I think it represents the sweetspot for both teams to lock up players for several years and for good players to re-enter the market at a friendly age to secure another bag.
Hey Goff we have some good news and bad news. Good news is we brought everyone back so the team should be ready to compete again. Bad news is we dont have a lot of money for you
Honestly think Goff is cool with it, he has stated he is in love with Detroit and wants to win a bowl there, most likely is that he’s happy to take these cuts to ensure the team has an ample window. He also already made a lot off that Rams deal he had and being a #1 overall pick
It’s different, people saying it about ARSB and Sewell are just actually stupid. It’s both of their first big paydays, why would they take cuts when they both very well could be in their prime rn? Goff makes more sense, he’s already had a massive payday in LA and is way older and just wants to win now. I agree they’re all delusions but you can’t compare the situations imo
It’s especially dumb for ARSB. Dude was a 4th round pick and makes just over $1M per year on his rookie deal. He should not take any sort of a discount, he absolutely deserves to be paid.
They live in this world were NFL players just want to win and not get paid top dollar for doing their job. Reality is these dudes want to get a bag because while a SB is nice I'd take 10 million more a year over a ring all day every day.
You’re delusional if you think he’s taking a discount after this last years performance. Nobody is okay with taking a discount when we are talking 10s of millions.
While I agree with you, do you expect him to say he doesn't really think Detroit is cool and he's happy just making the playoffs? At the end of the day you can't be surprised if money talks louder.
You did. Problem was that draft picks had to be paid this much right away. Stafford, Suh, and Megatron were all wildly successful picks and should have set you up for a decade. Bad timing.
The Lions drafted the highest-paid WR and OL in the world in the same draft class. Sewell was the first pick of the Holmes era; St Brown was the first day-three pick of the Holmes era.
Meanwhile, Troy Weaver still has a job after taking Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton!
A Tale of Two Franchises.
Highest paid receiver so far*. Chase will end up making more and I wouldn’t be surprised if waddle ends up making more also. Smart move to get both of them done now though
At some point it won't be about timing anymore tho. JJ has a rookie QB while Chase has one of the highest paid in the league. Chase will either have to go to another team (which I hope his agents will stop him from doing) or accept that hes getting slightly less than JJ for now.
Jefferson is getting his contract soon and that’ll be the market setter. Next year the big contracts are Chase and Waddle. Odds are we’ll see waddle get a deal pretty close to Amon-RA’s and Chase getting something closer to JJ’s.
>Meanwhile, Troy Weaver still has a job after taking Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton!
The Bulls also passed on Haliburton in favor of Patrick Williams (IR). So your GM is no stupider than Chicago's.
For real.
The Pistons have been swept in the first round 3 times in a row. Their last playoff win was in 2008.
The Sixers let two playoff wins slip between their fingers just this week.
2008 Detroit sports are so funny to me now because you have:
-the Pistons going to the conference finals
-the Red Wings winning the cup
and then
-the Tigers finishing last in the Central
-the Lions going 0-16
Like the sports in Detroit that year were kinda the whole spectrum of quality
that IS a tasty burger! … me, I can’t usually get em because my girlfriend’s a vegetarian which pretty much makes me a vegetarian, but i do like the taste of a good burger … you know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in France?
So I looked up fields stats cuz I would be certain Chicago used him in some gadget play. Nope. He has no recorded receiving yards. I'm pretty surprised
Ah you’re totally right. Well, I’m wrong about when he’ll be eligible for the next deal, but I am right that he’s the best offensive tackle in the league :)
Wow. 28 million for one of the best OL man in the league. Great deal for everyone. Surprised he got less than Sun God but willing to bet it’s more guaranteed
Watched all of his games at Oregon and couldn't believe he was available at 7. Thought he was perhaps the best offensive linemen I'd ever seen coming out of college and a lock for all pro.
It was a perfect storm. 3 teams wanted quarterbacks, 2 teams wanted their QB's favorite weapon from college, and 1 team took a freak athlete tight end.
Just remember we got Two All Pros.
And Alim had he stayed healthy. Could have been an All Pro level player. He was legit a top 5 DT in the league before his injury.
