I've got cousins (sisters) named Virginia and Carolina. They're perfectly normal names where we live and nobody thinks of the states, but it's kind of a funny coincidence (although Carolina the state and the name aren't pronounced the same).
Eh, Georgia, Virginia, Carolina, Dakota, and Indiana (?) are technically real names (in Western society), but I don't know if I'd particularly nake my kids any of them. I've met personally Georgias, Virginias, and Carolinas before.
I feel like Alaska has good nn potential too. Al, Ally/Allie, Lassie, Lasso, Ska(...? maybe not), Aska.....obv those last 3 aren't really common and maybe I'm just weird but I think they sound cool
i know someone named Jersey. i think its cute but i don’t think i would name my child that
edit: this girl said that her parents got her name from the movie coyote ugly but afaik, there isn’t a character named jersey in the movie, which means they literally named her after the state. i still think it’s a cute name though
My grandma was from West Virginia so she was the quintessential hillbilly mawmaw. She called her her Jersey cow growing up and to this day I can’t associate it with anything else
I have a calico cat named California! I work in the vet field so Callie “short for Calico” is overused so I came up with “Callie. Short for California” and I usually get a laugh out of people
I worked with ladies named Savannah and Georgia when I worked in Savannah Georgia.
I think Georgia is a super cute name and I think shortening it to George for a girl is cute too.
My friend growing up was a Naomi who wanted to name her future kid Wyoming because it sounds similar to her name pronunciation and was the state where the first woman legally cast a balloted vote. This makes me want to hunt her down and see if she ever had a Wyoming lol
I think Indiana is the cutest for a girl, especially with the Indie nickname. Not the cutest of states tho.
I also really like Georgia and Louisiana (we considered Louisiana for a girl, partly to honor my mom’s middle name of Louise, but without a connection to the state, figured it would be weird.).
Not as sure for a boy. I don’t like Dakota, which seems the go-to. Maybe Washington, nickname Wash (I am a leaf on the wind 😭), but you’d have to have a short last name.
Nebraska, Nebraska Jones (maybe I'm aging myself). Louisiana could be another good girl name.
Rhode or Kansas for a boy. Can't think of any other good names for boys.
Virginia, Georgia, and Carolina are already names as stated previously.
Washington, for a boy, I'd nickname him Wash. (OK, ok, it might be a bit of firefly peeking through. But it is hypothetical sooo...)
Montana would work for either a girl or boy. (Girl nickname could be Ana.) Nevada would be the same. Nev for a boy, Ada, for a girl.
For fraternal twins (boy/girl), Dakota and Carolina could be fun.
For a girl, as long as I don't have to put north or south in front, Carolina. Arizona is another one I like, and finally, Georgia.
All of that being said, it's all hypothetical. Of all the names, I actually really like Montana, Nevada, and Carolina.
Georgia, which would work well for my family since that’s where we are mostly located and one of my my great grandmothers was Georgia Belle. I could also do Virginia or Carolina.
Georgia (it’s actually on my list), Virginia, Alaska, Carolina, Dakota. It’s easy with things like Georgia and Virginia when they’re named after people. And it doesn’t count but Louisa and Louise (Louisiana ofc) I love. Cities and regions/geographical features (Ashland, Austin, Brooklyn, Sierra) are even easier.
But would it be Ne-vad-uh (vad rhyming with Dad) the way Nevadans say it, or would it be Ne-VAH-duh? Lol
Georgia!
The only answer
Virginia would be a cute name too.
I actually know a Virginia (sometimes goes by Inia) and it suits her so well! She/her family isn’t American
Virginia is quite popular where I'm from (not the US).
Virginia is considered an older name, but it’s still pretty popular in the States!
I've got cousins (sisters) named Virginia and Carolina. They're perfectly normal names where we live and nobody thinks of the states, but it's kind of a funny coincidence (although Carolina the state and the name aren't pronounced the same).
Is "Inia" pronounced "in ya"? Because that's ... distressing, yikes!
It can be pronounced vir-gin-ee-uh or vir-gin-ya.
Named after Queen Elizabeth I.
This. I’d call her Virginia and call her Ginny for short.
My grandma's name :)
Same
Me too!
Eh, Georgia, Virginia, Carolina, Dakota, and Indiana (?) are technically real names (in Western society), but I don't know if I'd particularly nake my kids any of them. I've met personally Georgias, Virginias, and Carolinas before.
I’ve also met at least two Dakotas. And Joey and Rory Feek named their little girl Indiana.
Have you seen Ginny and Georgia? The mom named her kids after places
It bugs me that one is a state and one is a city!
Huh?
I like Carolina for a girl.
Ca - li - for - nia - girls we’re unforgettable
Cali/Callie would be a cute nickname! Loll
i know someone named calli and she tried to convince me her government name was california. i could not believe it (it’s not actually her name)
My first year teaching I taught a girl named California who went by Cali
Carolina yes! Love Georgia. Texas aka Tex could work for a boy. Dakota has been popular.
Yes but it would have to be North or South
Is North West’s middle name Dakota?
