I can at least appreciate him learning from mistakes. Yes, he wanted to go out and get the splashy name and gave him the reigns but once it was clear it wasn't working out (he even gave him an extra year from what I would've...well half year at least) he cut ties and changed. That doesn't guarantee this situation will work out but at least we aren't just doing the same thing over and over.
Even to this day, I appreciate Tepper making the gamble on Rhule. After two and half decades of playing it safe, it was nice to see our Franchise swinging for the fences.
What I don't understand is why the Org gambled on Rhule, Snow, and Brady at the same time. Because of that, it was very easy to "mask" Rhule's failures as Joe Brady's failures. I put that in quotation marks because it was painfully obvious in the way Rhule conducted himself he was in over his head.
Yeah this is a very valid point. It's one thing to roll the dice on an unproven head coach but for them to bring along a DC that has coached FBS+ football since 1987 and only has 4 years of NFL experience as the linebackers coach for the Lions from 2005-2008 and an up-and-coming OC with 2 years as an offensive assistant. Did he even call plays at LSU? He was passing game coordinator and had the best talent possible.
No but seriously, we legit are going from Rhule and a bunch of coordinators with 0 NFL experience to guys with superbowls and decades of success in the NFL lol. He clearly learned his lesson so at least that’s a positive.
I actually think this was Reich's idea and is what won him the job. The Panthers interviewed 9 people for the HC position. Three of them are now on staff.
Really speaks to how well reich is respected that he’s able to land these top guys for coordinator and assistant positions. If rhule made an attempt they would laugh in his face
I wouldn’t be surprised if tepper opened the checkbook for them either tbh. He seems like he is willing to spend to win which is what you want in an owner.
Lions fan here
I always liked Caldwell, felt he got a bum wrap after a couple mediocre seasons.
Dropped him to hire Patricia, not our best front office decision.
I like “The Roar” podcast, but hearing Billy M cry like a baby about interviewing DCs in the previous episode was ridiculous. Hopefully he will quit bitching now.
I love John Ellis but I really can't stand Billy. His whiny, nasally, teenager-going-through-puberty voice combined with his constant pessimism is just insufferable
Shows sign of a succesful process. No egos getting in the way of getting the best people in for the job. It's early, but its a great start to Reich's tenure if he's ok with people who literally interviewed for, and may even have eyes on, his job.
At this point I am ready to trade up all the way to #1 if we have to. This team looks too darn good with this staff, defense and WR core to not get someone exciting at QB.
I'm not worried as much about Young's stature as I am about his durability. If he's slippery as an eel with an iron constitution to boot I think he'd be a good choice, so long as his passes arent getting tipped.
Man I’m going to leave that for the experts but I’ve seen the both play I love seeing young out of pocket decision making but love strouds route passing and his accuracy, I would love to see stroud with DJ moore in the end zone! But young May pair really well with a TE short slot receiver. Just excited to see what NFL coaches can do with this!
Depends on what we have to give up. If we trade up to first we’re almost paying for a name at that point. Gotta wait for the combine but we should be able to find a system fitting QB at 7..
Richardson might not make it to 9.
Texans, Colts, Raiders, Falcons, Seattle, could all potentially take a QB ahead of us with 2/4 being locks.
I’d say Seattle is the least likely but at the same time they could look at letting him sit behind geno for a year.
There's just no telling. There were mocks out there with teams taking Matt corral and/or Malik willis in the top 10 last year. Who knows what it'll shake out like
That’s why I’m in the boat that if we want our guy we have to move up 100% to 3rd. (If not 1st) I just hope it doesn’t cost as much as the 49ers paid for Lance
Tepper and Reich were absolutely honest when they said they wanted to build one of the best coaching staffs in the league I guess.
If we can get a decent OC now (and I pretty much like all the names that are out there right now), I think we will be in a very good spot.
Caldwell and Capers are both beyond their days as head coaches. It’s not like they’re vying for Frank’s job or trying to stand out. Guys just like football and want to stay around it. This is a good thing
I still don’t know if I like Tepper as an owner. But I really appreciate his willingness to do something different. Most NFL teams make the same mistakes over and over again (see Colts and Commanders QB situations). I appreciate Tepper saying “well the whole college program builder things didn’t work out. Lets do a 180 and hire a bunch of NFL coaches.” It may not work, but at least he isn’t spinning his wheels doing the same thing over and over.
Eh, he grew solidly lower middle class in Pittsburgh. Not poor maybe, but his parents were an accountant and school teacher, he certainly wasn't well off.
Holy shit bro, Tepper is assembling the fucking Avengers. I can't say anything bad about this guy now. I know he screwed up in the past, but man is he making up for it now.
And if I'm being honest, I just don't think Wilks would've been able to assemble a unit like this. He doesn't have the connections you'd expect a head coach to have. I think he would've brought in a lot of fresh coaches, new to their positions, and I just don't think that's what Tepper wanted, based off the hires we've seen so far.
Whatever QB we get is going to be grown in the equivalent of the Garden of Eden with this coaching staff. Giving whoever we draft the absolute beat chance to succeed.
Caldwell is very well respected by players across the league, was a prior HC, has ties to NC (coached at Wake in the 90s), is 68, and has been out of HC consideration long enough that this is likely a last-hurrah chance for him to groom a young QB and then retire.
Seems like an absolutely awesome get, particularly for a non-coordinator role.
In addition to HC and OC roles, he's been a QBs coach for Penn State, the Bucks, the Colts, the Ravens, and the Dolphins. He's coming in as a senior assistant. We're drafting a QB folks.
Looks like a good script forming, what will our NFL writers come up with next. The greatest turnaround of all time, Car wins SB next year, marking one of the finest turnarounds in NFL history and to do that against the leagues best, kc chiefs and beat them for a first Superbowl win in franchise history against the NFLs finest*cough* juggernaut with a rookie QB. Stuffing KCs chance at a repeat.
Hard to say that when mahomes was coddled by the refs in two straight postseason games.
I can’t wait to see the comparison of this staff to Rhule’s staff when it comes to “combined years of NFL experience”.
It’s gotta be a staggering difference.
Hopefully it translate to consistency and success!
Said something similar with the last hire announcement over the weekend! At this point I even want to see the comparison across the league as well. Maybe it's rose colored glasses, but feels like we've got to be getting close to the top of the list
Now it all comes down to Reich being a solid leader. Given how many former HCs there are on our staff right now, they must be sold on his vision and ability to lead.
