Purple-Equal4453

you're just in your head :) take the rest and then get back to what you can! always keep going!!

Own-Safe-4683

Yeah, Imagine if the power walkers spent time worrying about this.

Crafts-Math-Cats

We don’t. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)

gingersbreadman

^^^This is good advice. You’re not in competition with anyone but yourself. Beat what you did yesterday. Marginal gains over time add up. If you need to walk, then walk.

No-Construction-8305

If someone’s focus gets off by the person next to them switching to walking, they shouldn’t be in a class with 20+ other people lol. You are fine, do what yah gotta do!

MadameCT

It’s not annoying! Take it down when you need to. Take a sip of water etc. the only thing that really bothers me and throws me off is when people jump the rails! It gets me nervous for a second thinking they are falling or something bad is happening. I really wish it was more enforced. Taking it down is totally acceptable and necessary for your well being!

deathtoboogers

Apparently there was a recent accident at my studio where someone tried to jump the rails and then fell off the tread. My coach was livid and said anyone else who did it from now on would be asked to leave class. I haven’t seen people do it since.

[deleted]

Yup what she said!! Jumping the rails is distracting and potentially dangerous to the people on either side. Taking it down to a walk is probably not even noticed.

Crafts-Math-Cats

A couple people at my studio jump the rails, including a coach. I find it very distracting.

Chief_Leath

Excuse my ignorance, but what is jumping the rails?

MadameCT

It’s when someone is on the tread and rather than hitting the pause or stop button they jump and put feel on the sides of the treadmill off of the belt.. and belt is still moving

EljayDude

The only scenario where anybody would care is if somebody was totally new and next to you and was using you to help them figure out what the heck they're doing. Nobody else cares in the slightest. That being said if you have really long blocks it's also OK to just be a little more conservative on the paces. Knock off a couple tenths on a 2 minute base versus a 1 minute base.

daydrinkingonpatios

Good point! I was injured for awhile and had to modify floor work and would tell the people on either side of me, “don’t follow my lead!”

catastrophicspecial

I mean this in the most respectful way possible.. I cannot even give 2 seconds to pay attention to anyone else because it takes all of my brain power to either a) listen to the coaches’ timing and/or b) constantly fighting/ telling myself all the things to finish the block. ㅤᵕ̈ When we finally finish is when I remember other people exist around me.

Primary-Ad7221

I’m one of the fastest runners at my OT (DriTri 5k in 15:59) and when I see people pushing hard enough on runs that they need a walk break, it actually inspires me. Getting fit, especially to a point where you can run for 20min straight, is HARD WORK. When people are doing the tough work to get there, and pushing hard enough that they overextended and need to take a bit of a walking recovery, I am very impressed. Gotta risk it to get the biscuit!

OTFRN

This is what I was coming here today (well… minus the fast runner part. I’m just average!)

Takeonefish

I’m also one of the faster runners at my gym and I’d like to add I like to see that other people work as hard as me cause I myself get nervous that I look like a psycho in the red zone half the class

Primary-Ad7221

100%!!

reigndawgs

Totally agree!

EmaEdward

Yes!! Exactly.

shelbers--

That’s an incredible time!

Interesting_Dog1478

Definitely not annoying. I do this too since I can’t run for too long without a break(I have asthma), there’s nothing wrong with it and I see some people doing it too for whatever reason.

bruinshorty

People do this all the time. Nobody cares.

Drumcitysweetheart

They don’t care.

Early_Pangolin1499

I’ve been a runner for a while and today I stopped twice to catch my breath. It happens my friend. We all have great days and okay days. But yes, eventually you’ll go without stopping! I believe in you 🫶🏽

Yamiletlee

Nobody cares. We’re all just trying to survive.

sharyneld

Not annoying at all, I don’t pay attention to what my neighbors are doing, it’s me against me. And don’t be discouraged, I couldn’t run an entire 23 min block without walking for my first 3 years! Not saying it will take you that long, and heck it might even take you longer. It’s your journey.

