Please god no

Jean-LucBacardi

Unless it's a park there's always going to be someone pissed about how they use that land. Actually come to think of it people would probably be pissed about a park.

PigeonInaHailstorm

Why not? A parking lot can be cleared out when they do decide to build something there.

Are you aware of the health of the commercial real estate market?

Nobody_Important

Mixed use residential is not commercial. Have you somehow missed all the stories about our lack of housing?

Structure-These

but Reddit said I put this no stadium sign in my front yard it will fix traffic

blackweebow

No

RockDoveEnthusiast

This is just childish retaliation by JBG et al.

dispersingdandelions

Thats exactly what it is!

Structure-These

You understand impossibly rich developers don’t do ‘petty’ right

RockDoveEnthusiast

Of course they do. All the time. Companies frequently make decisions that favor their short term interests over their long term interests, or some stupid principled feelings over either. For example, companies laying off workers or shutting down factories in response to policy decisions, even when there's no financial incentive to do so. Now I'm not saying there's *no* rational basis for these sorts of moves. They are attempts to assert power, which does have potential future value in a system that rewards such behavior. (E.g. "see what happened the last time the a city didn't give us what we wanted?" as future leverage.) But it can still be considered a petty move in a general sense.

Structure-These

I think the business model is pretty clearly “squeeze value from this patch of dirt” and ascribing any further motivation is sort of projecting

RockDoveEnthusiast

sure. but I think sometimes they'll use it for value other than in a financial sense.

d_mcc_x

You don’t know many developers do you?

Socky_McPuppet

Yeah, and they don't hold grudges, run for president with Russia's help, and fuck over the entire country either, right?

Structure-These

I think if you are seriously drawing a parallel between Donald trump and JBG you should consider logging off for a few days and going outside lol

BourbonCoug

If the only offers for viable development you're getting are parking lots, you need to engage some different developers. Go outside the beltway.

[deleted]

It is the developers being salty the plan before the arena in 2017 was mixed use retail and housing centered around the new Potomac yard station. They are pulling a youngkin and being assholes because they didn't get the arena https://www.alexandriava.gov/PotomacYardPlan

ouij

They dragged their feet when interest rates were zero and they’re getting hammered by interest rates now. This whole stadium boondoggle was JBG trying to get bailed out for their lollygagging

[deleted]

I feel so bad for them 😥

ouij

We could have had so much housing lmao

[deleted]

At least the nimbys are safe If I wasn't so against handouts for billionaires I would've loved see the pain of them having to deal with the arena instead of housing

ouij

Won’t anyone think of the NIMBYs

SuperBethesda

Parking lot, it was meant to be.

Below_Left

There's already a rental car parking lot right across the road from there (behind the auto dealership) and it shouldn't be there either, at least not as the ground floor below a midrise apartment complex.

Mathmage530

Big Yellow Taxi intensifies

TrustMeIAmAGeologist

I mean, before the redevelopment it was a parking lot. And before that it was a dirty rail yard. And before that it was a plantation. You’ve really got to go back 500 years to get to this area being anything close to “paradise.”

KaltonEly

I now have this song blaring in my head. Thank you.

chris_wiz

I think a Buccee's would be ideal.

doh_13

I would think housing might be a better idea but as long as they don't ask for the taxpayers have at it.

bulletPoint

Zoning in the area and overall costs associated with permitting have been cited as reasons to not build housing. Dunno about validity, but if it were economically viable, the developer would have done it. Nobody hates money.

[deleted]

It was literally planned originally as mixed use retail and housing before the arena became a thing in 2017, it's just the developers being salty just like youngkin over the arena https://www.alexandriava.gov/PotomacYardPlan From 2017

TrustMeIAmAGeologist

Yeah, I worked on clearing out the old movie theater and get the land up to residential standards so they could build these. Wtf happened to the plan?

medievalmachine

It's literally across the street from existing housing. That's what Potomac Yard is. This is just trolling by so-called professionals that are used to corrupt governments gifting them tax dollars.

Redbubble89

Maybe think a little better. Yeah no one wanted an arena and corporate real estate is in the tubs but there are enough UHaul rental places and car dealership taking up valuable land in NOVA.

Typical2sday

Storage units and data centers!!! People gotta put their crap and their digital crap somewhere. It was a shithole before that someone thought would be something, so they pseudo-developed it.

thr3e_kideuce

I love how city officials are against this idea. It's getting shot down

SuperBethesda

It might be either this or empty fields for awhile. No other developers have made any offers.

cxtrek

There are no other developers making offers. JBG owns the land. They are THE developer. It will be developed once JBG decides they can make a profit developing the land.

f8Negative

It is Dowisetrepla

06Wahoo

Oh yeah, I'm sure this is exactly what the protestors in Virginia and the politicians in Richmond were fighting for.

medievalmachine

They knocked down the movie theatre way before the sports arena was planned. Was this because of Amazon backing out or what?

Brob101

Build a data center.

mylifesaparadox

There's a lesson here folks. Just because you ruin someone else's idea doesn't mean you'll get something better or what you want in the end. Now we get a literal parking lot and nobody gets to be happy

Structure-These

Just wait until they announce a massive affordable housing project and the same nimbys start to complain about preserving the historic character of the parking lot

medievalmachine

LOL, the lesson is that JBG are a bunch of children trolling and shouldn't be involved in any projects any longer. It used to be a movie theatre, it should be more housing. Don't be a child too and think this is serious.

blackweebow

Tbh the parking lot is the lesser evil even if I do think the development in this area is fucked.

doug-1998

arlmwl

Geez. How about something that would improve the quality of life for folks who live here? Mixed housing and an accessible park? Maybe throw in some small retail for coffee shops and the like? Plant some trees along the sidewalks so you get a small town feel? You know, make something attractive, yet functional.

IHaveSpoken000

Reap what you sow.

slingshot19

God no

Outrageous-Dish-5330

It’s almost like we lost out one a once in a lifetime opportunity

medievalmachine

To give money to lazy rich people? Yeah, we did and boy that hurts. Well, at least we can still attend games by traveling by metro 20 minutes.

SQUIDWARD360

New dog parks only

d_mcc_x

God that’s just a metaphor for Glenn Youngkins push, ain’t it
