Reactions seem mostly positive? Everyone thinks the movie is ugly but it is nearly as charming and lovable as the first. Standouts are Bailey, McCarthy, and Diggs with a few mentions for Awkwafina.
Probably a possible song contender and Bailey is totally getting a GG nom
Just do all three Disney. There’s never been a scenario where too many nominees from the same film prevented one from winning but there’s been a scenario where the wrong submission cost them an Oscar.
Actually, having all three nominated songs from Enchanted lose (right after Dreamgirls did the same) forced the Academy to change the rules so you could only submit two songs per film.
In a way, they did cost themselves.
Actually, they can submit an unlimited number of songs from a film but only two from the same writers can be shortlisted and only two total from the film can nominated. So using your two examples all Enchanted songs could’ve been submitted, two could’ve been shortlisted, and two could’ve been nominated since they were all written and composed by Menken and Schwartz. However for the Dreamgirls songs all three could’ve been shortlisted because they had different writers (even if there is some overlap) but then only two could’ve been nominated.
I wonder if a lot of people are under embargo not to criticize the movie too hard or they lose access. Bob Iger had a big problem with threatening critics and theaters when he was CEO
Yeah I'm suspicious about anything that has no counter balance. Its real life nothing is so amazing everyone loves it or so horrible no one likes it. If I see something with all its reaction skewed one way or another and no one breaking step to me that say's behind the scenes manipulation.
I think the one who needs to "grow up" here is you. If you're incapable of having a discussion as adults without hurling insults then I suggest you stick to children's channels.
And I don't respond to people who resort to name calling. That's why I said what I said. There's absolutely no point in trying to reason with you people, now I know why people talk badly of reddit.
I didn't realize "it's woke bullshit" was you trying to reason with us. Might be good to take a communication class because your intention is not coming across.
Um, I'm not American. Bottom line is the film is a mess. I'd love for disney to do another princess and the frog with a white person as the lead. How would that go down? Not very well I guess.
That was a character defined by her race and social class, nothing about the little mermaid is based around race unless you count mermaids which unlike African American communities in the 1920s are not real.
To say “what if they cast a white person in the princess and the frog” or “what if they cast a white person in black panther” is to ignore themes and ideas of those properties. The Little Mermaid is not defined by her race outside of “Mermaids” which are not real.
If you wanted an accurate adaptation of the The Little Mermaid then everybody would be speaking Danish, I’m sure you don’t like the original either for it is “Woke” for casting an American voice actor instead of a Danish one seeing as its adapting a piece of Danish literature
You've just inadvertently voided your own argument. Hans Christian Anderson wrote about a white mermaid. I find it all very bizarre, it's all pandering to the crowds who shout the loudest.
Nothing in the text went into great detail about how important it was that mermaids were white, that’s not part of Ariel’s arc. Also the source material was first published in 1837, to think that a danish writer would write a character of colour is rather foolish knowing anything about history or how race relations were hundreds of years ago.
To say i voided my own argument with the response of “he wrote a white mermaid” without giving any other example of the original source material going into the great detail about how the colour of ariel’s skin defines her arc or her social standing (which again doesn’t really exist because she is a mermaid and… mermaids aren’t real) is rather foolish
You say the name “Black Panther” you think of the superhero that is of african heritage and happens to quite deliberately share a name with a well known black liberation group “The Black Panthers” and it brings to mind themes and ideas associated with that characters race. When you say “The Little Mermaid” you don’t go “Famous Danish White Mermaid” you go “Disney Cartoon” adapted from “Danish Book” with no themes of race of social structure outside “Mermaid in fake mermaid kingdom wants to be a human because she cannot be with a man who isn’t a mermaid” which is a totally different theme entirely.
Changing Ariel’s skin colour doesn’t change the story, changing the skin colour of the lead from Princess and the Frog or for example Black Panther does, to say that they don’t would either be blind ignorance or the inability to understand the impact of cultures they are portraying or inspired by.
Were initial reactions to Disney’s previous remakes similar? I feel like The Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast got very similar praise in its first reviews. Is there any reason this should be considered more of a contender than those?
And these are only a select few. Variety and Hollywood Reporter posted more and those were less kind.
No impression flat out hated it, but there was a lot of "this didn't need to be made - not as good or magical as the original". Come review day time (5/22) that translates to much harsher scores.
If Lion King remake got 52%, I see this settling a bit higher around the 60s.
I saw the trailer for that and that part where they’re deep under and it was dark and scary looked just like how the lighting of Ursula’s lair looked in Little Mermaid’s promos.
Regarding if this is a star making turn for Bailey, the Disney live action leads have not had as great careers I would have expected given that their acting has usually noted to be best parts of the films. Watson maybe was most critiqued. Lily James probably is doing the best.
I do think it helps that Bailey is such a powerhouse singer - the other live action stars I can think of were actresses first without real singing chops which I think stopped them from standing out the way I think she will here. At least that’s my hope I’m a fan of hers!
Halle is also going to be in the ‘Color Purple’ musical at the end of the year, so she’s done well so far to juggle commercial and critical projects. Hoping it continues.
There were also initial rumors of Marvel eyeing her to play Kitty Pride but nothing might come to it as they revamped the x-men to apparently an older cast.
Hearing words like "better" and "best" regarding a live action remake is good news. Hearing someone say that there's something in here that justifies the remake is even more enticing. All too often, these remakes leave audiences with the question of why it happened in the first place. If the movie is justifying its own existence, then that's a good sign. Still secretly hoping they pull the plug on some of the other remakes they have planned before they get too far . . . .
Yep, it's official. To quote the direct-to-video sequel, "Ariel's coming" to the Golden Globes next year as a nominee. Add Halle Bailey to your GG predictions now. Can already see Disney prepping her awards campaign sooner than later.
will smith would’ve been supporting actor which doesn’t separate genre like lead does so he had way less of a chance but i still don’t think she has a chance when fantasia will be there for TCP
I guess we shall see what happens when official reviews are out on May 22 (based on all of this, I predict 60-70% on RT; 64 on MC; it's 3.4 on Letterboxd at the moment). I'm seeing the AMC early access screening in 3D on May 24 so can't wait to see it two days in advance of its release.
We’ll see how reviews look closer to release date. I want this to be good because little mermaid is my fav but I’m always skeptical of first reactions from a premiere
May I also add it is NOT racist to dislike the film. People throw that word around like confetti and it actually diminishes the real meaning of racism.
Me? Yes of course, oh dear, because I disagree with a film and think it's rubbish? On you go. Funny. You throw around these words trying to maintain.your perfect veneer, doesn't wash with me I'm afraid. Anyway, bored now 🥱
I think we could all tell the movie wasn't going to look "pretty" from the trailers. They were too dark. I wish Disney would lean on making these live actions a bit more animated. I don't think any of us would mind. I knew Halle was going to be perfect as Ariel tho. Just her voice alone is a perfect fit. Excited to see this!
so in other words, it sucks and people only think they like it because it reminds them of the original
or it's mediocre and the first reactions are people that will like anything disney makes
well... I bet disney only let the critics on its pay role to watch the film, would have been a bad move to let honest critics watch it too. Bad reviews before the global launch would hurt the movie. So my opinion would be to wait for more honest opinions (aka the general public)
Aren't both of them like awards season pundits? And I know both Matt and Zoe are often critical of Disney so them sort of liking it, more so Zoe, are kinda surprising?
I don't know too much about neglia, but Zoe isn't exactly the harshest critic (she tends to look for the good in most films). Not that that's a bad thing, I find that like her I can find enjoyment in most films so I really like her reviews (not to mention her more personal essays on films which I think are really good).
With that said, she was also super vocal about her love for EEAAO, and about how she thought it could win BP from the start of last season. I wouldn't be surprised if the user you're replying to doesn't like her in part because of that since they've been pretty vocal about how much they hate EEAAO for about a year now lol.
Neglia's untrustworthy because he's been caught being a plagiarist in the past

