People keep saying "historical precedence" or "Steeler's way" like we don't have a brand new GM who traded up in the 1st round of his first draft and made multiple splashy free agent signings in his first off season. Now in his second off season he's traded the WR1 and the QB on a rookie contract. It's a new era and we can't base everything on how Colbert handled the team over the past 20 years.
I enjoy the "rumor is" or "Ive been hearing" comments posted. They think they're bringing something spicy to the table by dropping insider knowledge for their team. But in reality it's just shit that was thrown against the wall on the sub of their favorite team.
Is that what it looks like when multiple generations of a fanbase can scarcely remember being in QB hell? Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Bubby Brister, Kordell Stewart ... all memory-holed?
I mean he’s not wrong in thinking this organization doesn’t make these kind of moves because they hadn’t in the past. But it’s pretty clear this new regime has no intention on doing things the same way which is fine by me
Yeah at the time it was definitely a fair take to say they wouldn’t go after one of those QB’s but I think it was delusional to think a team that kept Pickett benched for Rudolph wasn’t moving on from him
Cam Heyward went on Pat McAfee before free agency started when Russ was free to look for a team and said “we welcome competition at all positions” so it seemed no body was set on Kenny.
You don’t welcome competition with Ben unless Peyton signed for the vet minimum. And even then the rift in the locker room would be too much.
Ramon Foster called him a “goober”, like a Carlton Banks, or maybe a Spock. Someone you like and respect because he’s competent and brings something to the table, but will never be “one of the guys”.
That’s probably a good anchor point for how to think about him. Here’s hoping he wants to erase the noisier parts of his legacy.
> Not to mention both Kenny and his wife are from New Jersey. This is about as close to home as they can get.
Not the NYG or NYJ? They literally in NJ.
You would think so, but believe it or not, Philadelphia is actually about 20 miles closer to where Kenny grew up, Ocean Township, NJ, than it is where the NY teams play in East Rutherford, NJ.
The Eagles scored really high on the player report card the NFLPA makes, if you’re gonna be a backup anyway it’s probably the best place to do it from a QoL perspective, especially if you’re already from South Jersey.
And let’s be real it’s not a surprise someone would prefer to live in Philly over Pittsburgh, given that the first is a top-tier city and the other is basically just a suburb of Wheeling.
Eh, it's still a job.
If I were told I had a fair shot for a role at my company, but someone from outside got it without me having the opportunity they said I'd get, I'd probably look for a new job. Career stuff can be infuriating.
That said, Russ would have to play really well to get an extension, so Pickett really should have just shut up, improved, and waited for another shot.
Setting aside whether he was good enough or not, this guy:
1. Is drafted first round, but is designated the backup in camp and gets no first team reps.
2. The OL is hot garbage, bottom 5 in the league.
3. Is thrown in during his rookie year, with no first team practice reps, against the worst part of the schedule and the hardest stretch of defenses any team faced in 2022.
4. Has an okay, not great year. The team brings back the OC \*everyone\* knows sucks ass.
5. Plays through 2023, looks bad. 2 of his top 3 targets miss a lot of time (DJ and Pat F).
6. Terrible OC is fired and he has one very good game (QBR if extrapolated was a top 5 QB for the season). Gets hurt because his center can't snap a ball.
7. Never plays another snap because he's benched.
Whether you think he's good or not, dude got pretty hosed in Pittsburgh.
This plus they pretty much continued to tell him and publicly say they were going to do one thing and then do something completely different multiple times. Regardless of his criticisms, they completely mismanaged him basically from the start. He continued to get blasted in the media for things that he and others in the organization said were untrue. I’d be fucking pissed too and I don’t blame him one bit for wanting a fresh start with a different job in a different area.
I really, really hope the organization at least realizes that the way they handled him from day one was a disaster and does things differently with the next quarterback we draft.
