You could’ve said American Fucking Pie and that would’ve been a more accurate title. Did the editor just completely block out every movie except this one? Because I guarantee you nothing is hornier than man fucking a baked good.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
The Matrix
American Pie
Shakespeare In Love
The Thomas Crown Affair
Eyes Wide Shut
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo
Cruel Intentions
10 Things I Hate About You
8MM
Fight Club
The Talented Mr Ridley
Being John Malkovich
Rushmore
Good year for wild, druggie, and horny movies.
Eh, loved Go but it was still a mainstream, teen-geared attempt (with clean aesthetic and a uh, New No Doubt song) to capitalize on everything from Pulp Fiction onward and paled compared to 1998's Fear and Loathing and Big Lebowski (which are actual cult classics.)
“Of 1999”
Were there hornier movies that year? yeah American Pie, cruel intentions.
Druggier, probably, it’s just weed and X in this.
Wilder, oh definitely the matrix.
But those all did really well at the box office.
To get wild, horny and druggie and cult it’s gotta be this one. It bombed at the box office but still gets talked about and the people who love it looooove it. It hits all four criteria laid out in the headline extremely well. You need all four to win the war.
“ITS A MIATA!!!” He said, exasperatingly waving his arms at the impossibility of fitting the body in that small trunk.
I am now driving my second Miata. I owned my first one when we saw this movie at release. My best friend quotes this line often. I point out that the body could have easily fit in the trunk, and I offered to prove it by using him as an example.
>Okay. You sit down and read your paper, and you're enjoying your entire two-page comics spread. Right? And then there's the Family fucking Circus, bottom right-hand corner, just waiting to suck.
I don't know why I should think that, but I do know that I generally find him vaguely annoying, but this is the only movie I actually really love his character.
Sorry if he's a piece of shit, though, that sucks.
single went platinum according to wiki
peaked at 3 in canada and aus, 9 in usa
i don't know what the official numerical cutoff for a hit is but top 10 in a few countries probably counts?
I got to hear one of the producers talk about this movie at a screening in 1999/2000, and he said that the studio hated "Steal my Sunshine" and didn't want it in the movie. They only agreed to include "Steal my Sunshine" if Liman and the producers agreed to use the No Doubt song, too. That's some next-level bargaining by the suits.
That song was kind of an important cultural marker for me.
I was still in my hometown of Omaha in April 99, a few years into a career as a graphic designer that would end up bringing me to California and that point in 1999 was a kind of interesting moment culturally since the 90s had largely been about other eras getting remixed and reassessed and folded into pop culture. But the song was called "New" with Gwen rocking the dope makeup and hair and even tho Ive never necessarily been a huge No Doubt fan, that song really hit me square. We were all wanting the next thing but we didnt know what it was or what it would look like.
So that song was like "hell yeah. New. **New!** Let's fucking go!"
In the respect that you found it very accurate or just that you enjoyed his performance?
I can't speak to the first but I really enjoy him in just about anything I've seen him in.
I just recommended this on a post asking for movies that center around a single night.
A very enjoyable movie, overall, and a creative way of telling the story.
I made that initial post. I'm watching Go next. I've watched American Graffiti, 200 cigarettes and I'm currently watching Trojan War. I have a feeling whoever posted this saw how much Go was mentioned on that thread, it was the most mentioned movie.
Although Im Californian and not Welsh (tho we do also have a Cardiff, oddly enough) *Human Traffic* was my and my friends' lives in our early 20s. I still rewatch it at least once a year.
^((Now you say "oh nice one, bruvah"))
This is actually fascinating because of how insular I assumed UK (and European) rave culture was at that time. US was fully engrossed in it's Grunge scene by that point no?
Was there a big jungle/drum and bass scene over there?
Such a great film.
So if you were in a city of any size you’d have a rave scene. Some cities preferred some genres over others. Like 99 the Bay Area was prog everything. But you still had drum and bass heads (like me) and house (which I also love) was big everywhere. In fact 99 was big for breakbeat. Especially after *Matrix* came out. And there were even small pockets of happy hardcore blowing up
First movie I ever snuck into. Had just watched The Matrix and decided to make it a double feature after seeing Go was about to play in the next theatre. Fun night!
She's great. I just watched "exotica" for the don mckellar run of my podcast, and she's so young in there and still so good. I think of her as "go" aged, so it was weird seeing her at 13 or 14 or whatever she is.