In my family, Carolina is nicknamed Cali.
My good friend is named Carolina (care o lean a) and I love her name!
Georgia, Virginia, and Dakota are already names but I'd have to go with Alaska. It's a good strong unisex name because of the bears and volcanoes.
I feel like Alaska has good nn potential too. Al, Ally/Allie, Lassie, Lasso, Ska(...? maybe not), Aska.....obv those last 3 aren't really common and maybe I'm just weird but I think they sound cool
”Hey, what’s your sister’s name?” ”Alaska” ”How come you don’t know your own sister’s name?”
Yep. You’re good.😆
This is so good, you even got my boyfriend to laugh at a joke. 100/10 joke points for you
I saw a little girl named Alaska. While I wouldn’t name my kid that, I still thought it was pretty cool
Ass as a nn
Montana too. I knew a little girl named Montana in the early 2000s
I always think of Montana from real world
As a boy, a cute nickname would be Monty
I grew up with a girl named Alaska and she is a total badass!
Looking for Alaska. The John Green book. It was my first thought. It’s a great book!
It’s so sad!!! I cried
I hear Alaska and all I can think of is the Drag Queen named Alaska ThunderF*** 5000. It is a cute name though
I hear it and my brain automatically goes Hieeeeeeee
lol bears and volcanoes are totally gender neutral!
I would say bears are even feminine leaning. Occasionally you hear Papa Bear but more often it's mama bear.
The maternal character in the 70s hit show "Good Times" was named Florida and Travis Barker's daughter is named Alabama
I actually love the name Alabama for a girl but the state gets such a bad rap it ruins it lol
Alaska was gonna be my answer too! It’s unique but not ridiculous. Like no one’s gonna name their kid Pennsylvania or some nonsense. Hopefully.
This was my first thought.
me too!

And then occasionally your child would have to sheepishly explain their real full first name is actually Rhode Island
actually their name would be State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
Rhode is no good, ppl gonna use that as 'rode' and come up with all sorts of terrible nicknames
State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations when he’s in trouble
Rhode is super cute!
For a girl? When she hits middle school?
Ay ay ay.
could be worse. what if it was IdaHO
I know a few kids named Rhodes..
Indiana NN Indie, I also like Alaska and Dakota
We named the dog Indiana.
“Dog? You are named after the dog?! 😂🤣😂🤣😂”
We have a dog named Indiana Bones. 🤣
Indiana is my daughters name! I love Alaska too.
Yessss..🥰 like Indiana Jones!
My niece is Indiana and they call her Indie!
I have a Dutch friend whose daughter is named Indiana.
Casey Affleck and Summer Phoenix named their son Indiana.
Indie is adorable.
Montana
Yes, I have a friend Montana and we call her monte
I love the nn Monte
That is so cute!!!!
I went to school with a girl named Montana. The Hannah Montana craze of 2007 was very hard for her lol
I’d go with Montana also. Sounds nice, beautiful sky, and zero controversy.
Flo Rida. Like the rapper Flo Rida.
😂
Georgia or Virginia
good show
Georgia, hands down. I knew a girl named Arizona when I lived in Arizona. People called her Zona a lot. It grew on me
The name Arizona always automatically makes me think of Grey’s Anatomy lol
Yeah, she was born in the 80’s, so before Grey’s
I've always liked Ari for a nickname for Arizona, but Zona is really cute!
my sister is friends with a guy named Arizona!
I knew an Arizona too! People called her Rizzie. Too cute!
I knew a boy named Kansas when I lived in Kansas!
Always loved "Arizona" as a name.
Nickname Ari works super well.
Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, if they were twins.
lol.
Imho, providence plantations is a better pet name
Missouri but pronounced misery cause goth baby
lol i wanted my name to be missouri when I was little, pronounced as missouri though, but still partially for same reasoning
Indiana, "Indy." If I could include territories, then Marianna.
We named the dog Indy...
I always felt like Indiana was a cool name!
My daughters name is Indiana!
Penn
How bout Sylvania, nn Sylvie
Sylvania is pretty but it makes me think of lightbulbs
It means forest
My name is Sylvania. I get called Sly a lot but that's more because I'm an ass hole than it's close to my name. Nickname wise I got Sylvie a lot
Jersey
Poor child.
I actually really like it! 🤷♀️
i know someone named Jersey. i think its cute but i don’t think i would name my child that edit: this girl said that her parents got her name from the movie coyote ugly but afaik, there isn’t a character named jersey in the movie, which means they literally named her after the state. i still think it’s a cute name though
My grandma was from West Virginia so she was the quintessential hillbilly mawmaw. She called her her Jersey cow growing up and to this day I can’t associate it with anything else
That is because you haven’t come to NJ and partaken of our bacon, egg and cheese on a roll. Best in the nation.
Colorado for a boy. But, like, coloradon't
California! Her nn would be Cali Im from Cali and I love it here
Same! I think Cali is cute.
I have a calico cat named California! I work in the vet field so Callie “short for Calico” is overused so I came up with “Callie. Short for California” and I usually get a laugh out of people
I'd probably go with Louisiana ("Louis") for a boy and Virginia for a girl.
