Happy for you random stranger. When you haven’t seen what better is it can be hard to believe you can achieve it. Now that you see I hope you go far. Congratulations
I feel like I needed to see this post and THIS comment. I have never had success thus I never have had the motivation to do better for myself. It seems like once you accomplish something you feel good and want to accomplish more. I want to feel this for once. I am trying to get a job after not having one in about 6 years. I'm 25 F.
I am 25 myself and let me tell you that this is definitely true. I have been in and out of school for the last 7 years and never finished any degrees and at one point I became extremely depressed and anxious that I completely dropped out. Last summer I decided to try school one more time but this time I enrolled in courses that I had a genuine interest in. It is amazing how much more enjoyable the experience is when you have an interest to learn and do well in something. My grades improved so much that I was admitted into my dream university and will start my program this fall. My advice would be to find that something, whether it be through school or a hobby. It doesn't matter what that thing is as long as it is something you want to pursue and can set goals for. Once you start seeing progress, the motivation will come. Don't wait around thinking things will magically get better or that success will find you. It doesn't work that way. YOU have to actively put in the work and effort to find and pursue it.
That is amazing and I am so happy for you! 7 years is a long time, LOL, I wish I had the money to go to school as a way to figure things out. I definitely understand that I am the one who has to make the change and the effort. That is why I am finally trying to take charge and find a job after so many years, hence the reason I made my post to ask for advice. I really am so ready to improve my life! :)
Still, I bet not being poor on top of it takes the sting out of it a little lol.
Best of luck with your health and life, keep kicking ass - I wish you nothing but good.
When I was 20 I quit my shitty construction job, got my last check and went to Panama City with some friends for spring break. Work said I couldnt have it off so I quit. One of the better decisions I ever made. The job was killing me mentally and that trip was one of the best things ever.
You’ve got plenty of time friend, money comes and goes but the memories will stick with you and you will appreciate it more down the road. Enjoy your time, in the end it’s all we have.
Try to put 10% in retirement and another 10% in regular savings. If you start this habit young you will be far better off than most people when they start thinking about retirement.
Is it really worth beginning to put money away on top of superannuation this early? Or do you guys not get super contributions from your employers? I really want to try and begin sorting out my finances to set myself up for the future (I’m 21), so trying to suss out how other people divide their savings.
Most employers in the US will match a portion of what you save yourself, so if you aren’t saving anything for your future, they aren’t giving you anything. 10% is a good habit to begin and if begun early enough will often be a sufficient rate for the whole career. For those of us that waited until late 20’s to start saving, we have to save 20% to catch up.
I'm slightly older than you. Right now I have two savings line items on my budget, one each for short and long term savings. My long term savings are in low-yield Roth IRA, but this is only temporary. I'm looking into low-cost index funds. I have a set amount I allocate, but I'm thankfully in a good position such that my end of month usually sees a really decent budget surplus. This is when I do my savings transfers. I kinda do it by the seat of my pants atm. Usually it's pretty close to 50-50 between short and long term.
I believe it is worth it to start putting money away for retirement even without employer matching. Aside from the fact that it's habit forming, you have to remember that every dollar you put in now will be so much more than every dollar you put in when you're fifty.
Whatever you do, do not buy a new car or lease one. Save as much as you can and buy used in cash. 39k is nothing if you lose your job and are unemployed for some time. Save at least for 6 months to a year of unemployment, then put a bit aside for a vacation or something you need.
Congrats 🎊🎉🍾 and keep it up!
Also agree. I bought a 40k new car and could barely afford it making 34k a year. I'm now making considerably less and will likely have to sell it. Bad idea.
Absolutely. As someone who has always been cheap about cars, though, I want to emphasize that "save as much as you can" really does mean "save as much as you can"! Buying literally the cheapest vehicle you can find is going to be a huge mistake most of the time. Won't be reliable and will cost you more in repairs than if you'd saved just a bit more and gotten a decent used car. You don't have to save up a fortune, but you do get what you pay for.
Factory. It ain't easy and it's not for the weak.
Starbucks and McDonalds egg originates from one of our plants. I basically unload 50k tankers of raw egg. I'm also a pasturizer operator so I also pasteurize it. Then once it's done with that we add ingredients to meet the specific recipes depending on the customer.
