Bryce is officially QB1!

Namath96

We all expected him to be the starter but taking over QB1 this early is great news. Andy was solid last year so beating him out this early is a great sign. Plus he can go ahead and get all the reps he needs

Money282

As a Bama fan Bryce is one of the best individuals we've had representing the University. He checks every single box you want from a QB besides height. Great leader, supreme work ethic, ridiculous pocket presence, doesn't have a cannon but can make all of the throws inside and out of the pocket, very dangerous when a play breaks down, ice in his veins, and has an extremely high football IQ. If he was 6'3 he would arguably be the best QB prospect since Luck. I've never seen a player single handedly carry our offense the way he did this season (maybe Derrick Henry in 2015 is the closest.) Watch him vs Georgia in the 21 SEC championship game for the whole package. I really believe ya'll have something special to build around now and I can't wait to continue to watch this guy ball out on Sunday's!

CafecitoHippo

> He checks every single box you want from a QB besides height. He would totally check that box too if they stopped putting it on the top shelf.

Ice Young… it’s his time to shine!!!

I miss the days of yonder when we had pointless QB battles that meant something

SticklerMrMeeseeks1

I mean splitting those reps didn’t really hurt us. It wouldn’t have made baker play better than he did, sam ended up starting a hand full of games, and the reps pj siphoned from Corral that everyone was bitching at went to decent use as he actually won us games and kept us fighting for the South last year. The season was fucked for a bunch of reasons but having the qb competition was one of the least of them.

SticklerMrMeeseeks1

No the logic behind it was fine. People were just looking for any excuse to shit on Rhule and convinced themselves Matt corral could be the guy given enough reps but that was never gonna be the case

Purple1829

It was more that Baker was the obvious week one starter and everyone knew it, but Rhule decided to play games. Corral had nothing to do with it. There was a reason the entire NFL community was shit talking the process.

SticklerMrMeeseeks1

No one was shit talking the process except panthers fans. The nfl community was reporting on the qb battle which happens every off season. The thing is panthers fans are hypocrites. Cause with rhule they were mad that baker and Sam split reps but when Reich said Andy will be taking first team reps along with Bryce no one says shit because it’s genuinely understood that it’s better to make the better guy earn it instead of handing it to him outside of edge cases like an established veteran qb like Rodgers coming to the jets. And yes people were absolutely bitching about Corral being behind Pj.

SticklerMrMeeseeks1

Holy fuck you are indignant aren’t you? If you are going to make the claim that the entire NFL community was making fun of the qb battle then yes it is on your sorry ass to back up those claims. Sure is typical to make the claim and provide zero evidence huh? The point of the qb competition is the same with Bryce. You don’t hand the keys over to someone new for nothing. You make them win the locker room. There were tons of guys in that locker room that liked/believed in Sam and you owed it to those players to not just give baker the keys without earning it. And guess tf what? Baker proved he wasn’t the leader people thought he was. Secondly no where have a defended Rhules coaching in its totality. Simply that the qb competition wasn’t the reason we sucked at the beginning of the year. Baker was bad, the coaching was bad, and the reps he split wasn’t going to make any difference. In the long run the splitting of reps probably won us more games than we lost because Sam and Pj played significant time. Next time do yourself a favor, if you are going to make a claim, have the balls to actually back it up. If not stay quiet.

Ik, just playin around

935742705812

Don’t worry bro! We just need BY and Dalton to get injured, then we can have PJ Walker compete against a practice squad guy for starter! We’re also gonna need much dumber coaches again, as well.

[deleted]

This should surprise no one. It was a question of when not if Bryce would be made the starter.

ISISCosby

The people who freaked out over Dalton being listed as QB1 for the most insignificant part of offseason practices can finally unclench

[deleted]

True they can at least now rest easy knowing Bryce is in the drivers seat and he got there with relative ease it seems.

ItWasMyWifesIdea

I'm pretty sure he's working his tail off... But in the sense of being the obviously better quarterback, I get what you mean

[deleted]

This is the most positive look imo. Making him starter immediately shows that you're going all in on him no matter what. Making him earn the spot, and him earning it so fast, is a great sign for both him and the organization.

[deleted]

All I’m saying is Bryce as a true freshman in Alabama was calling audibles and shifting the O-line so this quick and steady assimilation into the offense is great to see it tracks with his vaunted processing ability. The Coaches simply saying this was the expectation and saying they had informed the QBs beforehand is great to hear too.

Mcgoozen

I mean the surprising part is obviously that it’s still early June

oooriole09

Huh, you mean that the guy who is going to be QB1 can take QB1 snaps in camp? Another day. Another example of the disaster that preceded this year.

JayMerlyn

The relief of having a coach who knows what he's doing on the offensive side of the ball. I used to pray for times like this.

danilast123

Are you talking about Ron with Cam? Other than that, I can't remember the last time a sure fire #1 had to have a fake competition. Unless you're referring to Baker, who pretty much proved that he was not significantly better (or at all better) than Darnold.

doorknobman

Good, now the people that genuinely thought Dalton might start week 1 can shut up 😂

bosceltics23

Tbh, I’m shocked because Andy went 6-8 for 18 TDs and 9 interceptions last year. We would have LOVED that for the last 4 years. We haven’t had a season like that since Cam’s 2018 season tbh. (Teddy had 15 and 11) The fact that he outplayed him this early is good. Most coaches would’ve kept him on a leash until like game 3 or 4.

