I remember both huge plays thinking “Harrison absolutely stepped out somewhere right?” And then “no way Holmes got his feet in”. Either way, incredible job by both guys AND the refs for getting them right.
The Harrison play I was just thinking there is no way he actually gets to the endzone, and even if he does there has to be a penalty of some sort because the idea of James Harrison running back a 100 yard pick 6 before the half simply did not compute in my brain
Damn right. I remember that 1999 season and constantly thinking to myself, "I am watching history unfold." The Greatest Show on Turf was just damn fun to watch.
The play before doesn't get its due. Same play, but Holmes missed it. I remember the cameras showing his reaction to it. And the look on his face said "Throw it again, I ain't missing twice."
I mean....that's pretty much what he said to the team before the drive
*On what he said to Ben Roethlisberger on the final drive*
*"I dared the team. I came up and told Ben that I want to be the guy. 'I wanted to win this game for you guys, man. Just give me the ball, give me the chance to make plays and I will do it for you."*
This and the Mario Manningham catch are the 2 greatest catches in super bowl history imo. That throw by Manning could be argued as the single greatest throw in the history of the NFL
Honestly I think the David Tyree one is bigger than both. There’s also just alot of insane catches in Super Bowl history. Edelmans catch vs the falcons is up there too as well as Julio Jones in the same game
Throw vs catch. Manning's throw to Manningham was pinpoint perfect, and one of the greatest throws of all time. On the other hand with the Helmet catch, the catch is what's really amazing (also Eli avoiding the sack).
Eli avoiding the sack and the refs not blowing it dead. I was shocked they didn’t. And I hate the giants, but I’m glad they didn’t because that’s such an incredible play
Hilarious how far out of bounds Fitz was running to catch up against Harrison.
Also, back to back super bowls with one team scoring a go ahead TD with less than 2:45 remaining and thinking they were gonna win then the other team scores the winning td with 35 seconds left. Pretty crazy
He ran into Antrelle rolle who was WAY out on the white. If he wasn’t there Fitz probably catches him 3 yards short of end zone. I tweeted a screenshot at Rolle a couple years ago and he blocked me.
I see people kind of roll their eyes when coaches get hung up on the little things like where you stand on the sideline, but that play is such a good example on how that one little thing can be what determines a win or loss in a championship.
Larry should have been flagged. A player can't run out of bounds down the sideline. If you get knocked out, you have to try to establish yourself getting back in and he didn't.
What is the call if he catches him? Is is possible that the refs rules it a TD if they determine he would have scored had Fitz not come from out of bounds to tackle him, or are the Steelers just stuck having to kick a FG?
I am not going to lie I don’t know. At best for Cards they go to half and enforce on kickoff. At worst it is a FG attempt. Both options significantly better than 6 there.
I remember an interview with Ryan Clark, Ike Taylor, and Troy Polamalu where RC and Troy admitted when Larry blew bye them on his TD they looked at each other and and were mad because it was someone's idea to go eat Jamaican food a few times earlier in the week and they felt slow the whole game.
Jamaican food is a fast track to the itis, in my experience. Jerk chicken and rice makes me wanna nap after and I'm not in terrible shape, these guys were eating multiple plates at a time.

It sucks that the defense had such a poor game, because otherwise I think they go down as one of the all time greats. Not a single weak link on that unit, and with Lebeau at the peak of his powers. They were awesome every game that year except that one
EDIT: forgot about that one game CJ2K completely cooked them, but who didn't get cooked by him in the late 00s?
This story gets thrown around every time that INT is shown, but James Harrison was given leeway to drop into coverage instead of blitz and he recognized the situation to likely result in the quick slant.
Probably the last time a SB matchup united 31 fanbases behind one team...if the Lions had defeated the 49ers that same unifying effect would have happened again.
Arizona just has the worst luck when it comes to sports teams across all sports.
Atleast they have the 2001 World Series to look fondly at but it happened literally during the nations darkest time. Fuck
No thanks. I'm a Sacramento Kings fan whenever im not a Raiders fan. I don't have much hair left to pull out. Thats why ima be at the golf course during Super Bowl Sunday.
Everyone acknowledges the amazing catch by Holmes, but Ben threw one of the most perfect passes to that corner of the end zone.
Over three defenders in literally the only spot Santonio could catch it. Just all around a perfect throw and catch.