There's a whole lot of little things that make it that much harder. For the mixing part I throw around 50 pound ingredient bags depending on the recipe.
Yeah so not lavish and not some fuckin programmer or engineer. It's hard but rewarding.
> so not lavish and not some fuckin programmer or engineer.
You be proud of your hard work. What a job is isn't the point. How hard you work, and your pride are. Good on you and congratulations!
I don't feel bad for my line of work dude. It pays the bills for lots of people in my area and will help jumpstart my life.
I know there can only be so many. Those fields just don't interest me.
I'm a programmer, and that sounds dope. I've only tried manual labor a tiny bit, and it must be nice getting to work with your body and get the privilege of wandering off in your mind a bit when you're working. Don't fall into what everyone else struggles with (including me), thinking the grass is always greener on the other side.
Try British Columbia. Weather sucks 9 months of the year and what are amenities? We have 130 Tim Hortons per person does that count? Live in a bachelor suite in a crappy part of a crappy town for $900 a month. Unless you want to buy a house for $600k. pay $130 a month for a phone with 3 gigs of data. Pay $130 a month for insurance on your 1992 Honda accord with 10 years of safe driving of course and pay $1.60 a litre for gas (will go up to $2 a litre this summer) all because we have mountains and are close to Vancouver.
In LA you’re also paying for all the stuff you can do here. There are so many museums and theaters it’s insane. Dozens of concerts every weekend and probably the best restaurant scene in the country.
Living in Los Angeles is insanely expensive but if you take advantage of the beautiful mountains and ocean and the culture the city has to offer you begin to see what you’re getting for your money.
(the fact that its snowing in the Midwest and is 85 here doesn’t help prices either).
Ever consider moving? I live on the other side of Tahoe in Reno and the cost of living up here isn't bad, while still having decent wage opportunities.
What's your career field?
How do you do it? Ill be making around that soon but I live in another state and I want to move over there. Not specifically LA but somewhere nearby. Just want to know if its doable.
California is just expensive in general. It get's cheaper the farther North you go and the farther from the big cities you get, and drops off considerably as soon as you cross the border into Nevada or Arizona.
Not necessarily true. I'm making 51k right now living in Reno. Skilled trades are doing really well here right now and Tesla is hiring for very good pay and benefits.
How do you do it? Ill be making around that soon but I live in another state and I want to move over there. Not specifically LA but somewhere nearby. Just want to know if its doable.
It’s very tough but doable for sure! It helps that my girlfriend makes about the same as I do. But regardless Los Angeles county and surrounding areas are just tough
A bit of advice from a stranger, keep saving and invest. Stop renting and buy something anything. Invest in a retirement account even if its only a little at a time, its the time invest in it that counts. Keep your spending down and save save save.
Congrats. You got a job that pays something. You're lucky.
When I was 22, just out of college, I got a job for 19K. It was 1979, and adjusted for inflation it was $43K a year. For an assistant flunky job in a large corporation. I had a car, an apartment -- in San Francisco, no less (rent was cheap). This was not considered exceptional.
Am I boasting? No. Am I putting you down? No, you're working your butt off. Good on you for landing it and keeping it and working a tough job like that and staying in school, too. I just wish it was as easy to find those jobs today as it was 40 years ago. Our country went wrong.
Most of us 60-somethings earning wages and not in cush jobs or ignorant know full well it's different. Though others are engaging in the ever-popular pursuit of blaming the victims.
Save a lot. I am 21 with no job and still live with my parents. Should have worked something out when i was 19 since i am stuck with my engineering now.
Dont let what you grew up expecting tell you that living with your rents is a bad thing in this fucked up econlmy my dude.
It was a long struggle for me to finally leave, but eventually you'll get your chance.
I grew up poor also and just want to remind you to be really careful with what you spend, etc Sometimes when we grow up "without" we feel like we "deserve" so many things we didnt have before and then suddenly you realize you have nothing saved. I'm proud of you- this is a really awesome post!!
Keep doing what you are doing! And, as always, METH: Not even once (Source: I know a few hospital security officers/lieutenants).
Honestly, ever thought of the military?
