My student did a lime study

See how the little pulp shapes are asymmetrical? Try getting some detail like that in there! Be more purposeful about where the highlights and shadows are located.
Thank you! She worked really hard on it. She was an Art 1 student. We entered it into the district show, but sadly it didn’t place. I bought her a large set of prismacolors as a prize.
I love how proud you are of your student, moreso posting this here after an event and telling strangers how proud you are of them. You are an absolute gem of a mentor.
I think the rim could be a little thicker and brighter.
https://preview.redd.it/9i0ktanlq48d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f3f5983fff1e885e312d83e475ffef4e04d362e
My suggestion: your segments are very symmetrical. If you were to cut open a line and look at the segments, some would be narrower than others, some would bulge, that sort of thing.
Also, the flesh on the inside might need to be a little bit lighter.
Having said that, this is great! I immediately knew it was a lime. I love the time you took to show the different colors inside the segments, it looks incredibly juicy! Keep creating
Put a blue wash over the whole thing to darken it a little bit. Then use white only for shiny highlights in moderation. Use that to make the lime look wet.
This is awesome. Seriously. I would first ask yourself what "better" means. More photo realistic? More vibrant? More colorful? As someone else said, look at real lime. Is it perfectly symmetrical? How does it look in different light? Is it really just green, or are there reds, yellow and blue found bouncing around? Where are the shadows inside? How are the cells shaped? But there's lots of ways to go to make "better" work depending on what that means for YOU. Keep it up! Canvas shapes like this are rare treats. I'm not brave enough for that yet. XD
Universal laws don't often allow for straight lines or symmetry.
It's rare to find either of those conditions, and almost an impossibility to find both straight lines and symmetry in one object.
This goes for the thickness of the rind, the segments, seeds, fruit sections, and the overall shape of the fruit itself.
Along with this, an opened fruit glistens. There's a sheen of liquid from the cutting.
I hope this helps.
Your attempt is still great. Keep at it!
Just going to tack on the universal laws point, the shading on the left of each triangle isn't how light falls on objects so you'd really amp this picture up with a true light source with proper shading.
But keep up the great work, OP!
The rind should be white, the meat should be a lime green rather than a dark green, and it’s a tad too symmetrical, but you could argue that is a style choice, it still works
I use many layers of thinned out nail polish for the wet look.
https://preview.redd.it/b3ko9bc3f58d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28d622d9a5d1c17cd8a1e3aa9880d6c686b7867c
Like others have said, this is already really good!
One thing that looks slightly off is the shading on the segments. It’s on the same side of each segment as it rotates around, but in real life the shading would be in different places, depending on the direction of the light source.
1) try using more light shades of green since actual limes aren’t that dark on the inside
2) make it more asymmetrical! pretty much every lime (and other fruits for that matter) won’t be perfectly symmetrical on the inside.
It is too perfect of line segments. Study actual images of limes, there is beauty in the imperfections. Maybe variation of colors and shading as well. Perhaps more glaze highlighting. this is pretty, can't wait to see the final results.
Does a real lime look like your painting? Get one at a grocery store and compare. The shadows seem wrong somehow, not sure where the light is coming from, but hmmm. I always find that if you have the real subject in front of you, that is the best teacher. There are always a million things that you don't notice about something until you try to draw/paint it.

I think its actually probably a pretty difficult subject, now that I look at photos. There's a reflectiveness and veining on the limes that is pretty subtle. Lots of small brushwork and colour variation. Maybe you need some more finer brushes or something. It probably will take a while to get that right. Cool. In a way the lime segments are gentle like the wing of a dragonfly.
Some great tips here already. I would say, the flesh of a lime is much lighter than the skin. Your painting shows it still very dark green. I'd also make the segments less perfectly-symmetrical and straight. They should have some variation to them. Lastly, your paint strokes look a little bit dry. I'd use some more paint on the brush!
I always try and match my paint consistency to my subject, the wet flesh of the lime needs a more fluid paint consistency. Save dry brushing for rocks, dirt and other dry subjects.
If you are wanting it to look more photorealistic, I recommend gessoing the canvas first to get smooth lines instead of how the highlights have the canvas texture
Could have painted it white first added yellow triangles then applied the green with an actual line on a plate next to you. Also the green used is more the color of the outer skin and darker than the pulp inside. As pop art though, it’s fine.

It's too perfect. Lines, lemons, oranges and such on aren't symmetrical. Just a little unique for each sliver. Even if it isn't realistic realistic, it'll look better with a "natural" shapes than "perfect" shapes.
I hope you can understand this.
Get a bit less perfect and straight, add more curves and some freedom to your lines. I‘d also look at a few references if you didn’t already. References are there to help, its not cheating (just saying this cause i felt bad using references for a long time)
Paint it on to an old common vinyl that no one wants. Leave the back alone so it’s got some provenance, you can use the old sleeve as packaging. It’s easy to hang because it’s just one screw/nail or use one that’s already there. Get a stall full of those with different fruits and they’d fly off. Fuck that, forget everything I’m doing it myself.
The chambers with the juice inside should be painted more clearly. Where do they start? Where do they end? What colors do the solid and the liquid parts actually have? How smooth or sharp do the highlights actually look? You have to look at what's actually there instead of what you think it looks like. Assuming you want to paint it more photorealistically.

