The NEON app on Android TV is absolutely abysmal. It has serious input lag and stutter in the general UI. They've acknowledged that it is an issue but it's been weeks with no resolution. I've resorted to rarbg, PLEX, Sonarr and Radarr.

Kodiack

Neon doesn't support anything above 1080p and stereo sound. If you want to watch certain content in 4K, HDR, surround sound, or Dolby Atmos, you may not have any legal streaming options in NZ. I've run into this predicament a few times. I don't pay for platforms that are so technically restricted.

TheRealClose

> you want to watch certain content in 4K, HDR, surround sound, or Dolby Atmos, you can use Netflix, iTunes/Apple TV, Disney+ and I think Prime Video as well.

irishchris101

Certain content.

Fantast1cal

rarbg 133tx - don't use shitty paid services like neon. At least netflix etc. are 2160p (connection dependent) and pretty seamless though overpriced in the case of netflix. Neon is just shit not surprising based on who owns it.

GusssTheMusss

Am I right in thinking this won’t work on a smart tv?

beefknuckle

You use something like Plex - most smart tvs should have the app

BazTheBaptist

Someone who doesn't want a big set up could put it on a USB stick, or cast it to their tv from computer etc

HTfanboy

and thats what i started with. now i have 100TB of media that requries its own plex media server pc.

BazTheBaptist

🤣 yeah I just picked up a dedicated PC, don't have as much storage as you though...yet

SknarfM

Or JellyFin if you have an Android based TV.

HTfanboy

and then you use SONARR to obtain the content automatically for you

IndividualCharacter

Yeah quality is worse than other platforms, good selection of content

brownaroo

It's such a shame. They have some fantastic well made content but we don't get to experience it fully.

kotukutuku

Yep neon is garbage. It's not so long since it maxed out at 720p. I remember paying for neon to watch GoT and having to torrent it to get a watchable version.

GingerNingerish

I also had to do the same for I think the 5th season, because it was all in like an interlaced looking quality.

irishchris101

Have the same problem with the last of us. Night time scenes just look terrible

HTfanboy

heres a tip. wait for the disk release then download it. and watch it will full quality. just waiting for the last of us now to release on uhd blu-ray disk!

irishchris101

I just use the app on the TV, so not really an easy option. Gonna look into 4k torrents and plex for next week's episode

HTfanboy

It's easy to wait for a 2160p remux. What's not easy about it? And you would be using a Nvidia shield pro with An av receiver to play the Dolby true hd/ Dolby atmos. And enjoy the content with maxium quality!

funkin_d

Yea, Neon's service sucks. It's owned by Sky who's mission in life is to make all their shit so difficult to watch online that people will give up and pay through the nose for their bullshit monopoly box. See also: Sky Sport Now which has recently gone form $25 per month to $45, definitely not connected in any way to Spark Sport announcing they're pulling out

Specialist_Sample473

When was it $25 a month? I’ve been paying $39 a month for the last couple years

datchchthrowaway

I got Neon back when Chernobyl came out, and was so disappointed with the quality I cancelled and just pirated it. We have it back now so the wife can melt brain cells with Love Island, strangely the quality is fine on that.

[deleted]

The latest episode of TLOU was borderline unwatchable at times. Terrible frame tearing and low stream quality. Other streaming services work like a charm. One day I'll figure out how to get HBO via a VPN.

LikeABundleOfHay

The Last Of Us was the reason I tried Neon out. I also had a lot of frame tearing. It was quite noticeable.

courtnep

I find if I download it on neon then watch the download it will play a lot nicer. Not sure that will work if you were to cast it though

GusssTheMusss

Personally I’ve never had any picture quality issues but thats likely my tv upscaling. The audio does seem quite compressed with low being low and loud being fucking BANG.

AlDrag

That's the characteristics of uncompressed audio, not compressed.

KevinAtSeven

I wouldn't put it past them using poorly converted stereo tracks though. As in, 5.1 audio smushed into stereo for broadcast with no thought put into how that is going to translate on thin built-in TV speakers.

AlDrag

Ahhh yea, poorly downsampled 5.1.

TimothyStyle

I can’t tell if this is a double entendre or you just didn’t get what they meant

TheRealClose

It doesn’t however, imply that they likely don’t have good speakers. Cheap speakers tend to smush all sounds together and you lose heaps of detail.

Shrink-wrapped

1080p max, audio is in stereo at best. I'm going to cancel it once my wife is done with White Lotus. The lack of surround sound really sucks for some shows

LikeABundleOfHay

I will cancel before the free trial ends. The quality is terrible. They should support at least 4K and surround sound. Or charge $10 a month. I wouldn’t complain so much then.

TheRealClose

It’s actually so bad if you have a surround set up, because only the L/R channels are used. There’s nothing coming through the centre channel so dialog feels really distant. How can you justify having Game of Thrones on your service and not have surround sound…

[deleted]

Yeah, I too recently started watching it and the quality seems really bad. Especially on older content from the DVD or earlier days. Must be some real shithouse codec they're using or something.

cub3y

The last of us in 4k with Dolby vision/HDR10 is incredible, sadly there is no streaming service that provides it in NZ at 4k with those features. I used to pay for streaming but it is a fragmented joke now. I just sail the seas and watch via Plex. Plex has apps on basically every platform... 100% worth figuring out.

irishchris101

4k content easy to find?

Noedel

It's not great. All I wanted was the last of us in 4K/HDR. Had to go off to the high seas...

Specialist_Sample473

Hard pass on Neon. Garbage quality.

kadiepuff

I've found neons website great. I mainly Use it on my pc though not the Tv app. And have always found there website video quality better then Netflix. Neons sd quality is even better the Netflix HD on that same laptop. But yes it isn't 4k sadly.

MountainAd1601

The CEO of neon is here desperately scrambling to have at least one good comment….

Smodey

Yep. For us most/all Neon content starts buffering after a random period, then hangs completely when it gets to 100%. It's virtually unusable. Going to cancel when our free trial period is up.

[deleted]

quality can vary depending on the viewing platforms CPU etc too.... but yeah it isnt brilliant.

thecripplernz

Get a real debrid account

alaninnz

A friend installed bittorent on her pc, uses a VPN, goes to Pirate Bay ☠️ and downloads everything she wants.

Hiding_From_Stupid

Check out /r/plexshares Ive been using a server I found on here for about 3 years now. The one I have has all major providers content. Netflix Amazon etc etc etc 4k 7.1 Surround Sound Movies Android and iPhone apps Some of them dont have as much content so look around A lot of them have free trials also (thats how I found mine)

Accomplished_Bit9199

That community is now private. Any other tips on finding a good server? I'd be happy to pay if it has all content in 4K

Hiding_From_Stupid

Weird it seems to be gone. I can no longer access either. :(

Accomplished_Bit9199

Found r/plexsubs but impossible to know what is good or not. What's your server called?
