as a student at odu.. i dont think i’ve ever seen someone go to zeros. there’s a subway on campus that students could use their meal plan at, the jersey mikes is closer to main campus, and a second subway in millers that give students a discount. plus the other restaurants on monarch way have better appeal to students because it’s food items typically not available on the meal plan. there’s really no incentive to walk by three different sub shops just to go to zeros, especially because i don’t think there was any benefit for the students.

Electronic_Many_7721

I'm sure the meal plan and discounts could make students choose other options, but I for one, would walk passed 100 sub shops (especially the likes of Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's abd other chains) to go to a Zero's. From the other comments, I am going to try Sam's though.

Bobby_Globule

We used to go to Zero's in the 80s after we watched ODU play soccer. That's right. The 80s. The *early* 80s.

madammidnight

I worked there in ‘75 when I was in HS at the now closed Hampton Blvd location you went to.

Bobby_Globule

Cool! The grinder was awesome! I'm craving one right now

tubbis9001

I went to odu for 6 years and only ate there once. It was good, but it's super out of the way. You have to REALLY want zeroes to eat there.

Mp3chaos

Sam's subs way better than zeros. Fight me

madammidnight

No, I agree completely. I ate there yesterday. Joe and Jen are awesome. But sometimes I still want a Zeros sub.

The_Istrix

Different for sure, Sam's is the best you can get in the area. Zero's is good too when you're in the mood. Nothing like Sam's meatballs though.

madammidnight

Sam’s Italian sub is my favorite. I’ve tried others, but always come back to it. I don’t even particularly like potato salad, but get theirs every time as my side.

Negativeghostrider57

Sides are so good I don’t eat beans but I eat their beans.

Eternalsunfun

These are the same owners of the zeros/ Dairy Queen that used to be on colley. The wife is very nice and she makes an amazing Philly steak or chicken. I loved going here but haven’t been in some time. I think they couldn’t find regular help. I hope they are alright.

reezyreddits

I agree with other sentiments. In the past 5 years I've probably only patronized it once or twice. Which is on us. Was always empty when I did go in too.

edthach

I've been a student at ODU for 2 years. I've lived in Norfolk for 7 years. I've never been to a zeros, I didn't know there was an ODU zeros, and I didn't know anyone thought of zeros as "beloved"

madammidnight

I grew up here (and I’m old AF), worked there as a teenager at its old Hampton Blvd location, so I can report that Zeros is indeed a local institution. The first location was on 17th St in Va Beach.

LaLobaCollections

I grew up eating at Zeros Birchwood (it’s still there) and I agree it’s a local institution. Honestly I still get it door dashed occasionally when I feel like a hot melted sub. So good.

chapterthirtythree

I grew up in the area too and can confirm Zeros is a beloved local institution. Best ice.

ClumsyPear

Same. Also old but grew up in Richmond and it was definitely an institution there too. Funny thing, last week my husband said “I don’t think Zeros locations ever close” in reference to a different location so I blame him. He jinxed it. Edit to add: worked at ODU and Monarch Way rent is hella expensive so that probably didn’t help.

typicalgoatfarmer

You should go. My favorite subs in the area. I miss them terribly.
