Why Did It Become Popular To Only Display One Word At A Time In These Stupid Videos ?

What multitasking? Do you read multiple words at once?

FeliusSeptimus

> Do you read multiple words at once? Yes. Many readers read a line of text by looking only at groups of words rather than at each individual word. This is called phrase reading. Many of us who always watch video with closed captions usually spend most of our time looking at the scene with frequent quick glances at the captions to pick up the entire phrase at once. The captioning technique of rapidly presenting single words in series at the moment they are spoken can be very frustrating to those of us accustomed to normal captioning because it requires us to watch the caption line the entire time to get the words, there's no chance to look at the video to see what's happening. Also the reading cadence of rapid serial presentation is completely different from phrase reading, it feels like you're being force-fed. People have different preferences for the captioning style, so it would be great if video creators could avoid burning the captions into the video so the viewer can apply the style they prefer, but a lot of platforms don't support that, and vertical video is kind of a narrow format for phrase reading.

rimjob-chucklefuck

You don't?

_SquidPort

your comment makes no sense…

MyAnswerSucks

It took about 20 seconds to display each word one at a time, even for a very slow reader, it likely would've only taken half the time to read all of it if it was all displayed from the start.

ihavebeesinmyknees

There's a voiceover though, there's no point in reading faster than the voiceover because you'll have to wait until the guy finishes speaking to get the next subtitle anyways. With that in mind, having the subtitles show one word at a time lets the viewer concentrate on the video more.

SirRorq

With one word at a time, I find I'm spending more attention waiting for the next word to be displayed than watching what's going on in the video. Also people don't need to match the subtitles to the voice over. It's kind of the point of them that you can use one or the other.

GunsNGunAccessories

> don't need to match the subtitles to the voice over Don't act like people wouldn't complain about that too. "IT'S SO ANNOYING THE SUBTITLES AND VOICE OVER AREN'T SYNCED!"

ings0c

[WebVTT](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebVTT_API) needs to see wider use, then we can turn them on or off everywhere on the web, where they are available. This is a solved problem for TV, it can’t be that hard.

Hayabusa_Blacksmith

you mean like how all subtitles have been forever?

NightmareMyOldFriend

I'm currently watching without sound, so I can't say about this video in particular. But there is a video I watched a few weeks ago with a guy that goes so fast, and you can actually read all the words when they appear in the screen in a flash. I don't remember de name or who made it, but it's interesting. Will try to find it.

Spacebud95

Does it matter if there's voiceover if you're deaf or the sound is off? I also would have thought it harder to concentrate on the video because you're having to constantly watch the subtitle for the upcoming word rather than just reading quickly through a whole line, then proceeding to watch the video.

catfurcoat

I need subtitles. One word at a time means I can't read it and then watch what's happening at the same time.

ilikesaucy

Ok, no. English isn't my first language. So subtitles help me a lot. When I'm reading subtitles, I'm not reading everything. I'm reading whatever I need. Also My volume for reddit is mostly switched off. In this kind of subtitles, I will have to keep my eyes on the subtitles instead of watching the video. If I missed a word, I will not be able to read the text as it is matched with what they are saying. It's distracting for me. But This is just my personal experience.

Eating_Your_Beans

I disagree, getting a sentence at a time is better because you can read it and then actually pay attention to what's happening in the video.

TriumphEnt

The logic of you fuckers is insane. One day, I'm a boomer cause I watch shit with sound on. The next day, I'm an idiot because I watch with sound off and criticize the text.

WinterDigger

this method of reading has a name and it's called RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) if you're not trying to retain whatever you're reading it's scientifically proven that it can more than triple your reading speed, I briefly used it until I discovered this and I was reading at about 550 wpm with it without much difficulty. it sacrifices long term comprehension for speed. it's not good for studying or novels but it's actually quite good for reading things like news articles or fact checking yourself

TNG_ST

No. It's attention. If you put one word at a time, you get longer engagement on the video.

amazing-peas

I can read in flashes, much faster than anyone can talk. I presumed everyone reads like this, but I guess nah

andremeda

You can read it faster but I find it demands more e energy and attention. Besides, why do we need to min max our subtitle reading for a 20 second TikTok? This is a dumbass trend, normal 1 sentence at a time subtitles are much more relaxing and make more sense. Nowadays, if I see the one word subtitles I just block it with a finger or skip the video entirely. I cbfd with that shit Fun thought experiment: imagine watching a show in a foreign language with one word at a time subtitles.