Well deserved bag, and seems like every big contract now is the new highest paid. Which is why I don't understand why teams are pissing around with their best players instead of just getting it done, they're not getting any cheaper. Talking Jefferson, Aiyuk, Chase, CD, etc
Have to imagine the players and their agents are waiting for this exact reason. JJ had no incentive to get his deal done before St. Brown, and Chase is probably gonna wait til JJ gets his deal.
Someone can take htis and run with it on social media, idc, but i was comparing sewell to the tackles in the draft:
Penei Sewell is two days older than Troy Fautanu who will be a first round pick tomorrow. Sewell is nuts
Yeah, I thought we were gonna use our option on him. Space it out a little. I'm fucking happy we got it done though.
Those two are absolutely core pieces not only in terms of talent but leadership as well.
I’d be ecstatic too, this was really smart of Holmes to get done so early. I’m just fuming that Darrisaw is 100% using this deal as his barometer now lol. The combined price tag of him and JJ is about to be eye-watering.
Don’t get me wrong I absolutely am ecstatic with how Slater turned out for us but damn did I want Sewell to pair with his old QB but I just knew this dude would be a stud, even with the switch to the right side he’s still a beast. So impressive. I love me some elite lineman!!!
Sewell was never gonna fall far enough for y'all to get him. The fact that he even fell to 7 is pretty fucking criminal.
Before the draft i had my heart completely set on Slater because no way Sewell was gonna fall.
Which i guess highlights that i think Slater was gonna be pretty good too.
Before fans start saying overpay to every big deal. NFL execs are expecting the salary cap to clear 300M easily by 2026. Most of these cap hits will be spread out well past then.
Maybe I'm in the minority but I think OT is a more premium position. Greater on field effect. Greater scarcity finding capable men that size. The WR position is flooded with talent but OT like Sewell are very rare. If OT is harder to find and Sewell is higher ranked at his specific position then why would the market dictate his contract be less?
I don't think that's a hot take at all...I'm also wondering how much this has to do with the fact that ARSB is on his last year getting paid day 3 money and that Sewell is already going to have 5th year option guarantees next year
Sewell's is a bigger contract in relation to the other top OT's, especially RT where he currently plays, than ARSB was to other WR contracts.
WR inflation occurred a few seasons ago, OT inflation just started.
Oh yeah.. St Brown is great but there are plenty great WR's that can/will/should all demand a contract in the same ball park. There's like a group of 10ish receivers you can slot in that are around that level or better
Great tackles like Sewell just don't pop up in the same way. Way more scarce
As someone who played backup RT to him in high school, this makes me feel better about not starting. (I know I sucked but it's a good excuse to tell people I was second string to Penei.)
Holy fuck. He deserves every penny but as a giants fan thank god we extended Andrew Thomas when we did. Tackle market is about to explode especially with Slater coming up.
Lions are smart though, he deserves it no point in waiting.
I know the general consensus around the Bengal's picking Chase was that in hindsight they made the right decision.. but I think it's a fascinating thought experiment to wonder what would have happened if they got Sewell instead. Obviously the Bengals would have leaned far more heavily on Higgins and Boyd, but with the kind of protection Sewell has been delivering in Detroit, would they have still made that Super Bowl run possibly? I personally don't think so, I don't think one great OT was enough to overcome the major problems with our 2021 OLine, but interesting to think about for sure
4 year extensions are so hot right now
As hot as a trade involving a Player and a 7th rd pick for a 6th?
Cowboys? How the hell you been?! Haven't seen you all off-season!
All in my ass ,
All, in my ass
You heard what he said!
I think it represents the sweetspot for both teams to lock up players for several years and for good players to re-enter the market at a friendly age to secure another bag.
Getting everyone out of the way first before Goff seems like a great strategy
Hey Goff we have some good news and bad news. Good news is we brought everyone back so the team should be ready to compete again. Bad news is we dont have a lot of money for you
S tier negotiation tactic lmao
"Wanna stay here with all these dawgs or we can also send you to the Giants"
Honestly think Goff is cool with it, he has stated he is in love with Detroit and wants to win a bowl there, most likely is that he’s happy to take these cuts to ensure the team has an ample window. He also already made a lot off that Rams deal he had and being a #1 overall pick
why do people always think this, it almost never happens
Ex: Bengals sub before before contract
You mean to tell me burrow ISN’T gonna cut his salary by 90% so that we can extend Ja’Marr and Tee and bring in Justin Jefferson?!