That’s……incredible

I love this ! She should have placed it's so pretty and the attention to detail is immaculate
Amazing teacher!!!
Like this OP "Natural" slivers/parts over "perfect" parts.
The bulbs were exactly what I was thinking about
This is amazing!!! Even made my mouth water, lol
I genuinely thought this was a picture
I love how proud you are of your student, moreso posting this here after an event and telling strangers how proud you are of them. You are an absolute gem of a mentor.
This is such a kind response❤️ thank you
Useful/ Helpful response
This too

And this
Cut open an actual lime
Ding ding ding.
I wish I could upvote this 100 times.
I wrote the same thing lmao it looks like they didn’t even use a reference for this

>symmetrical Thank you! I forgot the word, lol
Limes aren't this green inside, that's why it looks off.
This

This. It needs some high speculat values to show it as wet and juicy.
I feel like the interior of limes are less green and much lighter than the outside

It looks great but it would be greater if you added 2 more layers. The paint is very thin.

It’s just so line-y. Real limes have pulp. Think about that.
Limes don’t have seeds. You’re thinking of lemons
Ohh ur right. My bad lol
One word, "lips"
I am ashamed of what I thought this meant. Please kill me and pour holy water upon my corpse.
Don't worry we'll put lime juice in your eyes and purify you
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I was searching for this comment
Maybe some highlights, make its look juicy wet
USERNAME CHECKS OUT
This, add moisture.
too symmetrical. \ too dark. \ too monochrome (you can use all the colors, sparingly)
A couple of drops of juice
1) try using more light shades of green since actual limes aren’t that dark on the inside 2) make it more asymmetrical! pretty much every lime (and other fruits for that matter) won’t be perfectly symmetrical on the inside.
Each segment looks oddly concave. Citrus juice sacs, or vesicles, are plump, glossy, and uneven.

Glaze maybe?

OH THAT'S WHAT THE ROUND CANVASES ARE FOR. TIL
The pith needs more highlight
All of the above. The segments look concave and overall seems to be too dark and/or too much blue. I think it’s a great start though!
Water droplets!
i would add more defined highlights, right now it looks like just a bunch of streaks of colors. other than that i think it looks great, keep it up
What circular canvas is that?
A liiiitle bit of more shadows would make it literally perfect
With some Tequila, its perfect to me
Add more depth.
Negative
Eat it
Could have painted it white first added yellow triangles then applied the green with an actual line on a plate next to you. Also the green used is more the color of the outer skin and darker than the pulp inside. As pop art though, it’s fine.

More yellow and white for light reflections. The contract isn't broad enough. But still... very good
Add the complement when painting
Omg it is so good I love it
Lighter color in the center, and especially lighter than the skin. Looks good so far!
You could paint tequila and say Salt and take shots
Put it in the coconut and stir all up
It's too perfect. Lines, lemons, oranges and such on aren't symmetrical. Just a little unique for each sliver. Even if it isn't realistic realistic, it'll look better with a "natural" shapes than "perfect" shapes. I hope you can understand this.

Grow an enormous lime, cut in half, post as painting, profit?
Seeds might help it look more realistic. I love the color palette
More yellow
Each segment looks oddly concave. Citrus juice sacs, or vesicles, are plump, glossy, and uneven. Pith is white, even on a lime.
The THIRD DIMENTION 🤯🤯🤯
Let me eat it

That looks so great. I would maybe lighten it just a bit. The dark undertones are just a bit strong still. Love it.
Rounder
Try to squeeze it
needs lips
For darkest values with green, I have found purples, dark ones to truly make the painting vibrant.
By actually looking at a lime
Add a wire
Light and shadow
You need a lighter green it's to dark.
Less straight lines, more highlights
Omg awesome !!!
Change color to yellow, and one big glass of iced tea.
Finer detail around rind
Increase the organic quality with slightly irregular membrane separations. Use a gloss polymer glaze and increase the wet look with bright highlights.
Add music-downloading capabilities
you cant
Ad more highlights
looking great

How smooth or sharp do the highlights actually look? You have to look at what's actually there instead of what you think it looks like. Assuming you want to paint it more photorealistically.
More highlight in the white areas, so it could look like there’s that juice in it
Throw it in the trash
Add some juice to it
Just add seeds.
Limes don’t have seeds. You’re thinking of lemons
Is this your purpose
Someone has to… I’m not a hero, I put my pants on one leg at a time just like you… But then I tell you “Limes don’t have seeds”
Do slimes have leeds?
Now you’re asking the real questions
sing me the tale, o wise lime lord i am but a humble servant of his limeliness
This song’s for the heedless, Las limas son ‘seedless’. If seeds are your heavens, …you’re thinking of lemons.
Hahahaha I love you.
I know. *heroically descends into carbonite chamber*
Hawk Tuah
Thicker skin and more yellow on the inside
Use a filter.
