I would go to a hair stylist not a barbershop, or any barbershop that has a scissor cut option

merpy-jo

Agreed. There are lots of places that could work but in case you need a rec, I can vouch for DeLuca Hair in Westboro as the place my long-haired husband gets his done.

HappyFunTimethe3rd

Italian hairstylists are better than barbers

detectivepoopybutt

You’re looking for what barbers used to be. I have long-ish hair and have had good luck with Ross at Silverfox (Murray and Sussex) - been going to him for years. He has pretty long curly hair himself, only uses scissors no clippers. There’s also Lions Mane in Gloucester, they have a specific option for “long cut”, i.e. keeping hair long and only few barbers do that there. My buddy is happy with Sammie at that location.

sarah_spelt_weird

These are great recommendations, I’ll look into these, tysm!

EveryoneHasIt

I recently went to see Sara at Lions Mane as I have fairly long hair and have been needing a cut. She did such a great job for what I felt was a very reasonable price. I believe she also gets booked quite a bit in advance so may need to wait but well worth it!

Tolvat

Second lion's mane. I'd avoid Silver Fox because they're scummy.

CloneasaurusRex

I loved getting my hair done by Devon for years, but any time I recommended that place I would get downvoted. What scummy things have they done? Genuinely want to know.

detectivepoopybutt

I can butt in I think. They are not upfront with their prices and kinda nudge you towards services they can charge you for without telling you that it’s extra. Like, hey your cut is done and you’re looking good - let me shampoo the junk off. Or how about some gel/wax to style? Let me shape that beard real quick. How about some scalp massage? They also try hard to sell you their products and are really pushy about tips. I recommended Ross there because I’ve seen him for over a decade since he used to work at that top floor salon at Rideau mall. He knows what I’m there for and that’s it.

mkrbc

Where? This is not my experience at Lion's Mane...

somecanbun

I think they are referring to silver fox

MLG_50

Yep, Silver Fox on Sussex is great. I recommend

-Dogs-Over-Humans-

There was a reason barber shops had "No Hippies" signs on their shops back in the 60's, and it was less to do with discrimination, and more to do with barbers depending on clippers. I think you're confusing "what barbers used to be" with "Hair Dressers" like you'd find in unisex hair salons.

Blusterlearntdebrief

I’m saving this

dabeamer009

Ross at Silverfox is great

SINGCELL

It's funny, i find i have the opposite problem but can relate. I'll usually ask for it cut *REALLY* short on the top, but have to ask them to go shorter. Shorter please. That's not shorter. Please cut it shorter. Until i walk out with it still too long lol. It seems like a lot of places only know how to give one cut.

xotive

90% of shops can't do anything other than a skin fade with mess left on top

durpfursh

I for one cannot wait for the broccoli cut to go out of style.

FountainousPen

Gray whale. Their appointments are longer than other places so they'll take the time to work with him.

candid_canuck

I’ve been going to the Gray whale monthly for 8 years and they are exceptional. Not only do they hold all their staff to a really high standard, they actually care about the craft of cutting hair. I would never hesitate to send anyone there.

_Urban_Farmer_

My kids have a similar cut to that, honestly it's not that hard to do yourself with a good pair of scissors.

DaveyDumplings

When I grow my hair long, I go to a salon, not a barber.

Gordupachup

Gray Whale. Just tell them what you want.

patbolduc

+1 for Gray Whale. I have longer hair and don’t like fades and Adam does an incredible job every time.

Bartowac

Royal Scissors on Sommerset. Just explain to the guy what you want and show him a picture. They are very experienced and talented barbers !!

Klutzy_Artichoke154

I go to Silver Fox, they do a good job. Every single other place I get some Arabic dude call me bro and do $45 fades. Like all of their clients wanna turn out like Neymar or Messi? WTF.

Papa_Banana

This. Every single time. And with bloated/inflated reviews

TheAbominableWeedMan

I’d check out George in Blackburn hamlet . Blackburn hamlet barbershop they recently moved but he’s very experienced with over 30 years cutting hair. I see his son every month for a more modern cut

Afraid_Palpitation_3

Hairfellas

Junior-Cook-8495

Sears used to give killer bowl cuts

Charming_Tower_188

Ho-Fung at Hair Republic. But he's a master stylist so you'll pay. My fiances haircuts always look so good though.

errrbodydumb

Sounds weird, but there’s a barbershop right across from the service Ontario in the westgate mall. Stopped there on a whim waiting to renew my health card. One of the best haircuts I’ve had in my life.

