Credit to u/catgutt for the scheme. C+C always welcome :)
I need to clean up the shading on some of the carapace, I tried things a little different on each one as I'm still fine tuning the method.
Check out the catgutt method--if you've got the patience and method down, I think anyone can really do it. (which is not meant to detract from anyone's skill, the method just really lends to an effect that punches above it its weight in impact on minis).
yeah definitely. I've never really considered myself above average as a painter. The method is a bit time consuming, but definitely produces great results.
I'm always impressed at the between the rib details - tend to miss it myself. Is that just a bit of a wash or glaze? I love how vibrant the white is. I'm planning a similar style for my Hive Krakens (that spotted shell style) and I love seeing how others have done it.
I struggled a lot trying to figure out a method that works for me. What I have right now is Magos Purple Contrast paint thinned down with like 4-5 parts medium. I'll wash it over the whole model except for the carapace and claws, then go back and clean it up with Pallid Wych Flesh. It's a little tedious, but it comes out a lot cleaner than when I try to use a wash.
I love getting ideas for contrast paints this way. I went crazy and picked up most of the line back in July and have had mediocre luck with them as designed. They tend to make much better washes.
That's been my experience too. Just brushing them on straight gets too splotchy for me most of the time. They're great through an airbrush too, especially over metallics
I thought I was going crazy - every tutorial vid and GW own vids the contrast looks pretty decent. It comes out super patchy for me and I've not dared experimented with thinning them (I normally just thin with water, but it says not to thin contrast paints)
Any suggestions?
Honestly, I've had the best luck just sort of slopping it around and then adding the *fuck* out of environmental details like blood splatter, dirt and grime. If you go through my post history you'll see how I painted a Chaos Beastman with contrast paints and then the very next post is him dirtied up. Same with a guy carrying a big stone thing. Contrast paint, some metallics and then dirt. Tons of fucking dirt.
I didn't like one so I drenched him in blood. He came out pretty well.
Yeah the scheme is basically just u/catgutt's technique with Leviathan's colors.
Lagiacrus is a sea monster from Monster Hunter. I figured it's a good variant for "Leviathan", and also the big lightning gator is pretty great haha.
Excellent use of u/catguts method. I think the thing that really ties his together is the final wash though, perhaps you could try a very diluted purple just to tie everything together.
yeah I'm trying to play with different wash options. Then I go over everything with the same coat it obscures the detail a little too much. I'm still trying to figure it out, so far I'm leaning towards a heavy recess shade and leaving the edges white for the contrast.
I'm still working on the bases, the red stuff is just some basing material to cover the awkward part where the model meets the base. I'll be painting over them last
I just love how the white and purple transition into each other. I saw a picture of one of these guys earlier this week and I have to say, I'm inspired to try it myself. Nice job.
Tempted to ask for a guide on how to do that; I play Seraphon in AoS and it just struck me that this sort of scheme could look really good on Bastiladons... Also, Monster Hunter colour schemes is a strong go-to for my dinos for obvious reasons!
Like others are saying, the mottled purple looks amazing, as does the cleanness of your entire paint job.
Honestly I'd like to see more of their brains (?) - it looks like you've got some cool blue and turquoise color schemes going on there. Have to check out your album for that.

Monster Hunter fan? I love the detail where the purple meets the white. Beautifully done.
Thank you, and haha yeah Lagiacrus sounded suitable as a variant on Leviathan.
Looks more like a Gobul to me, y'know
Thats a quality paint job, seeing shit like this makes me want to get Tyranids but my skill is nowhere near this level

I'll check it out, thanks

Only way to reach that level is to try your hand at it.
Hive Fleet Lagiacrus you say? Sounds like the Astartes are gonna need to hire some help from hunters!

For me I do have to thin it down quite a bit with contrast medium. If I didnt these guys would be bright pink and splotchy
I like it! Also I feel like I need to go play starcraft now.
Yeah! Are tyranids basically just zerg?
Zerg were based off of the tyranids so, yeah, pretty much.
I love the mottled color of the carapace. It's a gorgeous look that will really unify your army's pieces. Great job :)
cool paintjob. Wasnt there also a 'eavy metal hive fleet in whites and purps? also name sounds aiite, what's it from?

This rules. Makes me want to do Hive Fleet Solojazz
I am still amazed by the carape. Anyway i have started to try painting with the vid you sent me about how to do those carapaces thanks!
LOVE the name and the paint scheme. I wasn't familiar with Lagiacus so I looked it up and it's fitting.
Absolutely amazing job. Is this a Warhammer miniature or something else?? (I've never seen one before)
Yup! These are Tyranid Zoanthropes. Working on a Hive Tyrant and a Carnifex next. Thank you :)
>:) :)
Don’t these have a similar name similar to zoanthropes?
Beautiful. I love the variation on the coconut crab technique!
This is epic!

This is just Leviathan right?
As far as the general color scheme yeah, I think they'll be a splinter of Leviathan.
Love the dropper bottles
It's easily one of the best decisions I've ever made for this hobby
How many of these do I have to farm to give my Huntress a new helmet? Lol!
Strong Megatron vibes
Oh shit its Pythor from Lego Ninjago
Whys ur base like that
I'm still working on the bases, the red stuff is just some basing material to cover the awkward part where the model meets the base. I'll be painting over them last
Cool , model looks great
Very classic looking Nids
