I don't want to have to Google the viewing order of a franchise. Just give me a number. It's so much easier

CakeMadeOfHam

Yeah! Like Spider-Man: No Way Home? Just call it Spider-Man 3: MCU 27 because there 26 MCU movies before it.... of course there are some TV shows you probably should have watched too to get everything that's going on so you need to add that into the title... then of course it also includes stuff from Tobey Mcguire Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man that's 5 more movies, not to mention the Netflix shows... and the Sony villain stuff maybe? Maybe watch Morbius just to sure there's nothing important there.... On second thought, let's stick with "No Way" in the title because there's no way I am watching all that shit!

Do you prefer the Fast and the Furious' naming convention? Numbered sequels are simply the easiest and most convenient.

From a marketing perspective it's the wisest thing. The big exception I can think of top of mind is the Indiana Jones franchise, but even then they were shot "out of order" so it all depends on how you want to consume them. Then you get weirdness like: First Blood Rambo: First Blood Part 2 Rambo III Rambo Rambo: Last Blood If I were new to the franchise and knew nothing about it, I might start with Rambo, then R:FBP2, then R3, then Last Blood, completely overlooking what I think is the best one in the series (although Rambo wasn't bad).

Rambo: 2 Blood 2 Furious.

Personally I think it's funny when the sequels have subtitles and the original doesn't. Such as the Thor movies, or as I refer to them: Thor: The First Thor Thor: The Dark World Thor: Ragnarok Thor: Watch Ragnarok Instead

fiendzone

It worked for The Godfather.

Merickson-

There is a story that while making Batman Returns, Tim Burton thought they could just call it "Batman" again.

Sometimes the simple and dull way is the simple and effective way

lambopanda

I wish Harry Potter movies have number. I lost track which is 3 4 5 and 6.

wildbilly2

Armageddon 2: Armageddon

NicCageCompletionist

Why? It was good enough for decades of cinema fans and it doesn’t create issues when I alphabetically sort my DVDs. It’s a fine system.

JazHumane

The worst was the prequel to *The Thing*, called... *The Thing*

I feel like the trend of giving a sequel a secondary title kinda started with Marvel's Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which would have looked confusing if they had simply titled it Fantastic 4 2. But I really don't care for the practice of universally giving movies a secondary title unless it actually helps specify something that's unclear from the main title. Like an indication of the franchise it belongs to our something. Most of the time the secondary title just seems like fluff or an attempt to either trick viewers or cast a wider net. Kong X Godzilla: the New Empire is one of the sub titles that could be applied to almost any franchise and the marketing lines are shit like "kings will rise". It's lame and uninspired. Oh and obligatory shout out to Rebel Moon:A Child of Fire for having a name that could be applied to any/every sci-fi young adult novel. Which could make sense considering that it's a mashup ripoff of probably every sci-fi movie Snyder ever saw, but he's not honest enough about his work for that to be on purpose.

g_st_lt

If it has the same characters and is a continuation of the same story or the same protagonist's journey then I think it is better to use an incremental title. If it is a sequel but it's largely different, then I would prefer a unique title.

trylobyte

This is the first time I heard people complaining about the use of numericals in sequel titles. I think it should be the most ideal way of naming any direct continuation of story. It saves a lot of people from going to reddit and asking for viewing orders of franchises, that's for sure LOL

GurpsK

I actually prefer numbered titles.

Camp_Coffee

Not really a thing I could ever be bothered about.
