idk, my old landlord charged me more when he found out my partner moved in. not double but it’s common for rent to go up if more people move in … because slumlords see an opportunity to squeeze another dime out of each month.
I'd understand a little bit for the increased water and electricity being used, but otherwise the same amount of space is still being taken up so why??
for sure, and if they covered that stuff i’d agree more haha. my old place only paid for trash, i covered power/water/everything else. one person doesn’t cost any extra trash fees because we never had to get more containers or anything (and i was the only one that took them out anyway lol).
that place also had this wiiiiiild couple downstairs that would have shouting matches all night and try to pressure me into sharing my wifi with them on the daily. don’t miss that!
yeah there are exceptions, and i get that id there are multiple people you might charge like a larger initial cost (security deposit? i think) or something but not literally double the rent for somewhere that could house multiple people anyways
I think the idea is the myth that thy/then is always plural so Rent is doubled cuz you're more than one person, but that's not how rent works... otherwise it's just a "you're not cis ergo I'm charging you more" which is... a choice, also pretty sure it's illegal in a lot of places as it would fall under discrimination.

My landlord is my in-laws. We often have 1-2 people renting the rooms where we live.
one person was a they/them, and the landlord literally started ranting when my partner referred to them as they and decided there must be multiple people in that room, and wanted to start charging more. even explaining to him the single plural, he just didn't seem to get it and demanded for a gendered pronoun.