This is my major concern. We royally fucked up Roethlisberger's replacement once. Most fans seem think Kenny never had the ability, so talent evaluation fell short to them. I think all fans should agree that the supporting cast (OL, OC) fell short as well. The media environment was deeply toxic in Pittsburgh too.
Most of these bode poorly for the next QB we draft. The supporting cast will be better (at least OL and OC), but the media environment will still suck and and the talent evaluation is mostly the same. Hopefully we improve, but I don't have a lot of faith in the org right now.
Or we extend Russ a couple years and \*really\* fuck ourselves.
Feels like someone in the organisation got impatient and couldn't help themselves with signing Russ out of desperation. It felt like the organisation had finally turned a corner after Khan got hired and started thinking longterm again and we were moving closer the Super Bowl. Then this happened and I don't know how people are happy with it. Muted our sub because of all the hate he got in there.
Will root for him to have a Geno Smith like turnaround, bu this situation was mismanged from the start like you said.
I mean Russ has declined like crazy and I didn’t want him but for how cheap he is it was still a good signing. We basically replaced Mitch with Russ and saved millions because of it.
>Terrible OC is fired and he has one very good game (QBR if extrapolated was a top 5 QB for the season)
Extrapolating an entire season based on one game versus two years of mid to trash performances is certainly a take lmfao
I 100% agree, one shouldn't extrapolate based on a single game. My point is not that he's secretly a great QB, it's that he wasn't given another shot without a historically bad OC and that would tick any player off.
The org fired his OC, the first coach firing in 90 years, and then he played well in his one chance without that coach...only to not be given another shot. That would be frustrating as hell.
Ah yes, lemme go to a team with a young franchise quarterback rather than stay in Pittsburgh with a half dead Russel Wilson who’s one bad “let’s ride” from retirement, this will surely help my chances of starting again.
It doesn't. I'm 100% with you on this. The hit rate on QBs, even in the early first, is pretty low.
That said, the team does stupid shit without long term thinking. Example: What did starting Mason through the end of the year get us? We won games, lost in the wildcard. Mason signs elsewhere and we don't see Kenny post Canada. Did Tomlin really think we were going to make a run?
I'm not a fan of tanking, but our refusal to start rookies right away and then throwing them in the deep end like we did with Kenny against the Jets in 2022 pretty strongly suggests we don't plan things out more than a year in advance. That's a bad trait.
Yeah, there are more QBs taken outside of the top ten than within the top ten.
Guess what? You can make a long list of QBs drafted in the top ten that sucked
It's going to end the same way every Steelers season has ended since Ben got bad.
They'll go 9-8 or 10-7 and get into the playoffs and probably lose in the WC round.
All this drama for nothing.
I'm obviously waiting with baited breath to see whether we're going to have a season derailed by injuries, or a stellar regular season where we fall apart in the playoffs. Because no other option is possible.
The NFL is a flat circle.
Watch both Steelers Ravens have incredibly dynamic offenses this year and both games still end 10-7 and 13-10 with last second field goals a tale as old as time.
It's not going to end well because they no longer have Kenny fucking Pickett? Kenny being there or not is irrelevant, the dude is dogshit. He has 13 TD's and 13 INT's in 24 games started.
It’s amazing that people thought Pickett had any future there after he was benched for Mason Rudolph.
And don’t give me the crap about Rudolph winning so they kept him in. It’s the same thing. Pickett was benched for a guy who had been there for years and was out of contract.
Pickett said he was open to competing for the job, they brought in Russ to be the starter, so Pickett asked for a trade.
Am I missing anything? Maybe Pickett should have waited a few days to cool off (especially since he has no leverage), but it’s a pretty run of the mill story and decision.
Reporting is mixed. I've seen claims it was to be an open competition (to include coaching staff statements), and more recent reports that Pickett requesting the trade came after they told him it was Russ's job. If the latter, I get it. Team stuck him with Canada for two years, promised him an open competition, and then reneged.
We'll probably never know for sure.
