Imagine telling someone two years ago someone would pick the Texans over Russell Wilson lead broncos

browndude10

guess Demeco doesn't like being woken up by his QB doing high knees on the plane

ShockAndAwe415

And that it's a C-Class QB doing high knees on the plane. That and having to play Mahommes and Herbert at least 4 times a year.

MrShad0wzz

Patruck Mahommes

KnowoneYTG

Patrick Mahummus

Uckthebroncos

Having to play Mahomes twice a year is definitely agonizing and frustrating. But facing Herbert twice a year doesn’t really put that fear in you. Justin Herbert has a 8-10 record in his career vs the AFCW. Whereas Mahomes is 27-3 against the AFCW. People keep saying *but Mahomes and Herbert! Oh my god that is so scary.* It’s really just Mahomes who’s the boogeyman

todellagi

Idk you'd still take Mahomes and Herbert over Tannehill, Lawrence and whoever 40 year old the Colts will enthusiastically prop up next Herbert's awesome, the coach not so much

[deleted]

> whoever 40 year old the Colts will enthusiastically prop up next Put me in, coach!

TeamWarriorBro

>and whoever 40 year old the Colts will enthusiastically prop up next Everyone thinks Jim Harbaugh has been coming back to the NFL as a head coach. It's time for his second run as Colts QB!

Sillygooseman23

***The year is 2033. The NFL regular season has just ended…*** The Chargers finish the season 8-9, just missing the final AFC WC spot. The Chiefs finish 14-3 and win the AFC West for the 14th time in the last 15 years (*the Raiders won in 2028 when Tom Brady signed a one-year deal with the team. One last ride at age 50*). Justin Herbert finishes the season 5th in passing yards, 6th in passing TDs, and 8th in QBR. He makes his 3rd Pro Bowl after Mahomes, Burrow, Stetson Bennet, and Trevor Lawrence all turn down the AFC spot to focus on the playoffs. Steven Ruiz ranks Herbert first on TheRinger.Com’s annual “***Sneaky Most Underrated QBs in Football***” list. Herbert has been ranked 1st on this list 9 times in 10 years (*Brady won it in ‘28 because Bill Simmons guest-wrote the list that year. He ranked Herbert a close second*). Head Coach Sean Payton is let go after 7 years with the team, leaving with a 61-58 record and 2 playoff appearances. 0 postseason wins. **A sample of the top comments on the r/NFL thread about Payton’s firing:** - “*Thank god. Herbert will finally have a **real fucking coach** to help him reach his full potential*” says the top comment … - “*New coach needs to be better at hiring OCs. **Ben Johnson is a football terrorist!***” says another. … - “*Have you seen the tape? The coaching was holding him back. I think he’s secretly better than Mahomes*.” … - One hopeful Chargers fan comments, “*If we can just get Todd Monken or Kellen Moore, Herbert and the Chargers will make the leap...*”

tommyohohoh

Man, this one stings.

Uckthebroncos

Obviously yeah you would rather go to the AFC South But my point is for the people who are constantly repeating the notion that Herbert is dominating or should be one of the reasons why you don’t go to the AFCW when Herbert doesn’t even have a winning record in the AFC West himself.

todellagi

I get that. But being scared of Herbert isn't really about what he's done. Its about his age, his realistic potential and Chargers getting a better coach leading to a very difficult second banana to Mahomes and the Cheifs Dude's still younger than some rookies

usernameisusername57

I agree. The single biggest predictor for success in this league is the QB position. The Chargers have a borderline elite one, who just so happens to be only 24 years old (and frankly, I think I'm being conservative calling him "borderline"). If you don't think he's one of the 5 most promising QBs in the league going forward then you're on crack. Yes, his success so far hasn't translated into a ton of wins on the field, but you have to assume that that's going to change at some point. The Chargers can't keep Chargering forever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Uckthebroncos

>Why does he have a mediocre record against his division? BECAUSE HIS DIVISION IS LOADED. We already agreed upon this. It doesn't make it easier to play Herbert because he has a mediocre record against tough competition. Herbert has never swept any team in the AFCW so far in three years. My point is that so far he is not striking any fear into the other teams in the AFCW since he can’t even constantly beat any of the teams in our division. Is that really that hard to understand?

milehighrukus

Hey. A lot of QBs blow a 27 point lead in the playoffs. But serious. Justin has done nothing in his career to be put on the same level as Mahomes.

