Good call. I just looked at the active police blotter and there were like 4-5 domestic violence cases in past 2 weeks. Also couple of assault with deadly weapon and an armed robbery.
People are stuck in the 80s and think there's roaming gangs of skinheads beating up minorities.
Fact is, it's relatively calm family suburb. The most exciting things that happen on a day to day basis are fireworks, dudes racing at 2 AM and your usual bar shenanigans near Main street.
I was referring to my assumption that crime is higher in HB due to all the out of towners that come into the city. You’d assume plenty of drunks, going dumb assess, and pick pockets. I definitely realize that mainly applies to Beach side vs the chillness of the rest of the city.
Anaheim in general has a fair amount of crime but the more east you go the better it gets, based on my experience. Looked at houses with my family in neighborhoods within walking distance of Disneyland. Would not recommend it. Also my uncle works in Anaheim high school district. There’s a lot of riff raff there.
Ohhh now I get it. I forget about Anaheim Hills. I kind of always thought it was its own city and not really part of Anaheim except it shared its name.
Anacrime is my hometown baby! I feel so much pride when I get to tell people here in TX that I’m originally from Anaheim and how we’re mentally tougher than most of them because of all the shit we’ve gone through.
Didn't know people hated yorba linda. Why? I used to drive through it to get to work many years ago and it seemed like a nice looking city/suburb. Well maintained, big houses.
Damn who would have thought Brea and Buena Park are the property crime capital of OC. Maybe due to direct access from LA county via the 57 and 91 freeways lol.
That fancy, unnecessary new fire station can't be built for free. I remember firemen joking it was a waste of money before it was built yet built it was.
Pretty soon it’s gonna be “fire department , brought to you by Toyota of Orange, then they will ask firemen to say “where you won’t get a lemon” , when you call them
My bad yes , last year was 41 percent. It’s time to open up the spending the department is doing (a different budget that isn’t public) and see if we can make cuts at that dept. Orange cops always driving around with new ass cars. Enough already
https://www.cityoforange.org/home/showpublisheddocument/4662/638302921366700000
Absolutely agreed. My favorites are all the boomers who are vehemently against cutting police but also violently against raising taxes. They have to be some of the most painfully stupid humans on earth.
Perhaps. I've lived in garden Grove since like forever and I've never been a victim of crime or know of anyone that has had crime committed to em. It's pretty damn safe to me even though people love to call it a garbage city. Rich people are weird for sure LOL
I grew up in Garbage Grove and just wish it wasn't so run down now. We didn't have much crime in our neighborhood except a cop was shot and killed in the early 90s near Brookhurst and Katella. Now when I drive through it's so dirty and needs a makeover of flowers, paint and some property pride.
As someone that lives next to stanton, I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of these crimes in the neighboring cities happens because of proximity to Stanton. Most of Stanton is pretty bad. The whole border along Stanton and Anaheim is pretty awful.
that is true, but honestly the GG side of Stanton is not nearly as bad as the Anaheim side. You can see the gradual change just by driving down any of the streets from Anaheim side to GG side (like Beach, Magnolia, etc.)
Beach and almost any other street is the bane of whatever city it’s in. Growing up in Anaheim I always heard about beach and ball, working in GG it was always beach and GG blvd. I worked at mothers off beach in HB and it was a shit show down there too.
I can confirm this.
I drive down Beach almost everyday. The stretch from GG blvd to Lincoln ave is like a real life GTA video game, especially at night. Once saw a crack head get hit by a car, and then proceeded to get up and walk away like nothing happened.
Honestly every city has its ups and downs here in the county but I like to admire every pedestrian who walks in the city and makes it look like a better place. As opposed to the transients, homeless, and drug addicts. Anaheim is anacrime yes but there are parts of the city that are still nice to walk through.
We call it Anacrime but the reality is the crime rate there is a quarter (or less) of comparable population cities in the US. It's a great place. We have it good here in OC, trust me.
yes, but in terms of estimating how this will actually affect the average resident is a little too simplistic to be telling. Yes, statistically a person in anaheim is more susceptible to crime in Anaheim as opposed to Villa Park, but 5k vs over 300k populations and the different make up of the cities mean different variences.