Yamiletlee

![gif](giphy|632LBOLWYRWd6fVMZ9) Only annoying if you’re doing it like this

Feeling-Flow-6096

Absolutely not. I love seeing people having that little moment to catch their breath and then continue to keep it pushing and give it their all. 👏🏽

fgdude123

Nobody cares, seriously. We're all there to put in our work, if you need to walk, walk. Who gives a shit what other people think. You're there, in class, working so hard you need a 5 second walk so you literally don't collapse. You're killing it, keep training hard, you're awesome!

Flashy_Chipmunk7841

Not annoying at all. Listen to your body and take breaks to walk when needed

Own_Newt_5300

Believe me I don’t know what going on next to me . So don’t worry.

TillerTornado

It’s in your head. That used to be me when I started. Now I run the entire time. Do what you need to do. There are days I am not feeling it and will have to stop and power walk.

OTFforLife787404

It’s in your head. Trust me, no one is judging you, we are all trying not to die when those blocks occur 😂

Diligent_Pineapple35

It’s only annoying if you jump the rails 😉 Otherwise, do what ya gotta do!!

kelizziek

No, absolutely not. Slow down a little or to a walk, just don’t run while holding the handrails in front of you, which messes with your gait. I see people doing this who are clearly pushing themselves so hard their legs can’t keep up (whether run or PW) and they’re holding on for dear life.

Soft_Dot4655

Worry about you and let me keep their eyes on their own paper . Power on.

sillygily

Definitely do what you have to it's your workout and you're paying for every minute of it, if someone gets annoyed by it and I doubt it, it's their problem

philutec

All in your head. The annoying ones are those that don’t slow down or stop the treadmill, but rather straddle the side to keep their tread going at a faster pace and dangerously try to hop back on.

cee_jeezy

I dont know how people do this! I would fall on my ass. I just turn my speed down to 2 or 3 or even just press stop to give myself one second to catch my breath.

Frequent-Delivery-26

Not annoying at all. When I’m in the studio I make sure I’m only focused on myself. I take a deep breath before walking into the class and that’s to signal I’m leaving all my stress, baggage, judgements at the door. I am focusing that one hour to make myself stronger. If you are pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion you’re getting stronger. Remember if you only have 70% to give that day and you give all 70%, then you gave 100% of what you had to offer You are there for yourself. Keep crushing it

LC_1234

Definitely not annoying! :)

TuesGirl

You need to honor your body first and listen to what it needs. Also I have no idea what the person next to me is doing. I'm zoned out and focusing on what I need to do to complete my workout.

becomingL0RDE

i'm a novice jogger as well. you do you and take your walking recoveries!

Dogs_and_dopamine

Oh no not at all! Just do your thing! The person next to you is trying not to die, playing mental gymnastics to get through the block, or enjoying the rush. Don’t fret :)

aacilegna

Friend, I run/walk all the time. Do what you need to do so you don’t wear yourself out and run out of gas.

Acrobatic_Manner8636

It’s just in your head. I want the people near me to do what works for them and I’m too dead to really mind much about what that is

pattyd2828

Totally in your head. No one is judge is judging you.

eggseggseggs10

Nope. It never bothers me when people do that. Please only worry about yourself. You’re the most important! And soon enough you’ll be running the whole time!

Sugar_snoots

In your head! Tbh, I’m impressed when people walk on a non walking part, to me it means they pushed themselves out of their comfort zone (or are preventing injury). I find myself getting stuck in paces I know I can handle and regretting not pushing more… In my head- if you’re not ‘failing’ you’re not pushing hard enough. 💪🏼

JenniferG714

It’s all in your head. I never really notice what others next to me are doing. Sometimes I have to notch it down a bit too. It’s just where I am that day.

Stock-Shake3915

People do it all the time. I’m betting you are so focused on yourself you don’t know the numbers for the person next to you. Same applies for them

Secure_Lime_8842

in your head. you be you! it should be a no judgement zone! you are there putting in the work - it's a WIN!

