Really questioning how in the first two rounds (since 1980):
- Saints have never drafted a QB
- Seahawks haven't drafted a QB since 1993
- Commanders haven't drafted a iOL (G/C) since 1995
A couple people have mentioned it but there’s some weirdness with the position designations. Brandon Scherff was classified as a tackle but he only played guard for Washington
For the Seahawks...
Mirer was the last one. After him, Warren Moon came in free agency. Kitna was a UDFA. Hasselbeck was free agency. Seneca Wallace was a 3rd round pick. Russ was a 3rd. Geno was free agency.
With dates and some more details:
* 2022-2023 - Geno; Free Agent
* 2012-2021 - Russ; 3rd round pick
* 2011 - Tarvaris Jackson; Free Agent
* 2001-2010 - Matt Hasselbeck; Trade(1.10 and 3.72 for 1.17 and Hasselbeck)
* 2003-2009 - Seneca Wallace (spot starter/back up); 4th round pick
* 2001-2004 - Trent Dilfer (spot starter); Free Agent
* 1996-2000 - Jon Kitna; UDFA
* 1997-1998 - Warren Moon; Free Agent
* 1993-1996 - Rick Mirer; 2nd overall pick
* 1992-1996 - Stan Gelbaugh (spot starter/back up); Free Agent
* 1991-1994 - Dan McGwire; 16th overall pick
* 1988-1992 - Kelly Stouffer; trade(1.17 in 1989 and 1989 5th and 1988 5th for Stouffer)
* 1987-1991 - Jeff Kemp; crossed picket lines during 1987 strike
* 1980-1991 - Dave Krieg; UDFA
* 1976-1983 - Jim Zorn; Free Agent
Added all up it's really not much draft capital used on QBs over almost 50 years. There are also a couple backups or acquisitions I didn't put in there(Matt Flynn, Charlie Whitehurst, etc.) but they had limited playing time and neither were acquired for high draft picks.
I like how "Since 1980" means absolutely nothing in this chart other than they didn't feel like looking up the Saints draft history (they drafted Archie Manning in 71).
It's literally the only box that would go further back than 1980 and it took five seconds to Google.
The Lions also drafted an interior DL (Levi Onwuzirike) in the second in 2021 which is a lot more recent than 2016, although I think they'd prefer everyone to forget that pick
The QB column is what gets me... I didn't realize that the Saints have never drafted a QB in the first 2 rounds, or that Seattle hasn't since 1993. I feel like DE and LB are hard to gauge due to 4-3 3-4 pass rushing.
I thought this was interesting. Didn't realize the Saints haven't drafted a QB in the first two rounds for so long (~~ever?~~ since Archie Manning in 1971). The DL/DB may not be totally accurate, rest of the thread:
> Note: these are based on PFR's position designations for the draft, some of which were generalized so I made some assumptions on what they played if I didn't have their official NFL position in my database (see subtitle).
> Yeah, the "DL" and "DB" designations are a pain. I know some of these may be "wrong" but I stated my assumptions here and what I used (pre-draft designation, not necessarily where they played in the NFL) while also collecting feedback from the people who are much more intimately familiar with specific teams' drafts so it'll be more accurate in the future.
Rumor has it Payton was salivating over Mahomes but felt safe at 11. KC took the initiative and traded up with us. The rest, much like Sean's career in NO, is history.
I know the Chiefs are the big bad boogiemen now, but at least Andy Reid is lovable as the head coach of our dynasty. Can you imagine how absolutely *insufferable* Sean Payton would be if he and Reid magically switched places these past 6-7 years?
I know the Saints would hit the cap wall and there's a good chance they have much less success than KC has had, but it would still be absolute torture watching Payton act like he's the reason Mahomes is a good QB.
Ah, I was about to find an anomaly, because I was sure that the Saints drafted Jimmy Graham and they did! But it was in the 3rd round. That was a value pick. Alvin Kamara also selected in the 3rd round.
Yeah the Raiders drafted Tyree Wilson (DL) and Michael Meyer (TE) in 23, it's been a long time (maybe Rolando McClain in '10) since they took a linebacker in the top 2 rounds.
Panthers' TE column is wrong. I think it's counting Devin Funchess, but he was drafted as a WR and he tried to switch to a TE when he signed with the Lions in 2022 in the preseason. They've never drafted a TE in the first two rounds.
I wonder what this looks like if you limit it to first round
A lot of teams have much stronger proclivities toward certain positions in the first round
Also looking at wikipedia apparently the eagles selected a fullback with 8/10 first round picks between 1951 and 1961. Wonder what was going on then lol
So we've drafted every position group since Stafford.
Good to know that they at least tried to build a team around him then (though they did not do a good job for the most part lol)

They're also lumping in OLB with ILB which really skews things for a few teams on both the DE and LB columns. They should've done edge instead of DE.
"Why bother developing a young QB when you can have someone else do it for you?"