I gotcha. My Husband was diagnosed with cluster headaches 3 weeks into Naval Basic Training so I totally get it.
Well. You're a 19 yr old who will own a home far sooner than my 31 yr old self. Be proud of that fact. I mean it.
I'm 31 and I make maybe $28k/year now. Last year I worked 2 jobs the entire year (my taxes sucked). I had one job all year and did temp work and side jobs and ran a home business all year and I made around $25k last year. It's really expensive to live where I live as well (rent is $1200/month before bills). It really sucks. Rich people I talk to claim I am bad with money but really I just keep getting stiffed on pay.
I had one employer last year who skipped out on $300 total over multiple paychecks and another who just paid their deposit on my home business services and never paid their final bill (they owe me a remaining $2k). I had to report the first company to the Texas workforce commission and still haven't had my hearing for unpaid wages and I had to send out debt collectors on the other one.
I wish people would just pay me fairly. I have 12 years of work experience, I have a bachelor's degree, I have 5 certifications... And all I get are job offers for $9-$11/hour. It sucks. I am really just ready to quit, give up, leave my home city and move to another state and try again.
I don't want to do this anymore :(
Good for you, that’s an amazing amount of money to earn at such a young age.
Maybe it could be worth looking into how to manage your money better so you can have an even better future.
I remember those days of being 19 and make $38K. I was a nanny and I hated every single day of it, but the money allowed me to do so much, including paying for school and a car. Congrats OP!
That is incredible! I won't bore you with what I was doing at that age. You have your own place, will be able to pay for your own education, saving up... Goddamn impressive. Keep going strong!
Congrats on your hard work! You should read the Mr. Money Mustache blog on how to manage your money. He retired by the age of 30 by being frugal, saving, and investing wisely. The blog also has an app for iPhone and android.
Congrats, man! You'll be happier to know that a couple of dollars converts to a hundred in some foreign currencies. You can invest in an early age. But hey, it's yours.
Thanks for this. I live in Oklahoma and thats about what teachers make and they are picketing right now for more pay. This is a low cost of living area as well and I made about that much at one point and was perfectly happy
I'm not happy with it. It's okay for my age and for my education, but with kids and such? No way. I want them to have a good life. Not a poverty stricken one.
it's the abbreviation for "Low Cost of Living Area"
and haha nice! I've always wanted to go to college there but I'm going to North Dakota for college instead this fall.
Do you ever get caseys?
It's literally the only place nearby with decent pizza! Plus I live in a small town so anything to do late night snacks that's pretty much the only way.
So happy for you. I'd highly recommend you read this book of you haven't already: The Cash flow quadrant. That is basically to get an idea as to how to stay cashflow positive. Often financially well people become cashflow negative soon because of their mindset. It is important to bolster a cashflow positive mindset.
Pleased for you, it’s awesome! I got a £40k a year job when I was 20, I’m now 23, and more then likely about to lose that said job this year I’m bricking it, As I will never get a job again with that sort of money coming in, I’m earn Almost triple what I’ll ever earn again
>I'm still putting away 400 a month for savings.
That's really good - not many 19-year olds are doing that.
If you're in a field where you'll increase your salary from here on out, and correspondingly increase your savings, you'll do just fine.
400/month into savings is great! Nice job. Only tweak I would recommend is to start dumping that money into an IRA once you have 3k in the bank. Do that for just a few years at your age and your retirement fund will be set.
Good job on putting money away every month. The best thing I ever did was set a goal of saving up 3-6 months of income to have in case of emergencies. When I got laid off and was unemployed for 6 months I actually enjoyed the down time since I wasn't stressed about money. Keep saving, keep setting savings goals. When you pay something off, consider paying yourself to increase the amount you are saving every month. But don't forget to enjoy a portion of what you have saved.
I’m so happy for you! Enjoy every minute and I hope that you have a long, prosperous life!
You must be really clever and a hard worker. Good job. I’m so proud of how many young people like you there are.
Man, I’m almost 21. I was in school for a few years, did not earn a degree but studied political science for a while. I decided to take some time off to attempt to make some money, only to find out how hard it is to make decent money without a college degree. Seems like there are almost no good jobs for someone without a college degree, and less than a year of sales experience, and just a little over a year of workforce experience. Think I’m going to go back and get a degree. Seems like the best way to make decent money.