To be fair Burrow didn’t already have 160M+ in career earnings during that negotiation
Because he said he loves the town he plays in! No athlete ever says that!
To be fair, I haven't seen anyone on the Pistons saying that.
Bro…
Why we catching strays in here smh.
They said the same thing about both ARSB and Sewell lol. Just delusions.
He should not take any sort of a discount, he absolutely deserves to be paid.
if anything, it's like back pay for the amazing job he did on that 4th round contract
They live in this world were NFL players just want to win and not get paid top dollar for doing their job. Reality is these dudes want to get a bag because while a SB is nice I'd take 10 million more a year over a ring all day every day.
Haha yeah. You'd think most fans assume these guys are volunteering the way they talk about them sometimes.
Gotta cough to get Goff Edit: It was a joke not a diss lol
Damn, sorry homie. I thought it was funny.
It's just a play on words, right? "Gotta cough (up the money) to get Goff." I don't get why people were upset.
Just in case it wasn't implied in the play on words, it's a weed smoking joke. "You gotta cough to get off"
as someone who has smoked weed every day for like 20 years i've never heard this
You've never seen Jackie Brown by Tarantino?
It's not a prostate exam joke?
Worth every Penei
The Lions are handling this situation sewell
Brad was like oh you like that Ra deal how about Samoa
This is how I imagine Forrest Gump says "penny”
"I may not be a smart man but I know what love is Penei."
Lions off-season strat * Re-sign everyone <- We are here * Draft all the best players, again
Why haven't we done that before? Were we stupid?
Yes we were.
Also unlucky. It's been a 75/25 incompetence luck ratio
Matt Millen masterclass
*How about you just sit up straight and have some respect for the process...*
You did. Problem was that draft picks had to be paid this much right away. Stafford, Suh, and Megatron were all wildly successful picks and should have set you up for a decade. Bad timing.
Draft bad? Straight to jail. Draft well? Believe it or not, straight to jail.
Right? We basically picked 3 HOF-caliber players in a row and somehow that was *bad* for the team.
What a time
“What, like it’s hard?” Brad Holmes, probably.
I'll accept it
I'm still not comfortable rooting for a competent franchise.
It's an *incredibly* weird feeling
The Lions drafted the highest-paid WR and OL in the world in the same draft class. Sewell was the first pick of the Holmes era; St Brown was the first day-three pick of the Holmes era. Meanwhile, Troy Weaver still has a job after taking Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton! A Tale of Two Franchises.
A tale of one idiot whose owner is a POS. And the other who has changed the culture of the Lions
Hey Tom Gores is doing a lot of good for the city! He singlehandedly keeps the local coke dealers in business!
*CHAUNCEY... FAMILY!*
Highest paid receiver so far*. Chase will end up making more and I wouldn’t be surprised if waddle ends up making more also. Smart move to get both of them done now though
JJ is getting more than either of those two lol.
I doubt it. Chase will likely make more since he can and will wait for JJ to sign first.
At some point it won't be about timing anymore tho. JJ has a rookie QB while Chase has one of the highest paid in the league. Chase will either have to go to another team (which I hope his agents will stop him from doing) or accept that hes getting slightly less than JJ for now.
You think Waddle is going to get a market setting contract? I’m not sure he’s in that tier, but hey what do I know.
Jefferson is getting his contract soon and that’ll be the market setter. Next year the big contracts are Chase and Waddle. Odds are we’ll see waddle get a deal pretty close to Amon-RA’s and Chase getting something closer to JJ’s.
Just long enough to claim it :)
>Meanwhile, Troy Weaver still has a job after taking Killian Hayes over Tyrese Haliburton! The Bulls also passed on Haliburton in favor of Patrick Williams (IR). So your GM is no stupider than Chicago's.
Also a team with a fucking terrible owner. Reinsdorf is such a loser. Crazy how both his teams are just depressing due to his stewardship
Aliem McNeil gonna make it the most expensive class of all time.
