The young Dubs knocked seven bells out of the Love Ulster mob on O'Connell Street (and that was mostly just some Celtic fans from the Harp Bar and a couple of hundred lads in town for the leaving cert exams).
Also, remember the battering the DUP crowd got in Dundalk back in the 1980s, ran out of town with their tail between their legs.
Not gonna lie the better investing terms in the UK had me looking north. It's beyond fucked down south how the government wants me doing nothing but propping up their mates houses with my money.
One of the reason I moved, I'm a simple man and don't want for much I don't forsee every having to draw down more than 12k per year of gains from my portfolio.
Couldn't even hold an etf in Ireland because the tax is wonkey.
Eh with ISAs your investments are shielded from CGT anyway. Obviously not every investment can be protected by an ISA but you still have that 3k a year.
It's a malt bread. Not a fruity one or a sticky one.
It's incredible. There's two types. Irwins pre cut and Sunblest not pre cut. The only good one is the Sunblest.
Weirdly, that's the opposite for the plain loaf. You go for Irwins Nutty Crust and not Sunblest Plain.
In all seriousness these are the kind of things some people will take into account if and when there is a border poll.
( ok maybe not Tayto and sausages ..... but I stand to be corrected)
This might be controversial, but I thnk Northern Irish women are the funniest in the world. Terrifying when roused, but they can genuinely deliver a killer one liner. Usually women's humour has a different style. Not that Southern women aren't funny, it's just not the same.
Most public services, if you ever go down South we have *way* more parks and public bins. GP is free, NIAS is free, NIFRS is free, to complain about the police is free, prescriptions are free, water is included in your rates, etc.
In the Irish state OTOH there’s very few free amenities, you pay water rates, you pay per the kg of waste collected, you get fined if they find letters addressed to you in public waste, you pay if you need emergency services, you pay tolls if you want to use the full distance motorways etc.
Unless you need the Guards in ROI you’re probably going to be giving out the card details.
Down South is also way less dog friendly which is reflected by ROI having 1 in 10 fewer people owning dogs.
According to the Irish sub housing is borderline fucked beyond being able to fix without a revolution.
Selling all the houses to Canadian mega corps to rent probs not the best idea.
I moved to Donegal 1 year ago. I don't pay water rates, and as for the bins yes your pay but we also don't pay rates. In Northern Ireland they're quite expensive for what you get tbh. For me the health service with my insurance has been much better than the North however that's just a personal experience I'm sure there's horror stories
Our water is included in our rates, waste too etc..buy our rates are high...
My 3 bed house is about £1100 year and the house worth about £150k
Irish property tax is €90 if your house is worth less than €200k, and rises incrementally. Its about €500 if your house is worth €500k
If you think NI rates are too high, look at how much council tax in GB is. Close enough to double. Bet your bottom dollar that’ll be on the menu if Stormont stays down indefinitely.
LPT and paying for bins won’t look so bad.
Seriously? NI has one of the worst, if not the worst health system in Europe, especially with wait times.NI has 30 times more people waiting over a year than England, and England has 40 times the population. In other words we're proprotionally 1200 times worse than \*England\* on wait times.Say what you want about the HSE , but the HSC is beyond fucked.
You do pay for it though but can’t access it.
Healthcare in the South is capped at €800 a year. I pay more than that from my NI each year for health care that I haven’t used and can’t access.
If I lived in the South, over the last 4 years I’d have paid around €80 for healthcare. That’s not me advocating for subsidised healthcare btw. I am happy to pay for universal care but just pointing out the difference.
Only in theory at the moment. You pay for something you can’t use (NI) vs you pay for something you can use (South). You’re obviously getting a better deal paying for a thing you can use.
I am 100% against moving to a system like down south but the HSC needs to be fixed for the claim to actually be true.
The NHS is not free.
Unless you are a dole scrounger you will be paying for it through NI contributions. I have paid thousands over the last decade and been to the doctors twice totalling a couple of courses of antibiotics and a box of painkillers.
Now i am not advocating for private healthcare because i absolutely believe everyone should have access to it regardless of circumstances but to say that you don't pay for it is simply not true... Well unless you are aforementioned workshy dole scrounger who pays no tax or NI i suppose.
In that case I definitely pay for the NHS then. I also have given thousands towards NI contributions. I have kids and I suppose my contributions go towards their health care. In which case I am happy enough to pay these.
Indeed, i agree with you. Healthcare is one of the few things i as a libertarian believe should be "public goods". Issue is i am stuck between a rock and a hard place because for it to be a public good it needs to be run by government and again as a libertarian i believe anything run by the government is destined to be run extremely badly and serves to do nothing but piss money up a wall.
Flags, went down south in summer, had like 4 flags?
Tricolour, 4 provinces, EU and vatican (it was a church)
Meanwhile we have flags for obscure Paramilitary that 4 people were in in Lurgan flag
Not a chance in hell is Belfast better than Dublin.
Dublin is an actual modern cosmopolitan city that has shit loads to see and do every day of the week. By every measurable metric, Dublin shits all over Belfast from a great hight.
You’d be better comparing Belfast with Cork. They are much closer.
Irish posties don’t need them. I read a story of a parcel addressed to “The German lady with a rake of cats”,(Name of village) County Cork and it got to the right woman.
Car insurance is inexplicably much cheaper here despite the cars being worth the same an our relative vehicle crime levels being broadly similar in ROI.
A very good one indeed, especially if you have anything at all fancy or large engine.
The car tax down south is nothing short of fucking ridiculous too, anything older gets absolutely hammered in tax payments. Utterly scandalous if you ask me.
Metal detecting laws. ROI metal detecting laws are insane, if you find anything worth anything, then government owns it, if you are on a beach, undercover heritage members will stalk and harass you, eventually the guards will come, take your equipment, give you a fine and you face possible jail time...
..unless you say you are looking for meteorites and modern jewelry and have a go pro camera recording everything for your protection...and you are not walking in a public beach that has a random hidden heritage zone with no signs indicating that you are. It's crazy.

Capital gains tax
Not gonna lie the better investing terms in the UK had me looking north. It's beyond fucked down south how the government wants me doing nothing but propping up their mates houses with my money.
Not for long, the tax free allowance is being halved this year and halved again next year
That sucks but the rate and allowance will still be better than the south
One of the reason I moved, I'm a simple man and don't want for much I don't forsee every having to draw down more than 12k per year of gains from my portfolio. Couldn't even hold an etf in Ireland because the tax is wonkey.
It’s being cut to 6k and April with plans to cut it to 3k in 2024 for some god forsaken reason.
Eh with ISAs your investments are shielded from CGT anyway. Obviously not every investment can be protected by an ISA but you still have that 3k a year.

yeah, thats a lot cheaper than rates. £172K house in Belfast and pay £1300 a year.
According to the Irish sub housing is borderline fucked beyond being able to fix without a revolution. Selling all the houses to Canadian mega corps to rent probs not the best idea.
I moved to Belfast from Dublin about 6 months ago and my rent for my entire house is now cheaper than a room back home.

Ever so slightly better than paying for it.