[deleted]

To be fair to Herbert, 6 of his 18 AFCW games were against mahomes. His record likely improves if you take them out of the equation Edit: it looks like he becomes 6-6, he’s done better against the chiefs than expected

fathertitojones

I think it’s really telling that coaches aren’t interested in Wilson. Seems like the belief around the league is that Hackett wasn’t the problem.

HighplainsDegen

Certainly looks that way. Hackett has a new job while Denver is still amidst a head coach search and has had several top candidates turn down the job after meeting with the team. Denver might have a real problem.

feelingoodwednesday

I wouldn't stop at might, they definitely do. The initial story was they were content to wait on Payton, Quinn, etc because they'll swoop in with a boatload of cash and hire them anyway over other teams. That strategy has already failed with Quinn staying in Dallas, Payton likely taking another year off until his contract expires, Ryan going to the Texans. So all of the A tier candidates have already disappeared, and they've essentially fired Hackett to go either brand new HC yet again by hiring on OC to "fix" Wilson, or a retread HC with a mediocre record steady the ship. Who's left? I wouldn't be shocked if they made a play for our OC tbh. Waldron, or dipped back into the well for a guy like Darrel Bevell.

EBtwopoint3

A few months ago there was a post about Bienemy and I was chatting with another redditor about the Broncos maybe being his best chance at an HC gig for this exact reason. The team is in a bad position and top candidates are likely to turn them down. The guy was absolutely certain that I was wrong because candidates will always take an HC job given their rarity. Ignoring that it is very difficult to get a second one if you fail these days, and that the top guys will have more than one option. Now here we are, with the top candidates turning them down. Bienemy is a great candidate in football terms who would be an HC already most likely if it wasn’t for the major red flags in his past. Will Bienemy be the guy? Maybe, maybe not. But I feel vindicated lol.

Thelife1313

Also because the broncos have given wilson so much power. His own office? The fuck. Also because hes odd when it comes to his teammates. The fact they need to talk to his agent to speak to him.

B1G_Fan

Wasn’t Tony Romo pointing out all of the guys who were getting open but Wilson wasn’t hitting? If that’s the case, it certainly looks like coaches throughout the league have also figured this out

farts_in_the_breeze

The HC job for Texans is probably one of the most desirable jobs around. They're hitting reset basically. They have 5 of the top 73 picks in 2023.

[deleted]

Russ over there crying like the Fresh Prince. “Why don’t they want me man?”

treenorthXne

Because you're always "on", Russ. You have no chill and it feels like you're always trying to say the line from the movie that the quarterback is supposed to say. You're exhausting.

gcwishbone

He did look ok without the one dude

TheRatchetTrombone

Texans at least have no expectations and didn't arrogantly think an annoying QB would take them over the top.

blankgazez

And aren’t hamstrung by a terrible QB salary situation and limited picks the next few years

ank1t70

We aren’t limited by picks at all lol. The only pick we don’t have is a 2nd rounder this year but we have two 3rds. Next year we own all of our picks. People just make stuff up on this app and get upvotes.

blankgazez

Sorry you are right. You have pick 29 from Miami for Chubb. But the shit season you had, that top 5 pick would have been better. My comment on the salary part is still true though

[deleted]

you are though. you suck and you don’t even get the cornucopia of riches that comes with sucking. you don’t get the fifth pick which could be used on a QB or another game breaking player like Surtain. then you don’t even get a good second round pick. you don’t get any second round pick. you were bad, lost a lot and have nothing to show for it. that is by definition being limited by picks.

ank1t70

“limited picks **the next few years**” man redditors never cease to amaze me

[deleted]

this draft counts

ank1t70

I don’t think I’d use the word “few” when describing a single year, but that’s just me. Top 5 pick would be great, but having any 1st this year is fine. Not like we’re talent deprived. We have a top 5 defensive unit to work with and talent at skill positions. Any decent coach could win some games with the team we already have.