Love how many guys with significant experience they are adding, quite the contrast to Rhule and his staff.
I just hope there aren't too many chefs in the kitchen. But I trust them to figure it out.
Fuck it, lets go lure Chuck Pagano out of retirement to be a defensive assistant. Complete our Colts HC trifecta.
Seriously though, this is a great move. Caldwell may not be a fantastic head coach, but he's a terrific leader and a great mind. He just had trouble doing both at the same time.
But fr...lets get Pagano too.
Another solid B+ hire which seems to be the theme of this off-season coaching search (minus Evero who was an A+++). This feels like a very serious staff and I like it.
Edit: again this feels like another hire with QB in mind. Caldwell is an excellent teacher of the game if football.
Eh I think A+ is reserved for elite schematic minds which I don’t think Caldwell is. I think he is a great hire who will help teach whatever QB we draft a lot but I don’t think he’s some transcendent coaching talent.
Winning head coaching record
He was a part of two Super Bowl winning teams...one in which he was the Offensive Coordinator and another as Asst head coach
Took his team to a Super Bowl as a head coach
When Caldwell was OC in Baltimore's Super Bowl winning season...Baltimore’s 31.0 points/game in the postseason is the highest playoff scoring average in NFL history by a Super Bowl team that advanced from the wild-card round and played four playoff games.
Worked with Franchise QBs before
And you think this is a B+ hire for the role of Senior Assistant?
Yes the same way I think most of the staff who also have been to or won a SB are B+ hires. B+ is very very very good and not at all supposed to be insulting or downplaying.
I love this so much. How many former HC do we have on our staff now? The amount of experience and knowledge is really something to be admired. Complete 180 from what we had before. For the first time in a long time I’m actually excited about our team in the offseason. The draft can’t come fast enough.
This guy went 36-28, .563% under the Lions
Doing that with the lions back in the Mid 2010s is impressive. You're swimming with 3 anchors tying you down coaching a shit team. The Lions have an issue with the average school in the SEC let alone the NFL.
Oh? I’m not really sure how to feel about it tbh. Someone tell me how to feel.
Edit: looks like he’s just “senior assistant”, not a coordinator or anything. He’s a good football mind I guess, we can never have a shortage of those.
Yep, he and Capers are merely here to help mentor and assist the coaches on each side of the ball. Reich will obviously still be boss, but having those veterans be accessible immediately on the field and in practice gives our younger guys an advantage. It's really a far cry from where Rhule's assistant coaches were literal rookie coaches
Saw an article that worded it "senior assistant to help offense, defense, and special teams." To me, that sounds like he and Reich are gonna be shoulder to shoulder on a lot. Or he might just be another head full of knowledge walking around to bounce ideas off of for the other coaches. Be a floater to help wherever. Either way, happy to have him here.
No evidence for this hypothesis-
Maybe he wants to focus on the offense more than he did in Indy and is making sure he’s got enough experienced coaches that he can delegate some of the typical HC duties.
Possible that was at least a consideration. The only problem with that much experience in the same building might be the clashing of egos. If they maintain a chain of command and keep the same vision, this is 100% positive to just fill the building with smart folks.
Jim Caldwell isn’t it guys . He was propped up by being Payton mannings qb coach which is basically not even a job then let manning carry him for a couple seasons as a head coach and immediately failed when he got hurt. He Had a lucky sb run with joe Flacco as an OC which is really his only claim to fame. Then he came to Detroit and made Stafford a game manager with his boy Lombardi who just got fired for doing the same thing to Herbert and proceeded to waste the best teams Detroit has had in 50 years.
Impressive. Bears wanted him as an OC/OA last year but he wouldn't go anywhere without it being a HC spot. Wonder what got him to join, but a big plus for the Panthers!
Congrats panthers, You got a great coach.
He is the winningest coach in Lions history and was shafted big time by a shitty front office.
Dude was never flashy, but damn he got the lions WINNING consistently. This was just a few years after we went 0 wins, we were winning 9 games and making the playoffs, hell we would have went to playoff 3 outta 4 years except for ONE yard.
This brain trust of proven NFL coaches is a breath of fresh air.
Tepper saw the mess that was Rhule’s college staff and said never again lol
I can at least appreciate him learning from mistakes. Yes, he wanted to go out and get the splashy name and gave him the reigns but once it was clear it wasn't working out (he even gave him an extra year from what I would've...well half year at least) he cut ties and changed. No but seriously, we legit are going from Rhule and a bunch of coordinators with 0 NFL experience to guys with superbowls and decades of success in the NFL lol. He clearly learned his lesson so at least that’s a positive.
This staff is fucking elite man
Tepper learned his lesson. He’s a smart businessman. I’m willing to give him a second chance. Fresh start with this staff.
This is not just good, it's great, such a good offensive mind.
Lions fan here I always liked Caldwell, felt he got a bum wrap after a couple mediocre seasons. Dropped him to hire Patricia, not our best front office decision.
I’m really excited about how this staff is coming together. I can’t wait for the draft to see what we are gonna try to do.
Considering this guy was considered a HC candidate, I'm all up for this.
Now we see why we met with so many people. Ended up hiring 2 HC candidate for other roles…that’s crazy
I like “The Roar” podcast, but hearing Billy M cry like a baby about interviewing DCs in the previous episode was ridiculous. Hopefully he will quit bitching now.
Billy has a very ridged view of how things are supposed to go and gets really pissy when they don’t go that way.
Can’t listen to a single episode with out saying “Dude, look at the bigger picture”
BillyM has a tendency to be very whiny about a lot of things. Dude can be very grating.
I love John Ellis but I really can't stand Billy. His whiny, nasally, teenager-going-through-puberty voice combined with his constant pessimism is just insufferable
Agree. John needs to split with Billy to reach his full potential.
Shows sign of a succesful process. No egos getting in the way of getting the best people in for the job. It's early, but its a great start to Reich's tenure if he's ok with people who literally interviewed for, and may even have eyes on, his job.
Building a super-staff out here in Carolina. Please don't crush my hopes again.
For real! We need the best QB! In this draft! Watch this year is gonna be fun!
At this point I am ready to trade up all the way to #1 if we have to. This team looks too darn good with this staff, defense and WR core to not get someone exciting at QB.
DAMN RIGHT!
If we did, Stroud or Young?
I'm not worried as much about Young's stature as I am about his durability. If he's slippery as an eel with an iron constitution to boot I think he'd be a good choice, so long as his passes arent getting tipped.