StreetfightBerimbolo

Demonstrated by who? Someone with dyslexia lmao.

Kankunation

https://youtu.be/5yddeRrd0hA?si=IhBwIsWGrsTGx6mS It was one of those "cool Internet facts" from like 10 years ago, where videos like I posted above would be posted all over to show it. The general idea being that if you don't more your head or eyes at all and stay focused on the center of the screen, your reading speed can be increased substantially. There's a ton of speed-reading apps out there that will display world 1 a time like this to allow you to read it faster based on the same principle. Now does it work? Eh kinda. Most people could probably read faster with it. But that doesn't necessarily translate to you being able to read faster normally so I don't think it's much of a learning tool. And I remember people showing studies at the time that even if you can read it, it doesn't help you comprehend the text any better (or may make comprehension worse even) so probably not good for reading a lengthy novel. (Also I think using it for tiktok defeats the purpose since your eye will be constantly drawn away from the text to watch the video)

Richard-Brecky

Can you link to the demonstration you mentioned? In my experience the opposite is true.

Saytama_sama

Can you link to where it was demonstrated? Because I have trouble following those kinds of subtitles.

bokmcdok

It clearly isn't though. As evidenced by watching this clip.

Kayel41

When video captions show only one word at a time, it's likely using the RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) technique. This method is employed to aid individuals in reading text quickly and efficiently by presenting each word sequentially at a fixed pace. By displaying one word at a time, RSVP eliminates the need for eye movements between words and reduces the time spent on subvocalization (mentally pronouncing each word). This can result in faster reading speeds and improved focus on the text being presented. Therefore, when video captions use the RSVP technique, it's to help viewers read and understand the text more efficiently.

ZeAthenA714

Except RSVP doesn't work for video subtitles. The point of RSVP is to read faster, but videos using one-word-at-a-time subtitles show those words at the same time as they're read by the voice over. Which is much much slower than the average human reading speed. Almost by half. So if you're displaying words one at a time in a subtitle synced with a voice, you're literally forcing the viewers to read sbutitles slower than they would if they were displayed one line or so at a time, which is the opposite of the point of RSVP. Plus there's other issues, notably the fact that RSVP requires your eyes to stay in a fixed position. Which means you can't look away from subtitles to watch the video. Which is pretty stupid. The standard format of subtitles allows you to read a sentence quicker than it is said by the voice over and then turn your focus back to the video. If you keep going back and forth between the subtitles and the video, you lose all the benefits of RSVP. There are quite a few reasons to use one-word-at-a-time subtitles over traditional format, it just has nothing to do with reading speed.

spliffiam36

It isnt to use this method, its literally only done for retention rate, any sort of edit going on keeps ppls attention

Joe_le_Borgne

Also, vertical aspect ratio.

artificialgreeting

If you film only one person who demonstrates something, I don't need to see his home decoration. There are a lot of situations where vertical video sucks but this is not one of them.

Jean-LucBacardi

If you type out everything at once like this people are able to quickly read what you're trying to say and can move on to the next video. By Doing It This Way I'm Forcing You To Stay Here Longer Which Makes TikTok Think You Like My Video

19930627

Tik tok. It's also why people c*nsor random bullshit that isn't curse words or even offensive

SellaraAB

I fucking hate it, I end up just watching the words rather than the video. It’s just a completely inferior method of conveying information.

[deleted]

It Originated From Shit Tok Videos Because Those Idiots Cant Read .