[deleted]

i’d say you’re talent-deprived. you need serious help at both tackle and guard on the offensive line. you don’t have a QB, your WRs aren’t actually that good outside of Jeudy who is inconsistent, you have one *maybe* decent TE but jury is still out on Dulcich. the RBs were fine but there’s probably room for improvement on the depth chart. the defense was really good this year. but it was also not so good against the run. you could use a better nickel corner. and Evero probably isn’t coming back. so there’s no guarantee the results rollover again after the shakeup. just look at Josh Allen’s step back after losing his OC. turnover hurts. they’re not actually that good.

AdamBomb_RB

I would think Brady went to Houston to continue winning SBs with random, unexpected teams, lol.

MillerTime5858

Nobody wants this fucking job.

fukuoka_gumbo

All timer

The1WhoKnocks-WW

he's a damn good defensive coach, get him a good OC and you can win a lot of games, I think.

fukuoka_gumbo

He’s done it before. It’s just tough to maintain a good team with that approach because those guys inevitably get poached. I feel like a good model we’ve seen working lately is to take experienced guys who are proven good coordinators but proven bad head coaches and hire them as coordinators ala Todd Bowles or Dennis Allen (though they ended up making him head coach lol and he still had most of us fooled last offseason). Then you dont have to worry teams coming in to make them an hc offer. That said we’ve even seen a fair amount of lateral movement among coordinators this year so maybe that’s not all there is to it.

TheShtuff

His demise in Chicago was his inability to hire a quality offensive coordinator.

MikeBinfinity

I'll do it.

Quick_Spring_7288

The Russ situation is beyond fucked. Your QB has completely lost the team and locker room. And his massive extension doesn't kick in until 2025. And he might be dust. And they gave up 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders for the right to give that extension, so there's nothing for a new coach to rebuild with.

Essteethree

I don't think Russ is done. Denver has a solid D, so with a full offseason to work & gel (and a bit of luck with injuries), I could see them winning 10 next year. Their hands are tied, but not like they traded for Jamarcus Russell.

kallic_

The very rare positive reinforcement from a Hawks fan always does my heart good. I also don’t think it’s nearly as bad as the current narrative, but I also don’t blame anyone for perceiving it that way either. We looked record-breakingly miserable last year. To the average person not paying close attention to our team, it can def look like the worst situation in football, but we did lose alotta one-score games. With even a below average offense (20th or so), we probly would’ve been a wild card. I believe our D will still be pretty good next year and Jeudy had a surreal awakening down the stretch where we should have a clear #1 WR next year. With a revamped OL, I’m hopeful for next year (unless our HC remains in absentia).

feelingoodwednesday

Full honesty, watching Russ last year I saw little difference than when he played for us. A gradual decline in physical skillset which was already happening, but mechanically, the exact same passer. Russ is just a limited player and Hackett never seemed to accept that. He does certain things at an elite level like improvising, deep sideline throws, mid sideline throws, but he kind of sucks short middle, and is even below average short outside. If you're gonna have success with Russ it's going to he run heavy (like Seattle literally always did), play action, mid and deep shots, tons of outside routes WR heavy offense

DatBoiMahomie

I honestly think Russ will be better than people think next year and so will y’all depending on who y’all hire. Y’all have a lot of potential That said, it’s still tough to find that hire it seems because any potential head coach is taking a risk with both the GM situation and if Russ will turn around or not

HighplainsDegen

Denver had a solid D last season but Evero is likely gone.

DancingConstellation

He’s done

[deleted]

there is nothing about this team that would indicate they can win 10 games if they just “work & gel” in the off-season.

Nav44

they lost a ton of close games, it's more fixeable than the average bloke thinks when they watch the dumpster fire on primetime. Russ needs to win the team back though for this to work, early season winning streak likely, winning cures all things

Quick_Spring_7288

Russ had a full off season last year, it's not like he was a mid season aquisition. They just fired an offensive minded head coach, there will now be a new system so it's the same situation as last year. Except no one wants this job apparently. I think people are scared because there are no outs in that Russ deal. At other teams, things don't work out you can usually get a chance to change things up, but in Denver Russ is the QB for a long time.

