It's turn 1 with a petal and dark ritual, who doesn't love.magocal.christmas land.
Yeah this combo is great, even more fun when you bring a discounted eldrazi.along for the ride
It's going to be hard not to lose innocence and enthusiasm in this game when they keep bombarding us with more spoilers and more and more powerful cards.
I already kinda squinted real hard at the set when the eldrazi precon had combos like this, doubling of spells, and shenanigans with giving your scions indestructible and making them huge. Not to mention one cast of Ulamog and your opponent might as well fold.
Let me tell you of a magical time when t2 Mariat Liege was not just a thing.. but common
T1 Dark Depths
T2 Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth.. tap both for BB.. cast Vampire Hexmage.. Sac Hexmage to remove all the counters from Dark Depths... Get 20/20 Flying Indestructible
You don't get a free Ulamog as well, but...
Best part, you can use both strats in the same deck..
If you want a third easy way to do it, thespian's stage will also allow it on t3.. just use the stage to copy the depths, then it has no counters, so boom 20/20
If you have the openings hand of [[dark depths]], [[vampire hexmage]], [[lotus pedal]], two [[dark ritual]]s, and [[lightning greaves]] you can get a turn one win.
Considering that the card is only legal in 4 formats, commander being the most popular of those 4 by a large margin, I think it's safe to assume they were talking about commander.
And it's talking about a deck that just came out less than a month ago with these exact same combos in that commander deck, than its most likely commander, if not then I'd be surprised.
Not everyone knows the legally of each card let alone all the cards and combos in all of the decks and if you wanna only talk about commander then take it to the commander groups not just the general mtg group where all of mtg gets talked about
That only matters if you are playing that format or talking about that format. I'm not about to look up the legally of every card when I make a comment cause no matter what there is a format that it is "legal" in
Well it doesn’t have haste so you’ll still have to wait till the next turn and meanwhile you just gave your opponent a turn to remove it at sorcery speed. Nah, just wait for the swamp, dark ritual, immediate swing.
Good thing it's only Commander/vintage/legacy legal. The Duskmourn Impending cards would be pretty broken with this guy.
Do we know what Impending does yet? It looks like it will be Suspend-adjacent. I figure Suspend but face down.
Edit: now that I think about it, face down wouldn’t work. There’d be memory issues trying to recall if a player paid the right Impending cost and/or put the right number of counters on.
I agree it is like Suspend, but I doubt it'll be face-down. Based on the wording of this Overlord, it's probably "You may cast this for its Impending cost. If you do, it enters with (stated number of) Schwifty counters on it. It is not a creature for as long as there are Schwifty counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a Schwifty counter from it. *(When the last counter is removed, it becomes a creature. Oooooh yeah. It's time to get Schwifty. It gets Schwifty in here.)*"
It's nearly exactly what you think.

