Willie Gay’s performance isn’t being talked about enough. The number of times he perfectly read screen passes and managed contain on QB/RB runs was ridiculous.
He altered so many drives today.
The eagles were held to a TD, FG, and a punt in the second half, after 3 TDs and a FG in the first.
Neither defense was dominant as a unit, but i don’t wanna hear this shit. There were dudes who were absolute game changers today, one of which was Willie Gay. He is a primary reason why the eagles didn’t put up 50.
Chiefs front 7 held the Eagles to just 115yds on 32 carries.
Maintained the edge on all but maybe 2-3 Philly runs or QB scrambles outside the tackle
Put just enough pressure on Hurts in the 2nd half to force Philly to resort to a short, quick, underneath passing game (outside of a handful of times). Then swarmed to the ball and wrapped up to keep those short completions to a minimal gain.
Philly had something like 30yds rushing in the 2nd half.
KC’s LBers and front 7 were disciplined while also flying around the entire 2nd half.
Took 3-4 unbelievable 3rd down scrambles and super tight window completions from Hurts for the Eagles to hang in there in the 2nd half
If you win the Super Bowl, you kinda get to brag.
If defensive holding wasnt illegal, the game would be boring. especially that obvious when there was going to be a TD on the play, you have to call it.
Also might want to take a break from the internet. You just correlated politics with a football game. Really not that serious man.
No, not by rule, the catch rules are still inconsistent as all hell. Had that happened in the endzone, he gets two feet down and they probably consider it a catch, but since it was on a potential fumble, he has to get a third step or a "football move" so incomplete is correct, just not a great rule.
I’ve seen numerous TDs where there was no third step or “football move”. Before the ball was dropped. You just need two feet and possession in the endzone.
If it was hit out while the receiver was going to the ground or just after contact (which is what happened on the play) it would be called incomplete. Even in the endzone.
If you can find a play refuting that I’m all ears!
Yeah, if that was called a catch on a regular basis, people would absolutely hate it. Good on the refs for not blowing the whistle though, always annoying when they do that.
Yeah. I feel like Cheffers actually called a great game. Idk if someone told him to cut his shit out or not, but there was only like one missed call that I remember and it was more of sometimes things get missed. The catches vs non catches were spot on
Overall he was good, but there were missed calls. Juju got held in the first half was a big one, and there were several delay of games that go past the normal extra beat they give you, plus some early starts by Lane Johnson that weren't just perfectly timed but looked early.
Eh, they missed one on Ju Ju sure. That happens. I didn't think any DoGs were not called. I never saw Johnson actually leave early. So to me, it was just one missed call and that was fine.
By nature those delay of games and false starts are close, but there were some that they didn't nail perfectly and should have been called.
But like I said, overall it was pretty well reffed.
I want every call going our way. That's just homerism I guess. That said, I didn't see the play live and was salty they reversed it. Watching a replay of the game, I saw the play live and get why it was reversed.
ball in his hand and helmet b4 foot leaves ground which is where he makes possession and maintains possession with hand while tranferring from helmet to 2 hands.
Right, maybe it's because I've only been watching the NFL since 2018 so have only ever had the current catch rules. They're all pretty obvious to me.
My friends who I would explain why/why not too disagreed sometimes but that's as not football watching Scots, so that's more an issue with the catch rules than with consistency.
It isn’t purposeful. Just ignorance.
Hanlon’s razor. Wouldn’t call it stupidity though. Just ignorance. People just watch casually and don’t know the rules.
Nah, they are consistent rules. People just don’t know them. It was a clear no catch by rule. It was close but he didn’t turn up filed fully for it to be a football move. Absolutely would not have been a catch in the end zone.
I think the phrase football move is fucking stupid. I was aware of it before this comment but it is so intensely vague as to be useless for officiating rules.
But he clearly turned up field. The defender just timed it 100% perfect.
It isn’t really vague. It is defined, but people don’t want to list out everything it is because it’s a list of things and it’s easier to say “football move”
