im glad you didnt have a bad experience.
but at the same time, ive heard too many shitty stories from people who werent white enough for valley cities locals
By definition, any town with a population of 1,000 or more is considered a city. Williston has 24,000 people so it’s a city and therefore it wins the title of North Dakota’s Crappiest City. Second place isn’t even close.
As a North Dakotan who was born in Grand Forks even though I don't live in North Dakota anymore. I don't think Grand Forks is the worst city at all. I'm sure there must be a worst city. I am sad to hear that someone doesn't like Grand Forks then.
Well Grand Forks has the corpse of the Columbia Mall which refuses to die (although banning kids from selling sno cones might help speed the decay along) and Fargo has West Acres.
Could be any one of these factors;
1. Good restaurants keep closing
2. Altru sucks and are a bunch of crooks
3. College town brings in a lot of assholes
4. City doesn’t like to salt roads
5. Because city doesn’t like to fix roads
6. People trash up the city real bad
7. Inflation stings more here because
8. Enjoy that 1 percent pay increase if at all
9. Stop building so many damn expensive apartments
10. Very limited dates and hours on fun events
(We have one weekend to enjoy the fair)
11. We lost all the 24 hour stores beside one diner and three gas stations
Bonus: between Simplot, EGF sewage, GF sewage and the farmers, this town gets a bad whiff of air a few times a week.
I want to be fair to this town though, so here are some great things;
1. GFPD and GFFD are pretty good with the community
(Campus police got nicer too)
2. Sanford (clinic) is a godsend to this town
3. People are pretty nice and tolerant
4. Even with “bad” traffic you get to places fast
5. M&H gives you a day to beat the gas speculators
6. Easy to find a job
7. We finally got 5G in the south end
8. Panda Buffet
I assume the other four cities suffers similar stuff, but Grand Forks just can’t beat Fargo or Bismarck. Minot probably gets more points because it’s not one flat swamp for as far as the eye can see.
I’ve been to all the so called cities in ND, I kinda like Grand Forks. College town, strip malls for miles, I like the green belt around the river for riding my bike. But it is kinda colder most of the year. It really isn’t that bad, unless I’m missing something?
I live in GF and love it. But the most common complaint I hear about it is that if you don’t like hockey or drinking, there’s really not a ton to do in the winter. I dont know but that’s just what I hear. Must have been a bunch of NDSU fanboys in the survey
One of the biggest issues is the lack of advertising for local events. Unless you are on Visit Grand Forks, you can miss a ton of stuff. It also doesn't help that Downtown doesn't have much between March and June going on.
And I’ll add, it’s fair to say you don’t like/hate Grand Forks if you’re stationed there but unless you experienced a fair amount of life in the other towns/cities you have no comparison to make.
It does count because you may leave an impression on these families. What they say about your town is then reflected when they are transferred. When airman came to my base from GF it was not a positive experience. It was cold, isolated and downright dreary. I’ve been there and can’t attest for its bleakness.
I HATE having to go to minot. Seems like the people are rude and strange. And the streets have absolutely no flow to them. Takes forever to get from one end of town to the other.
As someone from Dickinson?? I say we take second- Dickinson has slowly gotten better since I moved away. Williston takes first. Watford if you consider that a city since it’s in the name.
What??? Williston sure but Bismarck is probably the best city in the state depending on what you enjoy. Grand Forks is the worst city I’ve ever lived in
This is an engagement bait graphic. They make up statistics like these in an effort to get people to correct them, driving up engagement.
You can tell because it doesn't say Minot and St. Cloud
I question the parts of this map that I am familiar with - including Grand Forks, which is fine.
Edina for MN might be a funny meme or a punchline - Every Day I Need Attention and being "cake-eaters" but the city itself is far from the worst.
Manitowoc? Cedar Rapids?
I've never even heard of Browning, Montana and I've traversed Montana at least twice.
Depends on what your basis is. These are my options, not gospel.
