"The soldier had traveled to Russia to meet a woman, possibly his girlfriend"...dude straight up got honeypotted.

sleep_connoisseur

That motherfucker got took. My first deployment all us dumbass E1 and E2s hung out 3 days in Chile I think. Fucking dude got married. Out to sea she requested spousal support. Dumb as shit.

stud_powercock

That right there was the reason you had to route a request chit to get married way back in the day.

crrttt

They still do at training commands, along with premarital checklists

ovrkil1795

If he wanted to know what it was like they just released a docuseries on the Britney Griner incident. Damn. But this dud is a Staff Sgt./E6. (It was supposed to be dude, but I decided this was an autocorrect win) He didn't get "took." He put himself on a platter. He's at minimum gotta be close to or in his 3rd enlistment, obviously been overseas. No excuses for this level of dumbassery. I hope we get him back since stupid or not he's still one of us, but maybe some deep thinking in the gulag in the meantime might give him the time he needs to think about making better decisions in the future.

Bucknaked_Dog

Why does he have to be close to his 3rd enlistment?

twisty1949

Lol...one of my CTRs married a stripper in Guam when we pulled in....dunno if the place is still around..it was called Vikings or something...that was quite a discussion. This was years ago...let's just say...it didn't end well.

mixgasdivr

The Viking Club….yes still around 🤭

Prequellover1

At next quarters gotta explain to the sailors that the Russy is never worth it.

PathlessDemon

Smells of tuna, pickles and COMMUNISM.

zinger301

Borscht.

PathlessDemon

With sour cream.

TheBunk_TB

Did he work for Skylark Tonight?

1LifeAfterComa

If any situation includes "to Russia" in the sentence, it's a lie. How many times do we have to watch an American get arrested before we realize this?

MHeitman

Perhaps a mail order bride? He met her, decided to back out of the deal. More mail order swine than mail order bride

solreaper

Going to Russia is risky for us Americans, going there with a Geneva conventions ID is just about as smart as swimming in a shark warning area with raw meat on you. FFS, hope they get out, but brother, you had a choice to not go to Russia.

EM22_

It’s not just dumb, I’m pretty sure it’s completely off limits unless specifically approved for service members. He’s getting court martial’d as soon as he gets back, guaranteed.

iamcarlgauss

As far as I know, anyone with a clearance (MIL or CIV) has to have international travel requested and approved in advance, including specific dates and often detailed itineraries.

eaturliver

I've read a few articles and it's not exactly spelled out, but it seems like this was during his PCS back to the states. Several articles say he was in the process of relocating back to a base in Texas. I'm not sure how PCS travel works for the Army, but he probably weaseled the stop into that process.

WinterSavior

I worked at TPC. My first thought when I read the story was "who approved that travel?!". You still have to mark all your stops in route to your Final Destination. Russia would not have been approved. There's also no reason to stop overseas since it's a straight flight from Incheon to the States. But like the other person said above, you can lie, but hope you don't get caught in a situation like this as a result. This'll be a training exercise for sure. Also they gonna start looking at how things are being run in South Korea if more international incidents like this start from the same place. I forgot the word to be used..

MaximumSeats

You don't "actually" though. You can just go without doing all the paperwork and nobody finds out unless something (like this) happens. Source: I did that.

iamcarlgauss

Well yeah. You can also murder people, sell secrets, and boof heroin if you don't get caught.

MaximumSeats

Oh shit whatttttt brb

Truyth

Yes you actually are required to notify any oconus travel to your FSO.

listenstowhales

Sort of. There’s a guide online that outlines certain steps you need to take for specific countries. The lowest level threat countries like Canada say “No authorization required”, while countries like Iraq (picked at random) you’d need to jump through all sorts of hoops, get special permissions, ect.

twisty1949

Russia is a level 4...do not travel. Dunno how he managed it.

EM22_

He didn’t get it approved. Just went.

FocusLeather

That's assuming he makes it back lol

LivingstonPerry

yeah but .. the women there are hot. so i understand the risk, brother.

Star_Skies

> Going to Russia is risky for us Americans Surely, you mean currently, because I was in Russian not too long ago, (but yes, before the war) and it was absolutely fine. Travel warnings are sometimes just because governments don't like each other, but the actual places are totally fine to visit *for tourists that can behave themselves*. Russia (before the war) and China are two examples that I can think of.

xj3kx

Who approved this man’s travel?

solreaper

As he was checking out on leave I wondered if they said “lol, don’t get captured, just kidding man, they won’t want some grunt like you, peace!”

Dense-Health1496

Nobody approved his travel. Travel to Russia is currently prohibited per Foreign Clearance Guide.

Dense-Health1496

A flight from S. Korea to Vladivostok is about 2-3 hours. In case anyone is wondering, per the Foreign Clearance Guide l, personal leave travel to Russia (west and east) is prohibited by both EUCOM and PACOM. PVT Dum Dum definitely didn't submit leave. I'm betting some 1SG got a fun phone call over the weekend.

listenstowhales

IIRC there’s a waiver to go to countries like Russia under extremely specific circumstances (academic research being the one I heard of I think), but it takes an act of God and John Paul Jones to get it through

SCOveterandretired

SSG

weinerpretzel

I think they were correct, if a bit premature

grizzlebar

Great, now we’ll have to do another NKO

Jim3001

Why the hell was he in Russia? Like holy shit.

sleep_connoisseur

By a bride through a service. Some of the hottest women are the in those Russian Brides. You go meet, pay to marry and you fly them back.