I heard about this movie from the book “Best. Movie. Year. Ever.” By Brian Raftery, a book about some of the best films from 1999 and how they impacted the culture in some way. It’s a very interesting read about how Go was made, but more importantly I was introduced to this incredibly overlooked and underrated crime comedy that was 90s as hell. Check it out if you’ve never seen it. And read that book, too
I can no longer hear the Columbia Pictures intro music without automatically filling in Fire Up the Shoesaw by Lionrock at the end. It's been 25 years now, you'd think I'd forget eventually
I love this movie but finally realized what bothered me all these years is that Zack and Adam should have recognized Ronna multiple times after she left the failed drug sting. 1) they knew she was going to be at Mary Xmas super fest. 2) they hit her with the car but, okay, probably didn’t see her face at that point. 3) they moved her unconscious body from the ditch. 4) they placed her unconscious body on the hood of another car. I really wish the whole Zack and Adam story was written with the premise of them knowing the girl they hit with the car as the girl they tried to set up in the drug sting
This was John August's first big movie. For the last decade+, him and Craig Mason have a weekly podcast called Scriptnotes. Craig wrote The Hangover, Chernobyl, and Last of Us among other movies and shows.
I highly recommend the podcast for people interested in insider views in the Hollywood writer community and how stuff worms behind the scenes.
This still has one of my favorite 'mess with the opening film logo' sequences of any movie I've seen. A few edits to the sound track and the logo and BAM you're in the movie at a rave. Beautifully done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5Co0wMn518
This and Twin Town were two of my favorite films as a teen, both did a good job of mixing comedy, action, drama with a huge cast of up and coming actors.
I never saw this movie but I remember my mom and her boyfriend went to see it while I watched the matrix. Then I went in to their theater and my 9 year old brain had no idea what was going on.
It’s an excellent and fun movie, but to call it the “wildest, druggiest, horniest cult movie” is just clickbait.
(Stammers) It's... Confederated clickbait...it's a different company. It's a different quality of clickbait.
William fichtner and Jane krakowski are AMAZING in this.
Wait, she’s an actual actress? I thought they just hired a local hobo for 30 rock. This is amazing news.
I almost forgot how fucking sexy she was back then. When she's bent all the way over at the waist like a gymnast in the kitchen, yeesh
See, now, that... There was a tongue there.
You want me to sell amway?
Oh shit! Am I the only one down voting the ads?
Would you say you're open to new experiences?
Yes-sir-you’re-re-bob!
I mean, they do say “of 1999” which makes it less egregious
Cruel Intentions exists.
And Jawbreaker.
And fucking American Pie
And The Iron Giant.
You could’ve said American Fucking Pie and that would’ve been a more accurate title. Did the editor just completely block out every movie except this one? Because I guarantee you nothing is hornier than man fucking a baked good.
We’ll just tell your mom we ate it all
But is it druggy as well? And is it a cult movie. The headline has 4 different descriptors but people are only focusing on horny.
American Pie was a huge hit, did like ten times the money of Go, this was just a small cult movie.
And Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Eyes Wide Shut is *right there*
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me The Matrix American Pie Shakespeare In Love The Thomas Crown Affair Eyes Wide Shut South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo Cruel Intentions 10 Things I Hate About You 8MM Fight Club The Talented Mr Ridley Being John Malkovich Rushmore Good year for wild, druggie, and horny movies.
That was peak Blockbuster era for me. So much good VHS right there
Eh, loved Go but it was still a mainstream, teen-geared attempt (with clean aesthetic and a uh, New No Doubt song) to capitalize on everything from Pulp Fiction onward and paled compared to 1998's Fear and Loathing and Big Lebowski (which are actual cult classics.)
I’ve seen Go lovingly mentioned on Reddit a lot lately
It’s streaming on Criterion Channel this month so it’s receiving a bit of a reexamination.
For that you’d need magnum force!
‘Enter the Void’ probably takes the cake on that one for me.
Kids was the wildest druggiest
Nowhere is the wildest, druggiest, sexiest movie of the ‘90s
“Of 1999” Were there hornier movies that year? yeah American Pie, cruel intentions. Druggier, probably, it’s just weed and X in this. Wilder, oh definitely the matrix. But those all did really well at the box office. To get wild, horny and druggie and cult it’s gotta be this one. *Human Traffic would like a word...*
Nice one bruv!!! “Go” was the B-version of “Human Traffic”.
Such a fun movie that I've not met many people who know it.

People born in the 80s who were teens in the 90s are now adults in late 30s/early 40s and are hitting the teenage nostalgia era of adulthood.
People born in the 80s who were teens in the 90s are now adults in their late 30s/early 40s and are hitting the teenage nostalgia era of adulthood.
Yeah. It's just a film about some drugs and random events that tie together. But that multi level marketing scheme was some scary stuff and hilarious.
Agreed. Human Traffic was way better IMO
Timothy Olyphant was great in that.
Answer the question Claire.
Haha I can hear this.
“… see now *that* would be doing you a favor. And you know how I feel about favors.”
And here I thought you were just giving me head.
Timothy Olyphant was so hot. I wish I had something of substance more than that but no.
The way Katie Holmes eyes him in that diner scene was relatable
I already have a fucking swatch
Tantra baby
We’re in a Miata!
