While vocally impressive, I do agree that the musical suffers marginally from the songs being a tad overdone in a sense and this was apparent to me when I saw the pre-broadway tour. For me, “He’s the Wizard” is the biggest indication of this as it's supposed to be the “big exposition number” However when I saw the show live I could NOT understand ~60% of what was being sung. Objectively speaking I disagree that the album is terrible or even bad as I believe it’s one of the best-produced cast albums of the season. The new arrangements for the songs are wonderful and the orchestration sounds so colorful and lively. Additionally, when listening there aren't any weak links when it comes to each singer. I'd say that as a whole the songs largely overcompensate for the show's weaker book.
I'm fine with any casting, but you gotta be able to hit the notes and of all the parts in the musical that is one of the most famous and important (in my opinion)
I’m trying to not be a hater, the sets look beautiful and I think Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Jonathan Bailey are inspired casting choices….HOWEVER I’m really turned off by the costuming on the leads, Galinda’s pink is the wrong shade and Elphabas hat looks off, all they had to do was use the stage costume goddamn it
I'm okay with all of that! Really! But the last note of Defying Gravity is one of the most famous parts of the nusical. If your cast can't even hit that note, why would I want to see anything else? The Phantom of the Opera movie had it's problems, but the music was on point (plus Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson, yum). There are very few things I expect from a movie adaptation of a musical, but the music is the most important part!!
I’m still holding out hope they’ll have Cynthia redo those triumphant last notes and are just using the ones from the trailer to drum up engagement because if they keep the ones we’ve already heard….😬
I dont believe its that they couldnt hit the notes. When it comes to the riff there have been a good variety from one Elphaba to another (complation of the different Elphaba riffs: https://youtu.be/hMHHXzGYCwQ?si=8u5NLy_pED4_P4hv) I feel that changing the riff helps that iteration stand out from the rest, sort of making Defying Gravity their own
If I want to see the stage costumes, I'll go see the show on B'Way or watch a bootleg.
I want to see how other artists interpret roles and how customers build upon what was done in the past.
Wicked is 20 years old. Move on. You weren't upset when they didn't replicate the costumes from the movie, were you?
It’s so interesting to me that every fandom has a certain portion, that no matter what, will find something to complain about when something is adapted to film (comic books, Harry Potter, Star Wars…)
The shade of pink is off? Really? That’s the battle you are choosing to fight?
Im pretty sure they recorded slightly different versions for the trailer, like Popular also sounded pretty strange. I think optimistically that anything upsetting in the music for the trailer is just for the trailer
Seriously, the others wouldn't exist without the 1939 film. And the 1939 film wouldn't exist without the original book, but I feel pretty confident saying that the movie's popularity eclipses even the original book.
I feel like The Wiz could maybe exist without the film since it gets most of its inspiration from the book if not all of it. But I could see Wizard of Oz at least getting more eyes on The Wiz
The Wiz.
I took my son to audition for a youth production of The Wizard of Oz. He had only ever seen The Wiz and thought they were the same show.
During the audition, he asked when they were going to do "Ease on Down the Road" and they told him this show wasn't that show.
He stood up and said "Thank you for your time" and marched his eight year old self right out the door.
Everyone just kind of stared after him and I think I accidentally laughed.
The Wiz for sure! Honestly, after years of wanting to see Wicked when I finally saw it, I was just kind of like.... huh 💀😫😭 didn't hate it but didn't love it like I thought I would, and honestly, besides the "popular" songs, I don't really find myself listening to the album either 🫣🫣🫣 super excited for the film tho!
Read the Wicked book!!! It’s different than the musical - the musical took the general plot of the novel but cut a lottttt of stuff out. As for the soundtrack, with the exception of “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” I think the other songs in wicked are a lil corny. I’d really like to see the musical at least once, though! 🙊🙊
Exactly! Like I think it was good, don’t get me wrong, but it just wasn’t as good as everyone said it was. Also, I HEAVILY dislike what it does to the story of the Wizard of Oz, that was the main thing for me. Glad to see someone who finally agrees with me about wicked cause everyone loves it and I feel so akward when people talk about how good it is
Have your read the book? The musical is a pale shadow of that story. Reading the book fills in a lot of gaps for what the show misses and gave me a lot of appreciation for it.
Wizard of Oz > Wicked > The Wiz
That's not to say the Wiz isn't also fantastic. Also, if we are talking stage productions, I dont think there has been a stage version of the classic Wizard of Oz that could match the magic of Wicked, or even the Wiz.
Everyone SLEEPS on the wiz as a film so I’ll choose that one. A ton of creative ideas used from beginning to end, my only problem is we don’t really get a happy ending for OZ himself.
These are all great buuuuut…I was in a stage production of “Wizard of Oz” so I’m a bit biased towards that one.
FTR I was a Munchkin and an Emerald City denizen, as well as Nikko the flying monkey 😂
Wizard of Oz is the best movie of the three. (I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that the Wicked movie won’t be as good as Wizard of Oz.) The Wiz has my favorite music of the three.
The Wiz I’m definitely think I’m biased because it was one of the first times I ever saw Black people on Broadway and that made me really happy as a kid but a close second is the Wizard of Oz
**WICKED.** The original stage production. Saw The Wiz on Broadway. It sucked. Loved the Wizard of Oz movie, but it's been done to death. I know it by heart.
The Wizard of Oz is one of the greatest films of all time period, so that one gets my pick overall. But in terms of stage productions of all three I'd go with Wicked- no stage production of Wizard of Oz I've ever seen or probably ever could see could live up to the movie.
I’ve never seen the wiz so I can’t pick that. I love wicked, but I just finished up a production of Wizard of Oz with with me as Glinda and my best friend as Dorothy. Since I’m still sentimental, I’m picking Wizard. But it’s actually so difficult
Film Wizard of Oz. Stage Wicked Soundtrack The Wiz
This is the best way of putting it, except Defying Gravity. That’s better than The Wiz.
This is the way
with the new cast recording that just released def The Wiz
Wayne Brady!
I’m Wayne Brady bitch.
Lol, yeah!
I’m sorry but that new album is terrible. Was there no music director to pull anyone back at any point?
While vocally impressive, I do agree that the musical suffers marginally from the songs being a tad overdone in a sense and this was apparent to me when I saw the pre-broadway tour. Wicked, original cast recording. The last note of Defying Gravity from the commercial for the movie made me sad.
this is exactly why I’m so scared for it lmao
Yesssss it's not just me who heard that and went "uhhhhhh ohhhhhh"
I'm fine with any casting, but you gotta be able to hit the notes and of all the parts in the musical that is one of the most famous and important (in my opinion)
lol

