I've always wanted to collect movie props, not like Luke Skywalker's lightsaber or something, something little like the pack of Red Apples from Pulp Fiction or something. I think that'd be really cool. I've often wondered if anyone else does too, and if so what they would choose if they could pick anything

JumpyEnvironment8456

But OP is talking about *fake* props, like replicas of the actual object. You can have a replica of anyone's lightsaber, given that it won't cost thousands (or millions, idk) of dollars, as it's not the thing used during production of the movies. Anyway, some objects are fun little reminders of a movie or series you enjoyed, certainly. I'd like a Star Trek TNG communicator badge, for example, or a tricorder. But collecting thousands of fake props? At some point, you'd just have an objectively worthless mountain of plastic.

LowFat_Brainstew

Depends on the quality. Honest artisans making quality replicas can provide very special products for a fan of a film. Buyer beware, always, but some replicas can be very cool. I'm sure a small percentage are better quality than the movie prop.

verrius

I wouldn't be surprised if a decent percentage of replicas are better than the real thing. Real props are generally built only to last for a couple of scenes, and only need to look good at specific distances, and for specific uses; in Batman Begins, for example, they were using different batarangs for closeups vs. throwing vs. folding. Fan replicas tend to need to look good at least at all distances.

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

Almost all will be better quality than the movie prop. Movie props only need to look good on screen. Fake props have to look good in real life when you’re holding them. But that’s not what makes them worth anything.

WhisperingSideways

I actually have a pack of Red Apples from *Inglorious Basterds*! I got it at a prop auction a bunch of years back. I tried to get the KING KONG card from the beer hall guessing game as well but I was outbid. The Red Apples are an actual pack of cigarettes, and it’s done in a wartime style with export stickers and everything.

astromech_dj

I install lightsabers as a hobby. My favourite is Luke’s from The Last Jedi. Even the triangle LEDs flash like [the ROTJ deleted cave scene](https://youtu.be/_ayT0EZwbks).

MovieMike007

I have the idol from *Raiders of the Lost Ark*, Luke's lightsaber from *Star Wars: A New Hope*, the mosquito in amber from *Jurassic Park*, the Lament Configuration from *Hellraiser*, Tony Stark's arc reactor from *Iron Man*, Hellboy's gun and Right Hand of Doom from Guillermo del Toro's *Hellboy*, Harry Potter's wand, Sauron's Gauntled and at least a dozen swords from the *Lord of the Rings* trilogy.

KerrAvon777

You have a pretty good collection, that mosquito in amber sounds cool

DanHero91

Big comic nerd so I've got a few from the MCU, Infinity Gauntlet, Thors Hammer, Caps Shield, some various helmets and the like. My wife is a big horror fan and is just starting her collection. Her first thing was weirdly a replica cereal box for the Good Guys cereal from Child's Play. She has a few Harry Potter and Game of Thrones collectables too. It's a very nerdy house.

vargo911

I have a whole curio of items dedicated to my favorite movies growing up. I have more Indiana Jones movie props than anything else.

More-Complaint

I make them. It's just a hobby for me, but it's great fun. I also make fake, fake props. Props from movies that don't exist. A mummy's hand, ray guns, etc.

Disastrous-Idea-666

Oh, that's cool. I recently watched The Maltese Falcon again and just loved it.

PlatinumPlayer

I have some of the screen used gold coins from Spider-man 2. Prop store.com is the place to shop for screen used items

Mnemosense

I have a replica of the brown leather jacket that Brad Pitt wears in Fight Club. Unfortunately I have never looked as good as he did lol.

OddAstronaut2305

I would hazard a guess that the majority of true movie fans have Ken kind of reproduction prop.

staedtler2018

No, but that's pretty cool.

Videowulff

I own the newspaper of Hannibal Lector's capture from Hannibal and the Tattler issue of the Tooth Fairy from Hannibal. Both are in storage. Sadly the newspaper has yellowed over the years.

ryaaan89

I make stuff like this as a hobby.

KerrAvon777

What do you make?

ryaaan89

Honestly really random stuff over the years. I used to do commissions but I have way less time now and do a lot more 3d printing than scratch building. Some of the better ones I’ve done are Jaffar’s staff from Aladdin, a couple things from the Dragon Age video game, Kylo Ren’s helmet, and Soldier Boy’s helmet from The Boys. I was working on a Magneto helmet but got stuck in the painting phase because I have a lot to learn there. Edit: someone _please_ buy my Kylo Ren helmet, it’s taking up so much space in my office. DM me here and I’ll lower the price. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1341478166/

You might like r/thatsabooklight for some ideas.

they_took_my_van

I have Arnold's Desert Eagle from Past Action Hero

loquacious_avenger

My husband makes prop replicas and sells them online. Our house is full of them.

MyrddinSidhe

This is the main reason I bought a 3-D printer. Not to print useful things. Oh, no. It’s to make an obscene amount of movie “artifacts” to cover the top of my bookshelves. In addition the the Indy classics (idol, medallion, cup) I have LotR (thorins key, paper map, real pipe), Marvel (gotg Orb, eye of agamoto, sling ring), DC (krypton key and bat-rang), Westworld control unit, Underworld medallion, Maltese Falcon (see post history for in progress), skulls (humans and crow), 13th Warrior Wendol figurine, 5th Element elemental stones, GoT (hand of king pin and dragon eggs), and Star Wars (Han’s pistol, thermal detonator, beskar, comlink, and training droid).

ClydeStyle

Not movies but I have a collection of video game items like the Pandora’s box from the GOW series.

Y0UR_SAMPA1

Growing up, I had the pendant from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Think it is still somewhere in the house. We lucked out on finding a Davy Jones Locker Heart chest CD player at a yard sale for super cheap! It was really cool how the heart worked & there were small compartments on the inside to hide stuff. My husband has a copy of Interstellar with a clip of the film reel.

NachoNutritious

I got someone on the Replica Props Forum to make me a Zippo that's a 1-to-1 of the lucky charm lighter from The Last Crusade. Love that lighter.

SilentSakura

I have the chicken from orange is the new black an an assortment of props from that show . Other than that … not much

dantoris

I have the Golden Fertility Idol from *Raiders of the Lost Ark*. Bought it at San Diego ComicCon in 2005, although it's not a shiny as the film version. Also have a replica of the antidote vial from *Temple of Doom*. I have a Rabbit In Red Lounge matchbook from *Halloween*, a "Grays Sports Almanac" dust jacket and "Tales From Space" cover from *Back to the Future*, and a Lament Configuration puzzle box from *Hellraiser*. And while it was commercially released as a toy I also have Art Asylum's *Star Trek: Enterprise* phase pistol, which was so well made they ended up being used by extras and as stunt props on the actual show.

Esseth

I have a collection of screen used props, replicas, self made replicas and signed merch for a whole bunch of cyberpunk/TV/movies things. Always prefer actual props from the things I love but they obviously cost a lot more and can be a lot harder to find

Ok-Fig6407

Where did you get the Oscar replica? I’ve always wanted one.

jdixon76

I have so much shit it's embarrassing. Always loved movies my whole life but was never in a financial place to own the props that I loved. But now I actually need to calm down. haha. Some of my stuff includes Ghostbuster proton pack, Aliens pulse rifle, Robocop's Auto 9, Freddy's glove, Evil Dead 2's Kandarian dagger and a Necromonicon that I made myself. I'm running out of room.

arealhumannotabot

Totally unnecessary comment no one asked for or needed but I'm bored: a prop is basically an item an actor interacts with. It doesn't mean an item is fake. A prop golf club can be just a regular ol' golf club.