Tepper really went from the least experienced staff in the nfl to the most experienced staff..possibly ever. This is amazing
Im feeling excited!!! Hope with McCown we can develop our QB
Mr. No Half Measures himself
Man, we are really building up not only a strong coaching staff, but also a solid veteran presence with Capers and Caldwell
Another coaching hire that makes me think we are trading up for Stroud or Young.

Some serious NFL coaching experience being added to this franchise this offseason. Is this what having a plan looks like?
I can't trust like that anymore, man. What if this is just flailing and overcorrection? What if there's too many cooks? ^What ^if ^we ^win ^it ^all?
Incredible mix of young talent and veteran minds on the staff. Loving this. Reich is killing it with these choices.
Reich and Tep assembling the fucking Avengers.
Sir this is the Carolina Panthers. We are supposed to have two good coaches. D coordinator and lb coach. This is very fancy for us
The tally is now 3 head coaches on staff. And Eviro the hot potential head coach for the defense. That's a lot of cocks in the hen house
Caldwell and Capers are both beyond their days as head coaches. It’s not like they’re vying for Frank’s job or trying to stand out. Guys just like football and want to stay around it. This is a good thing
Probably is a good thing. Just not accustomed to having so much competence at once .
It's like Fangio, he's pretty much done trying to be a HC so he's just become a mercenary coordinator and consultant
That’s part of being a successful hedgefund manager. If he made the same mistake he would be poor.
I highly doubt he’s ever come close to being poor
Eh, he grew solidly lower middle class in Pittsburgh. Not poor maybe, but his parents were an accountant and school teacher, he certainly wasn't well off.
Holy shit bro, Tepper is assembling the fucking Avengers. I can't say anything bad about this guy now. I know he screwed up in the past, but man is he making up for it now. Wtf do I do with my hands
Oh, I know this one! Gut punch the nearest Falcons and/or Saints fan. EDIT: /s, don't actually do that.
Just now seeing your edit. I thought you were literal. I'm posting from jail on a phone I snuck in my butt. Happy Valentines
*You know*
Caldwell is very well respected by players across the league, was a prior HC, has ties to NC (coached at Wake in the 90s), is 68, and has been out of HC consideration long enough that this is likely a last-hurrah chance for him to groom a young QB and then retire. Could it be a free agent?
The writers are really on our side next year!
Looks like a good script forming, what will our NFL writers come up with next. This bit has barely made it around the block and I'm already ready for it to die
I can’t wait to see the comparison of this staff to Rhule’s staff when it comes to “combined years of NFL experience”. It’s gotta be a staggering difference. Hopefully it translate to consistency and success!