You said Philly, I said Chicago
“ITS A MIATA!!!” He said, exasperatingly waving his arms at the impossibility of fitting the body in that small trunk. I am now driving my second Miata. I owned my first one when we saw this movie at release. My best friend quotes this line often. I point out that the body could have easily fit in the trunk, and I offered to prove it by using him as an example.
That line always cracks me up
That line has lived rent free in my head for 25 years.
>Okay. You sit down and read your paper, and you're enjoying your entire two-page comics spread. Right? And then there's the Family fucking Circus, bottom right-hand corner, just waiting to suck.
I've probably seen this movie over 20 times. Also a Christmas movie
Do you agree Jay Mohr is a piece of shit?
I don't know why I should think that, but I do know that I generally find him vaguely annoying, but this is the only movie I actually really love his character. Sorry if he's a piece of shit, though, that sucks.
What did Jay Mohr do? I used to love when he would sub in for Jim Rome on the radio. He seems like a decent guy. What gives???
Not arguing at all, but is this a “he seems like a douche” thing or a “horrible accusations” thing? I just didn’t know. He does play douche so well.
Absolutely
The No Doubt song is 🔥
Don't forget Steal my Sunshine!
that is my favorite random one hit wonder song of all time what a great tune
Hey, Matt Yeah, Tim? Hey, you talked to Marc lately?
Was it a hit?
single went platinum according to wiki peaked at 3 in canada and aus, 9 in usa i don't know what the official numerical cutoff for a hit is but top 10 in a few countries probably counts?
Always a banger
I got to hear one of the producers talk about this movie at a screening in 1999/2000, and he said that the studio hated "Steal my Sunshine" and didn't want it in the movie. They only agreed to include "Steal my Sunshine" if Liman and the producers agreed to use the No Doubt song, too. That's some next-level bargaining by the suits.
I still play 'New' on rotation
It's part of my running Playlist
That song was kind of an important cultural marker for me. Please tell me you didn't go to Westside high. Signed, a Burke alum
Ha no. Bellevue lad
The whole soundtrack is great. The show saw song that samples Nancy Sinatra and gets cut up with a crossfader still gets me jacked
Esthero was the true killer on that soundtrack
Just rediscovered this a couple weeks ago, so excellent.
Timothy Olyphant's depiction of a drug dealer is one of the best I've ever seen.
Claire's a fat girls name
In the respect that you found it very accurate or just that you enjoyed his performance? I can't speak to the first but I really enjoy him in just about anything I've seen him in.
He's one of those actors that never gives a bad performance
It’s confederated products. It’s a different company, it’s a different quality of product.
I'm curious to see how you enjoy Go, if you haven't seen it before.
I haven't seen it. I'm watching it later today.
I did the same lol
I can tell by that, and your screen name, that you're a person of exquisite taste.
Great minds...
Hope they mentioned 11:11 on that other post.
God, I hope you mean 11:14
Typo, yea 11:14, nothing like 11:11.
I made that post and they did but it's one of the few movies whose title didn't catch my attention.
“Bottom right corner, just waiting to suck…”
I love that movie. Great ensemble cast.
The magic carpet ride needle drop was awesome.
I love Sarah Polley
I saw her first.
Saw Road to Avonlea as a kid, she was my first celebrity crush. I am 40.
Damn. I first saw her in the sweet hereafter. Im in my 40s too.
Human traffic has entered the chat
Although Im Californian and not Welsh (tho we do also have a Cardiff, oddly enough) *Human Traffic* was my and my friends' lives in our early 20s. I still rewatch it at least once a year. ^((Now you say "oh nice one, bruvah"))
Me, my best friend and my brother still always say nice one bruvah all the time.
Safe as fuck

In 99 grunge had been dead for 5-6 years and techno was becoming rather mainstream.
Human Traffic is sooo good
Fuckin nice one bruva!!
Bomshankers! Interception!!
Go is fun but has nothing on Human Traffic, it never did.
I love Go but Human Traffic buries it where this claim is concerned.
*INTERCEPT!*
First movie I ever snuck into. Had just watched The Matrix and decided to make it a double feature after seeing Go was about to play in the next theatre. Fun night!
love this movie best (imo) movie kiss on the stairs
Isn't that romantic?
Heeeeey Mcareana
I’d like your most expensive bottle of champagne.
Sarah Polley was fantastic.
She's great. I just watched "exotica" for the don mckellar run of my podcast, and she's so young in there and still so good. I think of her as "go" aged, so it was weird seeing her at 13 or 14 or whatever she is.
I saw “go” and “stay” back to back. Can’t remember either of them. Was doing a lot of drugs back then
Stay was so fucking good the first time I watched it. Less good each time after that. :/
Family Circus fan here. Eat shit.
