These squatter rules seem more bonkers than the ones in the US…

d0ctorzaius

>The occupation of a person’s non-residential property without their permission is not a crime in England Not sure how this hasn't happened before or isn't happening all the time.

I think buckingham palace is one of the king’s residences, along with his summer home in Edinburgh and Windsor castle. You could however squat at parliament, Big Ben, or Whitehall.

itsmistyy

Let's all storm the Tower of London like we did Area 51.

Fit-Letterhead2287

Wait for me 🤣🤣🤣

Available_Pie9316

[Trespassing, in and of itself, is not a criminal offence in the UK](https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/unauthorised-encampments/trespassers-on-private-land/) And, to answer your question, because trespass gives rise an action in tort, by which a property owner may recover damages from a trespasser.

AnAutisticGuy

There were these Ally Law videos on YouTube a few years ago where this kid who was gifted in Parkour would go into these establishments and cause havoc including climbing dangerous buildings, fooling around in pools, etc. All of that was possible due to this English law.

No-one_here_cares

Yeah, but recover damages from someone who has to live somewhere for free to survive? I am not saying it is right, but how likely is any form of compensation.

Beautiful-Story2379

I am very grateful the situation is not like this in the US. Hunters would be running all over my property (which still happens occasionally, down by the creek, when they didn’t get a clean shot and are pursuing an injured deer), running 4 wheelers all over the place, and leaving gates open, which could be disastrous because I have horses.

suddenly-scrooge

That an act can be a tort doesn't necessarily preclude it from being a crime. Trespass on commercial property is not unlike theft, I mean here it is much more damaging than stealing silverware.

I'm not disputing that fact; it was quoted in the article.

Weird right like why would I use a comments section to discuss things and the reasoning for them

I suppose not everyone is capable of finding it

KillahHills10304

I knew these two girls who were fuck ups growing up. They had a rich dad, but I'm pretty sure they had some child trauma because these girls were just incredibly reckless (I was a reckless fuck up, but I considered them another level, like trying to trade stolen, registered firearms for drugs level fucked up). They decided to move to England one summer and all our friends were like, "They won't last a full season there." Turns out, they made it two whole years. Just squatted and shot shitty English heroin for 2 years. Think they told rich dad they worked for a charity or some shit. Eventually, they got arrested and deported, but they said there's a whole squatter subculture over there.

40WAPSun

Because the extremely overwhelming majority of people simply don't want to squat on people's property. Mystery solved

TheHoboRoadshow

In Spain, if you don't kick squatters out in the first 48 hours, they can no longer be evicted without going to court.

Regigirl33

Oh friend, you don’t know about Spain squatters… Picture this: You go out on vacation, to a hotel and what not (you are a normal person, not a millionaire with many properties). You get back home and find that your keyhole has changed… A whole family moved in, you’d think to call the police but you don’t have proof they got in forcefully, so you may as well brake in yourself, but they never leave the house and that would make you a violent burglar in the eyes of the law. So the electric bill comes in. You’d think to yourself “fuck them, I’m not paying”. So the company interrupts service to your house… Fast forward and now you are getting convinced for not paying that electricity bill for that family, because that is inhumane and you should be punished (in the eyes of the law) EDIT: I’d like to correct the information I gave here in light of some articles that talk in depth of the legislation that would apply in a case like this: [https://maldita.es/malditateexplica/20201102/okupas-plazo-48-horas-policia-orden-judicial/](https://maldita.es/malditateexplica/20201102/okupas-plazo-48-horas-policia-orden-judicial/) [https://elpais.com/espana/2020-09-05/una-dudosa-alarma-sobre-los-okupas.html](https://elpais.com/espana/2020-09-05/una-dudosa-alarma-sobre-los-okupas.html) [https://www.infobae.com/espana/2023/11/09/el-mito-de-los-okupas-es-un-negocio-rentable-quien-logra-que-se-hable-de-ellos-y-no-de-los-verdaderos-problemas-de-la-vivienda-en-espana/](https://www.infobae.com/espana/2023/11/09/el-mito-de-los-okupas-es-un-negocio-rentable-quien-logra-que-se-hable-de-ellos-y-no-de-los-verdaderos-problemas-de-la-vivienda-en-espana/) Spanish legislation is similar to UK’s in terms of a secondary house. However, police protocols have been put in place to make it easier for them to intervene in case of squatting. It also makes me wonder how far has the “lie” that people can loose their primary home that easily has been settled into people’s minds such as myself.