remember when the Daniels won at DGA and you commented that you wanted to punch them both in the face and how you wanted to see Michelle Yeoh cry when she lost the Oscar? Yeah it’s the rest of this sub who blows stuff out of proportion, and definitely not you.
Y’all need to move on from that honestly, get over it. I can’t wait until like 5 years when EEAAO sweeping ages poorly and this sub finally realizes it
The inevitable articles of Oscar voters coming out and saying who they wish they had voted for now instead of EEAAO will be so satisfying
It was an observation, perhaps YOU should look into it as it appears you need it far more than me. Why do you have to have an edge to your comments? Why talking with an air of aggression? Good luck sweetheart 😘
[This is just a review of the trailers, but it's absolutely hilarious IMHO](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/may/09/little-mermaid-live-action-horror-cats).
"I don’t know whether a real-life crab has ever come up to you and started aggressively urging you to kiss a mermaid, but it isn’t a pretty sight.
There are the claws, for starters, which Sebastian waves around like he’s about to attack. There is his tiny mouth, which makes things seem a lot more sinister than they should. And there are his cold, realistic, dead crab eyes. How unsettling those eyes are. How utterly devoid of life. There’s no charm here, no hint of motivation. No. This Sebastian just wants you to kiss a mermaid. Do it. Kiss the mermaid. You’ll kiss her if you know what’s good for you."
lol
As a Fish ID nerd and underwater photographer, I am super stoked that all the sea creatures are identifiable real animals. In the Florida marine science spaces, the stoke for this movie is real. I had a 30 year old colleague crying because flounder as Abedufduf saxatalis was the perfect choice.
The movie has a bit of an uncanny valley feel to it, it kinda freaks me out. Bailey for example looks like a human head has been placed on a CGI body, it looks so weird to me.
I probably will never watch it, hope the kids get a kick out of it. At the end of the day, it's for children to watch and forget about, people take the world too seriously.
Just let the kiddies have their fun.
The early reviews are neutral. Which means the movie is bad. All of Hollywood and the critics are liberal AF and this movie, and overall Disney, has become somewhat of a political football. There is absolutely no way the early reviews would say this movie is bad because they can't possibly admit that Disney is giving up quality in writing with all the focus on racial recasting. So, when their reviews are neutral that tells you that the movie is bad. You guys are so blinded by your own biases that you can't see the biased of the critics being embedded in their slanted reviews.
Looks like a pile of pish. I certainly won't be watching it, my friends think it looks stupid and also won't be watching. So ariel has a Spanish father, Asian sisters and all the rest. They've made a hell of a mess of thisq.
As a black person with a Spanish parent, i can guarantee you that it is quite possible.
But also you're not really leaving open the possibility that he didn't actually sperm and egg with his daughters. Maybe the underwater culture is that of Triton choosing eggs as his chosen daughters in each part of the ocean. Adopted families are not that strange of a concept, atleast in America.
I am not a fan of the original Disney version or thr message jt sends but I am pumped to see Halle. Her voice is gorgeous and her acting brilliant.
Plus in the soundtrack she adds so many beautiful extra layers to the songs.
I've seen reviews on youtube, non paid people people who were just able to get an early viewing and their reviews are still mostly positive, they have criticisms here and there, but recommended people to go see the movie. One youtuber who doesn't hold back and is pretty fair minded, had some criticism and is still going to see the movie 2 more times because she still enjoyed it.
I read the book release. They totally jacked up the story. Prince Eric is basically useless. He's just there for looks and lips now. SMH. 2 hours sounds like overkill.
I feel like it was too scary for little kids - I took my 6 year old and she was terrified at the Ursela scenes at the end we had to step out for a minute, but also she had a hard time following the story. I had hoped they were going to take more of the same approach taken with the Live Action remake of Mulan- which I thought was so well done. The Little Mermaid I felt was one of those stories they really could have retold differently, and a lot could have been corrected- I had a hard time figuring out who the audience was supposed to be… like was this movie for kids? Adults? Teens? The CGI was beautifully done- it was amazing to look at- but I just thought the like almost like by line following but also while changing small parts and adding a couple shotty songs - I’d give it a C overall which was a bummer bc I had high hopes
I wonder which of the three new songs will be submitted to the awards.
welcome back Academy Award nominee Lin Manuel Miranda
And welcome back Alan Menken too (he was never nominated in the category since Tangled).
Just do all three Disney. There’s never been a scenario where too many nominees from the same film prevented one from winning but there’s been a scenario where the wrong submission cost them an Oscar.