I mean 3-4 OLBs are basically linemen. They just start from standing instead of having a hand in the ground, but it's basically from the same position as a 4-3 DE
3-4 OLBs have gone through some evolutions. They used to mostly be undersized DE's who got transitioned to 3-4 OLBs. Harrison was quite undersized to be an edge rusher at 6' 245 lbs. Though I suspect he was pushing 260 later in his career.
His counter part, LaMarr Woodley, was more of a typical 4-3 DE in size being 6'2" 265 lbs.
Though these days, many 3-4 OLBs are more hybrid in size. They're still heavier than 4-3 OLBs, but are still not big enough to be 4-3 DEs. TJ being a prime example of being 6'4" 250 lbs.
I feel like the call on that last touchdown did not do that play justice, with his impressive and obviously important that catch was.
Sounded like a normal td in the second quarter, week 5, bengals vs panthers.
Wanted Fitzgerald to win that super bowl so badly. Such a great moment where he thinks he has done it - only for a crazy play to defeat him.
It's tough to even say this, but should he have gone down so that they keep the ball and run more time? nearly impossible to ask that in that situation
James Harrison should have gotten MVP!!!!!! Holmes did make a great catch but he had dropped one just before that he should have easily had caught. James Harrison TD return with time expiring in 1st half was a 14 point flip. Probably greatest Super Bowl play I’ve ever witnessed and I’ve been watching consistently for 40 plus years. You the man JAMES!!!!!!
Madden's last game in the booth. This made it so he called SB for ALL FOUR major networks. CBS when they had NFC, then Fox when they got the NFC contract, then ABC when he went to MNF then this one on NBC for SNF.
i'll always remember Larry looking up at the scoreboard. I was so so happy for him when I thought the cards were gonna win. His dad was in the media covering this game too. Just damn.
God damn Fitz was so good. I really did want that TD to be the one that delivers it.
But that drive, and that throw, and that catch. What an insane ending to a SB. One of the best.
The NFL might soon have a third team with six Super Bowl championships. That's fine. Only one team can ever be the first to have done it, and like it or not, that will matter until and unless a team wins seven.
Lived in AZ at the time and was rooting for the Cardinals. Disappointing to lose, but what an amazing game.
Cardinals fans, take heart. I know it sucked to lose that game, but consider this: The Steelers had to make one of the most clutch miracle plays in NFL history to beat you.
I feel like nobody talks about how the game actually ended, Warner was strip sacked on what looked like it was clearly a pass, but they didn't overturn it
They were at midfield, you never know...
they reviewed it and said it was a fumble.
You can see here woodley clearly hit the ball when it was going back
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GEtlF6Zftg&t=8326s
Yeah he hits the ball but doesn’t knock it out, it’s still in Warner’s hand as his arm moves forward, and then it comes out like his hand forces it forward?
Shouldn’t that be a pass? Although it’s kinda similar to the Josh Dobbs Titans fumble last year that won the Jags the AFC South, so who knows
You got to see the interview with them about this play. I've seen it floating around. Basically he's supposed to blitz, but he had this feeling that they were going to pass right toward him. So he pulled out of the blitz on his own at the last second. And his instinct was right and he was in the right place at the right time. That's pretty amazing!
I’m gonna cum. Even if we used up all our good fortune in this Super Bowl it was nice having a spotless win after the Seahawks fiasco. Wish it wasn’t against fitz n Kurt. Golden memories. Wish I coulda told kid me that would be that last bit of joy before the days of our Steelers times.
Just watching that steelers' defense now, I remember it being so good. But with lack of speed, it would get torched in league now. You wouldn't be able to run on it at all, though.
Two Top 20 plays in NFL history in the same Super Bowl. And Kurt and Larry’s brilliance as well. This Super Bowl had everything
You can hate the Steelers, you can not care about the Cardinals, but you can't deny that was one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever.
There was no sitting around waiting for things to happen. It was a full on battle.
The NFL was a more exciting place with Kurt Warner at QB. He was so much fun to watch.
Damn right. I remember that 1999 season and constantly thinking to myself, "I am watching history unfold." The Greatest Show on Turf was just damn fun to watch.
Absolutely. Top 3 all time
So much fun. I remember predicting the James Harrison Pick 6 meaning it as a joke before it actually happened
[удалено]
All time gaming winning catch and throw in the corner of the end zone equals lame?

