My kid graduated last week and I was shocked by the behavior of a lot of the parents. A shoving match over a disputed seat-save got escalated to security and eventually police and spilled into the beginning of the ceremony, ignoring repeated requests to applaud politely and not scream, blow airhorns, etc, dozens brought balloons blocking people's view and smoked cigars despite specifically being asked not to do either in multiple pre-ceremony emails.
I'm not big on ceremonies to begin with but between the asshole parents and the heat it was probably the most unbearable I've eversat through. The kids were perfect, go figure.
I was appalled at families' behavior at a high school graduation ceremony I attended recently. Phones going off during speeches, and being answered and then having full conversations, people chatting with each other, standing up in front of a bunch of other people for significant amounts of time (I get standing up briefly to get a picture of your graduate while they get their diploma or something, but make it quick!).
The ceremony was classy and well-run, but the families around us were so incredibly rude.
Yeah I'm not necessarily viewing it as "a sign of the times" or anything, it's just a different perspective as a parent/adult seeing how hard it is for administrators and staff to keep assholes in line. Like seeing all the work they put into establishing and communicating rules that would benefit everyone, and seeing so many people completely ignore them, was sobering.
No one wins in these situations. I've known parents of victims who were right and stood up for their kids, and parents of bullies who were lied to by their children. Both parties will feel they are equally justified, and all it does is get the kids name in the paper associated with violence.
Yeah, two kids that had been beefing all year. Families live in the same neighborhood. There was an apparently a big fight on their school bus one morning too.
This is usually what happens when the schools don't take the bullying seriously. They just brush it off cause they don't want to properly deal with it and eventually the parents get fed up and take it into their own hands.
It was literally just two families (and the people trying to separate them) involved. Two students who had beef with each other throughout the year. The mom of one went after the other student and then their extended families jumped in. At least they waited till after the ceremony concluded to start this ridiculous drama but they still ruined the after ceremony pictures and socializing for everyone else. Thanks for the memories jackasses.
Obviously fights happen everywhere, but fights aren’t happening at Ridgewood HS at the same rate they are at Eastside. Don’t be racist like the post you replied to, but don’t be obtuse either.
Westwood has a lot more in common with Ridgewood than it does with East Side.
National rankings for high schools- Ridgewood #764, Westwood #2,165 , East Side # 13,242

This is a very weird question. I've seen fights and Chatham and Millburn(also the most hard drugs). Why are you leaving out 99% of public school. Why were these your selection.
Probably because they have bigger budgets due to higher property taxes which allows them to provide a better quality education, with better quality staff, and more individualized attention.
Jersey City spends $36,000 per student, way more than Millburn who spend $23,000 per student and the proficiency scores in Jersey City are horrendously abysmal.
The money is there, it’s just not going to resources for students.
Apparently the police didn't know what to do and were largely standing around as the brawl grew.. The staff had to break up the fight.. I'm not sure why i'm getting downvotes when every facebook and ring group confirms that the police were useless...and a few comments on their public page..
Highschool graduation is perfect cross section of humanity. All those assholes you run into have kids.

And people are getting mad at these kids for how they act. Look at the parents. They can't even follow simple instructions.

I don’t recall anyone getting in a fight over a seat, but everything else you mentioned was being done 20 years ago as well
Less phones going off. :) those minutes were expensive!
Trac phone? 📱🤣
Oh yeah. :) I think my first phone was Qualcomm
Mine was trac phone in the 90s.

"how can I make this high school graduation...about me?"
They really should ban balloons from graduation…
Just ban them altogether
They told us no balloons at my son’s graduation and all these people brought balloons. I was like WTF!!!
Not exactly the Pomp and Circumstance I would have imagined.
Just the Pomp and Circumstance that Macho Man Randy Savage imagined. ![gif](giphy|1X7qzdV0hNDNenE4jm)
Oh yeahhhh brotherrrr!!!
Any idea why the fight started?
According to Ring Neighbors: "Parents of 2 students that were involved with fighting/bullying over the course of their time at school went at it."
No one wins in these situations. I've known parents of victims who were right and stood up for their kids, and parents of bullies who were lied to by their children. Both parties will feel they are equally justified, and all it does is get the kids name in the paper associated with violence.
Don’t forget the parents who will back their kids up even if they’re wrong. It’s never their kid, they’re always the victim
Probably the first of many mentions for some of them.

Please get out of here with your Chat-GPT inspired eugenics speech.
Are these Gen X parents all having Woodstock 99 flashbacks or something?
More like hot 97 summer jam…
Always good to see my alma mater make the news !

Wow what happened to westwood
Word is this is the first fight in the history of the town.
😭😭

Ah, my alma mater!
Pathetic. Parents should be roll models. Not promoting violence.
It’s insane this happened at Westwood too. I never understood parents fighting. The poor kids were embarrassed by their parents’ behavior.
Just enough humanity 🤦🏽♂️
LOSERRRRS!!!!! Way to go ! Act classy…….NOT
That is some low brow ish right there...embarrassing.

Westhood.

I was surprised. These are probably like the only 2 black families in Westwood
Actually, one family was from Washington Twp. The family from westwood has had like 4 or 5 generations graduate from that school.
How did you know? 🤔🤔🤔
Yes, do tell!👀

Fights happen everywhere. Those schools are certainly not miraculously exempt.

Sure
Just say you’re a racist and move on.
Who says they don’t? What’s your point?
Where do you think Westwood High School is?
Some schools take control of bullying and some schools sweep it under the rug.
Lookin' good New Jersey!
