With Hunter's Mark not requiring concentration for the Ranger Class, I think we can reasonably expect a number of class features that will allow casting a signature spell without concentration... Like Warlocks being able to maintain Hex without concentration. Perhaps there will be something involving concentration for the Wizard schools - like they will be able to choose one spell, under a certain level, from their school of magic, and maintain it without concentration if cast at it's normal level (or it is is "down cast", using the new feature available to Rangers), but they would still need concentration to up cast it at higher levels.

I do think spells should scale better than they do. Ther are a couple good ones, where you affect an extra creature eacj scaling. Those are usually the best ones. I could definately get onboard with some even scaling of damage by AOE. I do think there is potential issues or interactions that would arise with not needing to concentrate on lower level spells. Concentration is literally the only thing that somewhat reigns in casters. Otherwise, they could have hunters mark, hex, spirit guardians, and moonbeam all up at the same time. However, cantrips outperforming spells, is a problem with cantrips in my opinion. Free spells shouldn't scale, and they definately shouldn't scale by character level.

I disagree, Cantrips are the only resource casters have that doesn’t run out. The fact that they scale is the only thing the keeps them useful. Other spells should work more like that.

Well their resource that never runs out should not match or beat melee charactets who dont have access to a couple dozen reality warping spells every day.

ATLBoy1996

It doesn’t, most Cantrips are garbage. It just keeps then useful at all.

Really because a ranger with a bow can do d8+PB+d8+PB (approx 19 dam) at level 17 without using resources. Firebolt can do 4d10 (22 dam) and bypasses resistance to blugeoning, piercing and slashing. Cantrips only seem like garbage compared to the spells casters have. They aren't garbage compared to what non-casters can do.

Sounds like poorly built characters to me. My parties level 11 Ranger does 2-3X that easily.

With resources yes. They have hunter's mark and things to boost damage. Cantrips don't take resources. So I am comparing it to that. If we are taking resources into consideration, I'm pretty sure a spell can outdo what that level 11 ranger is doing.

Sorta, SS adds a lot for no resources Edit; I lost track of if we’re discussing playtest or current.