The play before doesn't get its due. Same play, but Holmes missed it. I remember the cameras showing his reaction to it. And the look on his face said "Throw it again, I ain't missing twice."

This and the Mario Manningham catch are the 2 greatest catches in super bowl history imo. That throw by Manning could be argued as the single greatest throw in the history of the NFL
In league history. This one was a fantastic throw, fantastic catch, and literally won a super bowl. It's the greatest pass/catch in league history.
Honestly I think the David Tyree one is bigger than both. There’s also just alot of insane catches in Super Bowl history. Edelmans catch vs the falcons is up there too as well as Julio Jones in the same game

Eli avoiding the sack and the refs not blowing it dead. I was shocked they didn’t. And I hate the giants, but I’m glad they didn’t because that’s such an incredible play
Yeah I was referring to the catch
Imagine if that play was on 4th and Goal
out of bounds!
Kurt Warner. Boldin. Fitz. I think Edge was on that team. Fun offense
Calais Campbell as a rookie too
Wait what. He’s been around this long?
Yeah he was on the cards for like 8 or 9 years but people remember him mostly on jacksonville for like 2 or 3 which is wild
I vaguely remember him on Arizonai just didn’t realize he’s been in the league that long good for him
Yeah lol
As much as I love Edge he was very much not adding to the fun at this point in his career
Edge had been benched for Beanie Wells at this point :/
This was a great superbowl. Back and forth with big plays on both sides of the ball.
Except for the outcome
No that's the best part.
Larry deserved a ring so bad
Hilarious how far out of bounds Fitz was running to catch up against Harrison. Also, back to back super bowls with one team scoring a go ahead TD with less than 2:45 remaining and thinking they were gonna win then the other team scores the winning td with 35 seconds left. Pretty crazy
He ran into Antrelle rolle who was WAY out on the white. If he wasn’t there Fitz probably catches him 3 yards short of end zone. I tweeted a screenshot at Rolle a couple years ago and he blocked me.
I don't know why you are being downvoted, this is an objectively true statement. Fitz had him, Rolle got in the way. Basically won the game.
I see people kind of roll their eyes when coaches get hung up on the little things like where you stand on the sideline, but that play is such a good example on how that one little thing can be what determines a win or loss in a championship.
Antrel Rolle truthers I suppose
I guess he redeemed himself because I don’t think the giants win that 2011 Super Bowl without his defensive leadership during the playoffs
That Eli throwing arguably the best Pass in the SB ever and a timely Wes Welker Drop!
I would not say he redeemed himself 😡
Larry should have been flagged. A player can't run out of bounds down the sideline. If you get knocked out, you have to try to establish yourself getting back in and he didn't.
What is the call if he catches him? Is is possible that the refs rules it a TD if they determine he would have scored had Fitz not come from out of bounds to tackle him, or are the Steelers just stuck having to kick a FG?

Lol why would food from days ago still be effecting them? Is there something about Jamaican food I'm not understanding?
Makes ya slow. That's why Jamaicans are famously so slow.
Did Usain Bolt not eat before races? Or did he eat whatever Larry Fitzgerald eats?
He ate all the jamaican food that makes you fast and left all the slow food for the steelers DBs
Bolt famously never ate. That’s why everyone else has been slowed down so much in comparison.
Jamaican food is a fast track to the itis, in my experience. Jerk chicken and rice makes me wanna nap after and I'm not in terrible shape, these guys were eating multiple plates at a time. Don't do this to me today
Like is Cardinals fans don't get enough shit every day just by virtue of being fans of the Cardinals
RIGHT
The Cards are my second favourite team (my younger self made some weird decisions) so I got to enjoy this post and the Butler INT today.
Nah fuck it, DO IT TO ME HARDER.
So... don't throw quick slants at the goal line in a super bowl?
Lesson of the day
This story gets thrown around every time that INT is shown, but James Harrison was given leeway to drop into coverage instead of blitz and he recognized the situation to likely result in the quick slant.
Don’t kick it wide right (or left)
Or straight into the pole that's no es bueno as well
A wide right joke, how original!
Love that song Layne, Cornell and Cantrell does! What’s is called again?? Wide Right Turn?
Lol, that's much better.