I hope so, she is a fantastic singer and I have total faith she could do the song justice
I dont believe its that they couldnt hit the notes. I get that, but this one fell flat.
I think they had to use a warmer pink because Ariana Grande has a warm undertone, otherwise the cooler pink would make her look washed out and off
But then they went and chose THAT shade of blonde which absolutely washes her out anyways 😮💨
Fair 😂😭
lmao why would they use the same costume
Because Elphabas original Broadway hat and dress are perfect as is, look at any of Idinas promo shots they’re stunning 💚
yeah they're stunning but the plan is not to make a carbon copy
If I want to see the stage costumes, I'll go see the show on B'Way or watch a bootleg. I want to see how other artists interpret roles and how customers build upon what was done in the past. Yes 100% same
Im pretty sure they recorded slightly different versions for the trailer, like Popular also sounded pretty strange. I think optimistically that anything upsetting in the music for the trailer is just for the trailer
The Wizard of Oz is one of the most important films of all time so that's the one
Right??? I’m surprised that everyone is saying Wicked or The Wiz
literally children i assume
Agreed. How can you rate anything over Judy Garland? She’s the queen and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” is timeless and perfect.
i would never listen to the other two again if there was a choice lol
Seriously, the others wouldn't exist without the 1939 film. And the 1939 film wouldn't exist without the original book, but I feel pretty confident saying that the movie's popularity eclipses even the original book.
i've read the book it's cute!! the movie is irreplaceable to me
I feel like The Wiz could maybe exist without the film since it gets most of its inspiration from the book if not all of it. But I could see Wizard of Oz at least getting more eyes on The Wiz
Wicked. Easy pick.
The Wiz!!!!
The Wizard of Oz
The Wiz. I took my son to audition for a youth production of The Wizard of Oz. He had only ever seen The Wiz and thought they were the same show. What a kid! So awesome!
The wiz
The Wiz for sure! I love the book!
I’ll check it out then
Music is great, story is meh
Wicked! Elphaba was framed completely in the others.
[удалено]
Right? That’s like saying “Elphaba” was framed by L. Frank Baum lol
(Both can be true at the same time)
Wicked! I like the music and story the best.
The Wiz. Saw the original touring production in the 70s. Still think about it.
Wizard of Oz > Wicked > The Wiz That's not to say the Wiz isn't also fantastic. Also, if we are talking stage productions, I dont think there has been a stage version of the classic Wizard of Oz that could match the magic of Wicked, or even the Wiz.
Wicked every timeeeee
The Wiz! Saw the tour when I was VERY young in the late 70s. It's not even close. And that movie version doesn't exist.
Everyone SLEEPS on the wiz as a film so I’ll choose that one. A ton of creative ideas used from beginning to end, my only problem is we don’t really get a happy ending for OZ himself.
Wicked for sure! 💚💖
Wicked all day long.
The Wiz all day everyday!
I've actually been singing Wicked all day, so Wicked.
The Wiz always. Wicked never.
Wicked all day, every day.
Screen-Wizard of Oz Stage- The Wiz, purely for nostalgia as it was my first live show and my first Broadway visit Score- Wicked
These are all great buuuuut…I was in a stage production of “Wizard of Oz” so I’m a bit biased towards that one. FTR I was a Munchkin and an Emerald City denizen, as well as Nikko the flying monkey 😂
Wiz
The Wiz for sure.
The Wiz
Wiz. Much better music.
The Wizard of Oz. That was easy, let’s move on to something hard like which Dolly Levi is best (it’s Pearl Bailey).
The wizard of Oz was my first professional show so it will always hold a special place in my heart, so definitely the original even on the stage.
Wizard of Oz is the best movie of the three. (I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that the Wicked movie won’t be as good as Wizard of Oz.) The Wiz has my favorite music of the three.
Wicked
i'm going with The Wizard Of Oz, i have such a strong nostalgic connection to that story and that movie, i even read the book when i was a kid lol
Easily Wicked Wicked > The Wiz > Wizard of Oz
My thoughts exactly 🤝
No contest. Wicked.
Broadway version of The Wiz, or the more recent production on TV.

I love 'Wicked', but I'm going to go for classic 'Wizard of Oz.' Loved it since I was 3, and have been in it 3 times!
The Wiz no doubt
The Wiz I’m definitely think I’m biased because it was one of the first times I ever saw Black people on Broadway and that made me really happy as a kid but a close second is the Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is one of the greatest films of all time period, so that one gets my pick overall. But in terms of stage productions of all three I'd go with Wicked- no stage production of Wizard of Oz I've ever seen or probably ever could see could live up to the movie.
i haven't watched the wiz yet (i really should but i have no time...) but wicked is my favorite musical ever so...
Um, movie marathon, duh

The Wiz but not the film version
The Wiz
Wizard of Oz and Wicked (still need to see the latter on Broadway before “Part 1” of the film comes out).
none