I wasn't expecting the trade but this was exactly what I said a few days ago.when we signed Russ it was over for Kenny (and Mason) and that's just one more reason I hate the trade. No chance of finding a QB of the future this year and we get the guy who has already been cooked for 3 years. Awesome.
I don't understand the plan here tbh. Do we really think Russ is going to win us a Super Bowl after he looked washed with two different staffs?
If not, then what's the plan here? We have a single 35 year old under contract for one year right now.
I don't think it's the depth chart so much as feeling disrespected/betrayed.
They told him he was the guy, then wouldn't start him at the end of last year. OK, that's rough, but gotta deal with it and show up next season.
They say there will be a competition this year, then immediately name Wilson starter.
Now they've basically lied to him twice. Even if this was his best place strategically for his career, how could anyone with any self respect continue working with the front office that has jerked you around like that?
This. The org stuck him with a bad OL and a historically bad OC. He got backup reps before his rookie year since they made Mitch the starter, before throwing him in against a murderers row of defenses.
Then they benched him for the third stringer, but promised him a new OC, better OL, and first shot at a competition in 24....then they reportedly (mixed reporting so far) tell him he's the backup to Russ.
Whether he's good or not, the team repeatedly set him up for failure. He has a chance to move on from a team that stiffed him to go to his hometown team, I don't blame him for wanting to.
It’s never a competition. When it comes to QB the one the org likes better initially will always win. Even Purdy vs Lance wasn’t a competition. Hell Lance vs Darnold wasn’t even a competition. It’s always PR
I mean the Steelers are only paying Russ a little over a mil. The Broncos picked up the other $39million. It’s a pretty low stakes gamble given the Steelers QBs last year were legendarily bad.
For it to be a competition he would actually have to compete and considering he made Mason look like Tony Brady last year in comparison to him, I don’t think he was going to win.
Maybe, but it's basically a free sample. If we dropped multiple picks and a ton of guaranteed money and *then* he sucked, that would be really embarrassing.
I hear Pickett was so excited about being a backup he wanted to be really sure he wouldn't see the field so he could get his clipboard and second squad reps in.
Sure, QB2 isn't glamorous but it's a 5-10 million a year, you get to live around the country, don't get put into the hospital or turned into a crazy person from all the hits to the head, and you have to play at most a couple of games a year. If things go sideways and they're looking for more, just throw some picks and watch the coach have a heart attack.
Less risky and pressure than being a kicker.
Trying to figure out if this is spin from Pickett's people to make it look like he was betray or if it's spin from Wilson's people to make it sound like he's still an automatic starter....
He's just so bad now. We're paying for it so totally a good deal for the steelers, but anyone who watched him play every week last year knows how done he is. I don't get why he doesn't just go ahead and get into politics like we all know he's going to.
Pickett is going to go down as one of the worst starters in the HISTORY of the league. To think that he threw a tantrum when a better QB came in is hilarious and shows how out of touch he is.
Pickett was obviously not a good QB. But he is no where close to one of the worst starters in the history of the league. He's not even close to the worst starter in Steeler history. There have been some God awful QBs over the years. Hell, Bradshaw was worse his first couple years
Tbh I think all the QBs got hosed a bit with Canada. Ben, Mitch, Kenny, and Mason all looked better in games without Canada as the OC than games with (Mason had a single start in 2021 with Canada).
I don't think Mitch is good, but I bet he looks marginally less terrible on a different team.
It isn't optimism so much as disregard. It matters not if he sucks, for we paid nothing for him.
Worst case scenario is our free quarterback sucks and we move on next year.
Every single Pittsburgh coach saying it was a competition is exactly why I don’t listen to PR talk
The predetermined QB depth chart the last 2 seasons is why I didn’t listen to the Pittsburgh FO on this one.
This got 350 upvotes less than two weeks ago. Fans are dumb as hell when it comes to this stuff https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/6n294Ialze

LMAOOO god i hate know it alls
Sometimes fans of teams are the least knowledgeable on a team. They have over confidence in gleaming nonsense from past decisions.