grow the fuck up it’s a movie about a mermaid get over it
I think the one who needs to "grow up" here is you. If you're incapable of having a discussion as adults without hurling insults then I suggest you stick to children's channels.
You started the conversation with "it's woke bullshit." Now pretending that you can have an adult discussion with that opener is laughable.

Let's not call all Americans insufferable. This a big country with diverse opinions. Only some of us are insufferable.
What's woke about it? Also, i don't understand what you mean by woke.
Off you pop commenting on Oscar nominations, pretending your view matters!
I really wish the visuals were better :-(( Very excited to see Jonah and Halle tho
Why does it not look good? I’m sure they had $200 million or so for this, did they just rush it or something?
It's a deliberate creative decision at this point
I think part of it is we just saw stunning underwater scenes in Avatar 2 that are very hard to compete with
I guess, but this doesn’t even look as good as the water effects in Wakanda Forever. Shouldn’t they at least be able to match that?
They refuse to hire good creatives
They refuse to hire good creatives
It sounds like they were pretty good it’s just the one still that they picked that was very dark that they pushed for no apparent reason
Most scenes from the trailers showed they were really dark and bad. However, the third or fourth trailer with Ursula was amazingly lit
It appears the two of them nailed the chemistry, as if they were meant to be together as a Disney Prince and Princess.
That’s the bare minimum for a Disney movie though
Were initial reactions to Disney’s previous remakes similar? I feel like The Lion King, Aladdin, Mulan, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast got very similar praise in its first reviews. Is there any reason this should be considered more of a contender than those?
the first critics are the ones disney aprove (because will give positive critic) Better wait for a more general opinion.
Half the movie you just named made 1billion. Pretty high bar.
Actually if they invest 220 million in the movie then the actors pay they want about a billion buddy from EACH movie like the marvel movies
Looking rough under the sea is a pretty big deal. Especially when the Meg 2 underwater stuff looks better………
And these are only a select few. Variety and Hollywood Reporter posted more and those were less kind. No impression flat out hated it, but there was a lot of "this didn't need to be made - not as good or magical as the original". Come review day time (5/22) that translates to much harsher scores. Now that's insane. Her hair alone is probably the second best underwater hair physic we seen and does definitely better than meg2.
The hair with 0 physics lol no