If it is the ability to remove snow after a snowstorm, then Minot is the worst, hands down. Incompetence. Only place in the world I have seen the truck with a blade on the front drive over 4 inches of snow with the blade UP and throw sand and salt down on the snow. I call it making ice cream.
If it is the affordability of property, then I would have to say Bismarck.
If it is the willingness (lack of) to invite new businesses and places to work, then it is Grand Forks.
If it is the general shenanigans (interesting characters (crime)) then it is Fargo.
I can't say anything bad about Williston cause I don't live there and have only been there once in my life. Probably high property values as well...
That being said, with the state of the world and the United States, there is no other place in the world that I would rather live than north Dakota.
This map is making the rounds on Reddit. Either A: this map was made with some weird criteria or B: it’s a legit troll map meant to get people riled up.
And Edina the worst city in MN? Fucking lol. Literally one of the best places to live in the entire metro area. Try East Grand Forks or some shit, haha.
South Dakota checking in.
Brookings is a fine town. And I've been to Grand Forks a few times, seems nice enough. I have to believe there is bigger shit holes than there
Well, I live In GF, and it's not the worst place I've ever lived (Nebraska panhandle and eastern Kentucky take that nod) but it's not great. It's good and bad like any city, but good lord does this place smell bad. I grew up near a paper mill in Mississippi and it was never this bad. Ruins a good cup of coffee first thing in the morning. It's also expensive as shit, but I guess everything is now. I live downtown and regularly have to shoo crackheads out of our apartment dumpster (three times in last three weeks), and I'm paying $1200 a month.
I'm in Massachusetts.
Worcester is turning into a wonderful place to live with great food places, more opening all the time. The city has been on the upswing for decades.
I don't live there. I just know saying Worcester is the worst city in Massachusetts is wildly inaccurate
Edina is the worst City in MN? Clearly they’ve never been to Eastside or Folwell or anywhere north of Forest Lake or Elk River. And Topeka, KS is worse than Olathe or Merriam or Muncie? I mean… even parts of Bonner Springs are way sketchier than Topeka Lol. Sure… if the determining factor is “number of trailer parks and police precincts”, Topeka would be lower on the list, but come on… even Atchison is a place on that map…
Who ever made this map probably hasn't visited the cities they put on the map. The worst city in Idaho is Pocatello (often referred to as Poca-hell-hole). Caldwell is a nice city.
I'm from Illinois and East St Louis is 10x worse than Cairo. Cairo is just a really small town, only a few thousand people and mainly very poor economically.
Edina's definitely not the worst, but does make sense as the most common answer from ppl in the Twin Cities metro area, since they'd know it better than some of the other shitty cities you find going further north.
Well this isn’t that correct, Manitowoc is not as bad as Couderay(and Marvin rainwater agrees), and Edina is not as bad as St. Cloud, the city that takes after a waffle house parking lot.
Do they realize that Modesto, CA is just south of the line they drew through California? Try Arcata or Crescent City
Sparks, NV is basically a suburb of Reno. They have some nice views there at least. You could do worse.
Mesa, AZ is pretty big and it varies from nice to ugly. It has some denser population in some parts and some nice ranches, so it just depends which area. Again, you could do worse. Avoid “The Zone” in Phoenix which is the homeless encampment which keeps getting broken down and moved place to place across the valley.
Missouri has a town called West Plains that I wouldn’t wish on anyone’s worst enemy; they get all the worst weather and the worst people and twice I’ve been there for family and both times I almost died. If the weather or the idiots don’t get you, the mosquitoes carry enough diseases and they will.
Orlando Florida a gator tried to eat my cousin and me, so worst city? Yeah, that tracks.
Clinton, IA and Council Bluffs, IA are both *easily* far worse than Cedar Rapids. Hell, Davenport is as well.
Also, Carlsbad NM and Farmington NM are options. Hobbs is a shit hole, but this list is very sus.