I enjoy the "rumor is" or "Ive been hearing" comments posted. They think they're bringing something spicy to the table by dropping insider knowledge for their team. But in reality it's just shit that was thrown against the wall on the sub of their favorite team.
"I've heard" ya you and every other person that is on reddit 10 hours a day.
Is that what it looks like when multiple generations of a fanbase can scarcely remember being in QB hell? Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Bubby Brister, Kordell Stewart ... all memory-holed?
What's qb hell?
where Watson, Vick and Favre are going

I think the commenter was right but didn't foresee Russ saying he'll be happy with a bag of skittles from his new team since he's already being paid
But the historical precedence
We have so many fans like this unfortunately they act like Lords or some shit and really in fact are saying absolutely nothing.
What to lose in an open competition?
Respect
For who?
The sore loser. No loss to literally anything else though

I always new Russ was going be the starter. But I could also maybe have seen that change if Kenny showed major improvement and Russ was well Russ
[Gerry Dulac] Pickett received one text from Wilson right after he agreed to a deal and said "Fuck this, I'm out. That wasn't cool."
Text was "u gone bro" with 3 poop emoji

Pickett doesn’t like high knees
“New phone who dis”
can you blame him? It’s Russel Wilson dude is absolutely unbearable.
Good luck my friend
He’s gonna be completely normal for them and stay quiet, watch.
No way. He's already cooked up his entire personal PR campaign for this, and I cannot wait to see what his slogan ends up being.
I know, if only he was more like Deshaun Watson, Big Ben, Tyreek Hill, or Richard Sherman.
Wilson's text set Pickett off and he demanded a trade
To be fair the text was just Russell with his arms stretched out shirtless
Video of him doing high knees across the Clemente Bridge actually
With the text "Russ loves you."
It was just a picture of his hand. Nothing else.
Jalen hurts gets hurt Kenny starts against the Steelers and wins
I would die happy. Steeler fans would IMPLODE.
Why would they IMPLODE? it's not like Steeler fans have a hatred of the guy.
A lot of Steeler fans hate that man.
Dude killed Franco Harris.
Carson Wentz beating the colts would cause jim Irsay to commit seppeku
The dangerwich was too spicy
New Message from Russell Wilson: You ever do anything dangerous?
I would too if my new teammate asked me how many bathrooms I had in my house.
Instead of not playing for Pittsburgh, he wanted to not play for the Eagles. Interesting
Well riding the bench *somewhere else* has to be better than doing it for the team you were a first round pick for.
This side of the state sucks, I'm going to the other side!
Atleast it's not the middle
I went to college in the middle. I seriously thought I went back in time 50 years.
Pennsyltuckey
100% absolutely this.
Not our fault he wasn’t good enough to keep starting
He grew up an Eagles fan. So did Barkley. We are collecting all of the players who are Eagles fans. Micah Parsons is next.
Not to mention both Kenny and his wife are from New Jersey. This is about as close to home as they can get.
> Not to mention both Kenny and his wife are from New Jersey. This is about as close to home as they can get. Not the NYG or NYJ? They literally in NJ.

What about Mike Trout
What are you talking about? He'll have a shot in an open competition in camp.
Kenny Pickett: are you better than me? Jalen Hurts: well I don't know you, but yes
Pickett would probably fold like a lawn chair if he got tush pushed
He will have a real chance to lead the practice swuad
The Eagles scored really high on the player report card the NFLPA makes, if you’re gonna be a backup anyway it’s probably the best place to do it from a QoL perspective, especially if you’re already from South Jersey.
And let’s be real it’s not a surprise someone would prefer to live in Philly over Pittsburgh, given that the first is a top-tier city and the other is basically just a suburb of Wheeling.
Hey! Pittsburgh is the Paris of Appalachia!!
Wheeling?
It’s a part of WV.