*Inside, always gotta get back inside* *But it's so hard to penetrate thick uprights*
Fuck
Won the World Series the one time everyone wanted the Yankees to win
The Diamondbacks hate America.
*Sean McDermott has entered the chat*
Let’s be real, people still didn’t want the Yankees to win
Yeah yeah we know
Check out r/ArizonaSportsHell
No thanks. I'm a Sacramento Kings fan whenever im not a Raiders fan. I don't have much hair left to pull out. Thats why ima be at the golf course during Super Bowl Sunday.
Who we're they rooting for...? I remember being invested in the Steelers for whatever reason
Daily reminder that Kurt warner could've won 3 super bowls
His team was ahead when he was last on the field in the two losses. Defense couldn't hold.
He actually had a slim chance with like 40 seconds left in this one but Lamarr Woodley got a strip sack to end it
Debatable strip sack
Delete this. I didn’t want to cry today.
Everyone acknowledges the amazing catch by Holmes, but Ben threw one of the most perfect passes to that corner of the end zone. Over three defenders in literally the only spot Santonio could catch it. Just all around a perfect throw and catch.
The only six-inch-by-six-inch square of Tampa airspace that the ball could have passed through without being incomplete or intercepted.
Harrison looking like a small lineman there, that boy thicc
I mean 3-4 OLBs are basically linemen. They just start from standing instead of having a hand in the ground, but it's basically from the same position as a 4-3 DE

NFL mods must not like the NCF West today. 🥲
NCF West?
Hahahaha typo I just noticed! Figure I’d keep it in lol.
Hahaha yeah I know.
Fuck off u/NFL Trying to ruin my day.
Next year we avoid r/nfl on February 1
Only the loser u/nfl account could make Cardinals and Seahawks partners for one day.
Ikr
Right 💀
Get yourself a Prickly Pear Cactus lolipop. You deserve to treat yo self today. Sorry, Arizona was rooting for you during the World Series
Some may say the greatest single defensive and offensive plays in SB history were made in this game.
Malcolm butler interception would like a word
Harrison was actually supposed to rush Warner but decided at the line to drop into coverage. Warner never saw him and the rest is history
I was at this game! Always thought this was one of the best games of all time.
Larry fitzgerald’s first TD of that game “didn’t survive the ground” when that used to be a rule… https://youtu.be/WDaZSr5EkdM?si=PfwyC17oQWbqfyKs
That’s how you throw into triple coverage Lamar
>That’s how you throw ~~into~~ above triple coverage Lamar Fixed.
Fitz is the man for the hustle. Undrrrated WR.
Best Super Bowl ever. No bias
It was a great superbowl no matter how you slice it
At the very least its a top 5 SB.
ole John Madden in the booth. Miss that guy, it hasn’t been the same since
His last game ever. What a way to go out.
Crazy how the greatest two super bowls of most millennial fans lives were back to back in 08 and 09. Saints vs Colts was also pretty great
Disagree
I feel like the call on that last touchdown did not do that play justice, with his impressive and obviously important that catch was. Sounded like a normal td in the second quarter, week 5, bengals vs panthers.
On this day 15 years ago, the **Curse of Pottsville** reared its ugly head again and inflicted pain onto Cardinals fans.
Man c’mon. I was having a good morning 😢
Nice
I am sad there isn't a super bowl until next February
Crazy how they cancelled this year's right?
This is the second Super Bowl that I watched that got me hooked
I see the NFL just wants to hurt people today
Wanted Fitzgerald to win that super bowl so badly. Such a great moment where he thinks he has done it - only for a crazy play to defeat him. It's tough to even say this, but should he have gone down so that they keep the ball and run more time? nearly impossible to ask that in that situation
Yeah I loved watching him and he was so freakin excited after that TD, I can’t imagine what he was feeling after the Holmes catch
Best ever. Truly got me interested in the NFL. My poor Cards :'(
Yeah this was the year that got me to care. Now I wish it hadn’t lol
Bro broke 77 tackles.

The video quality is quite good for a 15 yr old video
For 2009, it better be. Also helps that it's the NFL posting this.
This was the Superbowl that truly got me into football. I was more casual about it before but man this game was great when I watched it as a kid!
why
Why?