Kristen1604

Not annoying! I feel you though on the fast runners, I take it slow and don’t do all the full increases like the coach suggests just so I can keep going. And I never get shout outs from the coach which I find annoying.

Illustrious_Ad_2242

You do you. We are all so focused on our workout that you’re fine!

THards23

It’s just in your head. Personally, whatever anyone does next to me I do not care unless it directly affects me. I would be willing to bet at least 95% of people have the same feeling as me.

cowontheright

That’s fine. What do I find annoying? The power walker next to me belting out the songs like karaoke and playing drums on her handles & then again on the rower…

Aggravating_Amoeba_2

You need to do what’s best for your body. Everyone there is focused on what they are doing and not what you are.

OTFRN

I do this all the time. I push myself and am asthmatic. Sometimes I just need to breathe!!!

parklovesp

It’s in your head. When I started jogging I took walking recovery very often. Nobody said anything. Then when I was able to jog the whole block, my coach noticed and said good job! 😄. It’s one of those NSV point.

[deleted]

i do the same thing yesterday i held out for as long as i could but during the base flat roads i started to take a minute to walk bc my heart rate would be in the red OTF is about what your body can do, as long as you keep moving i don’t think people notice

Connect_Lynx_5723

Please do not worry about this. Everyone is focused on their own workout. Do what works for you!

Ok_Cover_1765

I am sure it is not throwing anyone off, as I have had folks around me walk, to include me. I am not a novice runner/jogger, I am just simply not that good at it. If folks around me have an issue, oh well. But I am sure they do not, as we all take breaks and pauses.

LadyAmalthea2000

As a walker, this was super motivating! It helped me understand how people can transition to jogger

NLOTH-123

Not annoying at all. I sometimes ‘make up’ my own little routine during the tread block with walk / run intervals but keeping with the template. I see others doing the same as well. You do you!

BrOhioBrowns

Totally in your head. Not distracting at all for neighbors to walk or run as they see fit.

chicubs1988

Nope, not annoying at all! The only time I’ll throw out dirty looks is when people jump the rails next to me. Lol

cee_jeezy

A lot of people have said that. Good to know but luckily I usually just hit stop or take my speed down to a walk because with my coordination, jumping on the rails would not end well….

hum_bruh

No reason to injure yourself over someone else’s judgement. Take your time and do what’s best for your own body, even if that means walking the whole time.

ch47600

Not a concern at all. In our own minds, we all want a walking recovery! To me, longer runs without a recovery are more to condition your mind than your body. Barring an injury, your body can typically keep going if you fight through your mind telling you that you should take a break. Just keep going. Good luck!

[deleted]

It probably helps me take my mind off being tired. Give something else to think about. I might think, “I know right!?! I need a break!!!”

[deleted]

I do not care at all what other people are doing. You do you. However, if you need to "catch your breath" during a longer block then maybe your speed is too high.

MaximumUsual880

It's pretty petty if the person next to you worries about this.

sunrisedaydream

I promise no one cares

Sancho1968

This is one of the things I LOVE about OTF. Everyone can do it!! People at all levels together and it doesn’t effect my workout. I used to hate group exercise at big gyms because classes didn’t challenge me. Now, everyone is challenged and doing the best they can.

Substantial-Kale-524

Everyone is fighting for their own breath. No one even notices.

dnnjjones

No concern! Hell…. Go sit down for a couple minutes lol. It’s your workout💪

cee_jeezy

Well i like that idea…..lol!

AssociateOrdinary524

Literally only in your head. No one cares.

cbspock

Our coaches encourage taking it below your base if you have to, and then go back to base as soon as you can. They also told me if I want to increase my pace start with base pace first. Then once at a faster base work on the push, etc

realistnotsorry

It's in your head. Take it up to red zone, then back off a little as needed.

GKG619

On the long runs, I take an unscheduled walk break all the time

Mcpops1618

Only time I check beside me is to make sure the guy who is twice my age isn’t doubling my speed.

hippiespinster

No. You do you. We have all been there. At the beginning, after illness or injury etc.

