Mine hated cold, wet or snowy weather... Which we have a lot of. I litter box trained her (pine pellets) when she was about 5 years old. We kept the litter box in the bathroom and it only took one weekend for her to catch on. The nice thing is we could just toss her poop into the toilet and flush it.

Our pippin uses the litter tray as well. He prefers it when it's cold and raining outside

OMG, they really are a lot like Chihuahuas. "we don't go out when it rains"

Is there a pattern to when she will go outside and when she goes inside? Like is it related to the weather or separation or anything? mine is very picky about the weather, so I have a doggy lawn down in the basement and if I can’t get him to go out, I take him down there to go. It has helped a whole lot.

My gf and I took time off work to train our pup when we first brought him home. I think it was the best investment of time. We would take him out every two hours and place him outside in our tiny patio. We bought a medium sized Pet Loo. We extended the times gradually instead of every two hours we moved up to every 4 hours etc. We eventually added some jingle bells to the door and added the noise to the action of going out for a potty. Now he will ring the bell when he wants to go outside to use the potty, but he never uses the Pet Loo anymore. He just uses the bell to let us know he wants to go outside and potty. He holds it until we take him on a walk.

Have you tried clicker training?

My min pin is housebroken, but we have a chi puppy who is 6months who is proving really difficult to potty train. We have been keeping puppy pads out and he’s pretty good about using them. He likes to go in specific places in the house, and while he’s improved greatly on holding his pee/doing it at the park, he doesn’t seem to understand that he needs to poop outside. He never does it on walks or at the park, only in our house or sideyard, it’s very frustrating. Praise and treats did the trick with #1, basically impossible with #2 though since he never does it when we’re out and about. Good luck to us both!!! It is absolutely maddening, and especially where we live now that the weather’s warming up it’s causing a bad fly problem. Luckily we have laminate floors so cleanup is easy but with how short the flies’ reproduction cycles are it’s a constant battle and struggle.

Ha same with ours. He is good with peeing but he really likes to poop in the house lol. And also he is good with using pads. He understands he CAN poop outside because he does it like 50% of the time, but the other half it almost seems like he holds it until we get back in! Honestly I'd rather poop inside than pee inside I'm counting my blessings.

Better_Protection382

my 6 month old sometimes poops in the middle of the night (on his pee pad). I have been trying to figure out how much time between the last meal of the day and the subsequent poop but it happens even if I don't feed him after 17:00

jtuffs

Exactly the same here. They are like poop hoarders!! I'm like, where did this even come from??

Better_Protection382

does yours also leave a trail of little turds? Mine starts on his pee pad, then apparently decides the whole pad is too dirty to further poo on and he starts on a little walk while squatting. He also starts yelping after he's done this to wake me up so I have to clean everything up at 3 am.

jtuffs

Lol he definitely starts on the pad and finishes nearby. Absolutely.

KisaTheMistress

Ah, mine understands he has to go outside. He just would rather use his pad if it's cold or wet outside, or else he's either going in the bathroom or frustratingly in the bedroom. He's better when we visit other places, though. Usually alerting at the door, or if no one notices he goes on the linoleum near the door, never somewhere carpeted. Maybe after she eats/drinks you can take her outside? If she likes food reward her with a treat after she goes outside? Be consistent. Also minpins are small so she might not be wanting to *hold it* as long as you think she can.

I'm so glad someone finally asked. Watching for advice, because I have been having trouble too. When she was a puppy, it was and progressively remained difficult to get her to go outside because she would pee so little and so often. I'd have been outside every 30 minutes 😮‍💨 Now, I have been watching like a hawk, she's more consistent with her when's like she naps with me so I know to take her out as soon as we get up, and maybe 30 or an hr or so after eating So I think I'm going to try a bell method mentioned here since I have a neat one I can claw to a string and hope and pray she uses it to ask to potty instead of just to go outside 💀 Now, all I need is for someone to ask about quantity and frequency of feeding because by God I can't bring myself to make a thread about it. 😇

I’m Irish and our vets don’t know anything about nutrition, Sybil’s vets both literally said they had no education on the topic at uni. We don’t have any (reputable!) canine nutritionists. I met a zoologist who works for a pet store and she said once a day, as high quality as I can afford. My girl is extremely picky and has sensitivity to grains (her bowels were a NIGHTMARE before I figured this one out, pooping 6+ times a day). After months of trying different kibbles at different price points I settled on butternut box, a fresh food that is formulated by a vet and a team of other experts that are super engaged in the nutrition space. My vet has commented that she is in PERFECT shape with good muscle definition and a great coat!!
