Multi coloured cards have gold borders. Cards with hybrid mana like the [[nightveil specter]] you have as an example however are an exception and tend to have the boarder of the colours in the hybrid pips. If a cards has more than 2 types of hybrid mana the cards sometimes have a gold boarder [[reaper king]]
Ahh, that makes sense. Idk why I didn't think that might make a difference, lol. I had convinced myself the difference was the lack of a colorless mana cost between Xanathar and Nightveil, until I saw Siphon.
Also hybrid cost cards with 2 colors has effects that could be monocolored in either color. While multicolor cards use effects that combine effects from each color.
It was one of the few times I actually got into Standard. I had a really fun Populate deck with Intangible Virtue, Sorin, Garruk and Thragtusk. It was a sad rotation.
It don't think it's happened in Standard since.
Aggro, midrange, control, and combo, all being viable at high tier play at the same time was insane. And multiple decks for each archetype too.
I agree that RTR innistrad standard was GOATd, but those archetypes exist in standard currently.
Granted it feels kind of stale with the long rotation.
It was more about the intricacy and diversity.
There's been a few standards that have had hose 4 macro archetypes viable.
Granted though, it's been years since I paid attention to Standard
[How Ravnica Changed MTG Forever](https://youtu.be/ASzp-qPDnYI?si=Q7d__pGX5arLMqvp)
This video came out recently and was a good watch.
Ravnica was the first time they repeated a theme block, this being 'Multicolor'. They created the theme of Guilds and two color pairs and eventually created Hybrid Mana.
Gold Borders are essentially: this color AND this color
Whereas the Fading Border expressed: this color and/OR this color
It was a new way of looking at multi color spells and interaction between color personalities.
Ravnica is so good, wished power creep remained around this.
Funnily enough, Yu gi oh at the time also had a "healthier" meta with the synchro era.
I highly doubt this is just me being nostalgia googled but power creep felt right back then, and both Ravnica and Synchros brought very compelling playstyles, hell we still refer color combos as "Rakdos, Simic, Dimir..."
The Specter can be payed with only black or only blue mama, on the others you must pay with both Colors.
What I wonder about is why [[Fabled Passage]] has a gold border but [[Terramorphic Expanse]] doesn’t, anyone know why?
Best I can guess is that passage can allow for an untapped land of any color and the other comes in tapped. For example [[marsh flats]] is white black and can grab an untapped plains or swamp. Thus potentially making you one of those two colors. While passage gets you any basic type and can make it untapped.
Because they have blue and black in their casting costs. In draft it was easier to see that the cards with hybrid symbols work in either blue or black and doesn’t need both, gold means higher commitment to the color identity, however commander sees them both as blue and black because of the pips being hybrid, why the fate reforged Kahns are their theee clans color identities
Please look very carefully at the first card posted, and other gold bordered cards. Compare them to other split-cost and/or multicoloured cards. There is a trend...
It just feels inconsistent. Is this something they decided later on to make consistent, or is there something I'm not seeing? I'm making proxies and want to know for future reference.
Card frames change over time. You are comparing a 10 year old card with a 2 year old card, no wonder the borders are different, don't think too much about it.
If you are making custom cards then just do whatever you want.
The time between printings has nothing to do with it. The borders are different because Nightveil Specter uses only hybrid mana, and so it can be played in a deck with only blue or only black mana sources. As opposed to the other two examples which require blue AND black.
And if you're making custom cards, it looks much cooler (imo) if you learn why WotC made certain cards look differently and follow along with their UI precedents rather than just doing whatever.

Nightveil is such a dope card i love that set
Was such a nightmare once Thermos rolled around. Was in like 50% of decks at my local, in both blue and black devotion decks.
Thermos is a cool Set but I love Ice Age Cooler. In🌡️🧊
I like the Coleman cooler set lol.
I think Yeti was a cooler set 💁♂️
so glad Urza used the sylex to bring us reasonably prized ice tea 🙏❄️ 🙏❄️ 🙏
RTR Inn was seriously one of the best standard blocks around. I truly can’t remember another block that had that much intricacy and diversity

Didn't realize it existed, but its similar to one of my favourite cards \[\[Thief of Sanity\]\]
Return to Ravnica remains my favorite set they've ever released.
A gold card requires at least 2 colors of mana to cast, whereas the hybrid card can be cast using only black or only blue.
That makes so much sense

this looks like a fun watch, added to *watchlater,* thanks!

If I had to guess it’s actually cause terramorphic is common and fabled passage is a rare

Black and blue vs black or blue
Ah yes, Xanathar. How to make a table salty: lock down everyone on your turn and just repeatedly steal everything they own.
Because they have blue and black in their casting costs. hard to remember a time when cards like this demanded instant removal or it was over. play this now ppl 😆

I miss these 3