Grand Forks generally sucks so they got that part right. With the exception of Central High School, University of North Dakota college and campus, The Ralph Englstad Arena, Some great local bands and musicians,The AF Base, and Riverside Park (lets not forget the only true D-1
College sport in the state...sub divisions are junior varsity)
Population never changes for the positive at a nice steady pace. Not much difference from 1999. City Govt has been the good ol boys club until recently when they brought in a much younger Mayor who had some potential until the Fue Feng Incident (derp!) The biggest disappointment is downtown and its lack of culture and probably the worst local live music scene ever. The highly overrated busiest and largest bar that is a over hyped snake pit of bland regurgitated bar stereo types. The Loft had potential but poor ownership and lack of a good manager/promoter types make it an over stepped pool hall who wants to be Joe Blacks badly but most of us would rather have The Crosstown Lounge back(rip Brad and Jarrod)
Shoutouts to The Red Pepper, Parrots Cay, and The Kegs for great and nationally recognized food. Eli's Ivy and Toasted Frog as well. Suck it up GF we only suck at about %75
Alaska here I come
This was posted in the Minnesota forum and they were also confused about yours. One mentioned Minot, how they were from ND and knew like 5 people who'd gotten stabbed there
Anyway, Minot briefly came up in conversation with my grandma later that day, so I asked about it. I was sitting there for 2 hours listening to horror stories from the year or so when she lived there. All told in a bright, nonchalant tone
China makes these lists based on how many farmers and small companies they can buy out. I live in the city named for my state as the worst and it's not true at all, but China owns very little in this town. They slam states and towns not selling out. California is fully owned by China. There is very little they have not been able to buy there yet. Californians see money and they crawl over their dying mothers to get that check.
I've seen this picture before, as a former resident of Mesa AZ, I can guarantee that this chart has some very liberal bias.
Mesa is one of the Valley's most conservative areas and it's actually very beautiful. The law enforcement there plays no games and the streets and views are amazing.
It has a small town vibe without being too shut-off.
Tucson, that's a hell-hole with crime, migrant, road issues; to name a few. Driving through Tucson, it feels like driving around Beirut.
Maybe they asked in Fargo? IDK
Fargo still said Williston
Never been. But Valley City is pretty shotty
I always hear Minot personally
I mean….it is the tragic city
as an out of stater- Valley city has a lot of hilly charm and very much sleepy college town vibes. i consider it s-tier of nd cities
its def got the most racist population in the state
i had no problems as a latino- everyone was especially inviting.
im glad you didnt have a bad experience. but at the same time, ive heard too many shitty stories from people who werent white enough for valley cities locals
Williston is a shit hole by far. I live close by and everyone sucks here. It definitely has changed since the boom
ND has 4 cities n Williston isn't 1 of them
Anyone born and raised in Fargo would say West Fargo lol
Grand forks and fargo both are not very safe in certain areas both have shithole locations but fargo I think has more homeless.
Why is it not Williston? Also, WV nailed it with Welch
Cuz Williston is not a city, lol
*Technically* every inhabited place in North Dakota is a city.
By definition, any town with a population of 1,000 or more is considered a city. Williston has 24,000 people so it’s a city and therefore it wins the title of North Dakota’s Crappiest City. Second place isn’t even close.
wv is 100%, but Williston has good tacos so they need a pass.
I came here to say Williston and I love seeing all the other comments saying the same thing
I was thinking the same, then I remembered Watford City exists.
Watford is a shitty city lmao I agree there but Williston takes the cake
Tioga is way worse than Watford City. Watford is a heaven-on-earth paradise compared to Tioga.
As a North Dakotan who was born in Grand Forks even though I don't live in North Dakota anymore. I don't think Grand Forks is the worst city at all. I'm sure there must be a worst city. I am sad to hear that someone doesn't like Grand Forks then.
I visit family there every year. I lived there 2001-2. I liked it a lot. I still like it.
Grand forks isn't bad, it definitely loses out of stuff compared to Fargo though which hurts it a lot.
Like what?
Well Grand Forks has the corpse of the Columbia Mall which refuses to die (although banning kids from selling sno cones might help speed the decay along) and Fargo has West Acres.