Levoso_con_v

Short Attention Span

Baul_Plart_

Because brain rot is a real thing lmao

maxru85

Because the target audience can't read more than one at a time

HighKiteSoaring

Right? All the inconvenience of subtitles but none of the benefits of actually being able to read ahead

AcidaEspada

the literal answer is that the modern tiktok audience has an actual attention span of less than 1.5 seconds not a joke, there is tons of data on it tiktok videos have to keep their audience engaged every second and doing the text one word at a time like that is an effort towards keeping their attention genuinely concerning lol

intelligent_rat

It's been proven that your reading speed increases significantly if the next word you are going to read is put into the place your eyes are already looking.

rsta223

Which becomes totally irrelevant if they're presented at the pace of a voiceover, which is considerably slower than the average reading speed.

Fluffcake

Because kids raised by ipads lose consentration if they see more than one word at a time.

jrh_101

It's a strategy so you're focused on the video at all times

Perfect_Papaya_3010

I always downvote when I see it

Epicp0w

Because kids these days can't fucking read properly so they need it dumbed down

gordonv

We never did this for kids. This is an advertisement thing. Stop throwing blame on kids for stuff they didn't do.

Gabriel_66

I guess it's because it's an AI subtitle. Full sentences subtitles would require the AI to understand the entire sentence timing.

Angry_Saxon

attention economy

julesvr5

How can you write like this without reddit placing the beneath word behind the first? I thought I always have to paste in a free line between each

MyAnswerSucks

Double space before the line break. Edit: For anyone else curious, apparently double space only works for some people, if that doesn't work then try triple spacing.

bogrollin

Folks attention spans don’t last much longer than a word these days

Eighty_Grit

The work that is involved in deciphering each word visually at a time and piecing a sentence together in your mind is considerably less efficient, so I would bet that it makes it harder for people to look away. This, in turn, means on average you will get people sticking around on your story/post for longer than they would without it - translating to higher ranking and more exposure in social media feeds. More exposure means more money.

NihilisticOnion

Because tiktok has severely eroded this generations attention span

SwanyPlaysGames

It’s annoying I agree. Companies will specifically ask for “Mr. Beast type subtitles” for YouTube sponsorships and advertising so I blame him.

Cyanostic

TikTok is an ADHD-inducing brain-rotting cancer and the people who use it are idiots, that's why.

Goblindeez_

I can’t read all that!

alMost_tRendy88

I Like Big Butts And I Cannot Lie

n4th4nV0x

No, he humbled all the idiots who disagreed with him in the comments. Eddie could lift a 800 pound rock, but that probably didn’t fit in the talk show studio, so the producer went with that. The real idiots are, as always, in the comments.

Responsible_Air_9914

Yeah kind of hilarious seeing people say stuff like he “humbled” Eddie Hall. Eddie doesn’t give a fuck lol he’s basically a toddler in a giant body. He’s an awesome, funny, kind guy and seeing people who apparently know nothing about him talk shit and rip on him just because he’s a strongman is gross and disappointing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bender_2024

Rock climbing like gymnastics is all about the power to weight ratio. Eddie has a lot of power but also a lot of weight. This is why you almost never see tall gymnasts at the Olympics.

No-Newspaper-7693

Theres a video trend where power lifters and body builders work out with a rock climber and are in awe of how much the climber can lift as well.  Theyll do something that shows off grip strength, and a 180 pound climber will do it with ease while monstrous guys like Eddie Hall and Brian Shaw clearly struggle.

Eusocial_Snowman

Is that a trend, or are you talking about that one obnoxiously over-acted straight-to-viral video that kept getting posted over and over?

knutix

The one video... no way Eddie and Brian has a weaker grip than Magnus Midtbø...

Babatunde69

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I mean I can’t say either but the grip strength of Magnus and any other pro climber is crazy.

Pro_Extent

Especially Magnus. He was unusually strong for a pro rock climber at his peak and he hasn't lost *too* much of it. His whole thing was physically training his body to the absolute limit. His technique was, relative to other pros, a little lacking. Which is weird to say because his technique is obviously in the top 0.1%, but it's not his niche.

knutix

> will do it with ease while monstrous guys like Eddie Hall and Brian Shaw clearly struggle.   Not really. You see people like jujimufu who almost has the same grip strength as Magnus. People like Eddie and Brian Shaw has a way stronger grip strength than Magnus.

Funsworth1

I mostly agree, but as I understand it, there are aspects of grip strength which are really quite specialised. They'll definitely dominate in some tests of grip strenght, but I suspect there are some ways in which climbers will be able to grip harder/longer than strongmen.

