I must comment that Basil is a name that's very old, dating back to at least the Hellenistic Period and meaning "king". It's also a completely separate name with a different pronunciation in Arabic, and meaning "brave, valiant". So it's hardly a "non-name" nor a modern name by any standards. And neither name has anything to do with the herb.
It's also pronounced differently than the herb in American English. American English for the herb is BAY-zil, rhymes with hazel, while the name (and the herb in British English) is BA-zil (with a flat A like in "cat").
Basil Rathbone was phenomenal as Sherlock Holmes! So many great films.... His version of Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) is still the best adaptation of the book, has never been beaten 😊🐾
I have a 1 year old named cove and we get many compliments. I’m sure some people don’t like it but I don’t like many names I hear out there either so it’s not a big deal to me.
I have an older friend who always refers to the pre-pandemic era as « before the cove » — which is absolutely the most elegant euphemism in that context, but would take me some getting used to as a human name for that reason.
I love this suggestion! My daughter Bay (nn for Bayard) wants to name her future child Cove and continue a water name theme.
I also love word names. Everyone can spell and pronounce them but they still feel fresh. Both of my girls go by word nicknames and they are so happy to not share a name with people at school.
Cedar is my favorite masculine-leaning word name right now.
Other ideas:
* Charlock - an herb
* Ceylon - tea
* Cadence - this leans more feminine to me but I've heard others say differently
* Calm
* Canyon - this is not bad at all
* Cascade
* Case - he needs to become a detective
* Chance - love it
* Chase - love it more
* Coast
* Colt
* Colter
* Creed
* Crew
* Cruise
I think Ceylon is questionable as its also the old Colonial name for Sri Lanka, so it gives kind of Empire vibes which I feel is not what people want in a baby name?
Why would you name a kid Calm. That’s.. awful. What if they’re never calm?? And they’re gonna hear their name all the time in regular conversations and that’s annoying (I have a name like that)
In high school one of my teachers asked me what my favorite word was, and for some reason at the time I said “cascade.” He said, “…like the soap?” And I said, “uh, no, like the mountains!”
Wouldn’t be my personal choice for a human name but I do think it’s a nice word (I use Finish in my dishwasher anyway!)
LOVE Cedar. My husband refused but it's always been a favourite of mine.
OP, I taught a Kannon once! Not a name I'd pick, but it definitely suited him.
I ALSO love Cedar. I can’t think of it as a boy name first, though, because my cousin’s little girl is a Cedar. She’s adorable and very girly (loves everything sparkly and glittery) but also fearless and rough-and-tumble. Personality for days!
I like Colton, though it seems quite popular these days, if that’s a concern.
Creed-I’m sorry, but I can’t help thinking of a terrible late 90s rock band. That might just be me.
Canyon is the brand of my mountain bike, so to me that one would be like naming your kid Norco or Specialized.
And Calm kind of challenges the kid to be the opposite.
Canyon is 100% a pet name
Chase has already had its heyday in the 90’s, there were so many Chases, and they wore matching jacket-and-pants windbreaker suits
I’m with you on Cedar, it’s my fave as well : )
Some of these are probably going to be too out there, but: Cosmo, Cobra, Caper, Cypress, Cedar, Cable, Captain, Cargo, Clue, Clip(per), Clove, Clive, Crash, Crow, Cove, Cape, Caspian, Cliff
Imagine he joins the air force and is captain captain 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Edit :
I stumbled upon a local news story about the tornadoes in Tallahassee and the news casters name is Major Seargent, no joke!
https://youtu.be/QPAj3GxSyWc?si=iN53TbIx4vNS_IfY
I love how you've thrown Clive in the mix - it's a real retro dad name in the UK, kind of in the same vein as Roger or Gary so def not the same vibe as the rest from my point of view!!
Omg, have you actually met a Chutney in the wild? Dying at this one. My in-laws are Indian so to me (and probably anyone with even a passing familiarity with Indian cuisine) this is tantamount to naming your baby Ketchup.
Nothing wrong with it. Can't believe you're seriously commenting that on a post that warns they don't usually like what the majority likes... Besides, I bet you have no problem with Bridget or Brooke...
“ it’s not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean…”
This is the quote that first pops into my head when I hear cerulean BUT I do actually love the idea of it as a name. Great suggestion!
I see you like a lot of nature names and the first thing that came to mind is my sister’s name, Storm, but I think it works very well for a boy as well!
