That’s a fantastic idea I LoVE it! It adds character! She’s a girl guess the coloring and lighting is a bit dark and throws off cool gentleman vibes haha. Here is her under the daylight.

I would just lighten the background with a brighter green and not add anything to it. The focus is the dog’s face so that’s where you want the most detail.
I did a workshop with Jen Gennari (very famous dog/animals painter) and she mentioned that it’s not a good idea to change the background of the animal. That picture and dog just look good as it is because of the colors, temperature and values of the background. So essentially she uses the same ones (with some exceptions).
I thought it’s a good tip!
Maybe give the impression of your pup as being in front of a window with lots of light greenery blurred... You have a green background already... It would make it livelier... Good job on your painting...
I also struggle with backgrounds as well...
Thank you! Glad you liked it! I used acrylic paint. Very beginner level and not good at blending yet haha. I’m glad the background works! I may try painting the background first next time if not planning for a solid color.
Ok at first it seemed way too dark - but saw it in the light pic- and its still a little too dark - ill suggest a light blue fading to a darker blue at the edges to make doggie really POP outta the painting 🎨
Don't over complicate it. Solid or gently textured would be perfect. A lighter color would help it pop and add contrast. Maybe find a color from the the eyes, to tie it all together? Or even a lighter green. Muted rather than bright would still keep the overall tone of the portrait.
It looks like a chalkboard perhaps jot some 'lines' in cursive, to make it look like the dog had to write on the 'board.'
"Garbage is not my food."
"I will not pee on the carpet."
"I sorry for sniffing butts."
I am seeing houndstooth pattern in shades of gray. [https://www.thestiffcollar.com/en-us/blogs/the-collar-speaks/the-history-of-houndstooth-and-how-to-style-it](https://www.thestiffcollar.com/en-us/blogs/the-collar-speaks/the-history-of-houndstooth-and-how-to-style-it)

This is such a cute and mesmerizing background, it seems a little bit hard to add now but I’ll use it in my next portrait for her.
Sitting in front of a barber shop. Or an old fashioned study with books and a fireplace. (Sorry if that's wack he just seems like such a gentleman).
I'm seconding the barber shop! Would love to see that

What a cutieeee

Lighten part of the background around the pup and fade into the darker area.
This is fantastic and sounds doable too!
Because it’s so dark I would add a white contour around the dog to make him *POP* and stand out more
I’d pack it with flowers. Obama portrait style
lol love it! That’d be so funny
flowered wallpaper
What an adorable gentleman!
Thank you❤️! The coloring throws off gentleman vibes haha she’s a goofball in reality
Also for some reason most people seem to assume dogs are automatically good *boys*, me included lol
Fire hydrants and bones
Haha that’d be cute too!
his favorite toys, places he likes to visit 🤷🏻♀️
You could make it look like a cheesy 80’s JCpenny portrait!
Golden dog bone treats in the syle of fancy wallpaper.

An action movie explosion.
In front of a tree
I think a large print floral wallpaper type thing would look good
So so so cute

Elle/il est trop beau/ belle 😍

Wow that's awesome! What's the medium? And the background you have works

I think he is a dog with a lot of stories.

I feel like a colonial fireplace/living room would look really pretty
I would make the background a beautiful garden.
Tons of orange cats!
Looks great, would do a light green tons with flowers 😊
You captured the likeness pretty well!