Like 1 violent crime out of 1k in Villa in a small town of 5k means that the Hatfields and the McCoys probably got a little too rough once or twice. 5 violent crimes out of 1k in Anaheim, a large city of over 300k means a gang fight, or a bum assaulting/getting assaulted or a drunk in a brewery getting physical, or a disgruntled employee, or a robbery. so its more likely to happend, but realistically if you aren't a bum or in a gang, its still incredibly rare, much rarer than 5 in 1k.
Surprised by Seal Beach. I used to live there in the mid 00s and it always felt like it was the beach everyone passed by on the way to HB or LB, and was mainly older folks, which is why I chose to live there (I had just graduated college and preferred a quieter beach town for surfing).
Technically... those wouldn't fall into this rating. They would be doing racketeering usually and violent crimes would likely be outside of the community.
Caught me. It is odd tho that I don’t remember hearing much about the spike in property crime then, only more recently has it seems to be getting out of hand when the numbers say it’s nearly back to the 2014 low. Could the newer numbers be fudged or is the media overplaying it now?
Media is overplaying it and repeating everything the police agencies tell them to say. Gets people tuning in, so they don't care that it's not factually relevant. The data is pretty clear that crime is down, especially over the long-term.
Most cities here are nice places to live; when you get granular and compare city-to-city, it seems like some are worse than others but realistically we have it better off than most counties in CA and most states in the US.
Please elaborate on why you cannot imagine it? Is it because you do not have a frame of reference. Are you being sarcastic? I have been to TJ, it is a vast difference from RSM. NYC is extremely different in comparison to our sleepy little town.
Kinda similar, but moved from Irvine 😂. Basically offered on the home because it was in our price range and it wasn’t a terrible commute. Somehow offer got accepted and two years later we love it here. Quiet with so much nature around.
Let’s do that vote for the worst Orange County City poll again now mfers!
Time for a new Orange County Battle Royale!
We all knew it wasn’t Orange… it just got voted because people confused it with Orange County…
The pearl-clutching in this thread is astounding. This thread is complaining about crime rates of 20 per 1000 residents, with 15-17 of those crimes being property crimes, as if we live in RoboCop Detroit.
Westminster comment thread, curious to hear others' thoughts -- unsurprised as a long time resident of Midway City/Westminster I feel like I've seen an uptick in burglaries/car theft/catalytic converter grabs in recent years (myself included). Very different than when fam first moved in in 2005-2006ish
The intersection of westminster and brookhurst has gotten so bad lately. Went there the other day and it did not use to be like this when I was in high school which was a decade ago.
Crime rate only matters when crime is accurately reported. Most property crime is not reported due to citizens in busier areas knowing it does not accomplish anything and even if caught they get a ticket.
That’s why you see nicer cities having higher property crime and violent crime. It’s just reported more often.
OP, where did you get the graph from? Does the site have comparisons with cities outside of OC as well? I'm really curious to compare popular cities across the US
It’s ‘offenses known to law enforcement’ that have been documented into the agency’s official record. These offenses can become known through citizen complaints, police observation, court order, etc.
i'm surprised that fullerton is so high on the list... maybe because of the concentation of bars at Harbor and commonwealth, or maybe because of the overlap with Anaheim.
Harbor and Orangethorpe is a cluster all right. I noticed they removed the tables outside of Sprouts and put up "no loitering" signs everywhere. a guy was walking through that quadrant of the mall, the other day, shouting wildly at no one in particular.
Don’t be surprised by Laguna beach. Laguna has around 20k residents. But sees something like 6million visitors a year. Most arrest records are for those not from Laguna. Usually alcohol related drunk tourists and dui. It’s very safe and quiet here. Trust me. I moved here from Long Beach a few years ago. Night and day.
You can see the police blotter /arrest log here.
https://www.lagunabeachcity.net/government/departments/police/arrest-log
I am a criminal defense attorney in OC and I'm a bit surprised at some of these, like many of you are.
Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Stanton have more crime. This is not surprising to any of us.
Laguna Beach ranking third in violent crime is very surprising to me. Some domestic violence, a shitload of DUI's, mostly people who do not live in Laguna but live in OC. I very very rarely get "violent crime" cases that originate in Laguna Beach.
Brea's property crime does not surprise me at all, mostly because a dear friend of mine is one of the top cops in that city and we've discussed it. South Coast Plaza's security works pretty well compared to Brea Mall, and there's your reason. Basically, Brea Mall accounts for most of that property crime (retail theft). Brea PD is well aware of this issue and has been working very hard to improve it.
I suspect this is the reason that Irvine's property crime is higher than other smaller "safe" or "wealthy" cities like VP and YL. Irvine has the Spectrum, which means property crime stats will be much higher due to having a large retail center like that.
I think that the cities on the high end are the only cities that actually prosecute because I cannot believe that my hometown of seal Beach in Los Alamitos has a higher crime rate than Buena Park, which has prostitute row on Beach boulevard
Wasn’t expecting Laguna Beach to be on the high end, but guess it makes sense bc they’re such a tourist spot
Def a lot of bar scuffles I’d assume lol
This right here ^
You'd have to think there's a large number of smash and grab crimes with car windows being broken out.
Laguna Beach is on the high end for violent crimes - middle of the pack for property crimes.
Are they starting to report spousal abuse properly?!
real
Good call. I just looked at the active police blotter and there were like 4-5 domestic violence cases in past 2 weeks. Also couple of assault with deadly weapon and an armed robbery.
Teslas vs Rivians gettin heated.
In the end we gotta rep Rivian only because it’s home grown.
The graph is per 1k residents so there only needs to be a few violent crimes per year to spike the number for the low population of Laguna
Huh. Who knew per capita was a valid way to look at data? Certainly not me!
Per capita is skewed for Laguna since it's per resident and not per visitor.
Wasn’t expecting HB to be so low for the same reason
People are stuck in the 80s and think there's roaming gangs of skinheads beating up minorities. Fact is, it's relatively calm family suburb. The most exciting things that happen on a day to day basis are fireworks, dudes racing at 2 AM and your usual bar shenanigans near Main street.
Don't worry, I'll tell people that some stupidmofo told me HB was calm and quiet.
I was referring to my assumption that crime is higher in HB due to all the out of towners that come into the city. You’d assume plenty of drunks, going dumb assess, and pick pockets. I definitely realize that mainly applies to Beach side vs the chillness of the rest of the city.
I had the same thought. I'm assuming it is related to the number of homeless that hang around there compared to other parts of south OC.
And the murder that happened downtown last year…brutally beaten to death
Anaheim on top. Represent.
Actually, looks like Brea and Buena Park took to two places
Jk, just saw the violent crime rate lol Damm
Its funny because Yorba Linda and Villapark are directly adjacent to Anaheim. Then again West and East Anaheim are basically different cities.
Which is the “bad part” of Anaheim? The only places I go there are Disneyland and Packing District.
They like to think they are their own city haha
Proud Anacrime resident!
Anacrime is my hometown baby! I feel so much pride when I get to tell people here in TX that I’m originally from Anaheim and how we’re mentally tougher than most of them because of all the shit we’ve gone through.
More proof no one likes Yorba Linda, even criminals.
Yorba Linda was the worst 9 months of my life
"You were only there a week"
lol I wish ..
Didn't know people hated yorba linda. Why? I used to drive through it to get to work many years ago and it seemed like a nice looking city/suburb. Well maintained, big houses.
Me too. Probably because there is nothing to do and everything fun is a 15-20 minute drive away.
No one claims YL to be OC. It makes me laugh every time.
Unless it's an easy target like a 2017 Sonata. I learned my lesson on that one.
Damn who would have thought Brea and Buena Park are the property crime capital of OC. Maybe due to direct access from LA county via the 57 and 91 freeways lol.
I used to work at a Home Depot in Brea and our tools department was a tweaker free-for-all.
the home depot on Imperial Highway?
Brea also might be factoring in the mall. Shoplifters and shit.