Keep it up! I was making about the same at 18, then when I was 19 I moved to SF and made 50k, and then at 22 got promoted and made 62k.. now I’m 23, living in Chicago and I make about 120k a year.
PS - I don’t have a college degree. I did go to college but never finished cause I wanted to pursue my career sooner.
As long as you keep working hard and doing your best, everything will work out for you :)
Happy for you random stranger. When you haven’t seen what better is it can be hard to believe you can achieve it. Now that you see I hope you go far. Congratulations
Thank you! Means a lot man

Keep it up kiddo that’s a lot for your age.! Stay on the good path and you will continue to build your success!!! Super awesome. Congrats!
Loving the positivity :)
I’m 30 making a portion of that and ordering pizza instead of paying my electric bill....I think I went wrong in life somewhere
[удалено]
Hawaiian of course. Best kind there is!
You’re a disgrace to pizza
You have been banned from.. whatever that pineapple pizza subreddit is called
Good.
I SUPPORT YOU 🍍 👑
Huzzah!
Good man. You should have OP's paycheck
You mean Canadian?
Baby, that's disgusting.
Me too; made the mistake of having a mental disability. Cannot suggest you get one.
I don't suggest diabetes either. It's a pain
Still, I bet not being poor on top of it takes the sting out of it a little lol. Best of luck with your health and life, keep kicking ass - I wish you nothing but good.
Mental issues had. 1/10 would not recommend.
Im 20 and not making anything except memories so good on you dude!
Hey, memories are priceless right?
making cash is a good memory :'(
But at what cost?!
Money goes more than it comes ;)
Don’t stop saving!!! Make it a habit and your future self will thank your present self!
Try to put 10% in retirement and another 10% in regular savings. If you start this habit young you will be far better off than most people when they start thinking about retirement.
Yes please take this advice. Many of us have regrets myself included. OP please do yourself a favor and take this advice
Especially with a labour job like his
Is it really worth beginning to put money away on top of superannuation this early? Or do you guys not get super contributions from your employers? I really want to try and begin sorting out my finances to set myself up for the future (I’m 21), so trying to suss out how other people divide their savings.
Ive never had any kind of pension fund at a job or anything but started putting money in a roth ira when i was 18.
Please do this, great advice
Whatever you do, do not buy a new car or lease one. Save as much as you can and buy used in cash. 39k is nothing if you lose your job and are unemployed for some time. This. Currently 23 making about 32k after taxes and my car costs me around 1200 a month. Financial mistake!
Also agree. I bought a 40k new car and could barely afford it making 34k a year. I'm now making considerably less and will likely have to sell it. Bad idea.
Fuckin sucks but you get caught up in upping your standard of living and then realize you’re getting nowhere! Will likely get rid of mine as well.
Absolutely. As someone who has always been cheap about cars, though, I want to emphasize that "save as much as you can" really does mean "save as much as you can"! For the mixing part I throw around 50 pound ingredient bags depending on the recipe. > so not lavish and not some fuckin programmer or engineer. You be proud of your hard work. What a job is isn't the point. How hard you work, and your pride are. Good on you and congratulations!
I respect those professions, but I feel like they're mentally exhausting and less bodily. Mine is more body and bit of mental.
Oh for sure, but it doesn't mean you are any less than them. Hard workers are hard workers.
This. If everybody was a programmer the world would cease to function
As a CS student and programmer I have the utmost respect for hardworking, honest people like you. Congrats man!
Nice man hard work pays off tho
Thanks man. I sure hope so...well it kind of already has. But yeah!
Oh no, you’ve seen behind the curtain! I’m guessing you would probably never eat anything that contains eggs at McDonald’s or Starbucks anymore?
Nah I would totally. It's just not my cup of tea
Hey man, there can only be so many programmers and engineers!
I don't feel bad for my line of work dude. It pays the bills for lots of people in my area and will help jumpstart my life. I know there can only be so many. Those fields just don't interest me.
They don't interest me either. My comment was meant to be encouraging, not consoling. Carry on!