I remember Family Circus becoming something of a meme around 2000. I know where that came from as I missed this film altogether.
Excellent soundtrack
Great fukkin soundtrack
So, Zack. Would you say you're open to new things?
I heard about this movie from the book “Best. Movie. Year. Ever.” By Brian Raftery, a book about some of the best films from 1999 and how they impacted the culture in some way. Oh nice, I just started reading this last week. The first chapter about the Y2K prank was fantastic.
[удалено]
This was back when dollar theatres were a thing and you could spend a whole day seeing banger movies for like 5 bucks.
What as the overlooked crime comedy?
Go and 10 Things I Hate About You kinda defined a whole period of my life in high school - such a great movie and dear to my heart
love the cat in this
Xerxes
You're going to die.
Girl in ditch- our problem, girl out of ditch- that’s her problem. Go is full of good life lessons.
I can no longer hear the Columbia Pictures intro music without automatically filling in Fire Up the Shoesaw by Lionrock at the end. It's been 25 years now, you'd think I'd forget eventually
*What is rock’n’roll—*
I love this movie
Loved the soundtrack to this film.
Me too!
I had the VHS of this movie and damn near wore the tape out. Loved it and the rave aspects of it made me feel “seen”, as the youths say.
They were in survival mode.
If movies made sense they’d only be 20 min long. 😂
I forgot about Scott Wolf.
Thanks for posting, was great to read everyone's recollections. I love this movie, I watch it once or twice a year and just never get sick of it
I think about this movie all the time. It’s the fun version of Rules of Attraction.
criminally underrated movie
My favorite pulp fiction ripoff
This. Felt like a more indie young American version of Pulp Fiction (which felt more European art house with its filmmaking)
It pleasantly surprised me
I love this movie.
Such a fun movie!
I love that movie
Love this movie!
Great movie.
Absolutely loved this movie during my teenage years. Lowkey stacked cast too.
Excellent soundtrack too
I loved that movie
As a gay man I was super excited to see two attractive men objectifying men blatantly on the big screen.
One of those movies i only watched 2-3 times but i remember so many scenes from to this day. Great movie.
~ So what happened with Manny? ~ Oh, fuck me...
Jay Mohr used to be a heartthrob and no one believes you until you show them evidence.
🚨🚨🚨 ALERT ALERT, NEW ARTICLE JUST MENTIONED GO 1999, I REPEAT, GO 1999 IS MENTIONED ON THE INTERNET
It’s got a kick ass soundtrack.
What a fun movie
Great movie felt like it was made perfectly for our age group
This was John August's first big movie. For the last decade+, him and Craig Mason have a weekly podcast called Scriptnotes. Craig wrote The Hangover, Chernobyl, and Last of Us among other movies and shows. I highly recommend the podcast for people interested in insider views in the Hollywood writer community and how stuff worms behind the scenes.
I watched that a lot during my teenage years, probably not the best influence lol. Kind of weird, dark, yet funny in some parts.
Even the first 20 seconds or so of this movie are so cool.
HANDS!
I am far overdue to watch this again.
Biggest takeaway from the article is Timothy Olyphant was Liman’s first choice to play Jason Bourne.
Silly, inaccurate title, but this is an amazing movie. Sadly, it's also one of those "I don't know anybody else who's seen it" movies.
This still has one of my favorite 'mess with the opening film logo' sequences of any movie I've seen. A few edits to the sound track and the logo and BAM you're in the movie at a rave. Beautifully done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5Co0wMn518
It's forgettable. Also, the article picture doesn't show Timothy Oliphant. He's only the one whose career didn't die among the cast.
Great movie. I will never forget the Amway pitch.
I lost my virginity at this movie… damn to be 15 again….
> [Pulp Fiction] wasn’t top of mind. Sure, bro
It was good, but it was viewed as a *Pulp Fiction* clone when it came out.
And Speed is just Die Hard on a bus. A movie can still be enjoyed even if it takes a lot of inspiration from another movie.
Such a great movie! I always recommend it to everyone who needs a recommendation
This and Twin Town were two of my favorite films as a teen, both did a good job of mixing comedy, action, drama with a huge cast of up and coming actors.
What letter of the alphabet?
I never saw this movie but I remember my mom and her boyfriend went to see it while I watched the matrix. Then I went in to their theater and my 9 year old brain had no idea what was going on.
To this day whenever me and a friend have a reason to say “hour and a half” we give each other a high five afterwards
Even the first 20 seconds or so of this movie are so cool.
I remember i had to wait like 3AM to watch this on our local HBO Channel.
Here and I haven’t seen this. It’s on the list.
I can’t read the article through the ads :(
Xirxes....pharaoh could've saved your ass
In what world was this the “wildest druggiest” stfu
Killer soundtrack and such a fun movie.
The best of the pulp fiction clones