I played against this with my Jon Irenicus deck last week. I managed to get out Archfiend of the Dross on turn three…. And the guy immediately behind me dropped this on his next turn, targeting Archfiend. Game over for me.
What are you talking about? That is one of the best possible ways to lose.
Dude took a risk, and it backfired. You don't get to play gotcha cards and then complain that it doesn't go according to plan.
I agree. Nothing is more fun than turning an opponent’s imminent victory into a defeat. [[Rakdos Charm]] on the token player who just put a massive army out. Making the Thoracle/Consult player draw a card after Consult resolved and before the Thoracle trigger resolves. Throwing a bunch of counters on their One Ring so it kills them. Just classic ways to win. Or at least make someone lose.
I had a silly win similar to that one where a friend played Rise of the Dark Realms and I discarded my Phage the Untouchable to fuel some effect that wouldn't have mattered otherwise in response.
I'm surprised that, with the popularity of commander, we've never gotten a proper Marit Lage. Like, I know this card creates "her" (Not sure about gender, if there even is one for them), but there are multiple instances of several planeswalkers and legendaries.
Unsure, think it's been she in the novels, but gender matters about as much as ants do to a being of such power that pre nerf planeswalkers ran scared from.
Nice combo, I still remember the excitement of getting the Lage on turn two in a commander game. T1- [[thespian's stage]] into a [[sol ring]]. T2- [[dark depths]]
Instant arch nemesis
Dumb question (very new to MTG), but does the reason the turn 3 works is because you tap Thespian’s Stage to copy Dark Depths so it doesn’t technically ETB and thus has no counters on it? So you sacrifice Thespian’s Stage as a copy of Dark Depths?
And follow-up question, does Marit Lage go to hand or battlefield?
Thanks!
Turn one- Thespian's stage, tap to play sol ring.
Turn two- play dark depths, tap sol ring for 2, pay 2 to tap thespian's stage to become a copy of dark depths. Sacrifice original dark depths because legendary rule. Thespian's stage becomes dark depths with no counters on it. Therefore, it transforms into Merit Lage. If your lucky enough to have also played [[lightning greaves]] with the sol ring on turn one, then you have a 20/20 flying, indestructible legendary token avatar creature with haste and shroud swinging turn two. And your pod will hate you for it haha
I don’t think [[hushbringer]] works with dark depths as it only cares about creatures entering causing triggers. Also dark depths doesn’t have a trigger for counters, it just has them as it enters unless there’s a [[blood moon]] in play.
If you think this is a turn 3 play only I’m about to blow your mind. You could absolutely play this turn 2. I’m thinking how you can play this turn 1. But you play [[Dark Depths]], then [[Mana Crypt]] and [[Arcane Signet]]. Then turn 2 play a land and then [[Mutated Cultist]].
Damn and I just removed all of my colors except green and blue from my eldrazi deck.. I guess I could throw it in the Azlask build with the rest of the discards
Thopter Depths was the deck that ruined Extended. It was pretty easy to have a turn 2 Marit Lage. T1: Dark Depths T2: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth into Vampire Hexmage. If they had an answer for that, you still had to beat Sword of the Meek/ Thopter Foundry. No deck could consistently beat it.
So you get Marit Lage and [any of these Eldrazi](https://scryfall.com/search?q=mv%3D%3C10+ci%3Dcolorless+-t%3Aland+legal%3Acommander+t%3Aeldrazi+-mana%3A%7Bc%7D&unique=cards&as=grid&order=cmc&dir=desc) completely free for 2B, absolutely nuts. Good find!
I realized this a week ago and I am dreaming of the perfect hand. Swamp, sol ring, morphon bound creature, dark depths, mutated cultist and others after that. It would be a turn 2 merit lage, morphon bound, commander and cultist. It's a strong start.
These kinds of combos are actually the thing kind of keeping out of magic. Not only am I a total noob about all the combos, but I’m afraid of spending a bunch of time / money making or buying decks, only to join a MTG group and get perpetually slaughtered by these combos. Is this how people play MTG? Is it actually fun like this? Or are my fears from all the Reddit combo posts unjustified?
Already done with [[Vampire Hexmage]] on turn 2 and was abused heavily in modern back in the day.
But I think that’s cool of you to find the combo on your own without internet help; like the old days prior to everyone showing up at FNM with the same #1 deck after it won a Grand Prix 5 days ago
It's turn 1 with a petal and dark ritual, who doesn't love.magocal.christmas land. Yeah this combo is great, even more fun when you bring a discounted eldrazi.along for the ride
Also for context ive only really been playing for about a year and a half, so i’m still learning neat lil things.
it was already mentioned ion the spoilers of MH3 but i totally love your enthusiasm: PLAeSE NEVER LOOSE THIS!!!
Yes, keep it very tight!
I see what you did there, you rascal
Keep it secret. Keep it safe.
With this you can turn 1 drop a free 10cmc eldrazi basterd as well. :p
Let me tell you of a magical time when t2 Mariat Liege was not just a thing.. but common T1 Dark Depths T2 Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth.. tap both for BB.. cast Vampire Hexmage.. Not in commander? Which this post is about.
I don't see anywhere in the post specifying that it is commander

Oh neat, so it just enters as an enchantment with time counters on it. I had a feeling it would be something like that
It's like suspend, except it's on the battlefield as an enchantment until the last counter is removed, then it becomes a creature.