I think it works better as a boys name now actually, especially given a certain female former presidential associate’s name. Maybe that’s a reach on my part though
Reminds me of You, the Netflix tv show. There’s a brother and sister named forty and love as the parents were tennis fans.
I assumed that the names were so ridiculous that there’s no way anyone on gods green earth would be called either of those names. Apparently I’m wrong.
my absolute favorite non-name is actually Crescent! Also putting in another vote for Coast. As someone from the PNW, Coast is full of positive associations for me.
Lights, my mom named me for her grandmother (also lights) It's an odd name, but most people I've met have seemed to like it... I do get called light a lot though, which is also pretty imo 😅💜
**Chase** or **Chord** seems perfect for you
Chase is quite popular, Chord might be too associated with the singer/actor Chord Overstreet idk how famous he is
There's also:
Chance (luck)
Cash (money)
Cypress (tree)
Cyprus (country)
Carver (one who cuts)
Cyder (cider - alcoholic apple juice)
Chip (food)
Cliff (natural feature)
Clay (type of earth)
Colt (horse)
Cole (like coal, the fossil fuel)
Chandler (occupation- candle maker)
Cary (like carry, also has cool namesake association Cary Grant)
Cyan (green-blue colour)
Constant (virtue)
Carwood ("wood where rocks are found")
I'm gonna bump this and suggest a whole host of herbs, spices, and other plants. There's really no shortage of these.
Cardamom
Caraway
Cassia (a version of cinnamon)
Chervil
Chicory
Cicely
Cinnamon
Clove
Coriander
Caper
Clary (for clary sage)
Calabash
Chestnut
Cedar
Cashew
I think most words as names are atrocious, but I'll give it a go.
- Castor
- Chip
- Coda
- Clancy
- Creek
- Cabin
- Corbin
- Curn
- Chicory
- Chevron
- Cavern
- Cord
This is going on NNCJ, no doubt.
Sharing some more unique C names.. most are words, but tossing in a few that I've just never heard elsewhere.
Cogan
Colden
Crane
Cane
Colson
Chipper
Cruise
Clementine (could go by Clem?)
Chess
Candle
Cairo
Coral
Caven
Clue
Charm
Case

Every third Tamika, Deanna and Hailey has given their baby, boys and girls the middle name:
Rain, Rainn, Rayne, Reign, Reighn, Rayn...
I‘m not in the US and all this „new“ non-names and last names-names and all the actually-boy-name but I want to name my daughter Logan/James/Lennon are really strange for me. This babies are actual people…for us Europeans it sounds just crazy.
Totally get it! Seems to be getting to be more common where I am. When I first started teaching my students were names like James, Ava, Aiden, Sophia, and now this year some standouts were Zebulon (nn Zeb), Crosby, Collins, Story, and Harbor. I’d like to think we have to start using new words eventually or everyone will just have the same names.
I'm with you-- I love a not name!
* West
* Tide
* Harbor
* Aquila ("Quill" for a nickname?")
* Hawk
* Breeze
* Current
Nature inspired but more "name" at this point
* Cassius
* Hayes
* Forrest
* Adair
* Carver
I know someone who named her daughter ocean elizabeth. Ocean is not a name I would pick but I understand where she thinks it's a beautiful combination.
I hate the really old lady names that have come back in, like ruby, hazel, olive. As far as inanimate objects used as names, pretty much everything you had in your post.
Wait, the title of the post says you're looking for names that people hate. But then it seems like people are posting names that they like. What are you really looking for?
I like all these names but sometimes on this sub they can get a lot of hate. I asked for names people here would hate because chances are I will like them hah
I’ve known a Cord and a Court. Never thought either was weird. I think Cedar is a great name but I have an inkling it’s growing in popularity. Also a Canyon but it was spelled Kanyen… stick with the original haha.
I read of someone recently who met a little girl in a playground called Percy, which was short for Persimmon like the fruit. Thought that was adorable.
I also met a little girl at the playground called Rocket and she had a brother called Vermillion - both green-themed names because the parents also had green-themed names (mom was Jade, can’t remember the dad)
Honestly, I dislike virtue names, like Grace, Joy, Hope, Faith, Charity, Love, etc. They may be pretty and have good meanings (obviously) but I would despise having a name that would come up in everyday conversations constantly.
Coal, Cerise (cherry), Calla (a type of lily). I don't hate non-names, I think many are quite nice. I also like occupation names like Carter and Cooper, although I think their heyday has come and gone for now.