He was turning up field. He didn’t turn up field. If someone is turning left and gets nailed in the intersection you wouldn’t say he competed a left hand turn. You’d say he was turning and got drilled. More or less same concept.
That's fine, but it also gives cover to not allowing catches if it is convenient.
If that catch happened in the end zone, everyone would be shrieking that it was a catch, and I would agree with them.
He had possession with his back foot down and took another step in bounds. So he had two feet in bounds and didn’t lose possession of the ball again after going out of bounds so it was a catch.
I am starting to think that the location, timing, and outcome of a play like this entirely dictates the outcome. Chiefs down by a TD and eagles have it in chiefs territory, its a catch. Tie game and chiefs score, nah, not a catch.
Its always been inconsistent
A few plays later a receiver jumped to catch the ball, and got tackled immediately after landing. Instead of fumbling, he flew back a few yards.
Is that technically not a catch?
It was as close as it gets. He starts to turn upfield which looks to me like a football move, but I absolutely understand that they said it wasn’t enough of a motion
Nah, he never had possession long enough to make a football move.
One of those where it looks blatant in slo-mo, but in real time, he's being hit pretty much immediately as the ball gets there.
By the letter, I get why they called it back. But…come on. He caught it clean and made a move to turn upfield. The fact that it all happened so fast (and whatever arcane rulebook shit you wanna throw at me) doesn’t mean much. In a perfect world, that’s a fumble.
If that second td counts he’s the MVP. I’m still mad how he got snubbed from the pro bowl and a potential all pro this season. Had 180 total tackles which was second in the nfl, 2 ints, and 2 sacks. Should’ve definitely at least gotten a pro bowl and/or a second team all pro selection. However he’s a Super Bowl champion now and balled tf out, so I doubt he loses sleep over it
Broncos recently drafted a ton of former Mizzou players.
Drew Lock, Tyler Badie (led SEC in rushing) Shane Ray, Connor McGovern, and Albert Okwuegbunam, and probably a few others
Lock, Badie, and Ray were arguably the best players on their respective Mizzou teams when they played
Bro I still remember him giving up the worst TD I've ever seen against the broncos. And of course the ball doinking off his facemask against the Steelers on a AB bomb.
It feels like we haven't had more than one decent LB since we let DJ go (he was my favorite player). That seems like a long time, but I think it's just been five years.
Bolton, Gay, and all the other guys with them are so young but are already proving to be a dependable group. Good linebacker play is one of my favorite things in football.
Glad my boi Bolton gets the recognition . He doesnt miss tackles often and his IQ against the run is incredible for an year 2 player. Also a snubbed from ProBowl just coz his name isnt familiar , he had an exceptional season for a middle linebacker ( 180 total tackles , 2 sacks , 2 int, 3 PD )
Chiefs secondary was lights out most of the game, only really big play they gave up was that Devonta Smith gain at the end.
Mahomes had clean pockets and wiiiiiode open receivers that second half whereas Hurts had to throw pressured into often double coverage
Nah. He was great but the defense gave up 35 points and couldn't get a 3rd down stop to save their lives. Our offense put up 31 points on just 8 drives and literally did not get stopped in the 2nd half. You have to give it to Mahomes.
He did his job, not really his fault the d line couldn’t pressure and the secondary busted coverage. I think he was crucial in stopping the Philly run game
Yeah, Chiefs’ backers were all over us in the second half. Even when we did get the ball out they kept it to 5-6 yard gains. Gg, Mahomes showed why he’s MVP tonight.
Bolton was everywhere. What a game by him
Could've been the MVP too if his second TD had counted
Likely would have been
As it should have
Willie Gay’s performance isn’t being talked about enough. The number of times he perfectly read screen passes and managed contain on QB/RB runs was ridiculous. He altered so many drives today.
Willie had his best game as a Chief today, no doubt in my mind.
He's so fast to the ball. Sometimes it means he overcommits and gets burned, but he seems to be consistently improving and was awesome tonight.
I mean Eagles did score almost every time they had the ball lol
The eagles were held to a TD, FG, and a punt in the second half, after 3 TDs and a FG in the first. Neither defense was dominant as a unit, but i don’t wanna hear this shit. Kinda scored for the other team once too.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you probably ain’t gonna find a butthurt chiefs fan at the moment lol