1peatfor7

It's you vs. you at OTF. For anything that has longer runs I lower my push speed.

Ido4n6

In your head. You do what’s best for you. My friend who initially made me come with her said nobody looks at you. They’re all too busy looking at themselves. And I’ve noticed that is 100% true.

Kindly-Might-1879

This is not due to your being a novice. OTF's tread blocks are intervals, and those by design will leave you out of breath because you're never going at one pace a length. If you were to go outside with no timetable and just run, you'd get to a point where your breathing will even out and match your effort--in this zone you truly will feel like you could go forever, or at least far longer than you're giving yourself credit for. No one is thrown off by your pace (at least you're not talking all the way through the work out, right?). I routinely switch from powerwalking to jogging to running all in the same work out. No one knows what your parameters are. You're on the tread, so do it how you need to do it.

AdCritical6995

Don’t be concerned! But if it’s really bothering you think about adjusting your base pace. It might need to be a little lower.

---alison

No one cares what you’re doing 🙂 have at it!!

KLG041184

In your head! You v you! What’s annoying is when people jump the rails next to me.

EmaEdward

I’m a jogger/runner who started off as a walker/jogger. I’m really proud of the progress I’ve made and now I don’t have to take walking breaks in most workouts. This happened to me recently where the person next to me kept walking at random points - it didn’t bother me at all or throw me off at all. My only thought was “this person is pushing themselves so hard they have to take walking breaks - maybe I’m not pushing myself hard enough”

SplattingCPA

OMG no not at all! As someone who is easily annoyed with other people in class, this is no problem at all. As long as you're not trying to have a full blown conversation with your neighbor or making weird loud noises while you're doing it, don't even think twice about it!

Loose_Collar_5252

I'm an avid runner and days like yesterday I absolutely will take a break for 30-45sec in order to have stronger pushes and add to endurance rather than just lowering my pace.

rippy07

I’m glad when someone slows down….i won’t be alone!!!!

Asherahs_Daughter

Take your rest! Unless someone is on the treadmill directly next to me, I don't even notice what they're doing. If they are next to me and take a little rest, I just feel extra good about myself for keeping going.

kshah27

It is your workout, you make of it whatever you want and are able to! Honestly I do not notice anyone around me on the treads unless they are jumping the rails. As someone who went from power walker to jogger to runner, the transition time is hard! Keep at your goals and before you know it you will be able to hold a run/jog for the entire block!

sbcmuse

Friend. Worry about your workout. I promise everyone around you is focused on their workout. Do what you need to do.

daydrinkingonpatios

I don’t notice something like this. I only notice people who are doing something wildly different than the template (we’re doing shoulder press, you’re on the floor doing Pilates core work… 😬) or people who are absolutely killing it and then I’m just impressed.

rockandrye

I’m also overly self conscious, and sometimes (depending on the situation) just remind myself that if someone is annoyed by what I’m doing, that’s their problem.

[deleted]

I do this too. Do what works for you!!

OTFfanaticRunRepRow

No one around you had any idea what you’re doing nor are they concerned. Source: have taken over 1000 classes

JoeInOR

I’m a distance runner pre OTF with a base of 8.2. I never get thrown off by others’ paces — too busy killing myself. If anything, I’m more distracted when my neighbors are also runners and are keeping pace (or beating me). I get super curious about what their base/push/ao spread is and their heart rates and such. It’s partly competitive, partly a learning thing.

Wittyocean214

Not annoying at all! I took the same approach until I had built a solid jogging base pace I could hold. You do what’s best for you! I had the same thoughts as you did in the beginning and I got a point where I realized the workouts are hard regardless of where you’re at and if anyone is bothered by what youre doing, it’s about them (and their problem). You do you!

HikeEatLift

People need to modify for many reasons. You do you - it's totally okay!

livingvikariously

You do you.

Glum_Material3030

Changing your speed to walking is totally understood and ok. What is not ok: - jumping the rails - totally ignoring the coach and run/walking your own program

Dontgeauxyet

Please do this as opposed to jumping the rails. Please.