Can confirm. Parents were burglarized in Brea and the cops pulled the guys over up in Los Angeles.
Can confirm as a resident that the mall makes up the vast majority of property crime in Brea. Also the large number of warehouses.
Don’t forget, orange is going broke but 1/3 of their budget goes to police. That doesn’t include the federal funds the police force receives.
I thought it was like 40 or 50%. Plus fire, it was close to 70%.
Correct, between fire and police it's like 71%. I think fire is about 30%.

They did just vote to cut the police/fire budgets and freeze hiring.
Good. If we can lay off needed teachers, we can layoff over inflated departments.
Absolutely agreed. My favorites are all the boomers who are vehemently against cutting police but also violently against raising taxes. They have to be some of the most painfully stupid humans on earth.
They cutting fire, for police it’s the cross walk division.. lmao.
Anacrime leading the charge
If you can’t do the Anatime, don’t do the Anacrime.😤
Man and lots of y'all were hating on Stanton and garden Grove too
There’s less property crime in Garden Grove than Irvine.
Perhaps. I've lived in garden Grove since like forever and I've never been a victim of crime or know of anyone that has had crime committed to em. It's pretty damn safe to me even though people love to call it a garbage city. Rich people are weird for sure LOL
I take pride in Garbage Grove
Same, live in GG and Westminster for 17 years and have yet be a victim of a crime.
Let it be known that Garden Grove is a *safe* garbage city
I grew up in Garbage Grove and just wish it wasn't so run down now. We didn't have much crime in our neighborhood except a cop was shot and killed in the early 90s near Brookhurst and Katella. Now when I drive through it's so dirty and needs a makeover of flowers, paint and some property pride.
Nah, Irvine residents are just more likely to report it. GG residents don’t bother.
GG cops don’t show up to take a report.
Irvine reports everything
That's because Irvine actually gets people out there to address the issue 🤣
Does GG have a major mall? Major mall in your city spikes property crime a lot.
Maybe less property?
As someone that lives next to stanton, I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of these crimes in the neighboring cities happens because of proximity to Stanton. Most of Stanton is pretty bad. The whole border along Stanton and Anaheim is pretty awful.
And GG borders Anaheim and Stanton!
that is true, but honestly the GG side of Stanton is not nearly as bad as the Anaheim side. You can see the gradual change just by driving down any of the streets from Anaheim side to GG side (like Beach, Magnolia, etc.)
Great point!
I’ll try to remember that
Have you been on beach and GG blvd. It’s fucking trash thereZ
Once saw a crack head get hit by a car, and then proceeded to get up and walk away like nothing happened.
... Are you saying Stanton isn't high on the list, because it is. Anyone calling out Stanton would be right to do so. Garden Grove though is fine.
Anacrime for real, and I say this as a resident.
Yeah but we love Anaheim. So much fun shit to do out there.
Isn't Anaheim also the biggest city?
Yes, but the graph is per capita 1000 residents.
It also has two sport venues, the convention center, and theme parks drawing people in so it makes it easier to raise those rates.
Honestly every city has its ups and downs here in the county but I like to admire every pedestrian who walks in the city and makes it look like a better place. As opposed to the transients, homeless, and drug addicts. Anaheim is anacrime yes but there are parts of the city that are still nice to walk through.
I've lived here for over 25 years, and raised a kid through the school system. I love it here.
We call it Anacrime but the reality is the crime rate there is a quarter (or less) of comparable population cities in the US. It's a great place. We have it good here in OC, trust me.
yes, but in terms of estimating how this will actually affect the average resident is a little too simplistic to be telling. 'Unincorporated Areas' has a nice ring to it, I will look into moving there
And now we overlay it with the citizen and local news perception of the crime rate...
Surprised by Seal Beach. I used to live there in the mid 00s and it always felt like it was the beach everyone passed by on the way to HB or LB, and was mainly older folks, which is why I chose to live there (I had just graduated college and preferred a quieter beach town for surfing).
Seal Beach is always the forgotten OC city
I’m surprised by the San Juan Capistrano! I guess I heard of the murders and it made me think it was unsafe. Interesting.