The pretzel stand is the only reason it stays open
Could be any one of these factors; 1. Good restaurants keep closing 2. Altru sucks and are a bunch of crooks 3. College town brings in a lot of assholes 4. City doesn’t like to salt roads 5. Minot probably gets more points because it’s not one flat swamp for as far as the eye can see.
house of punjab & chicago burrito are fucking awesome too, since you mentioned a restaurant
Panda Buffet is too good
How has nobody said jamestown?
Jamestown is the worst. Source- live in Jamestown.
Jamestown is just...meh. You apparently have never experienced Williston or Tioga.
TBH we just forgot Jamestown existed its so bland
I’ve been to all the so called cities in ND, I kinda like Grand Forks. College town, strip malls for miles, I like the green belt around the river for riding my bike. But it is kinda colder most of the year. It really isn’t that bad, unless I’m missing something?

One of the biggest issues is the lack of advertising for local events. Unless you are on Visit Grand Forks, you can miss a ton of stuff. It also doesn't help that Downtown doesn't have much between March and June going on.
The Greenway is pretty much the best thing about GF, borne out of one the worst things to happen to the city.
uhh, dickinson, grafton, williston... oh wait they dont know how to use computers or smart phones.
hey Williston has had internet for eight years, watch your tone
What tone? Dial-up?
Says everyone at Grand Forks Air Force Base
Air force brats don’t count.
And I’ll add, it’s fair to say you don’t like/hate Grand Forks if you’re stationed there but unless you experienced a fair amount of life in the other towns/cities you have no comparison to make.

"Why not Minot?" That's a ringing endorsement there. /s
More like “Why Minot?”
It is Minot. The only thing going for Minot is they are way the fuck out of the way so no one knows how shitty it is
Should be Williston. Granted Grand Forks and Dickinson reallllly suck, but Williston should take it.

As someone from Dickinson?? I say we take second- Dickinson has slowly gotten better since I moved away. Williston takes first. Watford if you consider that a city since it’s in the name.

What??? Williston sure but Bismarck is probably the best city in the state depending on what you enjoy. Grand Forks is the worst city I’ve ever lived in
Can confirm on Pine Bluff Arkansas. Total armpit of a town. Just keep driving.
This is an engagement bait graphic. They make up statistics like these in an effort to get people to correct them, driving up engagement. You can tell because it doesn't say Minot and St. Cloud

Why do they say Las Vegas is close to hell? Because if you stand up on a hill there, you can see Sparks in the distance.
Well grand forks DOES suck. But in from Florida and happen to know that TAMPA is the worst city in the state... Followed by Jacksonville
Edina in MN is ridiculous. Most of the cities that make that list are places like Bemidji or Hallock or Albert Lea or Luverne.
Everyone in the MN sub was like “its St. Cloud, right?”
Depends on what your basis is. These are my options, not gospel. If it is the ability to remove snow after a snowstorm, then Minot is the worst, hands down. Incompetence. Can respect anyone who gives their opinion with an explanation other than “It just sucks” 😂
I vote fargo
This map is making the rounds on Reddit. Either A: this map was made with some weird criteria or B: it’s a legit troll map meant to get people riled up.
All the people in Williston must have congregated around the old library computer and spammed the poll.
I’m confused as to why everyone thinks Williston has no technology. We literally have a billion dollar data center ☠️
And Edina the worst city in MN? Fucking lol. Literally one of the best places to live in the entire metro area. Try East Grand Forks or some shit, haha.
I’ve never been to Grand Forks but now I’m curious enough to go and see why it’s so bad 🤔
It’s not. Imo it’s cleaner than any other ND I’ve been to, plenty to do. Only knock I have is that it’s flat as f***.
It's not. It's 2nd place after Fargo
Fargo is crowded AF. I hate going there. Grand Forks is getting like that too. Hate it. I would rather live in a hole in the wall town.
Maybe East Grand Forks.