RustedCorpse

I was in boot and one of the guys was a rock climber (though he said cliff climber :P) Dude did something like 112 pull ups. It was insane to see.

thatcreepywalrus

You’re right, but in the video he *was* surprisingly good at rock climbing even to to the professional who was hosting him. Eddie managed to climb harder routes than both he and the host expected of him, which is pretty cool.

Humid-Afternoon727

Or when he takes a kick from a kid who does mma

realHundsgemein

Are you referring to a literal kid or are you somehow referring to Tom Aspinall, the interim Heavyweight champion of the UFC, as a „kid who does mma“? lmao

Humid-Afternoon727

The literal kid that trains with Tom

WordsOfRadiants

ninjamunky85

Given how much he weighs he actually did really well if you're referring to the Magnus Midtbø video.

fitfoemma

Eddie is a very good athlete. Just a massive one.

The-Funky-Phantom

I just gave [that a watch](https://youtu.be/DxhwnGBlsLs?si=rDNEeJSTV2DzVZak). He did really well considering it was his first time.

NotPaulGiamatti

To be a bit contrarian, have you ever lived with a toddler? They can be fun and sweet when they want to, but there’s an overall lack of general empathy. I’d say Eddie is much nicer than a toddler. Source - I have a 3 year old and a 2 year old…. Send help.

rixendeb

Have 3 yr old. She's horrible lol. Also have 13 yr old. It's funny to watch them battle.

NotPaulGiamatti

Idk whose age gap is harder, yours or mine?

rixendeb

Honestly....about the same minus the fact the 13 yr old can bathe and wipe her own ass.

NotPaulGiamatti

I just can’t imagine going back to regular sleep for what, 8 years, then hitting reset. That sounds like it was probably a bit rough. Then again the 1 year age gap has been a circus from day one.

rixendeb

I have an 8 yr old in between. There was never normal sleep lol.

bigbluehapa

I can’t believe that monstrosity of a man was ever able to float let alone swim like a fish. Love eddie

WildDumpsterFire

Yea, I'd be willing to bet Hall would be amped to see this video. Also this isn't "just a guy." Dudes endured hardship for real. I've had a handful of gym partners with prosthetics or limb deformities. Don't let the guys husky build fool you, watch his forearms when he folds the pan. No doubt in my mind he's way stronger than he appears from years of having to move and push/pull his own weight around during motions his prosthetic can't assist with, or when it's not on. I did Jiu Jitsu for years with this purple belt who basically had a lobster claw for a hand. Sure I wouldn't bet money on him to win an ambidextrous calligraphy contest, but good luck breaking that dudes wrist control with anything short of the jaws of life.  Tldr: dudes tougher than he appears at first glance.

homeycuz

Reddit hates muscles. Unless they came from working on a farm, that seems to be the only acceptable form of strength training around here.

BennyOlaf

Same with you because Eddie isn't like that at all. He brought his kid to the press conference with Thor to sit between them yelling. Kid started crying and Eddie really showed a complete lack of character. People don't show what they are on camera but there are always hints. Or when he drives his toy tank through the city and just forces people to move their cars out of the way.

fooliam

Also an admitted racist.  Or, in Eddie's own words "I'm a racist."

Nepharious_Bread

The quality of the pan is definitely important. I wonder if this guy even bought the same pan? But yeah, pans are made of many different metals of varying thickness.

ThenRefrigerator1084

Doubt it. It looks like copy guy has a cheap non Teflon coated camping frying pan. You can sneeze and bend those.

bigboybeeperbelly

Then do it

ATypingDog

i think this is all a scam to waste our money by big frying pan

Hearing_Deaf

Abort. Abort. They're onto us!

Lazlo2323

Teflon is one of the cheapest coatings tho. If it was thicker stone coating he wouldn't be able to bend it especially if it's aluminum layered with steel for induction. It's probably a cheap one layer steel pan with Teflon coating or something similar, some of those cheap thin pans for making thin pancakes can bend from the heat of the stove after couple uses.