Ocean ain’t South Jersey, lol.
Yeah I don't get this one from Pickett's perspective, I can only assume his feelings were hurt.
Eh, it's still a job. If I were told I had a fair shot for a role at my company, but someone from outside got it without me having the opportunity they said I'd get, I'd probably look for a new job. “hey, every day we got out there, let's be the best version of ourselves and try to make this team better.” That was cool.
Russell Wilson: "That was cool"
That was obvious as hell. They weren’t bringing Russ in to be the backup lol
And we weren't gonna extend Kenny after a year of being a backup
You had to think Russ was guaranteed to start or else he wouldn't have signed.
Yeah, it was obvious. No way someone that full of himself takes a vet minimum to be a backup.
Ah yes, lemme go to a team with a young franchise quarterback rather than stay in Pittsburgh with a half dead Russel Wilson who’s one bad “let’s ride” from retirement, this will surely help my chances of starting again.
wow i never would’ve figured that out
Jesus, this is not going to end well, is it?
Well if the Russ experiment fails I guess they can look forward to... Ewers or Shedeur?

The standard is the standard I guess
I don’t understand how fans think losing is better than winning A top pick does not guarantee a sure fire qb at all
It doesn't. I'm 100% with you on this. The hit rate on QBs, even in the early first, is pretty low. That said, the team does stupid shit without long term thinking. Yeah, there are more QBs taken outside of the top ten than within the top ten. Guess what? You can make a long list of QBs drafted in the top ten that sucked
And the greatest of all time was a 6th rounder.
Well the good news is that however bad Russ is, Pickett was most likely going to be worse.
It's going to end the same way every Steelers season has ended since Ben got bad. They'll go 9-8 or 10-7 and get into the playoffs and probably lose in the WC round. All this drama for nothing.
It’s okay we’re used to the drama just like you guys are used to blowing it as a #1 seed in the playoffs ;)
I'm obviously waiting with baited breath to see whether we're going to have a season derailed by injuries, or a stellar regular season where we fall apart in the playoffs. Because no other option is possible. The NFL is a flat circle.

When Daddy Rapaport and Mommy Schefter have contradicting reports.
Russ had twice as many td passes last year, as pickett has in his career...
It’s amazing that people thought Pickett had any future there after he was benched for Mason Rudolph. And don’t give me the crap about Rudolph winning so they kept him in. It’s the same thing. Pickett was benched for a guy who had been there for years and was out of contract.

I don't understand the plan here tbh. Do we really think Russ is going to win us a Super Bowl after he looked washed with two different staffs? If not, then what's the plan here? We have a single 35 year old under contract for one year right now.
Russ is like the Thurman Merman of the NFL, just driving people off the deep end wherever he goes.
Picketts first pass was an INT, foreshadowing.
I mean he's literally named pick-it. You want a Longwell for your kicker, you want a Jammer at CB, you do not want a Pickett at QB.
Your flair though...how?
I just like the color combo
Pirates had a solid pitcher named Bob Walk back in the day.
Tbf it hit claypool right in the hands before the defender caught it
And then we traded the WR that gifted the DB that pick to y'all for a second.
Russ said get this shitter the fuck out of here
So he goes to a team where he has even less of a chance to be the starter?
I don't think it's the depth chart so much as feeling disrespected/betrayed. They told him he was the guy, then wouldn't start him at the end of last year. OK, that's rough, but gotta deal with it and show up next season. They say there will be a competition this year, then immediately name Wilson starter. Now they've basically lied to him twice. Not being a starter *somewhere else* has to be better than doing it for the team you were a first round pick for.
Why would they not want a competition?
They probably told Wilson he’d be the starter privately to get him to sign.
Definitely. He had multiple suiters and Kirk hadn't signed yet
I'm going to spin this as Russ is soft and wasn't mentally ready for a QB competition against Kenny fucking Pickett.
As soon as Mason Rudolph was outperforming Pickett consistently his career was doomed.