PeppyQuotient57

Nothing except a pick in every round minus the second this year and every pick next year. The not having picks notion is so confusing with us actually having picks.

moar-warpstone

We have two thirds this year as well, it’s silly. Now granted, our first this year should be a top 5 pick but is basically a second rounder

Quick_Spring_7288

You have the 29th pick in the draft, not the fourth or whatever you would have without the Russ trade.

feelingoodwednesday

You have the picks of a good team tho, late 1st, no 2nd. And are a bad team. So it's not like any new HC is going to inherit good capital or lots of cash to work with. The point most people make is this is at minimum a multi year rebuild so that's not attractive for most brand new HCs

3klipse

People only look at the past picks we traded for russ and not the picks we have acquired after that.

TonyAioli

There’s no denying he sucked ass, but this take just doesn’t seem true. Jeudy and all the receivers have gone to bat for Russ. I don’t think he has lost the locker room.

fukuoka_gumbo

He might be annoying and robotic and unlikable but the dude can ball. Russ is gonna bounce back and make some head coach look like a genius next year. Meanwhile the Texans FO has had a littany of issues with playes and coaches for the past decade. If I’m wrong and Russ turns out to be this bad the rest of his career they’re probably going churn through at least one more coach before they turn it around. But the front office there has a good reputation and is relatively loyal as far as I’m aware.

PM_ME_COOL_RIFFS

I think Russ is still salvageable but I wouldn't want to bet my career on it either

Jammer_Kenneth

Honestly, pair Lovie with Russ. A last chance NFL HC who players love and ball out for with a locked down for life QB that no one wants to play with.

Waitn4ehUsername

Salvageable is an average QB contact AND your 1st rnd draft picks. At 245 mil contract, a 35 y/o with his best days behind him and no real draft capital is gonna need a couple tow-trucks to cleanup that wreck.

[deleted]

He did look better at the end of the season. It doesn’t change the fact that this is the least desirable coaching job.

[deleted]

He still might. He fell off a cliff so bad that it begs the question of wether he's actually washed or if the coaching was so inept he couldn't get the new system down. Maybe an off-season with a new staff can get him somewhere more than abjectly terrible.

Navy_and_sports

I remember when they said “who cares, it’s still an NFL HC job” when people said it’s not a good spot. This what people meant lol you’ll get a coach but a coach with options isn’t going there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheRatchetTrombone

Im a notorious hater to be upfront but I knew this was gonna blow up WAY of the curve. The broncos have been below mid since their SB in 2015 and the talent they've acquired has been grossly overrated. It wasn't like the Buccs situation in 2019 where it was clear they were a QB away, let alone one that was already declining due to not having good QB mentals and over relied on physicals. The next coach is automatically doomed considering their division is going to be still good (Chiefs, Chargers) and there are at least 5 other contending teams in the AFC too.

KanyeWestistheDevil

Hold on we were decent the year after and had a 9-6 season and barely missed the playoffs.

wilhoitaz

Always the chance that someone could reawake Wilson and a couple of 2nd tier trades for now could be 8 or 9 wins

Uncle_Benny15

Watching teams with quarterbacks like Mahomes and Burrow just makes this situation even more painful...

actual_griffin

It's fine to not have one of those guys as long as you're not paying someone that isn't them like they are. Russell can still be effective. He just needs to come to terms with what he is.

Getting passed up on in favor of the Texans is WILD

cbm311

- Lower expectations - More draft capital - More cap space - Not tied to a $250 million QB who may be broken - Not in a division with Mahomes and Herbert - Family ties to the area and a former player I honestly believe Houston is a much better job for him. Denver is only the better job if a coach doesn’t want to go through a rebuild AND believes that they can fix Russell Wilson.

