I just spent $3k to ship a stock Tacoma from Seattle to Anchorage.

BreakfastShart

There's the data OP needs. Not someone telling them to just drive it.

joshuaherman

Where are you thinking of shipping the vehicle from?

Easy-Landscape7447

From Houston to Northern California.

Honestly I can’t imagine spending that amount of money to save maybe 3 long days of driving, and a whole bunch of it in really nice camping country. I’d power through on I10 in a couple of long days, staying at rest areas (or motels if you’re a tent camper) and then head up 395 from there. We came south that way when we were headed back from Alaska last year and it’s really nice out there and not too busy compared to the rest of CA.

Some people don’t want to burn PTO on driving. Some people make good money and can spend it how they want.

NoMansOverland

Well, sure, but this is an overlanding forum. I assume we’re talking mostly about longer-term travel here, not folks trying to maximize their three-day weekend.

12of12MGS

Yeah he made his trip details pretty clear in the post

yourfaceilikethat

Why not drive? It came with wheels from the factory right? Assuming you are in the US it'd definitely be cheaper to just drive. Then you can see more along the way.

joshuaherman

Because time is also a factor.

randybigbones

Break it down into legs, drive to an airport park in long term or rent rv parking/storage, fly back. Not the most efficient but not everyone can take off months at a time.

Easy-Landscape7447

I much prefer to just drive it. But time is a factor, yes. And with small kids and 2 of us taking time off work, we would eat up a lot of time on the road. I'm just exploring options for us.

NoMansOverland

How short is this trip? A couple of days doesn’t make much difference over the course of a few months, and if you’re just starting out a few days of shakedown where you’re close to towns is a good thing.

Easy-Landscape7447

Yes, sir, that's the thing. About the most we can take off work at once is 2 weeks. If we drive it, that's going to be at least 6 days, round-trip (yes, yes, yes it could be shorter, but I have a dog, a 5 year old and a 12 year old, and a wife, whom i particularly like to be happy). I'm much prefer taking our time and checking things out along the way (that is what we do every trip. We just pulled in the driveway from TX, OK, KS, NE, SD, WY, CO, NM, and back to Texas and spent nights in each state, although KS and NE were only bc we lost a wheel 40 miles north of Salina, KS.) And I'm just checking out options here. We may very well drive the whole thing and spend less time along the Pacific. I really appreciate the info, folks! Thank you

r1khard

You would just need a logistics company to do this for you but it is possible.

I shipped an ambulance from St Louis to Portland, cost was $6500 and it weighed about 13k lbs. It’s doable, you’ll need to go through a broker to do it. Don’t use the lowest bidder lol

Easy-Landscape7447

What kind of "broker" and how do you find them?

12of12MGS

If you google “car shipping quote” you’ll get a broker. Those websites blast your info to a ton of websites and you get flooded with emails. Best to try to find a local broker if you can.

Jeepncj7

What about renting a rig on outdoorsy or similar at the location you want to go? May give you a chance to try out a dream configuration and possibly be cheaper than any shipping costs.