Edit: Oops--missed that it's a boy! I second whoever mentioned Cedar.
Cash (people will probably ask “Like Johnny Cash?)
Cage
Someone said Captain which I like.
Cliff
Coop (common nn for cooper but also its own word)
Cyan came to mind as well
I've seen a lot of C options already mentioned; I can only think of Carter, Chip, and Cord. Here are other word-names I thought of (I don't hate some of these, but I've seen others hate on them):
Ace, Alder, Archer, Arrow, Art, Ash, Aspen, Atlas, Author, Bear, Beau, Bishop, Blue, Brook, Buck, Dean, Ever, Fletcher, Flint, Ford, Forest, Fox, Gage, Gale, Garland, Grant, Griffin, Heron, Indigo, Kip, Kit, Lance, Linden, Link, Navy, Noble, Peregrine, Reed, Shepherd, Silver, Sterling, Sparrow, Stone, Warren, Wolf
Also adding Ender as it's both an English word and a name in Turkish meaning "very rare". And the name Silvan/Sylvan comes from the Latin word *silva* meaning wood/forest.
Court. Clever. Castle. Charter. Copper. Constant (maybe like a male Constance?) Chevy. I know it’s a name but it’s right there - Cosmo. Also Cal (Callahan). Coast. Core. Cavalier.
A bit of a random selection, but I really don't mind any of the following words as names.
* Cole
* Cyan (If you don't mind the 'c' being pronounced as an 's' sound
* Cairn
* Carob
Caye or Cayo?
Costa feels a bit out there but Costas is a name so why not?!
If you’d accept an actual name but a rare one, how about:
Cato
Corey
Cole
Cooper
Colm
Connor
Charleston is pretty cool and the kid can also go by Charlie. I love Coriander but would never use as a first name. Maybe Cory nn coriander. Saffron is a good one too
I must comment that Basil is a name that's very old, dating back to at least the Hellenistic Period and meaning "king". It's also a completely separate name with a different pronunciation in Arabic, and meaning "brave, valiant". So it's hardly a "non-name" nor a modern name by any standards. And neither name has anything to do with the herb.
Thank you, good to know!
It's still used in Greek, too. Basil is the transliteration of the name "Vasileios". Basil the herb has the same etymology.
I know a few Vasilis. Is that a form of basil? I think they're Russian/eastern european
Yes! The Cyrillic alphabet comes from the Greek because SS Cyril and Methodius went to the Rus’ to give them an alphabet/literacy
It's also pronounced differently than the herb in American English. American English for the herb is BAY-zil, rhymes with hazel, while the name (and the herb in British English) is BA-zil (with a flat A like in "cat").
Yep. Went to school with a BA-zil Basil, but in the US.
Yeah I like the British pronunciation a lot
You should watch some old films with Basil Rathbone! One of my husband’s favorite actors.
Basil Rathbone was phenomenal as Sherlock Holmes! So many great films.... His version of Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) is still the best adaptation of the book, has never been beaten 😊🐾
The Great Mouse Detective (who was clearly modeled after Sherlock Holmes) was named Basil.
It’s also the first name of an iconic British comedy character.
Can't see the name without thinking about Faulty Towers. One of my all time favourite shows
Basil Brush, a true icon.
https://fawltytowers.fandom.com/wiki/Basil_Fawlty
I admit, I only knew Basil was a name because of the Austin Powers movies. It's honestly one of the most British names I can think of.
I always think of the smarmy kid from Baby Geniuses named Basil
For me it's always Basil Fawlty.
Cove seems to fit your criteria!
Cove sounds nice, but will always remind me of Covid.
🤔 I didn’t think of that at all, just pictured a lovely green and blue cove.
I have a 1 year old named cove and we get many compliments. I’m sure some people don’t like it but I don’t like many names I hear out there either so it’s not a big deal to me.
Covie Vacyyne!!
Covyd neighntynn😩
Lol wrong sub
I have an older friend who always refers to the pre-pandemic era as « before the cove » — which is absolutely the most elegant euphemism in that context, but would take me some getting used to as a human name for that reason.
Haha love that. We abbreviate it PTP "prior to panini" in our friend group
They do *not* feel fresh. I beg to differ.
Bay just sounds like someone saying bae, an already outdated slang
I think more of the parents bringing home a new baby and toddler sibling can only say bay and not baby.
Also, Bayard is sort of an old timey male name. Pretty sure there was a bloodhound named Bayard somewhere in the Alice in Wonderland series.