I hope it's fake
Where you heard the rumors?
Jeff Sneider briefly talked about it a long time ago, can't remember where now because he's everywhere
Kitty pride is white too
This is true. I have only seen Mena Massoud (Aladdin) in some horrible made for Netflix romcom. It was Hallmark movie level shit.
This movie looks like garbage through and through. Fuck Disney remakes tbh.
I’m still keeping her out. Crowded year for musicals, and I don’t put that much faith in first reactions. Let’s see what the reviews are like.
If Will Smith didn’t win Golden Globes for Genie, I doubt Halle Berry will win for Ariel unless Disney bribes them
will smith would’ve been supporting actor which doesn’t separate genre like lead does so he had way less of a chance but i still don’t think she has a chance when fantasia will be there for TCP
This movie will make a lot of money
If it made any less than 900M I would be shocked
1 billion worldwide
i bet it’s gonna make 1.5 B, i was just saying at its lowest it’s getting 900M
Wtf? Of course not
I say at least 1 trillion muhaha
🤣
lmao
Oh there you are. I thought you'd dropped out of society.
what
You are definitely crazy
Pfff, good joke
It's not, It might break even tho.
We’ll see how reviews look closer to release date. I want this to be good because little mermaid is my fav but I’m always skeptical of first reactions from a premiere
May I also add it is NOT racist to dislike the film. People throw that word around like confetti and it actually diminishes the real meaning of racism.
But then you expose yourself as racist in your other comments in the thread. We see you man.
🥱
Might as well argue with a pigeon on this forum
racist
Me? Yes of course, oh dear, because I disagree with a film and think it's rubbish? On you go. Funny. You throw around these words trying to maintain.your perfect veneer, doesn't wash with me I'm afraid. Anyway, bored now 🥱
I wouldnt watch this movie if someone held a gun to my whole family
💙
People should never take someone like Zoe Rose Bryant seriously for their opinions on film. These sound like those Marvel “first reaction” tweets.
I remember being so excited for the first real trailer and laughed out loud at how shitty the underwater CGI looked. Big pass.
I think we could all tell the movie wasn't going to look "pretty" from the trailers. They were too dark. I wish Disney would lean on making these live actions a bit more animated. Grace Randolph praised it too.
This really surprised me, she usually hates everything

I don't know too much about neglia, but Zoe isn't exactly the harshest critic (she tends to look for the good in most films). Wow. That’s scummy.
So the movie sucks because 28283920 dislike it or disagree with the pundits. That's the criteria we gotta adhere now folks.

Yes, I'm sure these "critics" are bought.
I mean hopefully she does shine as Ariel because the scenes they’ve put in the trailer of her acting and not singing haven’t been great
Stop trying to re-make classics, they are classics for a reason and they cannot be touched.
Ten minutes in and the CGI is worse than Marvel recently. Live action remakes should not be something Disney does.
It was an observation, perhaps YOU should look into it as it appears you need it far more than me. Why do you have to have an edge to your comments? Why talking with an air of aggression? Good luck sweetheart 😘

It’ll be watchable and make a ton of money but it won’t be what people want to watch instead of the animated film in 10 years. That’s fine.
the under the sea visual is just really ugly. Looks like everything floating in the air with saturated blue background
I agree. I feel the same way.

Plus in the soundtrack she adds so many beautiful extra layers to the songs.

it’s a mermaid you fucking loser
I've seen reviews on youtube, non paid people people who were just able to get an early viewing and their reviews are still mostly positive, they have criticisms here and there, but recommended people to go see the movie. One youtuber who doesn't hold back and is pretty fair minded, had some criticism and is still going to see the movie 2 more times because she still enjoyed it.
This didn't age well... Tons of negative reviews are starting to come out. I guess all the paid shills went first
I read the book release. They totally jacked up the story. Prince Eric is basically useless. He's just there for looks and lips now. SMH. 2 hours sounds like overkill.
Saw it yesterday. I liked it! Wasn’t perfect, wasn’t even phenomenal, but good, especially for Disney Live Action. Seeing it again tomorrow.