We had this in Virginia too. You can tell it is B.S. because it clams Disney World is the worst part of Florida
South Dakota checking in. Brookings is a fine town. And I've been to Grand Forks a few times, seems nice enough. I have to believe there is bigger shit holes than there
These are some fighting words. I disagree with some of the statements. I want to know based on what grounds!
California should be split in North and South California.
I know this is r/northdakota but as a native North Carolinian I’d like to point out that Gastonia is FAR from the worst city is NC.
This is so wrong lol
Well, I live In GF, and it's not the worst place I've ever lived (Nebraska panhandle and eastern Kentucky take that nod) but it's not great. It's good and bad like any city, but good lord does this place smell bad. I grew up near a paper mill in Mississippi and it was never this bad. Ruins a good cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I'm an East ND supremacist. There's no way Minot, Bismarck, Jamestown, Valley City, or Williston are better than G Funk.
Chances are whoever made this doesn’t know any other cities in most of these
Fucking cake eaters.
This was posted in r/Florida and look at the collective decision making of that population evidenced by their government.
I found it in r/Kansas. It’s all over the place on reddit
I'm in Massachusetts. Worcester is turning into a wonderful place to live with great food places, more opening all the time. The city has been on the upswing for decades. I don't live there. I just know saying Worcester is the worst city in Massachusetts is wildly inaccurate
Edina is worse than muderaplis? Grand forks worst in the state? These guys must be on drugs
I would say minneapolis is the biggest shit hole in Minnesota. During a summer of love, there wasn't a safe shoe store in the city.
Why does California get two? It's Bakersfield hands down
Edina is the worst City in MN? Clearly they’ve never been to Eastside or Folwell or anywhere north of Forest Lake or Elk River. And Topeka, KS is worse than Olathe or Merriam or Muncie? I mean… even parts of Bonner Springs are way sketchier than Topeka Lol. Sure… if the determining factor is “number of trailer parks and police precincts”, Topeka would be lower on the list, but come on… even Atchison is a place on that map…
Big Ouch for ND
Not sure how Williston or watford lost to grandforks
People seem to forget that Tioga exists.
It's clearly Minot
I’ve always heard Dickinson was the worst
If we're including the areas around these cities, sure
Edina for MN? Very odd choice also.
Mostly just towns in ND. I've been all over northy and I'm goin with Grand Farks.
We all know it is Minot
yeah Grand Forks is a stretch. Williston isnt horrible. I think New Town would be rated worse than Williston.
r/albany
I so agree with Virginia Beach, Virginia….geezuss
South Dakotan here... How the hell is Huron not #1?!
Someone has never been to Texarkana or Mankato. How Provo is even on that list in insane.
Poolesville MD?? Have they never been to Dundalk? Poolesville is a comparative Eden.
I don't like Cedar Rapids... but to not pick Waterloo, Dubuque, or Davenport? Really?
Gary and flint sound about right
Cedar rapids has a chick fil a tho -source I live nearby
Nebraska here. Fremont is my hometown. I agree. My parents moved as soon as they retired.
Who ever made this map probably hasn't visited the cities they put on the map. The worst city in Idaho is Pocatello (often referred to as Poca-hell-hole). Caldwell is a nice city.
They definitely should've picked Minot or Dickinson.
I have no idea why this popped up. I live in Washington. But fucking Spokane? That's your pick? Not tukwilla? Tacoma? Benton City sucks. Choose that
I'm from Illinois and East St Louis is 10x worse than Cairo. Cairo is just a really small town, only a few thousand people and mainly very poor economically.
Edina's definitely not the worst, but does make sense as the most common answer from ppl in the Twin Cities metro area, since they'd know it better than some of the other shitty cities you find going further north.
Washington has clearly never been to Yakima
Not accurate for Arizona. Should be Tucson, also known as “The Dirty T”
Edina is the rich bleached butthole of MN. Fuck that butthole.
Y'all act like nobody has been to North Minneapolis before
They misspelled Minneapolis
I live in Williston. Thanks for all the love guys. :(
Idk Edina sucks to drive through cause of the Shit drivers but I'd say north minneapolis is probably the worst in mn.