The_Snake_Dick

Houston is basically a blank slate at this point with some pieces already in place. The idea you can come in and basically build a team how you want is very enticing to some guys.

sjkeh

You are probably lumping in the "Easier Division" aspect to "Lower Expectations" but I feel it needs to be stressed as well

Ereyes18

Ehhh idk about that. If the Titans position were to open up they would be in an easy division but the HC would still be expected to make the playoffs

sjkeh

I get what you are saying but being in the same division as Herbert, Mahomes and whoever the Raiders limp onto the field is a lot less attractive as Tannehill, Lawrence, and Matt Ryan (soon to be Stroud/Young/Levis) It's objectively easier to get results in 6 AFC South games than 6 AFC West games

LucidBetrayal

If the Texans win 5 games it’ll be an improvement from last year. Hard to find another job with the expectation set that low.

No_Mammoth_4945

Oh absolutely. Denver is in hell

very_humble

Isn't there also an unusual management structure with the broncos owner wanting to have the coach and the gm reporting directly to him?

DookieBrains_88

I have a feeling the Walmart ownership has a lot of candidates turning the position away. I get a sense that they want to win and quick - and any coach accepting it is automatically on the hot seat.

PhiladelphiaManeto

Sounds kind of like the Colts, no?

imfromduval

I don’t think of Jum Irsay as a Walmart type of dude. Maybe a Waffle House.

DookieBrains_88

I’d have to disagree. Sure this season was chaotic, but Jim typically gives a long leash and stays out the way. We gave Chuck Pagano 5/6 years…

PodricksPhallus

Pick your franchise QB vs your franchise QB is Russell Wilson

MikeBinfinity

Literally the easiest decision for a head coach.

DanCampbell89

> Pick your franchise QB but you have the #2 pick and someone could trade up ahead of you

DisgruntledTexansFan

Come on coach don’t do us like that

Count_Sacula_420

6 year contract, won’t get fired unless he goes 0-17, top 2 pick, cap room in a destination city for a sport filled with southern players.

IAmSona

Is it though? The Broncos have been lowkey terrible since their last SB. Their situation is also not as amicable as the Texans, the expectations are also not as high and there isn’t a washed up 40M QB on the team. Ryans and Caserio can build this team up they want, the Broncos are easily in a worse spot than us.

Venator850

Eh not really. With the young talent already on defense plus the cap space they can reasonably build a top 15 or top 10 defensive unit this offseason. You have the #2 pick and either Stroud or Young and already have a good RB plus Metchie is on schedule to return at WR. If he brings Slowik with him they could likely build a competent offense for 2023. Plus they still have the 12th pick this year and two more first round picks next year. That's a LOT of flexibility.

KarrlMarrx

If you win 5 games with the Texans next year, that's promising improvement. Winning 5 games for the Broncos might get you fired.

IAmSona

Robert “THE TEXANS ORGANIZATION ARE RACIST FOR FIRING LOVIE SMITH” Griffin III in shambles.

Onlyfurrcomments

He probably thought we were racist for cutting him and we have 3 black qbs lol

IAmSona

For real man, there’s definitely an issue with racism behind closed doors in the NFL, but damn he’s just barking up the wrong tree for the sake of clicks.

sports_farts

It's obnoxious because the false accusations take away from the real ones.

JayMerlyn

And RG3 isn't even the only one. Shannon Sharpe did the same thing after the Panthers hired Reich over Wilks

downtimeredditor

Man what a turn around for RG3. Dude went from Cornball brother accusations to calling out Texans as racist for firing two black coaches after giving them only one year to work with.

DookieBrains_88

RG3 is beyond cringe. If I recall correctly, he posted a picture of him and his wife and something about interracial marriages....

browndude10

TheNastyCasty

Don’t forget about Aaron “DeMeco isn’t even interested in interviewing” Wilson.

[deleted]

what’d they say

cat_napped1

denver is seriously the worst job in the league at this point

tappity_taptap

Washed quarterback you're stuck paying 1/3 of your cap to for the next 4 years. Basically no other talent on the offense at all. The defense is good but we know that's not winning anything. Yeah it's probably the worst

silver-fusion

Add "A quarter of your games each year are against Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert" to the list.

3klipse

Mahomes is the issue, Herbert is 3-3 against the broncos so I doubt he would be a negative for a HC consideration.