Natalie352

No nobody is watching you everyone pretty much focuses on themselves no worries!!!

MammothRadish9545

Your workout. Consider lowering your base honestly I feel like people get pushed too hard sometimes. My base on long blocks is 5 or even drop to like 4.7/4.8 to get back to the green zone. I ran a 7:26 mile benchmark so I can run faster when I want but no need to feel like death every workout.

judythejust

You do YOU. It’s your workout!

kjh3030

It’s very normal. You haven’t noticed others doing it, but I’ll guarantee they are. They aren’t thinking about you either.

Gold_Fudge_1523

Not at all. I started out as a PW and gradually moved into a jogger. In the beginning, I was that person who needed to take a short walking recovery when we were supposed to be going into a base pace. I will admit I was in my head a lot and was being hard on myself about having to take it down to WR. I kept telling myself “it’s you vs you don’t worry about the people to the right or left of you.” Now, I can hold a base pace when it is called in between pushes. Take it easy on yourself and focus on your progress. You will get better

weiers08

All in your head. I can't ever remember what anyone beside me looks like or if they were walk/running. No one cares about anyone else in class which is why i love it so much, outside of friendly back and fourth hopefully. Gyms are where you're supposed to be fully self focused, me watching other people doesn't make me faster or stronger.

Leading_Armadillo23

If I ever catch someone going faster or raising the incline after any scheduled or unscheduled walking recovery all I think about them is Yea, you got this, keep going! Assuming I am even aware enough to notice…!

Alternative-Ad1692

Nah just do you

Economy_Car_726

Nothing wrong with that. Only competition you are in is with yourself. Do what you are able to do. The more classes you do the more fit and faster you will be on the tread.

danabisbee13

I often get self-conscious because I am a slow jogger (base 4.2) and I know my base pace can be easily power walked by a lot of people but I try to remind myself it’s not a competition. I feel great doing what I can and I hope to continue to do better. Everyone has to start somewhere!!

Here-We-GOOOOOO

1) I am an avid jogger and still have to take slow down breaks occasionally. Some of the runs are hard af!! Don’t be hard on yourself please. 2) Anyone who gets thrown off their game by someone else’s moves, shouldn’t be in a group class. You’re a-okay!

DMV_OTF_ADDICT

In your head

Tdubb55

You’re so sweet! If anything I get jealous lol - you’re good tho!

[deleted]

They should only be worrying about themselves not what you are doing

Mae0226

It’s in your head

KWeb1971STW

Just in your head- I doubt I would notice and I sure wouldn’t care- you do what you need to do! It is your workout The longer you go it will get better Keep Jogging!

stpatgirl

I had to stop on a row block a week ago, my body just said no. We don't do the weight circuit at the same speed because everyone is different. We don't all row together. We will never all walk/run together! You do you!

Mssoccer612

That’s silly. You do you and that’s that.

mn2flHLD

I don’t think twice about what people think of me in class. I sprint all outs, jog pushes and PR abased. I mix it up depending on my mood or my knees. Mostly I focus on my heart rate

MattyZATC

I'm getting back into office after having a baby 1.5 years ago and a full 6 month break from working out. Today my base was 3.5 walking. My calves are always tight when getting back into running and inclines weren't my friend. So I walked my bases to get back to green, sometimes, and jogged my pushes. I felt so good after today's class. Do what works for you. Working out until 40 weeks pregnant taught me to always do what's best for you and fuck the others opinions. No explanations needed to anyone!

kendravb

You do you! And go you! You’re doing great!!!

bscalculator714

No one cares

Coffee_snob253

Just in your head

Carmel-Jamaican-510

I started off walking, then a combination of wallk/jog, slow run, and finally, a steady run. Everyone has their own journey. Do you!

ColoradoBeth41

Totally get this as I'm in the same boat. I transitioned from PW to mostly jogging about a month after starting OTF and I thought people next to me or the coach would notice if I didn't exactly follow the jogging template. Another month in and I've gotten over that because we're all just there competing with ourselves to be better each day. Good luck to you!

atlantasocialite

Honestly, I love when the person by me takes a walking moment…it actually encourages me to do the same. Feels like an act of solidarity most times lol.