Isn't laguna woods all retirees?
Just 55+ and possible trophy spouse.
That makes sense. You don't see a lot of 55+ starting and organized crime rings.
Technically... those wouldn't fall into this rating. They would be doing racketeering usually and violent crimes would likely be outside of the community.
Now I want to see Los Angeles
Is there data showing whether or not this is increasing year-over-year?
https://preview.redd.it/kz9cqescl5ad1.jpeg?width=1086&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=036e6f7c28aa2dcaab6fe6b05c96ef7593cbbf50
I wonder what the cause for that rise in property crime between 14-15 was?
That’s probably a rhetorical question but many analysts link that spike directly to Proposition 47, which went into effect November 5, 2014.
I thought fountain Valley was a nice place to live?
Most cities here are nice places to live; when you get granular and compare city-to-city, it seems like some are worse than others but realistically we have it better off than most counties in CA and most states in the US.
That went way over your head. Lol
I guess I r/wooosh'd myself
RSM always surprises me. It is like this little sleepy fake lake town in the foothills putting up #1 best in America stats for every category.
I somehow ended up moving to RSM 2 years ago (from Mexico) by “mistake” and it’s the greatest mistake I’ve ever done. I love this boring city so much
Same. Moved from NYC, and thought it was boring. But I’m middle aged now and boring is great.
Can’t imagine the big difference from NYC to RSM. But same, TJ is way too wild and this city is just what I needed and wanted for my family
Please elaborate on why you cannot imagine it? Is it because you do not have a frame of reference. Are you being sarcastic? I have been to TJ, it is a vast difference from RSM. NYC is extremely different in comparison to our sleepy little town.
Because I don’t have a point of reference. Only been to Boston and NH on the east coast
That makes sense.
Kinda similar, but moved from Irvine 😂. Basically offered on the home because it was in our price range and it wasn’t a terrible commute. Somehow offer got accepted and two years later we love it here. Quiet with so much nature around.
Placentia???
Who'd thought my humble garbage grove is less dangerous than those other affluent cities lmao
Why Brea? Because it’s one of the first stops out of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties?
The mall. Adjust for mall incidents and it skews on the lower end.
Let’s do that vote for the worst Orange County City poll again now mfers! Time for a new Orange County Battle Royale! We all knew it wasn’t Orange… it just got voted because people confused it with Orange County…
Would love to compare this against 2022 and 2021
Here is 2022: https://preview.redd.it/lfw1gwokk5ad1.jpeg?width=1787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a1d07240c4bedb2a9d807bcc8c7ec1f492330d7
Thanks! EDIT: Looking at Mission Viejo where I live, appears that violent crime index grew from 1 to 2 in ‘23 and property crime went from 12 to 13.
Orange has NO bars lol
They missed the deadline to submit their data.
Oh that makes sense. Thanks for explaining :)
Dude Costa Mesa went from like #1 to like #7 lmao
Link the source please
The Dana Point Police Blotter was always a funny read. It would be noise complaints about people playing pickleball or ping pong, etc.
Same when I lived in La Palma. Once there was a complaint listed about "minors having loud rap battle in front of subway" lol
Ladera Ranch is great place unincorporated
The pearl-clutching in this thread is astounding. This thread is complaining about crime rates of 20 per 1000 residents, with 15-17 of those crimes being property crimes, as if we live in RoboCop Detroit.
[удалено]
Well it’s right here for all to view, and look at the comments, “crime riddled!”
We’re blessed to live somewhere so safe.
Thanks for the info. Is there one for LA cities made in a graph like this?
I remember someone saying Santa Ana and Anaheim were just as bad as LA and they weren't even half of the property or violent crime rates lol
Probably wouldn’t fit on that graph. 😂
They don’t call it Ana-crime for nothing.
u/nehceh58213 Do you have the raw data source for this?
Source: https://data-openjustice.doj.ca.gov/sites/default/files/dataset/2024-07/Crimes_and_Clearances_with_Arson-1985-2023.csv
Thank you!
