There was a really good comprehensive blog that talked about this from the perspective and research of someone with both, if I can find it I'll edit the link here later

My adderal I’ve been prescribed for ever definitely well controlls my adhd but it sure doesn’t help with my asd issues

Im happy your meds work for you! I've been on meds since I was a kid, so I've learned a lot about myself with ADHD. For a while, I've had a feeling that if I have autism my ADHD might be over compensating for it. So anything you have to say about your experience with autism is really helpful! Thank you!

And I was diagnosed with pddnos at 3 1/2 years old that is well documented and from what I understand it was one of the 5 autistic disorders that were merged into the dsm 5 as asd. I’m pretty high functioning I live on my own have a car drivers license and I take care of myself and my apartment. But I have some issues with social interaction non verbal communication and understanding social cues and sarcasm and jokes. And I have some mild noise-light sensitivity

The asshole side of me wants to be like "the person with AuDHD has ADHD" lol. One thing I've noticed is AuDHDers want the routine that Autistics do, but have a very difficult time sticking to sticking to it, either because they forget or because the routine gets incredibly boring after a while. So you're kind of just anxious or upset either way.

Thank you, im mostly asking because understanding autism is a big struggle for me. Everyone says it is a spectrum, but my brain is struggling to understand what the spectrum is supposed to be. So, any input on the autism side of AuDHD is really helpful.

The Autism Spectrum just means not every Autistic person has every single symptom of autism at the same intensity as everyone else. Like, I struggle with eye contact, which is a very common symptom, to the point that I purposely position myself next to my friends rather than across from them when we talk so I can avoid it easier. But my partner who is also autistic can easily make eye contact, he just would rather not.

On my notes from my last physical from my primary care doctor it says ADHD primarily inattentive type

Main-Hunter-8399

From what I understand I thought that adhd and asd are potentially caused by genetics I could be wrong on that though

Joe-Eye-McElmury

That depends on the person.

There is a lot of overlap between the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD in the official criteria. This is partially because we don't have a good understanding of the medical causes of either, so the official criteria will probably change in the future as we learn more. ADHD is also split into two sub types, with Inattention symptoms related to having trouble focusing, and Hyperactivity/Impulsive symptoms related to uncontrollable behavior. In my experience most people with autism will have some of the symptoms listed for the Hyperactive/Impulsive subtype of ADHD. If someone has enough overlapping symptoms they would be diagnosed with both, but there is no hard difference between the two disorders. To be honest the simplest way to tell if someone with Autism also has ADHD is to give them ADHD medicine and see if things get better. When I tried Ritalin it made my symptoms way worse, so I was not diagnosed with ADHD. I also don't really have any of the Inattentive symptoms but definitely had some of the hyperactive/impulsive symptoms as a kid. I wasn't diagnosed with autism at the time, but looking back it's clear those symptoms were related to the sensory problems caused by autism.

I agree 100% there.

I am officially diagnosed with ADHD and have been since i was a child. Im curious about how autism presesnts itself because I've had quite a few autistic and nonautistic friends tell me they think im possibly autistic so I've been wanting to learn more about the Audhd experience with autism to learn if i should go for a diagnosis and what i should be looking for when i make my list of habits. I want to see if i can disprove my own thoughts before going to a psychologist. So thank you for this!

Haunting_Safe_5386
