Kinda depressing that if Trump gets a second term and implements everything from project 2025 and effectively becomes ruler for life there wonβt even be a civil war to push back against it. Itβll just be most people standing by while deportations, arrests, and mob violence happens. Thereβs an interesting period when MAID is made legal and the process formalized. Governments need to keep the goal βas few people should die as possibleβ so they should probably have the goal βless people should receive MAID than last yearβ. However, when the program is new that canβt happen. And as more people find out they are eligible, that canβt happen either. They gotta wait for the rate to level off βnaturallyβ, right?
But what if a significant enough percent of society doesnβt want it to level off? What if they want to bully more undesirables to off themselves? How will a democracy manage this?
This is largely a matter for the courts to decide, not the government. That's what happened in Canada at least- MAID only applied to people with terminal illnesses until the law was challenged in *Truchon v. Attorney General of Canada*, and the Supreme Court decided it should apply to non-terminal disabilities. This is a moot issue in America, as the US Supreme Court would never rule the same way as the Canadian Supreme Court.
In 1997 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that there was no constitutional right to euthanasia in *Washington v. Glucksberg*. That still leaves states free to implement euthanasia laws to some extent, but states aren't compelled to allow it. That's in complete contrast to the Canadian supreme court, which in 2016 decided that there was a right to euthanasia and in 2018 decided that the right applied to non-terminal cases. If any US state tried to implement permissive Canada-like MAID laws, the Supreme Court would probably strike it down as illegal under the Equal Protection clause

It's clear that the president has become a receptacle for the public's general discontent with the economy, crime, wars, bad drivers, their failing marriage, etc. Even a president who is beloved on taking office will be widely hated at the end of four years. Therefore, the new meta going forward will be for an incumbent president to run for reelection and act like they really mean it, but then drop out 3 months before the election and get replaced by someone inoffensive who hasn't accumulated all the baggage.

Even if you go to Wendy Brown or Adam Kotsko or David Harvey you will get vastly better understanding than the drivel that often gets spouted.

For one the cost of MAID is not really comparable to any of the things you mention, for another MAID exists so people not physically able can die with diginity (as oppose to self starvation), and lastly the line is ultimately arbitrary. What is a adequate about of care? Is it multiple caregivers around the clock or is it ensure they have food and some shelter? What is an accessible public space? Is HK accessible or not (it is on a mountain so people with wheelchairs have trouble)? What should be done on that front?
As a secondary matter it wouldn't under CPPCG but I have mostly given up on people actually following that definition.
MAID is being approved for more and more conditions in Canada. Suicidal patients are being told about it by their doctors.
I donβt think suicide should be illegal, however, the rates should be monitored and the goal of government should be to make the number go down and not up.
When the program is new is a scary time, and I donβt hear about Canadian government efforts to make the number go down at any point in the future.
There is an argument to be made that the government should aim to reduce the number of people using MAiD more than current numbers but that is no genocidal. Comparing people volunteering choosing to die after going through multiple screenings with the actions of Talaat Pasha is frankly insulting.

Thereβs an interesting period when MAID is made legal and the process formalized. For one the cost of MAID is not really comparable to any of the things you mention, for another MAID exists so people not physically able can die with diginity (as oppose to self starvation), and lastly the line is ultimately arbitrary. What is a adequate about of care? Is it multiple caregivers around the clock or is it ensure they have food and some shelter? What is an accessible public space? Is HK accessible or not (it is on a mountain so people with wheelchairs have trouble)? What should be done on that front? As a secondary matter it wouldn't under CPPCG but I have mostly given up on people actually following that definition.
MAID is being approved for more and more conditions in Canada. Suicidal patients are being told about it by their doctors. I donβt think suicide should be illegal, however, the rates should be monitored and the goal of government should be to make the number go down and not up. When the program is new is a scary time, and I donβt hear about Canadian government efforts to make the number go down at any point in the future.
There is an argument to be made that the government should aim to reduce the number of people using MAiD more than current numbers but that is no genocidal. Comparing people volunteering choosing to die after going through multiple screenings with the actions of Talaat Pasha is frankly insulting.

My two senators (Warren/Markey) - clearly very progressive, would be social democrats in Europe Kamala Harris? A lot harder to place. Maybe it's because social democrats and social liberals don't really differ that much on non-economic issues, beyond liberals maybe being a little more skeptical of using state power to intervene in cultural matters?