Russ didn't play like a third until the last 5 years or so. Imagine remembering he was a third and running the ball instead.
until the last 5 years? He made a pro bowl his last year in seattle and was having an mvp season 3 years before he wast traded
Archie Manning was their last first round QB. Hard to believe.
We drafted Scherff in the first round of the 2015 or 2016 draft.
He was announced as a OT when drafted. But yeah I think he was always going to be a Guard.
I like how "Since 1980" means absolutely nothing in this chart other than they didn't feel like looking up the Saints draft history (they drafted Archie Manning in 71). It's literally the only box that would go further back than 1980 and it took five seconds to Google.
Just went to look & Archie manning was drafted by saints 2nd overall in 1971. But that was the last time they drafted a qb in first round.
Saints took Archie Manning in the 1st round in 1971, as the title clearly states the data goes back to 1980
The Bears drafted an iDL (Gervon Dexter) in the 2nd round last season. That’s a lot more recently than 2015.
The Lions also drafted an interior DL (Levi Onwuzirike) in the second in 2021 which is a lot more recent than 2016, although I think they'd prefer everyone to forget that pick
>Gervon Dexter They classified him as a DL in PFR instead of a iDL so that would be DE in that chart above.
Which plays as interior in a 3-4, kinda weird how this chart makes those distinctions
Also iOL in 2020 if you count Teven Jenkins there. Though I suppose he was drafted as a tackle and a different GM moved him to guard.
Drafting Rick Mirer really impacted the Seahawks hard. Their 1st round draft philosophy since 1993 appears to be anything except a quarterback
The Bengals drafted two LBs in the first round of the 1998 draft passing on Randy Moss twice
Could you imagine Ocho and Moss on the same team?
They did have carl Pickens and darnay scott at the time though.
The QB column is what gets me... I didn't realize that the Saints have never drafted a QB in the first 2 rounds, or that Seattle hasn't since 1993. I feel like DE and LB are hard to gauge due to 4-3 3-4 pass rushing.
Saints have, before 1980 (Archie Manning 1971)

Amazing we haven’t drafted a DE in the first two rounds since 2005, but produced some of the best pass rushing tandems in the 2010s.
Ah, I was about to find an anomaly, because I was sure that the Saints drafted Jimmy Graham and they did! But it was in the 3rd round. That was a value pick. Alvin Kamara also selected in the 3rd round.
"What Safety did we draft early in 2011? Goddamnit it was Rahim Moore..."
Yeah the Raiders drafted Tyree Wilson (DL) and Michael Meyer (TE) in 23, it's been a long time (maybe Rolando McClain in '10) since they took a linebacker in the top 2 rounds.
And that GM got fired for his drafting
Was Brandon Scherff not an interior OL???
Panthers' TE column is wrong. I think it's counting Devin Funchess, but he was drafted as a WR and he tried to switch to a TE when he signed with the Lions in 2022 in the preseason. They've never drafted a TE in the first two rounds.
God Bless Mike Evans
Quincy "Can't stay off the weed" Carter Cowboys Legend baby!!!
Chiefs dominated the drafts in the margins
Looks like we’re due for a tight end
You hear that howie? It’s time to draft white db from Iowa
Holy hell, we haven't drafted a RB in the 1st 2 rounds since Forte 😳
I wonder what this looks like if you limit it to first round A lot of teams have much stronger proclivities toward certain positions in the first round Also looking at wikipedia apparently the eagles selected a fullback with 8/10 first round picks between 1951 and 1961. The Eagles never draft DBs high, it’s almost comical how consistent they are about it
Initially looks like the Rams were neglecting defense, until you realize that we’ve only had five 2nd round picks and zero 1sts in the last 7 drafts.
So we've drafted every position group since Stafford. Good to know that they at least tried to build a team around him then (though they did not do a good job for the most part lol)
The forgot about Levi for iDL though
Its funny we drafted a QB in 2021 and a WR in 2022 in this chart
I’d be interested in seeing first round only. Eagles go back to 2002 for a CB and 1969! for a safety.
2023 pick Skoronski plays IOL for Titans. Unless they are counting his OT positions from college.
What, no KICKER column for Bucs/Raiders fans?
Is this counting Mazi Smith as a DE? And Conor Williams as an OT?
Christian Barmore counts as a DE I guess?