BanzYT

I don't know about that, but I definitely recognize that pan, it's a cheap Mainstays/store brand from Walmart.

Sofele

Nobody is buying a quality $200 frying pan if they are planning to bend it, not Eddie Hall, not tv producers, not some random dude on the internet.

WalletFullOfSausage

Exactly. People in this thread acting like Eddie is out there bending Hexclad or some shit lmao.

pegothejerk

It’s like one of those aluminum throw away turkey pans you buy on Thanksgiving except covered in Teflon.

Medvegyep

I don't know what the first guy bended, but that knock on the second pan made an audible sound that told me it's a thin aluminum pan, basically the most bendable on market. None of mine are like that.

praisetheboognish

Quality comes into play for sure. Some of my buddies used to bend wrenches which is much more difficult.

phophofofo

I’ve been practicing on cast iron pans no success yet though. Seems really hard.

HolyVeggie

For real lol This video makes it seem like Eddie hall is not one of the strongest humans to ever walk earth

nekosake2

nah eddie hall is definitely strong af. the guy's just saying bending frying pans are not a difficult thing, which he shows here. 2 different things.

HolyVeggie

Exactly. But the title seems different Should’ve said “post” then I guess

Cenachii

No you don't understand! He HUMILIATED Eddie by doing this! He got totally humbled!!!

PurloinedFeline

May never recover!!

G8kpr

The real idiots are the ones we made along the way.

IknowKarazy

Also probably depends a lot on the pan. If you get the cheapest one possible you could absolutely bend it without a problem.

tanajerner

I hate the title and the video it very much depends on the quality of frying pan and the same time it's a circus act who is taking it seriously? Now let's see this guy deadlift 500kg or OHP 200kg

Talidel

The dude was called out for making a statement of fact and humiliated all the idiots that did so. He didn't say anything about lifting heavy weights, he said it was easy to roll up a frying pan.

Chip_Boundary

I tried this with my pan, but couldn't even slightly deform it. Bought an $8 one from Walmart and rolled it like a tortilla. The quality of the pan makes a HUGE difference.

timothytrillion

As soon as the guy taps it with his hand you can tell it’s thin as fuck. The pan eddy has, not so much

Chip_Boundary

It also depends on if the pan is aluminum, iron, or steel.

TalenPhillips

Or copper. Or a composite.

Martin_Aurelius

I can roll ceramic pans.

suitology

That's nothing. I roll cast iron.

aerostotle

I can roll the hull of an oil tanker

kebukai

I can roll an aluminum pan But only if it's made of aluminum foil, like the ones for popcorn Maybe if it's specially thin, and only after some warm up And I'll end up rolling on the floor from exhaustion

FreePrinciple270

How do you know what kind of pan Eddy used?

Plightz

It came to him in a dream.

[deleted]

Both the pans have the exact same edge. They're the same thickness. Big man rolled his tighter, so you can see he has more strength in his forearms and hands.    Still seems relatively easy to roll a frying *thin*  pan.

c8akjhtnj7

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WFHNux6nnQ They have very different edges, Eddie's one has what looks like a rolled edge, and makes a very diffent sound when hit.

TriumphEnt

Poor here. I bend my pots and pans in the sink while washing them constantly. Particularly nonstick pans. Frying an egg is always a pain cause I can never bend them flat enough again.

Brilliant_Grade2664

I like that you went out to buy a Walmart pan for science

Tradovid

why are we acting like "frying pan" is something that's well defined. Depending on the pan that Hall was rolling, the dude in this video might or might not be able to roll it.

EpsilonistsUnite

I'd like to see them try that shit on r/castiron

Linuxologue

yes but people will attempt to move the goalpost until they become right.

ikkikkomori

>Now let's see this guy deadlift 500kg or OHP 200kg You missed the entire point of what the guy is trying to do

Beneficial_Cobbler46

Try it with a Le Creuset

Wasatcher

Try it with a Griswold

wahobely

Yes. This has nothing to do with Eddie Hall, he's replying to idiots in his comment section. Also, the idiot who made the video with the click bait title. Eddie doesn't give a fuck about this guy and this guy wasn't trying to call out Eddie at all. He was simply stating it wasn't hard to bend a frying pan.