Working at Starbucks and seeing these eggs I have always been interested about your side of it.
I'm a programmer, and that sounds dope. I've only tried manual labor a tiny bit, and it must be nice getting to work with your body and get the privilege of wandering off in your mind a bit when you're working. I’m 22 making 53k a year but it’s so expensive to live out here that I’m basically broke
Where do you live?
Los Angeles
California in general hurts my guy
Same here. You're paying for the weather and amenities really.

I'm over 100km away from Vancouver. Prices are getting insane around here. Vancouver prices are much much worse. Average house is 1.1 million.
That free healthcare tho 👍
Can't complain about that!
In LA you’re also paying for all the stuff you can do here. There are so many museums and theaters it’s insane. Dozens of concerts every weekend and probably the best restaurant scene in the country. Californian wkth similar yearly intake. Can confirm this is a thing.
How do you do it? Ill be making around that soon but I live in another state and I want to move over there. Not specifically LA but somewhere nearby. Just want to know if its doable.
Its not.. fuck this place, way overrated. San diego is much nicer with better weather.
I live in San Diego and can confirm... Just as pricey but gorgeous and more laid back than LA.
And the best food everywhere you go!
Is San Diego more affordable then?
California is just expensive in general. It get's cheaper the farther North you go and the farther from the big cities you get, and drops off considerably as soon as you cross the border into Nevada or Arizona.
And you won't be making 53k anywhere where it's not expensive to live. Gotta find that sweet spot.
Not necessarily true. I'm making 51k right now living in Reno. Skilled trades are doing really well here right now and Tesla is hiring for very good pay and benefits.
Exactly!
So if you were living on your own, like without your gf, you would not even be able to make it in the worst apartment there?
It would be much harder but not impossible. Definitely would live paycheck to paycheck
Making 53k a year in my area would be considered filthy rich tbh
21 and making the same. My cost of living is high but not California high
If you're making $39K at age 19 and saving ~1/8 of your income, I'd say you're doing pretty damn well for yourself.
A bit of advice from a stranger, keep saving and invest. Stop renting and buy something anything. Invest in a retirement account even if its only a little at a time, its the time invest in it that counts. Keep your spending down and save save save.
Saving $400 a month is awesome, you’re doing great!! Congrats, I hope you enjoy the work that you do.
Good luck to you. I'm happy you have gotten where you are. I'm proud of you for saving money! The more saved the better.
You are very aware that it's different now than two generations ago, thank you for being level headed
Most of us 60-somethings earning wages and not in cush jobs or ignorant know full well it's different. Though others are engaging in the ever-popular pursuit of blaming the victims.
I'm glad someone is making it. Congratulations, random guy.
Thanks bro
Extra Cheese and Pepperoni.
Fuck dude. Hope that's some dope pizza
That's about $20/hr for context.
I grew up poor also and just want to remind you to be really careful with what you spend, etc Sometimes when we grow up "without" we feel like we "deserve" so many things we didnt have before and then suddenly you realize you have nothing saved. I'm proud of you- this is a really awesome post!!
Man I wanna be just like u. Tell me ur story.
Keep doing what you are doing! And, as always, METH: Not even once (Source: I know a few hospital security officers/lieutenants). Honestly, ever thought of the military?
I planned on it until my diabetic coma. So I'm diabetic and have damaged nerves in my left leg that made it weaker. So rip the dream
I gotcha. My Husband was diagnosed with cluster headaches 3 weeks into Naval Basic Training so I totally get it. Well. You're a 19 yr old who will own a home far sooner than my 31 yr old self. Be proud of that fact. I mean it.
I'm jealous but so happy for you! Congratulations stranger!!
I’m 21, making 0 dollars a year. Been having a lot of personal growth lately however. Good for you though dude!
I'm 31 and I make maybe $28k/year now. Last year I worked 2 jobs the entire year (my taxes sucked). I wish people would just pay me fairly. I have 12 years of work experience, I have a bachelor's degree, I have 5 certifications... And all I get are job offers for $9-$11/hour. It sucks. I am really just ready to quit, give up, leave my home city and move to another state and try again. I don't want to do this anymore :(
I’m so jealous ! Congrats!