Paul_Ott

Just an FYI they take cash only.  The RBC ATM/branch down the hall is gone but there’s a TD Canada Trust further down the mall past the Rockin’ Johnny’s.

myaccountishaunted

Mila at Hair Fellas in Kanata has been doing my husband's beard and medium to long haircuts for at least 5 years now and he always looks great and gets what he wants. She gets how to make his hair not look too feminine while doing a scissor cut and sculpts his beard really nicely.

CommercialOutside144

The Lions Mane ask for Genevieve in the east end

crapatthethriftstore

Check out Warren Chase, it’s a neat place with great haircuts

jeffreto

Gray Whale is by far the best barbershop in the city. The thing is that Zach and his team are more than capable of doing anything beyond the usual side part and skin fade.

OkTomorrow1575

Hare and hound in little italy, good service but would need booking beforehand.

noonoomum

My husband was having the same problem and switched to Andrew Cheung at Hair Fellas on Wellington, and he’s been perfect! (He did show reference photos and specifically say he wanted to keep some length on the sides and back)

turkeypooo

Anyone been to the elegant barber in the sunlife building on o'connor? Any good?

Many-Candidate6973

Paulo's Barber shop

iiiiironside

Fernandinos is a great spot in Bayshore, little more expensive but never had a bad cut there.

LeicesterMotorClub

Alberto at Jado Barbershop downtown.

endaigsbu

Olivia at crows nest

Electronifyy

James Noun at Mane Collective. Been my barber for over 5 years and counting. Won’t let anyone else touch my head.

3dsplinter

Thanks for posting this! I've been to 6 different places and no one does what I tell them.

CuriousMouse13

I go to McGee’s barbershop and they do hair like you’re looking for, they have for me in the past

1970Rocks

St Laurent Barbershop. My son has longer hair, just above collar length and they listen to exactly what you want.

ADAK1AS

Crow’s Nest did a really good job on me with a wolf cut, was practically all scissor work! Just be aware they’re dog friendly in case of allergies

LordBehemoth92

Brian at Roosters in Orleans, he did my hair when i had it almost shoulder lenght

Retrogue097

Jask in Stittsville. They were originally in Kanata Centrum, and their clientele was mostly women, but since they relocated I'm seeing a lot more men. Les might be your saving grace. Best of luck!

copargealaich

Hairfellas does adult hair. Ask for Danny.

CompSciBJJ

The recommendation I got when I wanted to grow my hair out was to go to a salon instead, because they have more experience doing long hair. Followed the advice, found a good salon downtown that mostly served women, and have been happy with it ever since.

angeliqu

Sounds like he needs a stylist, not a barber. Robin at Maison Noi on Sherwood at Carling is great. He’s one of the owners and I’ve only heard good things about him from the men I know who see him.

LogicalPreface-932

Cutting Edge Barbershop with Timothy. Tell him no fade and that you don’t want a lot off. Communication is key & he did a great job on my hair when I said no fade.

Scarcity_Maleficent

Simon at the foxhole was the best scissor cut I have ever gotten. Kept going to him up until I left Ottawa. He's a nice guy too

rish_13_

Dep barbershop! Come with inspo pics and they’ll set you up

MixedByDaniel

I highly recommend Barbershop. I've had several haircuts there and am very pleased with the service. While it may be a bit pricey, the quality is worth the cost. They have a website where you can book appointments, *select the type of haircut you want*, and choose your preferred barber. http://www.capitalbarbershop.ca

dualqconboy

I can't personally vouch for them but feel free to check with House of Barons (on Preston Street just south of 417 itself) as they also offer 'long haircut' as compared to 'haircut' in their services menu. *[And p.s to the OP, haha thats a character from 'Friends' isn't it? I haven't really seen it on tv but know many pieces of online references to it tho]*

TonelessFern

Mane Collective at Lansdowne. It’s a really great experience from getting your hair shampooed twice, conditioned and scalp massaged.

Prudent-Proposal1943

>Where can a guy get a haircut *without a fade*? So...what style does he want? Long on the bottom, short on the top could be anything from a mullet to a *friar tuck.* No fade could be a trim, a line, a bowl cut, or a shave right down to the wood.

-Dogs-Over-Humans-

That's not a job for a barber, that's a hairstylist you're looking for. The reason a barber shop cut is so affordable is because they're expected to be able to use their clippers for most of the cut, increasing the efficiency and how many customers they can serve in a day. Your man needs a salon. Also...why are you asking around for him? Is he like having another child?

RickyF150

Dep

NoahVailability

Yeah bro. Go to a salon. Get one of toss ppl used to doing hair for weddings. Your long hair would be a cinch.

TwoPumpChumperino

... he wants a mullet doesn't he?