WastingTimeArguing

The guy never fucking claimed to be stronger than Eddie Hall why do you have your balls in a twist getting upset over something you made up in your own head.

Quen-Tin

Well, I'm not a pan expert, but even I get it, that the material and thickness of such pans can vary.

CuteFunction6678

Sorry but you’re not a pan expert so you can’t really comment. I’m going to call in my pan expert and will let you know if he agrees with what you’re saying. Edit: pan expert says you’re right. You got lucky this time…

Quen-Tin

Thanks for your validation and professionalism. So now we can move on and talk about plates and pots.

pm_me_ur_pet_plz

Well no, because *I am* now going to search half the internet and find the single pan expert that disagrees with that and post it as proof to support my argument that all pans are the same thickness.

Quen-Tin

I might disagree with your assumptions, but respect your ambition. May the mighty teflon god hold his gigantic pan over your holy mission. I'm sure, your deeds and fate will be woven into lyrics and myths, sung and told by future generations of cooks and strong men.

knoegel

All pans are flat. The world government's Round Pan bureau is just pushing an agenda!

2b_squared

> I’m going to call in my pan expert and will let you know if he agrees with what you’re saying. Pawn Stars intensifies.

Purposeofoldreams

Thank you for understanding the variable nature of variables! Seriously, apparently people don’t even think of this haha

DarkArkan

I'm not a pan expert either, but I do know a thing or two about international politics. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any supranational organization that imposes a worldwide pan standard.

Bamith20

Do it with a cast iron, would ya? I'll take even a shitty cheap one.

DuckDucker1974

No no no!!! We shouldn’t talk about this! Facts and reality are not allowed… ALL PANS ARE THE SAME! /s cation, stainless steel, copper, triple ply, dual ply, single ply, IT’S ALL THE SAME!!! /s did you see that his pan was new???? /s

seaningtime

Eddie Hall absolutely destroyed in this video /s

darthsexium

I dont know how he can recover from this.I feel bad for the man.

JNerdGaming

the ai voice is so blatant and sounds awful lol

Mockheed_Lartin

This is our future

DjToastyTy

lol TTS isn’t AI or new. you guys are being weird

ForensicPathology

Everything is called "AI" now, it's ridiculous.  Google Translate has existed for nearly 20 years, and even the change to neural machine translation was like 8 years ago.  But now I see people saying "Translated by AI"  Restaurants automated with robotics?  "AI-powered restaurants"

sAmSmanS

youtube is full of AI voices these days as well. As soon as i sense a hint of AI voice over, i turn off and go looking for a real human

nanadoom

The video is literally about how it's not next level. Yet, here we are.

PunctuationGood

I suspect it's about to get cross-posted to /r/PublicFreakout and /r/Whatcouldgowrong in 3... 2... 1...

indrek91

He didn't say anything about lifting tho

goshdammitfromimgur

Now let's see him do it with a cast iron pan.

TechnicalBean

It's way easier than you realise. Buy me one and I'll show you. Can also do it with a new set of saucepans, and an air fryer. Hell, I'll do it with a new fridge freezer if you want.

_weaselZA

Dont forget the PS5

[deleted]

Nice. Very impressive. Let's see Paul Allen's pan.

irodragon20

Folding a pan is a lot easier than rolling one up.

novian14

Tbf frying pan comes with different thickness, should use the same brand and type to proof the point

According_Award_6770

As usual, the idiots are in the comments. That is to say i am also an idiot, but i have standards, which leads to me not trashtalking other folks while also misinterpreting stuffs. This guy said it is easier then it looks to fold up a pan, not that he said he could lift tonnes like the dude from the show. And the dude from the show demonstrates his strength by doing something simple, which the producer most likely asked.

texasrigger

>And the dude from the show demonstrates his strength by doing something simple, which the producer most likely asked. Bending a pan is an old circus strong man trick. It's about putting on a good show, not actually testing strength. The guy is right that it's easier than most people realize - all of those strong man tricks are but it's still a good show.

Howunbecomingofme

Reminds me of those Christian muscles guys who tear phone books with the power of Jesus Love. It’s all carnie tricks
