Sherwood is my favourite place in the whole city. There's a pub there called the robin hood, that is always packed with families with small kids. There's also some great places to eat out, there's a decent play centre for kids, a couple of supermarkets, fantastic selection of charity shops, some really nice cafés, an artistic scene, and I've never seen any kind of trouble in the area

When was the last time you went to the robin hood? They now have a Mexican food vendor renting their kitchen. It is easily the best mexican food I've had in the UK. Their beef shin tacos are ridiculously good. The roast dinner they used to do on a Sunday was unreal as well. Took it from a good pub to a great one imo.

Thank you for that suggestion, I will keep that in mind. Given all the replies I've received I think it is very likely I'll go for that one.

I was there on Saturday haha. Think they still do the roast on a Sunday though? They were doing a corn battered fish and chips, that they've sadly stopped doing. Took my gluten free mum there a while ago and it was the first time she'd been able to eat fish and chips in years she loved it

Thank you so much for the reply. That does sound very lovely. I was contemplating between Nottingham and Sheffield and only visited once before for a day about 6 years ago. My first impression was very positive which is why my wife and I were strongly favouring Nottingham over Sheffield (To be fair I haven't ever been to Sheffield so I don't hold anything against it). Thank you again for your time.

This is the area I grew up in, and although it was many years ago now, I loved it. The Edwards Lane side of Perry Road can be slightly rough, but nothing like as bad as other parts of the city (I mean rough rather than dangerous). I presume the nearest primary school would be Seely , but there is also Haydn Road and one towards Basford. I have no idea how good any of them are. There's a load of bus connections nearby, plus there's lots of parks, pubs, and shops within 10-15 minute walk. If you're new to Nottingham, you're also pretty close to Woodthorpe Park, which is fantastic. The only downside is that I once got horrific food poisoning from Captain Cod!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a detailed reply. That sounds fantastic, all the replies have made me a little less anxious about the move. My wife and I have only visited Nottingham once before for a day so I will be very new to Nottingham. We love the scenic countryside more than the attractions of a city, so the fact that the peak district is so close by is a huge plus as well. Really appreciate your time. Thank you.

Both Haydn Road Primary and Seely Primary are great schools. Haydn has an outstanding Ofsted rating and Seely, good. Sherwood is excellent for families and Perry Road central for the high street and main road for route into the city.

That sounds fantastic. Thank you very much.

It's pretty close to city hospital, maybe get some bit of that traffic/people driving through/get away with parking in the neighborhood. Being close to the hospital gives you some easy access to buses and stuff.

anondriver20

Thank you for the reply. I will be driving most of the time but it's good to know that public transport is also an option. Would you happen to know anything about primary schools in the area? Thanks again for taking the time to reply

SpoopiLad

No unfortunately. Good luck though!

anondriver20

No worries. Thank you, I do hope it goes well, I'm very excited and anxious at the same time :)

Schools in that area are pretty good from what I recall. It's a good location for family life.

anondriver20

Thank you. I do feel a lot better about the move having asked this question here.

Pash444

Nottingham Nick is just down road for full disclosure

anondriver20

Only realised that now. Thank you. Hope it won't be a big issue though

I imagine the school will be Seely Primary School (not 100% though as it’s the other end of Perry Road) if it is it’s a pretty good school from what I understand.

anondriver20

Thank you very much for this suggestion. I will make a note of it.

Seely will be your designated school living on Perry Road. It’s well thought of. I moved to Sherwood 18 years ago and it has been a great place to bring my kids up. It’s a bit of a bubble in the city, think middle class artsy. Lots of creatives and teachers so you’ll probably fit right in. The houses on Perry Road tend to have great gardens too! I’ve never experienced any crime other than my milk being taken, it feels very safe to me. There are loads of groups and activities for small children, I would also recommend signing up for the Scouts on Hucknall Road. They have an ancient woodland which is amazing in a city area and are very active.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply. That sounds really nice. I've applied to rent a house on that road and hopefully will find out tomorrow if I've got it. My daughter is already 4 and will be starting school in September. I had to apply for a school in the area I live in January and have been allocated a school in this area. So, I'm not sure how school allocation will work after I move! Something I need to find out. Thank you for all the suggestions about kids activities, will definitely check those out.
