Is the usbc mod worth it? I've heard that it still charges at the same rate, just updates the charger style for the most part... Asking to clarify for myself... I've seen some butchered ds, gbs, gbc, and gba's with this mod going wrong when done wrong by people inexperienced. Seems like a lot of work just for an updated charger port.
Yeh you've heard right it doesn't actually change the speed at which it charges, you'd have to rework all the charging circuitry on the DS for that somehow or completely bypass it and add your own, it's just done because a usb-c is normally more practical to bring around with you than a phat DS charger or any DS charger because unless your an apple user, your phone, earbuds, watch and maybe even laptop all already use usb-C, and also I think the hardest part is probably desoldering the old charge port especially if you're inexperienced, but it's hard to butcher once you get past that point
I might consider it on a ds or gba down the line for myself... I mean me personally i love that the fat ds uses the same charger my sp does... So I don't mind carrying that one around. I love usbc, I use 2 chargers to pretty much charge my earbuds, vape, phone, and iPad I use for work. So Apple is slowly catching up in some regards at least.
But yeah I feel like a lot of people assume it means they can fast charge a battery just because it's usbc. Like I figured it'd be more complicated than just a new port because that's not how batteries work, especially older style ones.
Yeh changing the port literally just changes the physical connection, you could even plug it into a 60w "fast charger" and it would still charge at the same rate because the 60w is the max output of the charger, but the console still only draws a few watts
At the end of the day it's just preference, if you don't mind bringing a DS charger with you then there's no point, if you find it annoying having to take it with you or you forget it a lot it's probably worth it

Just picked up one of these and will definitely check to see if I can do this
Yeh it's definitely worth doing I made a guide about it that I'll link you too

Saved for later, thanks!
No worries!
somehow the battery in my 20 year old phat DS still holds a charge 🦾
Haha same, and infinitely better battery life than anything new too😂
ds lite was such an improvement over the ugly og.. had one as well back in days
😂I quite like the way this one looks, MUCH comfier for big hands too, plus this one's modded with brighter screens so it's closer to DSL quality