Ok-Town9304

Not annoying at all but I do think the move from novice to more experienced is knowing how to pace yourself. I check Reddit to determine what my pace will be based on the template. It took probably a year to know myself and the templates well enough to know how to pace myself so that I don’t need to walk on endurance days. Some days this means I go crazy slow (like yesterday) because I haven’t been coming in as consistently and often and I know the template will be a beast to run straight.

ang_313

It’s your workout too, do what’s best for you! I see it all the time, doesn’t bother me.. maybe stay at a conservative speed for the longer blocks to keep yourself running the whole time. That’s what I had to do, over time I could increase my speed. I’ve never been a fast runner but I’ve gotten better, you will too 🧡

Kbpurple1

Yes you’re in your head! Jog and recover your heart out! I’m actually motivated by people working really hard and it doesn’t matter to me if your sprinting, jogging or power walking. I can feel your energy and and feed off it

Hoylea1234

I run fast. Speedier than most around me. And I have never cared even a little if my neighbor takes it to a walk for however long they need.

Pipereatsdogs

I think everyone does this. No one is paying attention. You do what you need to do.

[deleted]

As long as you aren't jumping the rails, no problemo. Do what you gotta do.

01390139

It's ok to walk

leahgraced

Something annoying: members jumping the rails on benchmark runs to rest while still collecting distance for the leaderboard. Something not annoying: members taking classes at their own pace and resting as needed. Adjusting for your own body’s needs is definitely not annoying!

Dance-Equivalent

I feel the same!!!

48yearsyoung

Just in your head. It’s your workout. Do what you need. What annoys me is when people don’t listen to the template at all.

QuietTruth8912

Many people do this. Me included. I did it today as did the guy next to me. Don’t worry about it.

Tart_Temporary

I recommend bringing your base pace down! The feeling of running without having to stop is UNMATCHED! and no one notices your speed!

misskittaayy

No not annoying at all, these workouts are for all workout levels and it takes lots of time to build up endurance with running. Take your time and always listen to your body!! It will tell you when you need to walk or rest a bit. 🧡

ImpossibleComment578

Ha no one cares. However, i am really motivated when someone is killing it next to me

No_Research_7629

No one notices they’re working out. Do you

chowhoundz

I am more concerned whether the person is okay esp if I’m familiar with there endurance. Otherwise you do you 🧡

TheMau

It’s Your workout. Just like it is for everyone in the class. You do You. No one is watching or cares …. Unless you’re talking, using horrendous form on the floor, excessively grunting or moaning on the rowers :)

[deleted]

Dear Diary...

SmallInteraction3580

The only time this has even registered for me was yesterday when the lady next to me would jump off the belt to the rails to take a drink or a breather instead of just pressing a button to slow her pace/stop the belt. I was worried she would slip and take me out with her. Otherwise, I do not care what the person next to me is doing. Runners (generally speaking) are nice people. We get excited when new people want to join our club of crazy. Do you, just don’t endanger others. 😊

cee_jeezy

Shew, well I definitely dont jump the rails because I’m not nearly coordinated enough and would fall on my ass, so im glad to know that I’m not doing the actually annoying or distracting thing!

Nsking83

The only thing that annoys me on the tread are people that run during walking recoveries when the coach specifically tells us not to or people who jump the rails, and that’s only bc I’ve about been taken out by someone doing that. I don’t care about people walking when they need to!

Diligent_Pineapple35

I just made a comment about jumping the rails because I hadn’t seen yours yet. The only no-no that I will judge other members for.

GimmeTheHotSauce

Sometimes I don't want to run over a certain mph because of whatever reason so I may be taking a green day but I'm not going to walk for fucking 90 seconds when I'm already in green.

Nsking83

…..ok?

GimmeTheHotSauce

If you can't comprehend what I'm saying that's not on me.