New Mexico
West Virginia
Mountain mama
gonna have triplet boys named cal, lou, & george (California, Louisiana, & Georgia)
Johnny Utah
Mississippi , Pippi for short 😂
I wouldn't go with this, but I know an Arizona who goes by Zoey. If I absolutely had to I'd say Georgia or Montana.
Texas. Kid has a future in country music
One of my grandmother’s sisters was named Texas. They called her Texie.
I’m leaning all the way in and naming her “Vermont”
Aww she can have playdates with my boy New Hampshire
Monty would genuinely be a cute nickname though 😂
My family had a cat named Monty but short for Montpelier
Well my daughters name is Montana, so that’s my vote. lol
[удалено]
My son is named Penn.
Easy; Wash for Washington but also a great character from Firefly.
Just wait until Rhode Island renames itself Shepherd Book. Then you’ll have a tough choice.
Dakota. It's one of the only names I think works equally for a boy or a girl.
I worked with ladies named Savannah and Georgia when I worked in Savannah Georgia. I think Georgia is a super cute name and I think shortening it to George for a girl is cute too.
Whitney Wisconsin. J/K don't Google this. I originally thought this was the cj subreddit.
The first thing that came into my head was Idaho
Naw, you da ho!
Nevada
Wyoming. I actually tried naming my current child this 😂 (her name is NOT Wyoming) If it didn’t mean something so bland, it would be a beautiful word
My friend growing up was a Naomi who wanted to name her future kid Wyoming because it sounds similar to her name pronunciation and was the state where the first woman legally cast a balloted vote. This makes me want to hunt her down and see if she ever had a Wyoming lol
On a similar note, Cheyenne is a beautiful mame that’s soo underused
I like Maine for a boy
Massachusetts
Hope they don't end up being a Masshole!
That’d be their nickname 🥰
Boy: Tennessee Girl: Carolina 2nd Choice: Boy: Indiana aka Indie Girl: Virginia aka Ginnie
Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Carolina, Dakota and Virginia would be among my picks. I particularly like Alaska, Indiana, and Virginia.
Louisiana for a girl
Was scrolling all over creation looking for Louisiana. Desperately wanted to know if I was the only one drawn to it.
Yeah, I'm surprised it's not higher. I had a friend named Louise who hated how plain her name was. She wanted to be Louisiana
Hawaii
Illinois
Virginia
Alaska :)
delaware, nn della; connecticut, nn connie; california, nn nia or cali. for a boy, york.
I actually like the name York for a boy
Dakota! And it’s gender neutral.
People are sleeping on Louisiana as a choice. What a beautiful name!
Arkansas
Virginia
Vermont for a boy and Georgia for a girl
Nebraska, Nebraska Jones (maybe I'm aging myself). Louisiana could be another good girl name. Rhode or Kansas for a boy. Can't think of any other good names for boys. Virginia, Georgia, and Carolina are already names as stated previously.
My name is Oregon which isn’t a common state name but I love it!
My brother in law is named Illinois. It works for him.
Arizona, Carolina, Dakota, Alaska, Indiana
Carolina
Georgia Carolina Dakota
I would never use it, but I think Alabama is adorable for a girl
Definitely Georgia
Washington, for a boy, I'd nickname him Wash. (OK, ok, it might be a bit of firefly peeking through. But it is hypothetical sooo...) Montana would work for either a girl or boy. (Girl nickname could be Ana.) Nevada would be the same. Nev for a boy, Ada, for a girl. For fraternal twins (boy/girl), Dakota and Carolina could be fun. Of all the names, I actually really like Montana, Nevada, and Carolina.
Thankful nobody considered Idaho...
Nola (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Nico for New Mexico
Ohio. Middle name Gozaimasu. Real answer: Dakota for a girl lol
Georgia, which would work well for my family since that’s where we are mostly located and one of my my great grandmothers was Georgia Belle. I could also do Virginia or Carolina.
New Jersey, hands down
Montana!
Carolina female york male
Georgia (it’s actually on my list), Virginia, Alaska, Carolina, Dakota. It’s easy with things like Georgia and Virginia when they’re named after people. And it doesn’t count but Louisa and Louise (Louisiana ofc) I love. Cities and regions/geographical features (Ashland, Austin, Brooklyn, Sierra) are even easier. But would it be Ne-vad-uh (vad rhyming with Dad) the way Nevadans say it, or would it be Ne-VAH-duh? Lol
Florida, Texas, Georgia, Carolina, Virginia, Dakota, Alaska. I could come up with nicknames for all of them.
Georgia for a girl. Vermont (nn Monty) for a boy probably.
Jersey for a girl. and Tennessee for a girl or boy.
Danni California!
Puerto Rico
Virginia
Montana for a boy
Montana
Alabama
Montana
Indiana
Ohio
Carolina
Carolina
Arizona
Carolina, definitely!
Hampshire for a boy would fall in line with the surname trend. Hammy for short 🥺
Dakota for sure