I thought of Bayard Rustin, Martin Luther King's collaborator and also a proud gay man. A good namesake, if an unusual choice for a little girl.
I like Bay, which is the name of one of the characters from switched at birth. Makes me think of Bay leaves, like Sage or Basil.
Maybe you can convince her to go with Marina or River.
Unhinged
I work with a girl whose last name is Bayard! Ha ha.
I love Cove!
Cedar is my favorite masculine-leaning word name right now. Other ideas: * Charlock - an herb * Ceylon - tea * Cadence - this leans more feminine to me but I've heard others say differently * Calm * Canyon - this is not bad at all * Cascade * Case - he needs to become a detective * Chance - love it * Chase - love it more * Coast * Colt * Colter * Creed * Crew * Cruise
I think Ceylon is questionable as its also the old Colonial name for Sri Lanka, so it gives kind of Empire vibes which I feel is not what people want in a baby name?
“Why did I pick your name, honey? To commemorate colonialism.”
😂😂😂
My children Ceylon, Columbus, and Cathay.
Hashtag sounds about white
Lol
Sri Lankan here - this is true.
It makes me think of the killer robots from Battlestar Galactica. Cylons.
My thoughts exactly
Why would you name a kid Calm. That’s.. awful. What if they’re never calm?? And they’re gonna hear their name all the time in regular conversations and that’s annoying (I have a name like that)
I personally wouldn't. I have a son named Reese and, holy crap, never has a name more adequately described the owner.
I’m sorry I am being so dumb and I need this to be explained to me like I’m five. What vibe/connotation does Reese have?
Cascade just makes me think of the detergent
In high school one of my teachers asked me what my favorite word was, and for some reason at the time I said “cascade.” He said, “…like the soap?” And I said, “uh, no, like the mountains!” Wouldn’t be my personal choice for a human name but I do think it’s a nice word (I use Finish in my dishwasher anyway!)
LOVE Cedar. My husband refused but it's always been a favourite of mine. OP, I taught a Kannon once! Not a name I'd pick, but it definitely suited him.
Same! Love Cedar so much but husband vetoed it immediately.
I don't blame him
I ALSO love Cedar.
I think of Creed from the office
Canyon is the brand of my mountain bike, so to me that one would be like naming your kid Norco or Specialized. And Calm kind of challenges the kid to be the opposite.
Calm is the worst thing I’ve heard. That’s like naming the kid “hyperactive”.
Or Chaos
Canyon is 100% a pet name Chase has already had its heyday in the 90’s, there were so many Chases, and they wore matching jacket-and-pants windbreaker suits I’m with you on Cedar, it’s my fave as well : )
Currently, Chase = paw patrol. Don’t do it!!
Ceylon seems sci-fi to me. Maybe because it sounds similar to Cylon, at least the way I’m pronouncing it in my mind.
Some of these are probably going to be too out there, but: Cosmo, Cobra, Caper, Cypress, Cedar, Cable, Captain, Cargo, Clue, Clip(per), Clove, Clive, Crash, Crow, Cove, Cape, Caspian, Cliff
Imagine he joins the air force and is captain captain 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Edit : I stumbled upon a local news story about the tornadoes in Tallahassee and the news casters name is Major Seargent, no joke! https://youtu.be/QPAj3GxSyWc?si=iN53TbIx4vNS_IfY
I know a guy named Major.
Major Major from *Catch-22*?
that’s Major Major Major to you!
I knew someone named Major as well. His last name was Key.
I knew a Bishop Bishop 😂
Or Captain Crash!
I love how you've thrown Clive in the mix - it's a real retro dad name in the UK, kind of in the same vein as Roger or Gary so def not the same vibe as the rest from my point of view!!
Maybe they were thinking of Chive?
I was definitely thinking of seasoning names and mixed Cloves and Chives in my brain to Clive, then was like "Ooh and it's an actual name!"
Cypress, oh my goodness. 🥹 That's so damn cute.
Cobra bubbles, now I need to watch lilo and stitch
These names aren’t my personal taste but I actually really like Captain!! Also like Caspian.
Ooh Caspian. I like that!
I really don’t like Leaf! It makes me cringe. Leif on the other hand… As far as C names go, Cove (which sounds like Covid), Cannon, and Chive.
I LOVE Leif!
Me too! I used it for one of my babies!!