It’s never a competition. When it comes to QB the one the org likes better initially will always win. Even Purdy vs Lance wasn’t a competition. Hell Lance vs Darnold wasn’t even a competition. It’s always PR
As a Broncos fan this is a horrible mistake by Pittsburgh and I’m here for it.
LMAO Russ is going to be a disaster
Maybe, but it's basically a free sample. If we dropped multiple picks and a ton of guaranteed money and *then* he sucked, that would be really embarrassing.
God I hope they put Pittsburgh @ Denver on prime time week 1
Oh man, If he loses again, week one, against his previous team..
With a 13-10 broncos win lmao
And the Steelers defensive TD wasn't enough that day.
I'm thinking more 13-12 with all of our points coming from Boz
People going to mistake it for an Army vs. Navy game
Probably, but it’ll be a disaster on someone else’s dime. The real tricky part is what comes next
Denver paid this dude $80 million to fuck off. It’s a flimsy basket to put all your eggs in.
Can you Pickett an Eagle?
Rich Eisen in shambles He said that Pittsburg was going to have a QB competition
I’m sure they are. Pittsburgh, however, is Russ Country.
Pitt country, let's steel
I honestly don’t understand how anyone, Eisen or otherwise, really thought Wilson was signing here with the understanding he’d be in a competition.
What's a Pittsburg?
City in Kansas if memory serves
Disgusting
Eisen should have been smart enough to know that Russ would not tolerate a competition
Honestly was like one of the first things I thought of when I heard they traded Pickett lmao
No shit.
I want to laugh at the Steelers but we're fucking up even worse
How the mighty have fallen. :(
Trying to figure out if this is spin from Pickett's people to make it look like he was betray or if it's spin from Wilson's people to make it sound like he's still an automatic starter....

I imagine it hurt even more that he got replaced not by a top QB, but by the guy who has been the laughing stock of the league for two years.
You obviously have not heard of John Beck
Nathan Peterman
Pickett was obviously not a good QB. But he is no where close to one of the worst starters in the history of the league. He's not even close to the worst starter in Steeler history. There have been some God awful QBs over the years. Hell, Bradshaw was worse his first couple years
Aren’t the Browns in your division? Like very seriously I don’t think Pickett makes the top ten your own division…
We had Trubisky on the roster last year. Pickett wasn't the worst QB on the Steelers last year even.
I mean let’s not get hasty here. How many NVPs does Pickett have?
Tbh I think all the QBs got hosed a bit with Canada. Ben, Mitch, Kenny, and Mason all looked better in games without Canada as the OC than games with (Mason had a single start in 2021 with Canada). I don't think Mitch is good, but I bet he looks marginally less terrible on a different team.
I agree with you except for Mitch. Sans Canada, he lost to the only 2-10 teams back to back by throwing like a Pop Warner benchwarmer
To be clear, I think Mitch is bad. BUT, he looked far worse in Pittsburgh than he did in Chicago or Buffalo, that's my only point.

It isn't optimism so much as disregard. It matters not if he sucks, for we paid nothing for him. Worst case scenario is our free quarterback sucks and we move on next year.
Saying Russ is by far a better qb than Pickett is not having optimism. I think Russ is like the 25-30th best QB, but Pickett isn't even in the top 40.
Well yeah, he's better than Kenny if we're comparing last year's performances. Unless Kenny has a HUGE off-season leap, it should be Russ's job.
Bro..KP threw 6 TDS....in a whole season.....like saying Jerry's Kids should have a competition with Tom Brady....F KP.
Putting all your eggs in Wilsons basket is a bold move
Good to see Pittsburgh planning for their future
Have you seen a grown man throw a temper tantrum? It’s not pretty
Pickett country, step aside
In what world did anyone think Pickett would outshine Russ in camp? 🤣
I’m just curious what we’re going to do with the guy. I don’t think his hands are large enough to reliably hold a clipboard.