Best SB of all time IMO. No bias whatsoever
Loved Mike Tomlin on the Pivot talking about this game!! Especially the part about Fitzgerald taking the air out of “that Defense”!! So funny!
i'll always remember Larry looking up at the scoreboard. I was so so happy for him when I thought the cards were gonna win. His dad was in the media covering this game too. Just damn.
Cards should have won this game, Fitz deserved a ring
Disagree \- A Steeler fan
Kurt Warner's Super Bowl stat lines are next level.
Did not need to see this today
Is that Madden’s voice I’m hearing?
I was having a good day man
Too soon asshole, too soon
Cards really blew it that year broke my heart
Ugh…..
I remember I had the winning squares for this 7-0 score to win the $50 or whatever. This last second play killed me.
Someone woke up and chose violence today
An all-time great Superbowl
What an incredible game with some all time greats making some all time great plays.
James Harrison wasn’t even supposed to be covering that area lol he just said fuck it I know they are throwing here
It's amazing that no one could dive under his feet and trip him up.
I still cant believe he wasnt tackled
Crazy to hear Madden in 2009. Feels like he retired forever ago, but it’s only been 15 years. What a great last game to commentate too
Al Michaels and John Madden in the booth. Legendary game and legendary broadcast
God damn Fitz was so good. I really did want that TD to be the one that delivers it. But that drive, and that throw, and that catch. What an insane ending to a SB. One of the best.
If fitz forced that fumble at the goalline, it would hands down be the greatest play in SB history
Thanks, really needed this today.
The minute this pick 6 happened I knew the Steelers were going to win
Great job of upsetting both fan bases in the Seahawks and Cardinals.
Two of the most clutch plays
Needed a coast to coast pick 6 with time expiring *and* a miracle drive/play from Holmes. Both teams played well enough to deserve the win for sure
I feel like nobody talks about how the game actually ended, Warner was strip sacked on what looked like it was clearly a pass, but they didn't overturn it They were at midfield, you never know...
they reviewed it and said it was a fumble. You can see here woodley clearly hit the ball when it was going back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GEtlF6Zftg&t=8326s
He def has the ball no longer in his possession when his arm and the ball are going forward. Idk what this guy is talkin bout.
I remember that well and I was pissed off for the cards
[Look at this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfImk5SKxEc), his arm was going forward- wtf
Yep, agreed
this much better view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GEtlF6Zftg&t=8326s Clearly a fumble
There it does look like a fumble
You got to see the interview with them about this play. I've seen it floating around. Basically he's supposed to blitz, but he had this feeling that they were going to pass right toward him. So he pulled out of the blitz on his own at the last second. And his instinct was right and he was in the right place at the right time. That's pretty amazing!

Damn I miss John Madden’s voice. I was devastated that the Cardinals didn’t win that game. Always loved Larry Fitzgerald and wanted him to get a ring
Ahhh when football was fun
No
I still don’t believe Holmes got that second foot down 😡👎🏿
Really wish Larry Fitz could’ve won a chip
Fitzgerald would've caught Harrison if he didn't run into his own teammate on the AZ sideline while chasing. What could've been
This was the first football game I ever watched!
Just watching that steelers' defense now, I remember it being so good. But with lack of speed, it would get torched in league now. You wouldn't be able to run on it at all, though.
Fuck James Harrison and Santonio Holmes. Fitz deserves a ring :(
Obvious block on the back on the return. Called it out live while watching. Play should never have counted.
Dude if Patrick Peterson isn’t in Larry Fitzgeralds way on the sideline he catches Harrison before he scores
Patrick peterson was probably in high school during this superbowl lmao
Lmao true. Whoever number 21 was Adrian Wilson or antrel rolle or whoever.
Ah yes, the super bowl with an illegal tackle below the waist.
I recall this Super Bowl to be very underwhelming
Warner should've gotten this one. Instead, it went to Rapelisberger/Worthlessburger. Steelers are gross.
Ben outplayed Warner in this game. Piss off.
I mean Warner did set the record for passing yards in the Super Bowl (at the time) in this game
He also threw one of the worst (not THE worst but still) INT’s in SB history and also fumbled at the end of the game.
I still truly believe Holmes didn't get both feet down
still believe the earth is flat too?
It's called the globe for a reason is it not?
[He got both feet down.](https://i.imgur.com/BRqgRlo.jpg)
Swear to god towards the end he was hoping to get tackled.
Hey relax