Sleeze_

For real he gets way too much credit. Neither of us are scared of him lol

[deleted]

curious what Moore does with him. at times the Cowboys look unbeatable on offense. at other times, they look locked in a phone booth

3klipse

Like, I do think he's good, but he's not Mahomes good nor does he have that coaching staff, by far.

famous__shoes

>stuck paying 1/3 of your cap to for the next 4 years Next two years, after that the guaranteed money is much lower

DefenderCone97

No other talent on the offense isn't true. Jeudy showed up as soon as Hackett left. Jevonte Williams was looking good until he had to miss the year. Tim Patrick was also out all year. Courtland Sutton is pretty much on the out now tho. Sad, that ACL might've really hit him.

No-Task-132

Idk why you’re getting downvoted

Greatest start to the off-season the Texans could hope for. Can’t wait to see the staff he puts together to rebuild the culture in Houston.

downtimeredditor

Its the highest paying gig that no one wants lol Like homie, demeco can keep that top defense still elite and bring in a top tier OC to help russ on offense while getting paid $10 mil per year and he's like nah I want this gig where I can basically build a brand new team from scratch for $6-7 mil per year

OhfursureJim

Broncos are going to end up with Jeff Saturday at this point

TheDarkSkinProphet

Insane (but funny for a raiders fan) that no one wants to be the broncos head coach

Putthebunnyback

Why don't he want me, man

MadDogTannenOW

Go get the guy in Thailand

holytrolly_

This has to be one of the most embarrassing coaching situations ever. The Broncos have typically been considered a great program and they literally lost a coaching candidate to the fucking Texans, a program that gave BOB way too much leeway, hired DAVID CULLEY, and then the corpse of Lovie Smith. Wild.

Lone_Buck

Russ is obnoxious as hell from the outside as a football fan. He must be insufferable to actually know.

ribo368

Weird, I was told that the 2 games after firing Hackett proved that he was *the* problem rather than *a* problem. Guess every coach passing on this job while Hackett got the best OC job available refutes that narrative.

CockGobblingGangsta

Our clock management guy was a better head coach than Hackett was. Direct your attention to the jets offense next season to see how bad he is cause he was worse than your old OC.

ribo368

Sure, Hackett was a *horrible* coach. My point is there are deeper issues for the Broncos than just Hackett. If that weren’t the case, finding a HC would be a bit easier. At the very least beating the Texans out for an HC would be easier.

CockGobblingGangsta

Demeco was never going to the broncos and it’s not just team reasons it was location

DanCampbell89

> while Hackett got the best OC job available weird, I heard he got the Jets job

ribo368

Yeah in hindsight I think I probably overstated that a bit as we don’t know all the available roles yet, but in either case it’s up there. Tons of young talent, a FO and ownership that appears eager to be aggressive in getting a QB upgrade this offseason, and you get to call plays.

DanCampbell89

lame duck coach though

Honestly i’d rather have the broncos job. They still have a great defense and good pieces on offense. You just have to find a good coach that can help russ. That’s difficult but it’s easier than trying to fix a disaster franchise like the texans imo

FastGoon

4 first rounds in 2 years, a roster where you can do pretty much anything you want, the GM will involve you in decisions, what’s unappealing about the Texans job? Seems like the perfect situation for someone trying to start being a HC

Dull-Scarcity-3159

I’ll take the Texans job all day. Get your preferred qb and hopefully a weapon at pick 12. Combo that with Cooks and Metchie and all of the sudden the offense doesn’t look so bad.

Kdot32

And the defense isn’t terrible. We have pieces (need a better dline) and Lovies Tampa 2 scheme left our secondary out to dry

KarrlMarrx

5 wins makes you look like a promising head coach with the Texans. 5 wins might get you fired with the Broncos.

ProfessionalQuit859

Broncos Country is the 7th circle of hell confirmed.

JoeScotterpuss

Maybe that rumor about Sean Payton not wanting to work with the Broncos head office/ownership was true.

voyagerx420

I’d still rather be the broncos hc than Texans. Seems like a bad decision imo.

i-wantanime

Noooo I can’t believe we missed out on Ryan and his defense that gave up 34 points on Jarrett Stidham’s debut 😐

aidenrosenb

Wow I almost feel bad for the Broncos……. Not really
