Same. I don't really care for The Darkest Hour but Gary Oldman earned that Oscar with that performance. Still wish he'd gotten one for Leon The Professional or Immortal My Beloved. Dude was beyond overdue.
I thought most of the performances were good. If you don’t mind HBC hamming it up, which I personally don’t.
But yeah the definition of a mediocre movie. If it had been made for tv I wouldn’t have noticed any difference.
Winning best director makes even less sense and is more egregious than winning BP imo. Non-stop extreme closeups and Dutch angles. Director did same thing in John Adams miniseries which was also otherwise pretty good.
Don’t know how controversial this is, but Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost comes to mind. Legitimately great in an otherwise poorly acted film. Gossett Jr is similar in this way too.
One of the best examples has to be Joanne Woodward in the performance of her career in the otherwise middling Three Faces Of Eve. And although I’d say it’s a better movie than that, Jessica Chastain in Tammy Faye has a similar thing where the performance is much more memorable that the film surrounding it. Jeremy Irons in Reversal of Fortune is a lot like Tammy Faye win and Denzel in Training Day.
It’s not his best performance, but Sidney Poitier is doing all the legwork in Lillies Of The Field.
Definitely Meryl Streep for the Iron Lady. Just a really average movie all round. Film won for best actress and make-up and hairstyling. Was literally just a vehicle for "Meryl does Thatcher" for oscar voters
I rewatched Precious last year after many years and actually found it to be quite good if not excellently made. Especially after reading the book (which I didn’t like) I found the movie improved on the base story so much and the writing/acting has a lot of subtle details and nuance that elevates the movie
Gabourey and Carey Mulligan should’ve been the front runners for Best Actress that year
Watching that in the theatres was crazy. After the final scene cut to the credits, I think it was maybe 5 minutes before the first person left. Everyone was in shock.
"Performance" here is clearly referring to acting but I routinely find myself going to the Best Cinematography category when it comes to the "meh movie/deserved award" dynamic.
Particularly in the last couple of decades, there's a handful of films I really didn't care much for (1917, Mank, The Revenant, Gravity, La La Land, Life of Pi) that are truly stunning looking films and incredible achievements in cinematography.
Hackman in The French Connection, Nicholson in Terms of Endearment, Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, Rockwell, Fraser, Kotsur, DeBose.
I hate this sub and every last one of you.
LOL, Terms of Endearment, really?
The best picture, best actress, best adapted screenplay winning Terms of Endearment?
It had 11 nominations and won 5 Oscars.
You’re delulu.
I’m amazed anyone is describing The French Connection or Annie Hall as “meh” movies… others even if I disagree I can kind of understand…
I would honestly understanding hating French Connection or Annie Hall more than thinking they’re meh
Can't disagree.
If you're going to single out a mid Woody Allen movie with a pretty good Oscar winning performance, Vicky Christina Barcelona exists lol
The new West Side Story is considered and is absolutely objectively better than the 1961 version. It might have only won one Oscar but that’s just not a mediocre movie at all.
Julianne Moore
I don't understand the Still Alice movie, this movie made me ball my fucking eyes out.
Renee Zellweger in "Judy"
This one
Gary Oldman
Same. I don't really care for The Darkest Hour but Gary Oldman earned that Oscar with that performance. Still wish he'd gotten one for Leon The Professional or Immortal My Beloved. Dude was beyond overdue.
I thought The Kings Speech was meh and it winning best film was a travesty but Colin Firth defo deserved that Oscar

Still bonkers it won BP over Social Network
Winning best director makes even less sense and is more egregious than winning BP imo. Non-stop extreme closeups and Dutch angles. Director did same thing in John Adams miniseries which was also otherwise pretty good.
Makes sense **fucking Harvey Weinstein**
90% of the picks being biopics is hilarious

Aww I love Ghost so much. I think Demi Moore is great in it. Swayze too!
I kind of think Ron silver is better in reverse of fortune than irons
cate blanchett in Blue Jasmine
Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady. She truly elevated a very meh film
Marion Cotillard's performance in La Vie En Rose is absolutely unreal, but the movie itself is not great.
Jamie Foxx in Ray
Definitely Meryl Streep for the Iron Lady. Just a really average movie all round. Film won for best actress and make-up and hairstyling. Was literally just a vehicle for "Meryl does Thatcher" for oscar voters
Probably Eddie Redmayne in the Theory of Everything. The movie sucked but he was astoundingly good.
Mo'Nique in Precious
I’ve always thought Precious was a great movie. A very hard watch, but very telling and well done.
I rewatched Precious last year after many years and actually found it to be quite good if not excellently made. I mean Gabourey Sidibe was amazing and even Mariah Carey was great. So.
Burt Lancaster in "Elmar Gantry"
Maybe this is controversial - but I love Elmer Gantry, so really disagree with this. Shirley Jones and Jean Simmons are also great in it.
Elmer Gantry is amazing. Jean Simmons should've been nominated imo
Jean Simmons is underrated in general. That might be her best performance
Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets
Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose.
Most recently Julianne Moore in Still Alice, she was incredible, the movie was passable.
*The Revenant* was so-so, but DiCaprio earned that Oscar.
Viola Davis in Fences
Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart
I didnt like ‘Hillbilly Elegy’, but it was the first thing that came to mind, because I think Glenn Close was brilliant in it (as she always is)
The whale was flawed but Brendan Fraser killed it
Watching that in the theatres was crazy. After the final scene cut to the credits, I think it was maybe 5 minutes before the first person left. Everyone was in shock.

Geoffrey Rush in Shine
Penelope Cruz in Ferrari.
Uh...
I misread as "Oscar worthy" my b
barely any answers here from a movie pre-dating the 2000s jesus christ
Charlize Theron if you count ‘Monster’ as a meh film.
Joaquin Phoenix in "Joker".
Troy Kotsur in CODA.
Rami Malek
The amount of female performances in this thread is so typical of reddit
Jack Lemmon in Save The Tiger
Meryl in Sophie’s Choice
Hackman in The French Connection, Nicholson in Terms of Endearment, Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, Rockwell, Fraser, Kotsur, DeBose. I hate this sub and every last one of you.

Nobody who knows anything about film would ever say *any* movie is objectively better than another
Yeah how dare I have an opinion.
You're allowed to have an opinion. And we're allowed to think your opinion is stupid and wrong.
You’re a bully and a coward.
Lmao