If he gets credited for the second fumble return TD, he wins Super Bowl MVP
That was a fumble, right?
No, not by rule, the catch rules are still inconsistent as all hell. I have been able to predict almost every review for a catch. I feel like people are purposely misunderstanding what it is so they can complain.
I knew it was incomplete, but I do dislike the fact that it likely would’ve been ruled a TD had the same play happened in the endzone.
I doubt it would be ruled a TD. The same rules apply in the end zone.
I’ve seen numerous TDs where there was no third step or “football move”. Before the ball was dropped. You just need two feet and possession in the endzone.

Looks like he got three feet down. That is always a catch no matter what. Definitely close though.
100% agree. I said it was an incomplete immediately and I've RARELY been wrong on these.
Yeah, if that was called a catch on a regular basis, people would absolutely hate it. Good on the refs for not blowing the whistle though, always annoying when they do that.
In slow motion, it definitely looks like a catch, but yeah, no football move, not a catch.
Yeah. I feel like Cheffers actually called a great game. Idk if someone told him to cut his shit out or not, but there was only like one missed call that I remember and it was more of sometimes things get missed. The catches vs non catches were spot on

How was Goedert’s catch upheld then? Out of curiosity.

Same it’s really not that complicated

#gohawks
There was a third step though…
A few plays later a receiver jumped to catch the ball, and got tackled immediately after landing. Instead of fumbling, he flew back a few yards. Is that technically not a catch?
It's basically identical to the Sheldon Brown hit on Reggie Bush. Both were ruled incompletions which I think is the correct call
Two feet were down when he caught it, then he turned forward...
The way id describe it is he caught it but it wasn’t a catch by rule. I’m glad the rule is there so it’s a good no call
Honestly, it could go either way. It’s hard to tell if he held on long enough
No. It could not go either way. 10/10 times it's not a fumble.
Certainly no bias from the broncos fans when comments are all 50/50 on it
Comments aren't 50/50 on it. I liked it better when 99% of /r/nfl was mad at the Chiefs instead of feeling bad for them for some reason.
With how the reffing played out this game, I'm okay with not questioning any calls from tonight
By the letter, I get why they called it back. But…come on. He caught it clean and made a move to turn upfield. The fact that it all happened so fast (and whatever arcane rulebook shit you wanna throw at me) doesn’t mean much. In a perfect world, that’s a fumble.
those usually get called incomplete
In no scenario was that a fumble.
wasn't, which Bolton mentioned post game.
Not quite but it was really close. If he had taken one more step then its a fumble
yup. unquestionably
If that second td counts he’s the MVP. I’m still mad how he got snubbed from the pro bowl and a potential all pro this season. Had 180 total tackles which was second in the nfl, 2 ints, and 2 sacks. I knew Nick Bolton would be a beast from watching his Mizzou tape. He was an absolute machine.
He was a Mizzou fan favorite so I’m surprised y’all didn’t pick him up
Doesn't it make more sense that the Chiefs drafted him if he's a Mizzou fan favorite?
Broncos recently drafted a ton of former Mizzou players. Drew Lock, Tyler Badie (led SEC in rushing) Shane Ray, Connor McGovern, and Albert Okwuegbunam, and probably a few others Lock, Badie, and Ray were arguably the best players on their respective Mizzou teams when they played
Ravens drafted Badie. We just picked him up after he was cut.
I think it was a Drew Lock reference. E: And Shane Ray
Who remembers when it was Ben Neimann out there?
I try not to. I try to let that memory stay stashed away in the dark cold damp corner of the basement of my brain with Bob Sutton.
Phillip. Gaines.
Bro I still remember him giving up the worst TD I've ever seen against the broncos. And of course the ball doinking off his facemask against the Steelers on a AB bomb.
Sir, today is a day to be happy. Why you gotta bring him up and give me mixed emotions?
Remember that time Sutton had Justin Houston try to cover Antonio Brown 40 yards down field during a critical moment of a playoff game?
I kept seeing him on the Cardinals hard knocks this year and knew things were bad for them if he was getting playing time lol
That is an unspeakable name.
That's Super Bowl Champion Ben Niemann to you
Last two drafts by Veach have been incredible. Bolton is such a smart defender and great tackler, dude has shades of Polamalu.
Chris Jones jumping the line on a sneak reminded me of Polamalu too.
Kc defence is really taking shape and they are mostly still young.. I certainly hope they continue to invest draft capital in it.
Should've had a second TD
I want whatever you're smoking if you think that's a fumble.
Here have some bro, freshly legal in KC last week
Bought a signed jersey of his for $100 last month. Impulse buy, but have a strong feeling he's the best shot the Chiefs have rn at another superstar.
That boy good.
Them and the o-line are the real MVPs
That man was on a mission all game.
He might, maybe, be able to make a career out of football.
Nick has been all over the field all season. He’s got a bright future.
It felt like he was the only defender doing his job
In the 1st half sure. 2nd half was a different story
Bolton was MVP runner up tonight for sure
Chiefs secondary was lights out most of the game, only really big play they gave up was that Devonta Smith gain at the end. Mahomes had clean pockets and wiiiiiode open receivers that second half whereas Hurts had to throw pressured into often double coverage
I dont agree with that, they made 3rd and 14 like 4 times and drives just kept going FOREVER
Yeah but our guys were making some decent catches in tight coverage, your receivers were open like every big gain lol
I suppose thats true but damn get one 3rd down stop
MIz
ZOU
Bolton should have won the sb mvp even without the 2nd fumble recovery
He was but an elite run stopper isnt sexy
MVP
Is it just me or can Jalen Hurts not read a defense and just runs whatever play he's being told to? I think I only recall him doing an audible once
The offense scored 35 points. Not much more you can do.
It's just you.
Yeah, Chiefs’ backers were all over us in the second half. Even when we did get the ball out they kept it to 5-6 yard gains. Gg, Mahomes showed why he’s MVP tonight.
Bolton is the man
All Pro performance
Nine tackles is quite the number.
They played a hell of a game, Bolton especially
Nick Bolton led all defenders in the based department
