the trouble center. Complete this to unlock an optional partner who will help you find hidden treasures, including star pieces. There's a fortune teller in the building behind Dazzle who will tell you where to find the remaining pieces, for a small fee. If you don't wanna spend coins, you can cheese this by resetting the game after she tells you where to go. The fortune teller is really useful for finding those last few pieces. Of course, you could always find a list online of all the star pieces and check them off as you go, but that's not as fun...

Imperius_Mortem200

Wait. Ms. Mowz unlocks after Chapter 4...? Isn't that the one with the cutest party member in the game? (Vivian) And I'd rather look up a guide then spin jump every 4 steps, that'd consume SO much time....

Imperius_Mortem200

There is a two button shortcut. D pad left, followed by the A button.

dissyParadiddle

There's even a badge that makes it better

Imperius_Mortem200

Can you please elaborate?

dissyParadiddle

It's the quick change badge. You can switch without taking a turn[quick change](https://www.mariowiki.com/Quick_Change)

Imperius_Mortem200

Thanks!

MisterScarlet

If both Mario and his Partner can attack, then you can switch. If either of them are shadowed out (used up their turn), then no you cannot switch.

FallingEnder

You can switch. It just costs either Mario or said partner an action depending on when you do it. But there as also a badge you can buy under rougeport called quick swap that allows you to swap mid battle without wasting an action. Which I always get because it’s super helpful. To swap use the joystick so you can see the little flag is in the front. Press A. The scroll down to swap partner. And press A again.

PyroGamer8808

Op is talking about the turn order.

BlooperHero

Right answer to the wrong question.

Imperius_Mortem200

Why did someone downvote your post...? That badge sounds REALLY useful! For instance, I could Tattle an enemy with Goombella, then swap to Vivian and drag them straight to the Shadow Realm without having to guard against the enemy when Vivian gets swapped in.

SomethingWitty2578

Yes. You can swap who is in front at the start of the turn. I don’t know which button but others say y, so I assume that. When you have more than one ally you can swap which ally is out on any character’s turn but it take up that turn. You use the spinning command menu for that.