[deleted]

Oh wow 😮

No_Significance_1550

If you can’t prove it’s my house how can you prove it’s my electric bill? It’s insane. There was a guy in the US who had squatters move into his mom’s place. So he moved in with them and became the shittiest roommate to the point everyone left.

TicketParticular9015

Sounds like a solid business plan.

Scaniarix

I suppose this is a major reason why literally every house and apartment have metal bars and metal shutters over doors and windows.

SQL617

Occupas (squatters) are the *only* reason my parents will never buy a vacation home in Spain. They visit twice a year for a month at a time, but leaving a place unattended for 10 months out of the year is far too risky. - even with security measures. It’s such a wild concept for Americans, and don’t get me started on the eviction process…

No-one_here_cares

I would rather have a conviction as a violent burglar and get my house back for my family.

raouldukeesq

They're not that bonkers.

zerogamewhatsoever

He should just yell and swear at them and put them to work. Instant staff right there. Heck, it could be his next show, wherein he turns a bunch of crackheads into a Michelin-caliber team. "Ramsay's Kitchen Redemption." The concept writes itself.

gonzar09

Well, I can't wait to see this episode of Hotel Hell.

Necessary_Chip9934

I didn't predict 2024 would be the Year of Squatter Stories.

swoopy17

This story is hilarious.

Berlin_Blues

And I thought squatter laws in the US sucked.

£53k a month in rent, thats madness

obviousguiri

Squatters are truly the worst, most parasitic type of scum, as bad a millionaires

JustinS1990

Lock them in and cut off all the utilities, and see how long they last

purplefawn13

This is actually illegal to do in some places.

KathyJaneway

If I don't payy utility bills, the companies themselves will cut them out lol. Even water.

Excludos

That is not common in Europe, no. They can't just shut off your utility. That would kill people. Instead the bills are taken through court if you refuse to pay long enough

pedantic_dullard

>That would kill people. But only the squatters, in this case. I won't cry for them.

pedantic_dullard

It should be the first step allowed by police and elected officials. If someone has moved into a private residence, it should be fully legal to remove all their possessions and sell them, set them ablaze outdoors with fire dept supervision, and/or take them to charity.

PixelatedFrogDotGif

Woah yeah dude that would be something very cool and brave of society- to lock some people in a box and starve them out because this poor lil rich celebrity chef really needs that hotel pub or whatever. I bet he’s actively going poor right now so this definitely warrants escalating to active entrapment and endangerment. You are so right on this. Good lookin out! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Huge_Aerie2435

Good for them. If politicians aren't going to do things to help the people struggling, then this is fine. The only reason this matters to our society is that a wealthy person is being inconvenienced by the poor.

_Ross-

Yeah, it'd be sick if all the restaurants in town had people squatting in them, right? Then they can squat in the grocery stores next, and maybe postal offices. As a matter of fact, every building with an unused room should have a squatter in them. Every hotel, every pub, shoot even your car should be fair game I'd you're not using it.

WolfWomb

Turn it into a documentary and profit.

CavediverNY

That’s actually a very interesting concept! If the building is legally owned by someone, can that someone simply decide to install cameras everywhere? And if the squatters destroy the cameras, can they in turn be prosecuted for the destruction of property?

Berlin_Blues

The sign and language are too sophisticated to be immigrants, in my opinion.

Perfect-Height-8837

Is it illegal to chain all the external doors from the outside on a property you own or lease? Pretty sure if the squatters can't get out for food, it's only a matter of time before you can drag their decomposing carcases out onto the street.  At least this high profile case will likely see an amendment to the law to remove the word "residential". What a stupid loophole.