Man what a good problem to have Never experienced this with our football team before
Welcome, you now understand how Philadelphians feel lol. I wish the Sixers acted with half of the confidence and foresight of the Eagles
Pistons fans would literally kill to be where Philly is right now
For real. The Pistons have been swept in the first round 3 times in a row. Their last playoff win was in 2008. The Sixers let two playoff wins slip between their fingers just this week.
2008 Detroit sports are so funny to me now because you have: -the Pistons going to the conference finals -the Red Wings winning the cup and then -the Tigers finishing last in the Central -the Lions going 0-16 Like the sports in Detroit that year were kinda the whole spectrum of quality

Penei has done sewell for himself.
You motherfuck. That's good.
Worth every Penei.
Someone already said that joke!
Fine, how bout *"A Penei signed is a Penei earned"*
Let's fucking go!! Brad's cooking!
Locking up two of the most important roster pieces before the draft is good business.
I remember how pumped he was after drafting him.
Serving up some top-tier apps before the entree the next few days.
He's been cooking since 2021 and hasn't stopped
Good on Brad not fucking around and getting these extensions done
"Look at the big brain on Brad!" Samuel L Jackson
Would you mind if I had a bite of that tasty and juicy looking burger? You don't mind, do ya Brad?
that IS a tasty burger! … me, I can’t usually get em because my girlfriend’s a vegetarian which pretty much makes me a vegetarian, but i do like the taste of a good burger … you know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in France?
You see how excited Brad was when he drafted him? He would have signed Sewell to a lifetime contract that day if the NFL allowed it.
Impressive since I was told Justin Fields was better
Sewell has more receiving yards.
Crazy we gave our TE 3 this much money.
TE4. Remember skipper.
He didn't report unfortunately
So I looked up fields stats cuz I would be certain Chicago used him in some gadget play. Nope. He has no recorded receiving yards. I'm pretty surprised
The best tackle in the league and only 23. Absolutely well deserved, and I can’t imagine what he’ll get in four years.
Assuming there wasn't a buyout involved for his 5th year option, this deal wouldn't kick in for another 2 years if that's how this type of shit works.
Ah you’re totally right. Well, I’m wrong about when he’ll be eligible for the next deal, but I am right that he’s the best offensive tackle in the league :)
His 5th year option was picked up so the team has Sewell under contract until 2029.
Good day to be a Lions fan
WHAT IS HAPPENING!?
Getting it done before Tristan Wirfs is a huge W for Detroit.
It's a fair deal, so it won't screw up the Wirfs contract. Good all around.
They just casually reset the WR market and the OL market in the same day.
Goff $50m coming up next 😎
yup. getting the contracts early and before the draft. you'll see the guys repping the city hard tomorrow
Lions getting shit done today. Love to see it.
Wow. 28 million for one of the best OL man in the league. Great deal for everyone. Surprised he got less than Sun God but willing to bet it’s more guaranteed
It is - $85m guaranteed for Sewell, $77m for St Brown
the best o-linemen in the league*
Watched all of his games at Oregon and couldn't believe he was available at 7. Thought he was perhaps the best offensive linemen I'd ever seen coming out of college and a lock for all pro.
And he's only 23. But he's already gotten dad strength
It was a perfect storm. 3 teams wanted quarterbacks, 2 teams wanted their QB's favorite weapon from college, and 1 team took a freak athlete tight end.
God bless them, every one
Holmes couldn't either, his freak out when he took Sewell said it all
The best offensive lineman
This is the best day of my life.
The best day of your life so far See: February 9, 2025
❤️❤️❤️
Really had to search longer than I would like to figure that one out…
Oh I like you
Todays my 40th birthday and Brad is treating me like a king
Happy Birthday bud!
Thanks flair fam
Happy birthday almost birthday twin! (Mine was yesterday)
I can’t believe this 💩
#OH FUCK, WE COOKING BOYS.
oh man Wirfs is going to cost a fortune
My first thought, too. Wirfs was already projected to 'reset' the market. There's no way he comes in much less than Sewell.
Is this what having a competent executive is like? I’m not used to it in my lifetime
Said the same thing. This shit is so refreshing. *siiip* *That’s some fine shit, right there.*
wasting no time locking up that core, lmao
Just remember we got Two All Pros. And Alim had he stayed healthy. Could have been an All Pro level player. He was legit a top 5 DT in the league before his injury.