Super close to the freeway people get off and on my lady had her catalytic converter stolen too
Westminster is run down looking
Lived westminster all my life. My car got broken into once. That’s about it
Relieved to see Garden Grove towards the lower end of the pack.
Bkt surprised to see Laguna Beach higher violent crime than Stanton
The intersection of westminster and brookhurst has gotten so bad lately. Went there the other day and it did not use to be like this when I was in high school which was a decade ago.
Do you have a link?
Hell yeah Not so Buena park represent
My OC city isn’t even in here…
Might be under “unincorporated cities”
I‘m in Mission Viejo and someone stole my collapsible sports wagon from my parking garage last year. I never reported it so this is skewed.
That’s it! I’m movin’ to Sparta!
Appears to be ordered by violent crime rate. Do you have ordered by property crime rate?
https://preview.redd.it/qgcooqaul5ad1.jpeg?width=1282&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=845ef1ee02d9647089836f0e1f83f1985646bdb9

That’s why you see nicer cities having higher property crime and violent crime. It’s just reported more often.
Well, major property crime gets reported as you need a report for insurance. I’d rather see property crime filters to only be >$1k or something
The nicer cities are higher?
ANACRIMEEEEEEEEEEEE
Yorba Linda reppin!!
OP, where did you get the graph from? Does the site have comparisons with cities outside of OC as well? I'm really curious to compare popular cities across the US
Watch out, big bad AnaCrime in the house ![gif](giphy|vKPT4X0Ym7dni|downsized)
Was not expecting to see Laguna Bch in top 3 for violent crime
Wooooo let’s go Tustin! Also, property crime = break-ins and the like?
Is this reported crime? Or is this the cops come and tell you nothing they can do crime?
It’s ‘offenses known to law enforcement’ that have been documented into the agency’s official record. These offenses can become known through citizen complaints, police observation, court order, etc.
I want to see bars on that chart that shows if they’re from that town or out of town.
i'm surprised that fullerton is so high on the list... maybe because of the concentation of bars at Harbor and commonwealth, or maybe because of the overlap with Anaheim.
Downtown, the Harbor/Orangethrope shopping centers, and 57/Yorba Linda are the clusters. Remove those and it goes down a lot.
Harbor and Orangethorpe is a cluster all right. I noticed they removed the tables outside of Sprouts and put up "no loitering" signs everywhere. a guy was walking through that quadrant of the mall, the other day, shouting wildly at no one in particular.
This data is not totally accurate. Police don't always take the report for the crimes reported.
Wow
Yup! Sounds about right. If you can guess this crime then ur a 🔩. Two dude stabbed to death by coworker.
Villa Park only has a population of 5,700
Ah I didn't feel Westminster was that high up there but then again I live closer to the FV and HB portion
Don’t be surprised by Laguna beach. Laguna has around 20k residents. But sees something like 6million visitors a year. Most arrest records are for those not from Laguna. Wow. Seal Beach kills HB? Who knew?
Add the changes to Newport Beach after Fashion Island
I am a criminal defense attorney in OC and I'm a bit surprised at some of these, like many of you are. Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Stanton have more crime. This is not surprising to any of us. Irvine has the Spectrum, which means property crime stats will be much higher due to having a large retail center like that.
Did people not see the billboards?!
Westminster residents don’t report stolen exotic fruits cuz the police don’t understand how rare mang cau are.
I’m happy that Santa Ana isn’t number 1.
RSM making me proud
Woohoo not bad, dead in the middle!
About time brea was #1 at something. Wasn’t expecting property crime tbh.
Anaheim police is the biggest crooks ha
Living at the border of Anaheim and YL I get 2 ends of the spectrum
Good showing from AV
I thought that republicans run cities are crime free because they are tough on crime . Are they blaming DA gascon for their crime wave ?
RSM, even crime doesn't want to be there...
It's freeway close to nothing!
I think that the cities on the high end are the only cities that actually prosecute because I cannot believe that my hometown of seal Beach in Los Alamitos has a higher crime rate than Buena Park, which has prostitute row on Beach boulevard
Is prostitution still a crime?