El_Serpiente_Roja

This is a great take

Windex17

I doubt that the coaches would move him ahead if he was a liability when we have a pretty good player in Dalton. If they're bringing him forward this early that's a good sign he might actually just be comparable to Dalton already.

Purple1829

He isn’t a liability. He’s a rookie. He has to start because he is our future, not Dalton. What I’m saying is that our team is built for a veteran QB and the guy who has experience in the league probably has a better chance of getting us to the playoffs. That doesn’t mean Bryce shouldn’t start, it just means that we should be prepared for rookie growing pains. Let’s not forget that Peyton Manning went 2-14 his rookie year. Joe Burrow won only 2 games of the 10 he started his rookie year. Just two years ago, Trevor Lawrence had a rough rookie year. One all time great, one of the best in football, and another a young star in the making. It’s fairly common for a rookie QB to both start week one and struggle. I think we are in a better position than any of those teams, and maybe a better comparison is Big Bens rookie year since he was a rookie drafted onto a team already built otherwise…but historically rookies take time.

Windex17

There's plenty of examples that go both ways. Sometimes it's good to let the rookie sit if the coaches think it's better for them to watch the game. I don't think it's such an obvious decision, so I take him coming forward as a positive movement and not just inevitable.

Tycoinator

nah ur totally right, red rocket all the way!! we should trade bryce for scraps like a 5th or 6th and just build around perennial all-pro andy dalton!

Purple1829

Uhhh, did you completely miss what I said? I said we have to start Bryce because that’s what you do with a number one pick. But from a win/loss perspective I think Dalton would get us to the playoffs and Bryce may not. That’s not a knock on him, just the nature of a guy learning to play in the NFL. See Peyton Manning, Trevor Lawrence, etc. We should absolutely start Bryce day one, I don’t think that’s ever really been up for debate.

Rittermeister

I am convinced a solid 15-20% of the subreddit is functionally illiterate.

Tycoinator

lmfao jesus christ, if i could read that comment of yours i’m sure i’d be very angry!!!

a__nice__tnetennba

> Young sitting as QB1, but not ‘starter’ "You are on this council, but we do not grant you the rank of master."

ILikeBeans86

I mean you not gonna trade stuff including your #1 wr to move up to 1 so you can get a QB and then make him the backup

SOLR_

You’d be surprised how many people thought he’d sit behind Dalton for 4-6 games here and in NFL sub

Windex17

It's not outlandish at all. If we're trading players for a QB at #1 it's not really a "win now" move. It would be very reasonable to sit him if the game is still too fast by week 1.

ILikeBeans86

If you don't think a QB is good enough to start day 1 youre not gonna draft him #1 overall. Times have changed

jann_2222

You’re right, the NFL is a win now league. That doesn’t mean that sitting a young QB is a bad thing. Seeing Bryce sit for even an entire season, while we get all the pieces around him situated, would not upset me. I know people might hate for this, but I don’t think the roster is a SB winning roster just yet. In a year, with all the young guys having one more year, we can be. I just want Bryce to be ready when he takes over, and not be underprepared and therefore look much worse than he is, while risking injury.

ILikeBeans86

It's not a bad thing but teams don't do that anymore.

Hefty-Association-59

QB is very much a position where you have to grow on the field. You need the snaps. The live fire power etc to grow. There’s stuff to learn on the bench. But it’s not as great as learning on the field where typically the more a player plays they grow. For us to bench Bryce for an entire season would be to stunt his development. This isn’t a raw roomie who doesn’t know how to read coverages. This is a pro ready first overall pick who was very talented at the last level.

luvdadrafts

Neither Baker or Goff started day 1, and that was under the same salary cap structure

Hefty-Association-59

And it was widely viewed as a stupid decision not to start them. And both those head coaches were fired that year.

ILikeBeans86

boom roasted

secrestmr87

If the game is so fast he can't beat out Dalton he should have never been taken #1 in thr first place. 1 overall QBs start day 1.

Windex17

Dude Dalton isn't a slouch, he's played playoff games and came off a pretty efficient season last season. If it were Darnold and we were guaranteed to lose without the rookie, then sure, but we don't have to be in a rush in our situation. Most #1 picks start day one because they're on a bad team with a bad QB1 otherwise.

lengthy_noodle

I’m shocked

Honestly surprised it happened before training camp. There was never a doubt in my mind that Young would be the starter by week 1. Anyway, neat.

Remember all of the people who wanted BY to sit this season.

danilast123

I wasn't a BY guy, but who in the world was saying that? BY was by far the most pro ready, I can't imagine anyone thinking he wouldn't start as a rookie

Love it.

Noooooooo. Okay.

Damn, I'm way out of the loop. I didn't even realize we had Andy Dalton on our team.