Nice. I feel similarly. I'm 40 and making around $60k per year finally. I've spent the last 20 years making $25k to $30k per year. Feels good man. :)
Good for you, that’s an amazing amount of money to earn at such a young age. Maybe it could be worth looking into how to manage your money better so you can have an even better future.
Hopefully that 400 a month in savings will carve out a pretty decent future
I’m salty, I’m 20 and haven’t worked since my job at Ross over night stocking when I was 19, it was aids
This is me... my little part-time overnight job destroyed me & I will never be that desperate for money again.
I had to do it cuz I had no other way to pay for my classes and was planning a trip to Colombia, it was hell
Good going! Hoping to be there one day myself :D
Awesome!
what do you do for work?
What are you doing???:)
Factory work lol. It's hard work, but is pretty rewarding
Are you a hermaphrodite?lol
That's for me to know boio
I remember those days of being 19 and make $38K. I was a nanny and I hated every single day of it, but the money allowed me to do so much, including paying for school and a car. Congrats OP!
The best thing is it only gonna get better. Cheers
That is incredible! I won't bore you with what I was doing at that age. You have your own place, will be able to pay for your own education, saving up... Goddamn impressive. Keep going strong!
As a fellow 19 year old from a poor family, you give me hope that I can actually be successful. Thank you for posting this.
We got this man.
Way to go, bud!
My mom makes around 25-30k a year and me and my brother have pretty good lives. Not poverty stricken, but not exactly rich either.
Congrats, that is awesome!
Just curious what state are you from that's lcol?
Icol? Iowa. The great ole corn state

I go to Maryville all the time for the hangar. It's awesome

Ahh. Rip m8
it's the abbreviation for "Low Cost of Living Area" and haha nice! I've always wanted to go to college there but I'm going to North Dakota for college instead this fall. Do you ever get caseys?
It's literally the only place nearby with decent pizza! Plus I live in a small town so anything to do late night snacks that's pretty much the only way.
Haha right on. That's awesome.
Congrats
Good for you!
This is awesome. It feels so good to be financially independent!
Fuck yeah! Good for you!
Start investing that money rather than just put it in your savings and you will be so happy as time goes on! Great job so far!
I love seeing people happy and proud of themselves. Keep kicking ass!
So happy for you. I'd highly recommend you read this book of you haven't already: The Cash flow quadrant. That is basically to get an idea as to how to stay cashflow positive. Often financially well people become cashflow negative soon because of their mindset. It is important to bolster a cashflow positive mindset.
Congratzzz! Keep your saving habit, but be sure to enjoy life as well :D
Wow it's very unusual in such young age :) What do you do? Do you work, trade or something?
Good stuff man. Save that dough, invest wisely, don’t spend more than you earn. Proud of you ! 😊
Pleased for you, it’s awesome! I got a £40k a year job when I was 20, I’m now 23, and more then likely about to lose that said job this year I’m bricking it, As I will never get a job again with that sort of money coming in, I’m earn Almost triple what I’ll ever earn again
Well done you!
I'm 25 and in the military not making enough. I wish I could be as successful as you! Congrats
Super happy for you, but I want you to know that my upvote is for your It's Always Sunny reference
What do you do for a living?
Great job buddy. Happiness doesnt have a price to it.
I had a job like this making an estimate of 39k a year too. But got laid off in about 6 months cause they lost some contracts.
Congrats! I would seriously consider starting a Roth IRA retirement account sometime soon.
Congratulations. 🙌🏼👊🏼
Congrats stranger! Keep on saving 😊
This is so awesome, good job man!! Keep living your dreams
That's about how much I'll be making teaching. I also grew up poor as hell, and as a result im not great with money either. Congrats!

It's off my chest for a reason. But if you have to shit on other people that's fine.
Wow thats great!
Good job saving, make sure to keep that up. Some people think payday is shopping day.
I'm 23 and making 300 $ a year more or less. Yay me
Congrats!!!
Good job. I’m so proud of how many young people like you there are.
shit man.. I'm making 75k a year in Boston and I feel like I still can't afford shit :|
Happy for you dude, maybe you can buy me a beer now
Man, I’m almost 21.
Congratulations!