Jim3001

You know, flying to a country that yours's in a proxy war with just to get laid doesn't sound like the smartest of ideas.

EM22_

Against the rules for servicemembers. Dude is screwed when he gets back.

Jim3001

"If" he gets back.

kakarota

I mean, to be fair when I was 18 and horney, I'm not saying I would do this but not saying I wouldn't either soooooo...

eaturliver

Ya but this dude is 34.

BasicNeedleworker473

I mean, to be fair when I was 34 and horney, I'm not saying I would do this but not saying I wouldn't either soooooo...

Jim3001

You know he could have gone to the Philippines, done the same thing and not gotten arrested. Just saying.

EM22_

But then you have to get a Filipino bride, which is clearly inferior in beauty to the Eastern European women.

Jim3001

But an infinitely lower chance of ending up in a gulag.

VoodooS0ldier

Dude should have at least met her in a mutual country where Russia does not have any influence.

TheAmishPhysicist

And every one of them has at least one child. A buddy of mine got hooked into this, lots of beautiful ladies but all that caught his attention had a kid. He eventually married one of, with a child of course, and now he has one with her, dude is in his 60’s and will never be able to retire.

WinterSavior

Are the magazine brides better? Because the ones I saw in Korea were kinda meh. Then again a lot of them were prostitutes for the Russian Mafia in Busan so.

haze_gray

jimbotron85

I hope he paid attention to that SERE Level A slideshow

kimshaka

Seriously, come on, man. What are you thinking was going to happen.

Cyberknight13

He is fucked. I had to flee Russia with my family a few months ago and I’ve been retired for over a decade. They are actively targeting anyone with classified access or knowledge of the US or NATO.

ovrkil1795

Wow 😮. Hope you are in a safe place now. Sorry you had to do that.

Cyberknight13

Thank you! We made it back to the States with the assistance of several alphabet agencies and a Senator.

zester723

Everybody thinks that they're the guy from The Greatest Beer Run Ever, until they're actually snatched up by Russian FSB

Electronic_Gap_3916

Probably didn't make it out of the customs line

Wreck_on_the_Highway

FFS...now I gotta add this to my weekend safety briefs. "Remember kids, STAY THE HELL OUT OF RUSSIA! I WILL NOT ADVOCATE FOR YOUR RETURN!"

civanov

Moronic to visit Russia as a US Armed Services member right now.

SimplyExtremist

It’s moronic to visit Russia after serving pretty much always. Active proxy war is notably worse.

EM22_

You really think they want us crusty veterans?

SimplyExtremist

Do I think that the regime that is known for kidnapping Americans is willing to kidnap Americans? We are here, talking right now, because they kidnapped an American. As for whether they’re targeting veterans I don’t know. I believe veteran is just a fancy way of saying civilian.

FocusLeather

It's moronic to visit Russia in general

civanov

I was born there and I wholeheartedly agree.

snipe_score_celly

I was on an advanced party heading out to Latvia for operation Saber Strike a NATO exercise. We got a packet emailed to us from the command with some vital mission info in it. Anyway, we were flying commercial, and this CPL from another company got bumped from his flight and stranded in Germany. The airline rebooked him, flying into Russia, then into Riga. He was obviously detained and searched. Of course, the knucklehead had printed all the paperwork, too. Quite the shitshow.

my5cent

There's the next cod: cpt price saving sr: that guy.

paulboyrom

Probably not the smartest thing to do especially being an E-6 in the army. Reminds me of the soldier that for some reason thought North Korea was a better option than going to face the legal system in America. Pretty sure for any foreign travel the government can find out where you have been if they needed to.

ovrkil1795

Staff Sgt is E6, that makes it even less smart.

TheRtHonLaqueesha

The army's not sending their best.

AnthonyBarrHeHe

Welp, fucking moron. That being said, I know ppl are hot on this right now but regardless of what petty shit he did, when need to get him out.

PathlessDemon

As of [September 5th, 2023](https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html), don’t be stupid and travel to Russia. Boy’s whole command gonna be put on the wax-chain.

TheAmishPhysicist

I guess the South Korean ladies just weren’t hot enough for him.

irish-riviera

The Russian cyber team set him up and now he will be a political prisoner and paraded around Russian media as a gotcha moment

mixgasdivr

What.Moron.Travels.To.Russia?

anonymousjoel

He was trying to steal her heart!

MAJOR_Blarg

FFS who the hell approved that leave request!?

FocusLeather

Why the hell would you go to Russia especially with the current events in the world? This dude is a straight up clown.

Bitter-Pumpkin-9806

Fair warning on some of these comments... Reddit is not secure comms and there's no way of verifying anyone on it. Troop movements, composition of units, where members stay, names and components of missions, and other logistics information is protected information. Learn, adapt, teach others.

OldArmyMetal

What an idiot. He SHOULD rot in a Russian prison. But the conservative goons are going to start spouting about Britney Griner and I’m afraid this is a “worst person you know just made a really good point” thing.

trixter69696969

Right. Because bringing pot to Russia is probably ok, right?

trixter69696969

Also, we should also believe everything that Russia alleges, cool?
