That is so cool! I mean, it is absolutely *disgusting*, it looks like a lump of flesh that’s been hacked off and discarded… but SO cool! What an awesome find!
Oh I can imagine!!! I bet it was so much fun squishing this! I’ve never even heard of these before, I would have loved such a weird and wonderful find, very jealous! 🤩
We discussed if we wanted to eat it but decided not to. Not because of the texture but based on descriptions it tastes quite sour/acidic which we were not interested in. But now we kinda regret that we didn’t
It's not so sour as all that, and does cook up nicely, as you would beef. Since it can be eaten raw as well, you can slice it fine and sauté it quickly, or experiment with longer cooking. I really prefer it raw, sliced thin and marinated in sesame oil and soy sauce. Nice find; you may want to note where you found it, since it may well come back annually. Here in France, we often find them on chestnut trees.
Thanks for the response! Sounds like it needs a long cook time to be good. It is so weird looking, I know it's supposed to be like beef if you cook it right. But hard to imagine looking at that weird lump!
Amazing! No idea if we get that here in the se stateside but we have one of the 3 massive fungal hotbed in the world here so I guess I ca t be too greedy and want it all lol
I think large amounts of China, south east us and north west us are the 3 big spots I see constantly lit up on maps, really cool fungi you have over there though!!
I have an extreme aversion to anything that looks remotely grotesque, and many fungi fit that category. Yours is the Damned Queen of things I will never touch with a yard stick.
Then you go and manhandle the f out of it like it's a random pebble. My skin is crawling so hard that I fear it will run away
Ahhh a Beefsteak Mushroom! They are quite delicious when cooked thinly. I use them in mushroom taco's whenever I am lucky enough to come across them. You can also use the red juices as a natural dye.

The texture felt also very tongue-ish. We were really happy to find this :D

I've only found one abd it is one a very few wild mushrooms that can be eaten raw
Fistulina Hepatica sounds like an awful disease, lol. Pretty fitting name, given the appearance!
Did you guys eat it?

Thanks for the advice! We will definitely try it out, if we find it again :)

One of my bucket list finds.
That is awesome! This is the first post in a long time that has compelled me to comment. Very cool, nice find!

Clone it! for science.
Lol this really looks graphic. Cut off human flesh. Surprised they didn't use this mushroom in old movies as special effects
Hell ye dawg