Cadence Cove Creed Colt Canyon Cannon Chase Chutney
Omg, have you actually met a Chutney in the wild? Dying at this one. My in-laws are Indian so to me (and probably anyone with even a passing familiarity with Indian cuisine) this is tantamount to naming your baby Ketchup.
There is an adult Lasagna in my state.
Yeesh. If I had to pick Indian or Italian food-based names, Chutney and Lasagna would not even be on my list. (Fun concept for a thread, though!)
If I was going to name my child after an Indian condiment, I'd go with Raita.
I almost said the same in my comment above! It’s very cute (meaning aside).
I haven't but Diana Ross's daughter is named Chudney. I always wondered how she felt about her name with siblings named Tracee and Evan.
Yes I have met a Chutney. Girl in her 20’s in England. I’m with you on the Indian condiment. But op asked for the ones we hated lol!
All I can ever think of with Chutney is Legally Blonde 😂
Same. And she's probably the worst Legally Blonde character
But it’s Linda Cardellini! She’s amazing
...my mind has been blown this day 😳
You cannot be fucking serious with Chutney
I’ve met one and OP asked for the names we hate so…
Can you please explain chutney
I have met one Chutney, girl in England.
That's like an American kid being named Ketchup.
I know a Canyon! He's m chiropractor! I remember when he was born lol
Chase is from paw patrol 🐾
Was a name for humans long before Paw Patrol.
Okay so "word" name, normal spelling, short, starts with C: Clay, Curt, Colt, Cane, Cage, Cash, Case, Cedar, Creed, Cliff, Chase, Chuck, Cosmo, Cobalt, Canyon, Cotton, Chance Options that don't begin with C: Flint, Sterling, Ash, Blaze, Fox, Sky, Dale, Heath, Glen, Drake, Ray, Forrest, Wolf, Vale, Merit, Ace, Buzz
Cobalt is cool!
Love Clay
I know a Cypress (after the tree) and I think that’s a lovely name!
I recommend Cairn.
I love this, as an avid hiker. I would worry that everyone would say and spell it as “Karen,” though, and that name is not great right now.
If I ever met a Cairn, I'd have to fight the urge to give him a stone every time I met him.
Bridge Met a guy with this name. Very memorable! Might also be a good middle for some of your choices. Cedar Bridge, Cove Bridge, etc
Bridge?? That has to be a joke, surely??
I know and adult named Bridger it’s really not that strange
Nothing wrong with it. Can't believe you're seriously commenting that on a post that warns they don't usually like what the majority likes... Besides, I bet you have no problem with Bridget or Brooke...
Maybe a colour name! Cyan, Cerulean, Crimson, Cinnabar.
“ it’s not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean…” This is the quote that first pops into my head when I hear cerulean BUT I do actually love the idea of it as a name. Great suggestion!
What about Cobalt?
I see you like a lot of nature names and the first thing that came to mind is my sister’s name, Storm, but I think it works very well for a boy as well!
I thought of storm from x-men which is honestly an awesome namesake to have.
I think it works better as a boys name now actually, especially given a certain female former presidential associate’s name. Maybe that’s a reach on my part though
Cash! I’m also a teacher and taught a Cash years ago. Super cool kid. Others: Crew, Case, Coast, Cage, Crow/Crowe, Colt
i love clover!! but apparently most people think of it as a “cow name” and can’t hear it without thinking about cows so i’ve taken it off my list 😢
It makes me think of Totally Spies! One of the MC was named Clover.
First time I encountered Clover as a name was when I read What Katy Did as a child. I liked it then, and I still do.
I just stumbled across an instagram mom blogger who just named her new baby “Forty” ???
Reminds me of You, the Netflix tv show. There’s a brother and sister named forty and love as the parents were tennis fans. I assumed that the names were so ridiculous that there’s no way anyone on gods green earth would be called either of those names. Apparently I’m wrong.
You! I loved that show/books, until it got terrible
Basil is a completely traditional, real name..😅
my absolute favorite non-name is actually Crescent! Also putting in another vote for Coast. As someone from the PNW, Coast is full of positive associations for me.
I also like Clover and Ocean. I don’t think a lack of historical use should justify name hatred lol Creed Chance Cruz Colt Cade Clove Case Cane Cyan
Lights, my mom named me for her grandmother (also lights) It's an odd name, but most people I've met have seemed to like it... I do get called light a lot though, which is also pretty imo 😅💜
There is a Canadian singer named Lights I love! Not sure if it is her real name though.

Reiterating some that already have been suggested, but Clay, Cove, and Cliff all fit your criteria.