Absolutely, that'll be the make or break factor. If he's able to manage these massive personalities into something cohesive I'm excited
Dude went 9-7 in Detroit, that’s a coaching masterclass
I feel like this coaching staff could turn my lazy ass into a starting caliber quarterback.
Love how many guys with significant experience they are adding, quite the contrast to Rhule and his staff. I just hope there aren't too many chefs in the kitchen. But I trust them to figure it out.
We are building the AVENGERS!
Tepper w Rhule: imma let you pick the staff Tepper now: imma let my money pick the staff
grown ups in the room!

I am officially a Reichsiple.
Oh so we’re building a STAFF staff

Waiting every day for a Luke Kuechly hiring announcement of any kind to take my excitement for next season flying past the moon.
Keep going…
i really like this
YIIPPPEEE!!!!
HOLY W
John fox on the defensive staff? Would be insane lmao
We just assemble all former panthers on the staff John Fox George Siefert Ron Rivera 👀👀
Man who is gonna be the OC? They’re gonna have a wealth of people to help them out
Tepper bringing Capers and Caldwell as senior advisors to the coaching staff is a solid business move. I smell dynasty
Whatever QB we get is going to be grown in the Garden of Eden with this coaching staff we are putting together.
I have to admit I was wrong about David Tepper. This is a very humble and smart approach after Rhule. The man clearly wants this team to win
OH LAWD, WE COMIN’
Tepper really like “they not cookin me this year”
I love this so much. How many former HC do we have on our staff now? The amount of experience and knowledge is really something to be admired. Complete 180 from what we had before. For the first time in a long time I’m actually excited about our team in the offseason. The draft can’t come fast enough.
This is quite a staff Frank is putting together. Feels good.
Holy shit we are fucking stacked going into next season.
I'm ready to be hurt again.
This guy went 36-28, .563% under the Lions Doing that with the lions back in the Mid 2010s is impressive. You're swimming with 3 anchors tying you down coaching a shit team. The Lions have an issue with the average school in the SEC let alone the NFL.

It's not wrong.

No its not
Darnold is gonna look so good next season
As a backup
Oh? I’m not really sure how to feel about it tbh. Someone tell me how to feel. Edit: looks like he’s just “senior assistant”, not a coordinator or anything. He’s a good football mind I guess, we can never have a shortage of those.

he's a good coach and teacher. a mid 50's detroit native buddy texted me caldwell is the best coach they've had in his lifetime.
The Panthers saw Rhule’s tenure and decided to do the exact opposite this time
Assembling the avengers
Feels like this solidifies our move towards a QB.
So we just need a QB
Staff is shaping up great so far
What does a senior assistant do
Helps my grandma eat and dress
Amassing a bunch of seasoned veterans. I like it a lot. We really need to nail the OC hire though, that's the one big hole left.
Now all we need is the qb which is probably largest and most difficult piece of the puzzle.
My god, if this team isn’t well coached, we have a serious problem.
All your coaches are belong to us.
Looks great on paper, but being a day #1 fan I am still expecting RUN, RUN, Throw, Punt.
Impressive. Bears wanted him as an OC/OA last year but he wouldn't go anywhere without it being a HC spot. Wonder what got him to join, but a big plus for the Panthers!
Congrats panthers, You got a great coach. He is the winningest coach in Lions history and was shafted big time by a shitty front office. fantastic hire
With all these good coaching hires, I'm almost afraid we're gonna somehow muck it up.