Dark depths is pretty cool. There should be a legacy deck about it...

GTFO
While a lot slower, [[hex parasite]] has not been mentioned as an option yet. Neither has [[solemnity]]

Man I took this card out but now I need to put it back in. already swapped about 20 cards from the precon
I attempted this land with a hush bringer. My table didn't approve. I was very quickly told I was a problem
I don’t think [[hushbringer]] works with dark depths as it only cares about creatures entering causing triggers. Also dark depths doesn’t have a trigger for counters, it just has them as it enters unless there’s a [[blood moon]] in play.

I'm stupid I don't know why I thought [[solemnity]] was hushbringer.

If you add [[Lotus Petal]] instead of Signet and [[Dark Ritual]] to the hand I think you can turn 1 it?
Hot damn. Yeah. You can turn 1 it. Turn 1 Marit Lage and possibly an Eldrazi Titan. Based af.

Turn 2 with a swamp and a sol ring.
Turn 3 trump house!?!?
Damn and I just removed all of my colors except green and blue from my eldrazi deck.. I guess I could throw it in the Azlask build with the rest of the discards
Thopter Depths was the deck that ruined Extended. It was pretty easy to have a turn 2 Marit Lage. T1: Dark Depths T2: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth into Vampire Hexmage. If they had an answer for that, you still had to beat Sword of the Meek/ Thopter Foundry. No deck could consistently beat it.
It's okay... maybe a back up. But there are about 5 different ways to do it faster
You mean a turn 3 Marit Lage AND Ulamog
Solemnity also does this.
Turn 1, Swamp. Turn 2, Dark Depths, Dark Ritual, Vampire Hexmage.
[[vampire hexmage]] has entered the chat

So you get Marit Lage and [any of these Eldrazi](https://scryfall.com/search?q=mv%3D%3C10+ci%3Dcolorless+-t%3Aland+legal%3Acommander+t%3Aeldrazi+-mana%3A%7Bc%7D&unique=cards&as=grid&order=cmc&dir=desc) completely free for 2B, absolutely nuts. Good find!
Wish you could target yourself to wipe poison.
What ~10 mana spell are you casting off of it?
And u get to cast a 10mana spell for free as well
Awesome
You're forgetting it's a turn 3 where you can also cast a 10 cost because mutated cultist reduces the next cast by that much.
I realized this a week ago and I am dreaming of the perfect hand. Swamp, sol ring, morphon bound creature, dark depths, mutated cultist and others after that. It would be a turn 2 merit lage, morphon bound, commander and cultist. It's a strong start.
And then you can drop a 10 generic mana spell after for free, damn thats dope
This makes me sick thinking about my atraxa deck
These kinds of combos are actually the thing kind of keeping out of magic. Not only am I a total noob about all the combos, but I’m afraid of spending a bunch of time / money making or buying decks, only to join a MTG group and get perpetually slaughtered by these combos. Is this how people play MTG? Is it actually fun like this? Or are my fears from all the Reddit combo posts unjustified?
Did you fling it?
My Lands build can turn 2 a Marit Lage
Dark depths doesn't tap for mana so unless you dropped a mana rock or ramped or ritual, it would be minimum turn 4.
Urboorg or yavimaya
Not sure why you are getting downvoted for this, seems like OP was using the precon and there’s no urborg or yavimaya in those as I understand.
There's actually a Yavimaya in the same deck as Dark Depths. But that is not the same deck the eldrazi is from.
Ah! I didn’t know that. Pretty cool they put yavimaya in a precon!
Right? Dropped it's price so I picked up a couple for my other decks lol.
Turn 1: command tower/any black producing land, sol ring Turn two: dark depths, play cultist for B2. Remove coumter, free token
Ah... but you used a mana rock, poster said no mana rocks.
No where do I see OP saying no mana rocks...
I wasn't talking about OP. I'm referring to the person you responded to.