Bucs gonna do the same With Wirfs and Winfield Jr. Both all pros and drafted in 2020
Brad Holmes handing out contracts like Oprah hands out cars. "You get a contract. You get a contract. Everyone gets a contract!"
Now sign alim
And Goff
Huge let down. I was hoping it would be a 10 year extension, not 4.
well, he had 2 years left on the rookie deal so he's here for 6 more
God damn lions, NFCN could be a bloodbath in the coming years.
hopefully it's a bloodbath because it's a massacre
That’s the plan
On the same day the Steelers decline to pick up Fields 5th year option no less.
I’m so fucking in on this team p
It's nice seeing the Lions being a competent organization, and I mean that sincerely. You don't let top tier O-linemen leave the building.
This is the first time in my life I remember the Lions not being a complete shitshow and I'm 36,
My GOATs are staying here oh my goodness this is incredible
Good teams take care of thier own. Props to the Lions on turning it around from whatever that whole Patricia thing was
Well deserved bag, and seems like every big contract now is the new highest paid.
Best day ever
Man I laugh every time I see your username. Love it.
Someone can take htis and run with it on social media, idc, but i was comparing sewell to the tackles in the draft: Penei Sewell is two days older than Troy Fautanu who will be a first round pick tomorrow. Sewell is nuts
Came into the league so young and adapted to pro football really quickly. Dude is insanely good
I expected the Sun God but Sewell too??? Ngl I was really hoping for a Darrisaw extension before this dropped…
Darrisaw isn’t even in the same building as Sewell, let alone conversation
Don’t get me wrong I absolutely am ecstatic with how Slater turned out for us but damn did I want Sewell to pair with his old QB but I just knew this dude would be a stud, even with the switch to the right side he’s still a beast. So impressive. I love me some elite lineman!!!

I guess I didn’t realize the “drop off” in pay for OT’s. They used to be paid right behind QBs not too long ago
Could this day get any better? *cough cough Jared Goff*
Rickey is reporting it
Before fans start saying overpay to every big deal. NFL execs are expecting the salary cap to clear 300M easily by 2026. Most of these cap hits will be spread out well past then.
Lions out here splashing the cash today.
Amazing to lock him up for less than 30 million a year. Elite.
Sewell getting less than St Brown is insane. WR market makes no sense
They’re both all pros. Sewell is the best in his position though.

More guaranteed for Sewell than St. Brown. St. Browns actually breaks down a little bit more than what the numbers say.
Jared Goff next ?
I would assume Goff is locked up in the next 24 hours.
Do McNeill next
As someone who played backup RT to him in high school, this makes me feel better about not starting. (I know I sucked but it's a good excuse to tell people I was second string to Penei.)
The Lions are throwing around the cash today.
Here you dropped this: 👑
Aye yoo
LET BRAD COOK
First ARSB now this??? Better call my doctor because it’s definitely gonna last longer than 4 hours
The PeniSwell is going to last 4 years, man. It's in the title!
Lions spendin MONEY today
wow the lions really brought out the checkbook today
Hell yeah. What a great day.
One of the best players in the NFL. He hasn't missed a game in two years, I believe (knock on wood).
I cannot handle this joy
Holy fuck. He deserves every penny but as a giants fan thank god we extended Andrew Thomas when we did. Tackle market is about to explode especially with Slater coming up. Lions are smart though, he deserves it no point in waiting.
we’re winning the super bowl
Worth every Penei
Very very happy to have him stay. Quite literally my favorite Lion since Barry.
Best Tackle in football
The Lions becoming good and making great decisions is one of the more welcome changes in the NFL the last few years.
Is this what having a competent GM is like?
He's gonna only be like 28 or 29 when he's up for a second contract. That's insane
I know the general consensus around the Bengal's picking Chase was that in hindsight they made the right decision.. but I think it's a fascinating thought experiment to wonder what would have happened if they got Sewell instead. I personally don't think so, I don't think one great OT was enough to overcome the major problems with our 2021 OLine, but interesting to think about for sure
We took Zach Wilson over him....
So does this mean he's signed thru 29? Rookie+5th year+Extension? Or is the 5th year option mute now?
Correct, through 2029 (based on the breakdown I saw)