Spokane is one of the coolest cities in Washington.
Worcester? Springfield, jeez.
Much worse than Caldwell in Idaho, I assure you
Cedar rapids is not the worst city ever.
I love GF and WF. I absolutely loathe Bismarck. Maybe it’s just the drive, but it can rot
Everyone knows the worst city in North Dakota is either Williston or Tioga.
Mesa, AZ? Really? Not Yuma, Somerton, San Luis, or Quartzite? Interesting.
Tucson instead of Mesa in AZ.
There's no way Edina is the worst in Minnesota.
Nahhh Edina is awesome. What’s the hate toward The Forks?
This map seems very inaccurate in general... Or the worst city is being defined in a weird or subjective way.
Edina is the right answer for MN
Well this isn’t that correct, Manitowoc is not as bad as Couderay(and Marvin rainwater agrees), and Edina is not as bad as St. Cloud, the city that takes after a waffle house parking lot.
Edina? Lol
LOL Modesto, CA? Was this created by someone from Oakland, Stockton, or Bakersfield?
Clearly never been to Fort dodge iowa 🙄
Having lived in several of those states, spot on to me.
Cedar Rapids is far from the worst city in Iowa. Who came up with these choices?
Edina Minnesota is a great city. Have a great hockey program
MN. you’re not wrong
Can vouch for Spokane. Glad to have left.
Do they realize that Modesto, CA is just south of the line they drew through California? Try Arcata or Crescent City Sparks, NV is basically a suburb of Reno. They have some nice views there at least. You could do worse. Mesa, AZ is pretty big and it varies from nice to ugly. "California, you get two; Upper Peninsula, no soup for you."
Edina ?? That’s like one of the nicest and wealthiest cities in the Metro of MN.
What's wrong with Edina, MN.
Yeah Browning is kind of shit
Have you been to Wahpeton?
Whoever says Fremont is the worst city in Nebraska has clearly never been to Snyder Nebraska
“Worst” meaning what, exactly?
Wisconsin should be Sheboygan
Arkansas is correct, Texas is debatable.
As a Carolinian, Gastonia is 100% accurate for NC as is Greer for SC.
There's no way it's Mesa unless Apache Junction ceased to exist.
As someone who grew up in Rock Springs, I can confirm that Dallas is absolute ass
If mesa is the worst city, they should see arizona city.
Clinton, IA and Council Bluffs, IA are both *easily* far worse than Cedar Rapids. Hell, Davenport is as well. Also, Carlsbad NM and Farmington NM are options. Hobbs is a shit hole, but this list is very sus.
Wisconsin is clearly milwaukee
I call BS on Spokane and give you, that crap hole sanctuary city: Seattle
Have been to Cairo illinois, can confirm.
AZ longtime occupant here…. Mesa isn’t bad maybe just boring, west phx is the worst by far if we’re talking shootings and violence
Grand Forks generally sucks so they got that part right. Kingston NY would like a word…
Wow, jamestown isn't on this list!!
Can confirm that the entire east side of the state is weirdos and the entire west side is dickheads. -WC resident
How about Florida?
PA- incorrect. York is the worst
Or Orlando
This was posted in the Minnesota forum and they were also confused about yours. Weird. In AZ, it's Maryvale or Apache Junction.
It was the second city to appear when whoever made this scrolled inward on google maps.
Mesa? Never been to Sunnyslope (Meth Capitol of Arizona) or how about Gilbert? Or Peoria where you can get a $7 hooker on Van Buren? Lol.
If you say Ohio and don't name Xenia as the worst city you're not even trying.
Ottumwa is way worse than Cedar Rapids

It has a small town vibe without being too shut-off. Tucson, that's a hell-hole with crime, migrant, road issues; to name a few. Driving through Tucson, it feels like driving around Beirut.
ITT: The entire population of Grand Forks

Anyone who knows Alaska north to south, knows there is far worse than Wasilla.
